Nehemías 6

1Und als Sanballat, Tobija und Geschem, der Araber, und andere von unsern Feinden erfuhren, daß ich die Mauern gebaut habe und daß keine Lücke mehr daran sei, wiewohl ich zu jener Zeit die Türflügel noch nicht in die Tore eingehängt hatte,
2sandten Sanballat und Geschem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm und laß uns in den Dörfern, in der Ebene Ono zusammenkommen! Sie gedachten aber, mir Böses zu tun.
3Da sandte ich Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich habe ein großes Werk zu verrichten, darum kann ich nicht hinabkommen. Warum sollte das Werk stillestehen, indem ich es ruhen ließe und zu euch hinabkäme?
4Sie ließen mir aber viermal das Gleiche sagen, und ich gab ihnen die gleiche Antwort.
5Da ließ mir Sanballat zum fünftenmal das Gleiche durch seinen Knappen sagen; der kam mit einem offenen Brief in der Hand, darin war geschrieben:
6Unter den Nationen verlautet und Gasmu sagt, daß du und die Juden abzufallen gedenken; darum bauest du die Mauern, und du wollest ihr König sein, so sagt man.
7Und du habest dir auch Propheten bestellt, die von dir zu Jerusalem ausrufen und sagen sollen: Er ist König von Juda! Nun wird der König solches vernehmen; darum komm, wir wollen miteinander beraten!
8Ich aber sandte zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Nichts von dem, was du sagst, ist geschehen; aus deinem eigenen Herzen hast du es erdacht!
9Denn sie alle wollten uns furchtsam machen und dachten: Ihre Hände werden schon ablassen von dem Werk, und es wird nicht vollendet werden! Nun aber stärke du meine Hände!
10Und ich kam in das Haus Semajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels. Der hatte sich eingeschlossen und sprach: Wir wollen zusammenkommen im Hause Gottes, mitten im Tempel, und die Türen des Tempels schließen; denn sie werden kommen, dich umzubringen, und zwar werden sie des Nachts kommen, um dich umzubringen!
11Ich aber sprach: Sollte ein Mann wie ich fliehen? Und sollte ein Mann wie ich in den Tempel gehen, um am Leben zu bleiben? Ich gehe nicht!
12Denn siehe, ich merkte wohl: nicht Gott hatte ihn gesandt, mir zu weissagen, sondern Tobija und Sanballat hatten ihn gedungen;
13und zwar zu dem Zweck, daß ich in Furcht geraten und also tun und mich versündigen sollte, damit sie mir einen bösen Namen machen und mich verlästern könnten.
14Gedenke, mein Gott, des Tobija und Sanballat nach diesen ihren Werken, auch der Prophetin Noadja und der andern Propheten, die mir Furcht einjagen wollten!
15Und die Mauer ward fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten Tag des Monats Elul, in zweiundfünfzig Tagen.
16Als nun alle unsre Feinde solches hörten und alle Heiden um uns her solches sahen, entfiel ihnen aller Mut; denn sie merkten, daß dieses Werk von Gott getan worden war.
17Auch ließen zu jener Zeit die Vornehmsten in Juda viele Briefe an Tobija abgehen, und auch von Tobija gelangten solche zu ihnen.
18Denn es waren viele in Juda, die mit ihm verschworen waren, weil er Sechanjas, des Sohnes Arachs, Tochtermann war und sein Sohn die Tochter Mesullams, des Sohnes Berechjas hatte.
19Sie redeten auch zu seinen Gunsten vor mir und hinterbrachten ihm meine Worte; und Tobija sandte Briefe, um mir Furcht einzujagen.

1Y FUÉ que habiendo oído Sanballat, y Tobías, y Gesem el Arabe, y los demás nuestros enemigos, que había yo edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo, (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto en las puertas las hojas,)
2Sanballat y Gesem enviaron á decirme: Ven, y compongámonos juntos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono. Mas ellos habían pensado hacerme mal.
3Y enviéles mensajeros, diciendo: Yo hago una grande obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir á vosotros.
4Y enviaron á mí con el mismo asunto por cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.
5Envió entonces Sanballat á mí su criado, á decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano,
6En la cual estaba escrito: Hase oído entre las gentes, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los Judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey;
7Y que has puesto profetas que prediquen de ti en Jerusalem, diciendo: ¡Rey en Judá! Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras: ven por tanto, y consultemos juntos.
8Entonces envié yo á decirle: No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas.
9Porque todos ellos nos ponían miedo, diciendo: Debilitaránse las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será hecha. Esfuerza pues mis manos, oh Dios.
10Vine luego en secreto á casa de Semaías hijo de Delaías, hijo de Mehetabeel, porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo: Juntémonos en la casa de Dios dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán á matarte.
11Entonces dije: ¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿y quién, que como yo fuera, entraría al templo para salvar la vida? No entraré.
12Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí, porque Tobías y Sanballat le habían alquilado por salario.
13Porque sobornado fué para hacerme temer así, y que pecase, y les sirviera de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado.
14Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanballat, conforme á estas sus obras, y también de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que hacían por ponerme miedo.
15Acabóse pues el muro el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.
16Y como lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las gentes que estaban en nuestros alrededores, y abatiéronse mucho sus ojos, y conocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.
17Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los principales de Judá á Tobías, y las de Tobías venían á ellos.
18Porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él, porque era yerno de Sechânías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado la hija de Mesullam, hijo de Berechîas.
19También contaban delante de mí sus buenas obras, y referíanle mis palabras. Y enviaba Tobías cartas para atemorizarme.

1Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
World English Bible
1Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),
2Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
3I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?”
4They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
7You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let’s take counsel together.”
8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
9For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.
10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”
11I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him, but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13He was hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear.”
15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
16When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.
