1Als nun alle Könige dies vernahmen, die diesseits des Jordans im Berglande, in der Niederung und an der ganzen Küste des großen Meeres nach dem Libanon hin wohnten, nämlich die Hethiter und die Amoriter, die Kanaanäer, Pherissiter, Hewiter und Jebusiter,
2da taten sie sich alle zusammen, um einmütig gegen Josua und die Israeliten zu kämpfen.
3Als aber die Einwohner von Gibeon vernahmen, wie Josua mit Jericho und Ai verfahren war,
4gingen sie ihrerseits mit List zu Werke: sie machten sich auf den Weg, und zwar versorgten sie sich mit Lebensmitteln, nahmen alte Säcke für ihre Esel und alte, geborstene und geflickte Weinschläuche,
5zogen alte, geflickte Schuhe und abgetragene Kleider an, und alles Brot, das sie als Mundvorrat bei sich hatten, war vertrocknet und zerbröckelt.
6Als sie so zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal gekommen waren, sagten sie zu ihm und zu den Israeliten: »Aus einem fernen Lande sind wir gekommen; so schließt denn jetzt einen Vertrag mit uns.«
7Da antworteten die Israeliten den Hewitern: »Vielleicht wohnt ihr mitten unter uns: wie könnten wir da einen Vertrag mit euch schließen?«
8Da sagten sie zu Josua: »Wir sind deine Knechte.« Als Josua sie nun fragte: »Wer seid ihr, und woher kommt ihr?«,
9antworteten sie ihm: »Aus einem ganz fernen Lande sind deine Knechte infolge des Ruhmes des HERRN, deines Gottes, gekommen; denn wir haben die Kunde von ihm vernommen, sowohl alles, was er an Ägypten getan hat,
10als auch alles, was er an den beiden Königen der Amoriter jenseits des Jordans getan hat, an Sihon, dem König von Hesbon, und an Og, dem König von Basan, der zu Astaroth wohnte.
11Da haben unsere Ältesten und alle Bewohner unsers Landes zu uns gesagt: ›Nehmt Lebensmittel mit euch auf den Weg, geht ihnen entgegen und sagt zu ihnen: ›Wir sind eure Knechte; so schließt nun einen Vertrag mit uns!‹
12Hier ist unser Brot: es war noch warm, als wir es aus unseren Häusern als Reisekost mitnahmen an dem Tage, als wir aufbrachen, um zu euch zu ziehen; nun aber seht ihr, daß es vertrocknet und zerbröckelt geworden ist.
13Und hier sind unsere Weinschläuche, die neu waren, als wir sie füllten; nun aber sind sie geborsten, wie ihr seht, und unsere Kleider und Schuhe hier sind von dem sehr weiten Wege ganz abgenutzt.«
14Da ließen sich die israelitischen Männer etwas von ihrem Mundvorrat geben, aber einen Ausspruch des HERRN holten sie nicht ein,
15sondern Josua gewährte ihnen Frieden und schloß einen Vertrag mit ihnen, daß er sie am Leben lassen wolle; und die Fürsten der Gemeinde leisteten ihnen einen Eid.
16Als aber nach Abschluß des Vertrags mit ihnen drei Tage vergangen waren, da erfuhr man, daß jene ganz aus der Nähe waren und mitten unter ihnen wohnten.
17Denn als die Israeliten weiter zogen, kamen sie am dritten Tage zu ihren Städten, nämlich zu den Ortschaften Gibeon, Kephira, Beeroth und Kirjath-Jearim.
18Die Israeliten taten ihnen aber nichts zuleide, weil die Fürsten der Gemeinde ihnen beim HERRN, dem Gott Israels, geschworen hatten. Als nun die ganze Gemeinde über die Fürsten murrte,
19sagten diese alle zu der ganzen Gemeinde: »Wir haben ihnen beim HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Eid geleistet; darum dürfen wir uns jetzt nicht an ihnen vergreifen.
20Wir wollen so mit ihnen verfahren, daß wir sie am Leben lassen, damit kein Zorngericht über uns komme wegen des Eides, den wir ihnen geschworen haben.«
21Die Fürsten gaben also (vor dem Volk) die Erklärung ab: »Sie sollen am Leben bleiben, aber Holzhauer und Wasserträger für die ganze Gemeinde werden.« (Da taten die Israeliten,) wie die Fürsten ihnen vorgeschlagen hatten.
22Hierauf ließ Josua sie rufen und sagte bei der Unterredung zu ihnen: »Warum habt ihr uns getäuscht, indem ihr vorgabt: ›Wir wohnen sehr weit von euch weg‹, während ihr doch mitten unter uns wohnt?
23Nun denn, so sollt ihr verflucht sein und in Zukunft immer Knechte, sowohl Holzhauer als Wasserträger, für das Haus meines Gottes sein!«
24Da gaben sie dem Josua zur Antwort: »Deinen Knechten wurde als gewiß mitgeteilt, daß der HERR, dein Gott, seinem Knechte Mose geboten hat, euch dies ganze Land zu geben, und ihr solltet alle Bewohner des Landes vor euch her vertilgen. Da gerieten wir vor euch in große Furcht für unser Leben und haben so gehandelt.
25Und nun – wir sind ja in deiner Gewalt: verfahre mit uns so, wie es dich gut und recht dünkt!«
26Da verfuhr er in der angegebenen Weise mit ihnen und rettete sie aus der Hand der Israeliten, so daß diese sie nicht ums Leben brachten.
27Josua machte sie also damals zu Holzhauern und Wasserträgern für die Gemeinde und für den Altar des HERRN an der Stätte, die der HERR erwählen würde; und so ist’s geblieben bis auf den heutigen Tag.

1Y ACONTECIÓ que como oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban de esta parte del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa de la gran mar delante del Líbano, los Hetheos, Amorrheos, Cananeos, Pherezeos, Heveos, y Jebuseos;
2Juntáronse á una, de un acuerdo, para pelear contra Josué é Israel.
3Mas los moradores de Gabaón, como oyeron lo que Josué había hecho á Jericó y á Hai,
4Ellos usaron también de astucia; pues fueron y fingiéronse embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y cueros viejos de vino, rotos y remendados,
5Y zapatos viejos y recosidos en sus pies, con vestidos viejos sobre sí; y todo el pan que traían para el camino, seco y mohoso.
6Así vinieron á Josué al campo en Gilgal, y dijéronle á él y á los de Israel: Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana: haced pues ahora con nosotros alianza.
7Y los de Israel respondieron á los Heveos: Quizás vosotros habitáis en medio de nosotros: ¿cómo pues podremos nosotros hacer alianza con vosotros?
8Y ellos respondieron á Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quién sois vosotros y de dónde venís?
9Y ellos respondieron: Tus siervos han venido de muy lejanas tierras, por la fama de Jehová tu Dios; porque hemos oído su fama, y todas las cosas que hizo en Egipto,
10Y todo lo que hizo á los dos reyes de los Amorrheos que estaban de la otra parte del Jordán; á Sehón rey de Hesbón, y á Og rey de Basán, que estaba en Astaroth.
11Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, é id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos, y haced ahora con nosotros alianza.
12Este nuestro pan tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir á vosotros; y helo aquí ahora que está seco y mohoso:
13Estos cueros de vino también los henchimos nuevos; helos aquí ya rotos: también estos nuestros vestidos y nuestros zapatos están ya viejos á causa de lo muy largo del camino.
14Y los hombres de Israel tomaron de su provisión del camino, y no preguntaron á la boca de Jehová.
15Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y concertó con ellos que les dejaría la vida: también los príncipes de la congregación les juraron.
16Pasados tres días después que hicieron con ellos el concierto, oyeron como eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos.
17Y partiéronse los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron á sus ciudades: y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Caphira, Beeroth, y Chiriath-jearim.
18Y no los hirieron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes.
19Mas todos los príncipes respondieron á toda la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no les podemos tocar.
20Esto haremos con ellos: les dejaremos vivir, porque no venga ira sobre nosotros á causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.
21Y los príncipes les dijeron: Vivan; mas sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación, como los príncipes les han dicho.
22Y llamándolos Josué, les habló diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo, Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros; una vez que moráis en medio de nosotros?
23Vosotros pues ahora sois malditos, y no faltará de vosotros siervo, y quien corte la leña y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.
24Y ellos respondieron á Josué, y dijeron: Como fué dado á entender á tus siervos, que Jehová tu Dios había mandado á Moisés su siervo que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir todos los moradores de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos en gran manera de vosotros por nuestras vidas, é hicimos esto.
25Ahora pues, henos aquí en tu mano: lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.
26Y él lo hizo así; que los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, para que no los matasen.
27Y constituyólos Josué aquel día por leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar de Jehová, en el lugar que él escogiese: lo que son hasta hoy.

1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
15And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
16And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
17And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
18And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
19But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
20This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.
21And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
22And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
23Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
24And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.
26And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
27And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
World English Bible
1When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it
2they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
3But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
4they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,
5and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.
6They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”
7The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”
8They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”
9They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,
10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
11Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’
12This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.
13These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”
14The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from the LORD’s mouth.
15Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.
16At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.
17The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.
18The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.
19But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.
20We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”
21The princes said to them, “Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.
22Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?
23Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
24They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how the LORD your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”
26He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.
27That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the LORD’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.
