1Die Israeliten hatten sich aber eine Veruntreuung an dem gebannten Gut zuschulden kommen lassen; denn Achan, der Sohn Karmis, des Sohnes Sabdis, des Sohnes Serahs, vom Stamme Juda, hatte sich etwas von dem gebannten Gut angeeignet. Darob entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN gegen die Israeliten. –
2Nun sandte Josua einige Männer von Jericho aus nach Ai, das bei Beth-Awen östlich von Bethel liegt, mit der Weisung: »Geht hinauf und kundschaftet die Gegend aus!« Als nun die Männer hinaufgegangen waren und Ai ausgekundschaftet hatten,
3berichteten sie dem Josua nach ihrer Rückkehr: »Nicht das gesamte Volk braucht hinaufzuziehen; zwei- bis dreitausend Mann genügen, um Ai zu erobern. Bemühe nicht das ganze Volk dorthin; denn die Zahl ihrer Leute ist gering.«
4So zogen denn von dem Volk etwa dreitausend Mann dorthin, wurden aber von den Aiten in die Flucht geschlagen,
5und die Aiten erschlugen etwa sechsunddreißig Mann von ihnen, verfolgten sie dann von dem Stadttor bis an die Steinbrüche und schlugen sie am Bergabhang. Da schwand dem Volk aller Mut und schlug in Verzagtheit um;
6Josua aber zerriß seine Kleider, warf sich vor der Lade des HERRN auf sein Angesicht zur Erde nieder bis zum Abend, er samt den Ältesten der Israeliten, und sie streuten sich Staub aufs Haupt.
7Darauf betete Josua: »Ach, HERR, mein Gott! Warum hast du dieses Volk über den Jordan geführt? Um uns in die Hand der Amoriter fallen zu lassen, damit sie uns vernichten? O hätten wir uns doch daran genügen lassen, jenseits des Jordans wohnen zu bleiben!
8Verzeihe, HERR! Was soll ich sagen, nachdem Israel sich vor seinen Feinden zur Flucht gewandt hat?
9Wenn das die Kanaanäer und alle übrigen Bewohner des Landes erfahren, so werden sie von allen Seiten über uns herfallen und unsern Namen von der Erde vertilgen! Was willst du nun für deinen großen Namen tun?«
10Da antwortete der HERR dem Josua: »Stehe auf! Wozu liegst du da auf deinem Angesicht?
11Israel hat sich versündigt! Denn sie haben sowohl mein Bundesgebot übertreten, das ich ihnen zur Pflicht gemacht habe, als auch sich etwas von dem gebannten Gut angeeignet; so haben sie sowohl einen Diebstahl begangen als auch das Gestohlene versteckt und unter ihre eigenen Geräte getan.
12Daher vermögen die Israeliten jetzt vor ihren Feinden nicht mehr standzuhalten, sondern müssen vor ihren Feinden die Flucht ergreifen; denn sie sind selbst dem Bann verfallen. Ich werde hinfort nicht mehr mit euch sein, wenn ihr das gebannte Gut nicht aus eurer Mitte wegschafft.
13Stehe auf, laß das Volk sich heiligen und mache bekannt: ›Heiligt euch auf morgen!‹ Denn so hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: ›Gebanntes Gut befindet sich in deiner Mitte, Israel; du wirst deinen Feinden nicht eher zu widerstehen vermögen, als bis ihr das gebannte Gut aus eurer Mitte weggeschafft habt.‹
14Darum sollt ihr morgen früh antreten, Stamm für Stamm; und der Stamm, den der HERR durch das Los bezeichnet, soll herantreten, ein Geschlecht nach dem andern; und das Geschlecht, das der HERR durch das Los bezeichnet, soll herantreten, eine Familie nach der andern; und die Familie, die der HERR durch das Los bezeichnet, soll Mann für Mann herantreten.
15Wer dann als dem Bann verfallen durch das Los bezeichnet wird, soll mit allem, was er besitzt, im Feuer verbrannt werden, weil er das Bundesgebot des HERRN übertreten und eine Schandtat in Israel begangen hat!«
16Da ließ Josua am andern Morgen in der Frühe die Israeliten antreten, Stamm für Stamm; da wurde der Stamm Juda durch das Los getroffen.
17Als er dann die Geschlechter von Juda herantreten ließ, wurde das Geschlecht der Sarchiten getroffen. Als er dann das Geschlecht der Sarchiten herantreten ließ, eine Familie nach der andern, wurde die Familie Sabdis getroffen;
18und als er dessen Familie Mann für Mann herantreten ließ, wurde Achan getroffen, der Sohn Karmis, des Sohnes Sabdis, des Sohnes Serahs, vom Stamme Juda.
19Da sagte Josua zu Achan: »Mein Sohn, gib doch dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, die Ehre und lege ein offenes Bekenntnis vor ihm ab: gestehe mir, was du getan hast: verhehle mir nichts!«
20Da antwortete Achan dem Josua: »Fürwahr, ich habe mich am HERRN, dem Gott Israels, versündigt! So und so habe ich getan:
21ich sah unter den Beutestücken einen schönen babylonischen Mantel, dazu zweihundert Schekel Silber und eine Goldstange, fünfzig Schekel an Gewicht; da gelüstete mich nach diesen Sachen, und ich eignete sie mir an; sie sind jetzt mitten in meinem Zelt im Boden vergraben, und das Silber liegt zuunterst.«
22Da sandte Josua Boten hin, die liefen zum Zelt, und man fand die Sachen wirklich in seinem Zelt vergraben, und das Silber lag zuunterst.
23Da nahmen sie die Sachen aus dem Zelte mit, brachten sie zu Josua und zu allen Israeliten und legten sie vor den HERRN hin.
24Nun nahm Josua, und ganz Israel mit ihm, Achan, den Sohn Serahs, und das Silber, den Mantel und die Goldstange, dazu seine Söhne und Töchter, auch seine Rinder, seine Esel und sein Kleinvieh, ferner sein Zelt und alles, was er sonst noch besaß, und brachten das alles in das Tal Achor hinauf.
25Dort sagte Josua zu Achan: »Wie hast du uns ins Unglück gestürzt! Dafür möge der HERR auch dich heute ins Unglück stürzen!« Hierauf steinigten ihn alle Israeliten und man verbrannte sie im Feuer und vollzog die Steinigung an ihnen;
26dann errichteten sie über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen, der noch heutigentags dort liegt. Da ließ der HERR von seiner Zornesglut ab. Daher heißt jener Ort bis auf den heutigen Tag das Tal Achor.

1EMPERO los hijos de Israel cometieron prevaricación en el anatema: porque Achân, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá, tomó del anatema; y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra los hijos de Israel.
2Y Josué envió hombres desde Jericó á Hai, que estaba junto á Beth-aven hacia el oriente de Beth-el; y hablóles diciendo: Subid, y reconoced la tierra. Y ellos subieron, y reconocieron á Hai.
3Y volviendo á Josué, dijéronle: No suba todo el pueblo, mas suban como dos mil ó como tres mil hombres, y tomarán á Hai: no fatigues á todo el pueblo allí, porque son pocos.
4Y subieron allá del pueblo como tres mil hombres, los cuales huyeron delante de los de Hai.
5Y los de Hai hirieron de ellos como treinta y seis hombres, y siguiéronlos desde la puerta hasta Sebarim, y los rompieron en la bajada: por lo que se disolvió el corazón del pueblo, y vino á ser como agua.
6Entonces Josué rompió sus vestidos, y postróse en tierra sobre su rostro delante del arca de Jehová hasta la tarde, él y los ancianos de Israel; y echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas.
7Y Josué dijo: ¡Ah, Señor Jehová! ¿Por qué hiciste pasar á este pueblo el Jordán, para entregarnos en las manos de los Amorrheos, que nos destruyan? ¡Ojalá nos hubiéramos quedado de la otra parte del Jordán!
8¡Ay Señor! ¿qué diré, ya que Israel ha vuelto las espaldas delante de sus enemigos?
9Porque los Cananeos y todos los moradores de la tierra oirán, y nos cercarán, y raerán nuestro nombre de sobre la tierra: entonces ¿qué harás tú á tu grande nombre?
10Y Jehová dijo á Josué: Levántate; ¿por qué te postras así sobre tu rostro?
11Israel ha pecado, y aun han quebrantado mi pacto que yo les había mandado; pues aun han tomado del anatema, y hasta han hurtado, y también han mentido, y aun lo han guardado entre sus enseres.
12Por esto los hijos de Israel no podrán estar delante de sus enemigos, sino que delante de sus enemigos volverán las espaldas; por cuanto han venido á ser anatema: ni seré más con vosotros, si no destruyereis el anatema de en medio de vosotros.
13Levántate, santifica al pueblo, y di: Santificaos para mañana; porque Jehová el Dios de Israel dice así: Anatema hay en medio de ti, Israel; no podrás estar delante de tus enemigos, hasta tanto que hayáis quitado el anatema de en medio de vosotros.
14Os allegaréis, pues, mañana por vuestras tribus; y la tribu que Jehová tomare, se allegará por sus familias; y la familia que Jehová tomare, se allegará por sus casas; y la casa que Jehová tomare, allegaráse por los varones;
15Y el que fuere cogido en el anatema, será quemado á fuego, él y todo lo que tiene, por cuanto ha quebrantado el pacto de Jehová, y ha cometido maldad en Israel.
16Josué, pues, levantándose de mañana, hizo allegar á Israel por sus tribus; y fué tomada la tribu de Judá;
17Y haciendo allegar la tribu de Judá, fué tomada la familia de los de Zera; haciendo luego allegar la familia de los de Zera por los varones, fué tomado Zabdi;
18E hizo allegar su casa por los varones, y fué tomado Achân, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá.
19Entonces Josué dijo á Achân: Hijo mío, da gloria ahora á Jehová el Dios de Israel, y dale alabanza, y declárame ahora lo que has hecho; no me lo encubras.
20Y Achân respondió á Josué, diciendo: Verdaderamente yo he pecado contra Jehová el Dios de Israel, y he hecho así y así:
21Que vi entre los despojos un manto babilónico muy bueno, y doscientos siclos de plata, y un changote de oro de peso de cincuenta siclos; lo cual codicié, y tomé: y he aquí que está escondido debajo de tierra en el medio de mi tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello.
22Josué entonces envió mensajeros, los cuales fueron corriendo á la tienda; y he aquí estaba escondido en su tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello:
23Y tomándolo de en medio de la tienda, trajéronlo á Josué y á todos los hijos de Israel, y pusiéronlo delante de Jehová.
24Entonces Josué, y todo Israel con él, tomó á Achân hijo de Zera, y el dinero, y el manto, y el changote de oro, y sus hijos, y sus hijas, y sus bueyes, y sus asnos, y sus ovejas, y su tienda, y todo cuanto tenía, y lleváronlo todo al valle de Achôr;
25Y dijo Josué: ¿Por qué nos has turbado? Túrbete Jehová en este día. Y todos los Israelitas los apedrearon, y los quemaron á fuego, después de apedrearlos con piedras;
26Y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, hasta hoy. Y Jehová se tornó de la ira de su furor. Y por esto fué llamado aquel lugar el Valle de Achôr, hasta hoy.

1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
2And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
3And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
4So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
5And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
8O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
10And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
14In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
15And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
16So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
17And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
18And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
24And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
World English Bible
1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore the LORD’s anger burned against the children of Israel.
2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.
3They returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Don’t let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them.”
4So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai.
5The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them. They chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.
6Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the LORD’s ark until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
7Joshua said, “Alas, Lord GOD, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan!
8Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies?
9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?”
10The LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face like that?
11Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken some of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff.
12Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
13Get up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says, “There is a devoted thing among you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you.”
14In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which the LORD selects shall come near by families. The family which the LORD selects shall come near by households. The household which the LORD selects shall come near man by man.
15It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the LORD’s covenant, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
16So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected.
17He brought near the family of Judah, and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected.
18He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
19Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done! Don’t hide it from me!”
20Achan answered Joshua, and said, “I have truly sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done.
21When I saw among the plunder a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it.”
22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
23They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before the LORD.
24Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
25Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you today.” All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
26They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. The LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called “The valley of Achor” to this day.
