1O Senhor enviou esta mensagem a Jonas, filho de um homem chamado Amitai:
2“Apronte-se e vá à grande cidade de Nínive e anuncie a seus habitantes esta mensagem do Senhor: ‘Vou destruir esta cidade por causa de sua grande maldade: seus pecados são tão horríveis que chegaram até a minha presença!’ ”
3Jonas, porém, preferiu fugir da presença do Senhor. Foi até o mar, ao porto de Jope, onde encontrou um navio que ia para Társis. Comprou sua passagem e embarcou para se esconder do Senhor.
4Mas, durante a viagem, de repente, o Senhor fez soprar um forte vento que agitou o mar e formou uma grande tempestade, tão violenta que o navio estava quase se partindo ao meio.
5Com muito medo, os marinheiros, desesperados, gritavam pedindo ajuda aos próprios deuses. Para o navio ficar mais leve, começaram a jogar a carga ao mar. Enquanto tudo isso acontecia, Jonas, que havia descido ao porão, dormia tranquilamente.
6O capitão do navio desceu para falar com ele. “O que há com você?”, gritou. “Como é que você fica dormindo numa hora dessas? Levante-se e fale com o seu Deus, para ver se ele tem piedade de nós e não nos deixa morrer!”
7Enquanto isso, os marinheiros decidiram tirar a sorte para ver quem havia ofendido os deuses e provocado aquela tremenda tempestade. Lançaram a sorte, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas!
8“O que foi que você fez”, perguntaram, “para provocar essa tempestade que está quase nos destruindo? Quem é você? Qual é a sua profissão? De onde você vem? Qual é sua terra e a que povo você pertence?”
9Jonas respondeu: “Eu sou hebreu; adoro ao Senhor, o Deus dos céus, que fez a terra e o mar”.
10Então Jonas contou aos marinheiros que estava fugindo do Senhor. Quando os marinheiros ouviram isso, ficaram apavorados e gritaram: “Mas por que você fez uma coisa dessas?”
11“O que vamos fazer com você para a tempestade parar?”, pois o mar estava ficando cada vez mais agitado.
12“Joguem-me ao mar”, disse Jonas, “e ele ficará calmo de novo. Eu sei que sou o culpado dessa horrível tempestade”.
13Enquanto isso, os marinheiros remavam com todas as suas forças, tentando alcançar a terra, mas não conseguiam. Era impossível lutar contra a tempestade, porque o mar tinha ficado ainda mais violento!
14Então fizeram uma oração ao Senhor, o Deus de Jonas. “Ó Senhor”, pediram, “não nos mate por causa do pecado deste homem; não nos condene pela morte de um inocente, porque essa tempestade caiu sobre ele por razões que o Senhor mesmo sabe”.
15Depois disso, agarraram Jonas e o lançaram ao mar enfurecido, e a tempestade se aquietou!
16Os marinheiros ficaram espantados, sentindo ao mesmo tempo respeito pelo Senhor. Eles ofereceram sacrifícios a ele e lhe fizeram promessas.
17Mas o Senhor tinha levado até aquele lugar um grande peixe para engolir Jonas. E durante três dias e três noites, Jonas ficou dentro do peixe.

1Y FUÉ palabra de Jehová á Jonás, hijo de Amittai, diciendo:
2Levántate, y ve á Nínive, ciudad grande, y pregona contra ella; porque su maldad ha subido delante de mí.
3Y Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia de Jehová á Tarsis, y descendió á Joppe; y halló un navío que partía para Tarsis; y pagando su pasaje entró en él, para irse con ellos á Tarsis de delante de Jehová.
4Mas Jehová hizo levantar un gran viento en la mar, é hízose una tan gran tempestad en la mar, que pensóse se rompería la nave.
5Y los marineros tuvieron miedo, y cada uno llamaba á su dios: y echaron á la mar los enseres que había en la nave, para descargarla de ellos. Jonás empero se había bajado á los lados del buque, y se había echado á dormir.
6Y el maestre de la nave se llegó á él, y le dijo: ¿Qué tienes, dormilón? Levántate, y clama á tu Dios; quizá él tendrá compasión de nosotros, y no pereceremos.
7Y dijeron cada uno á su compañero: Venid, y echemos suertes, para saber por quién nos ha venido este mal. Y echaron suertes, y la suerte cayó sobre Jonás.
8Entonces le dijeron ellos: Decláranos ahora por qué nos ha venido este mal. ¿Qué oficio tienes, y de dónde vienes? ¿cuál es tu tierra, y de qué pueblo eres?
9Y él les respondió: Hebreo soy, y temo á Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que hizo la mar y la tierra.
10Y aquellos hombres temieron sobremanera, y dijéronle: ¿Por qué has hecho esto? Porque ellos entendieron que huía de delante de Jehová, porque se lo había declarado.
11Y dijéronle: ¿Qué te haremos, para que la mar se nos quiete? porque la mar iba á más, y se embravecía.
12El les respondió: Tomadme, y echadme á la mar, y la mar se os quietará: porque yo sé que por mí ha venido esta grande tempestad sobre vosotros.
13Y aquellos hombres trabajaron por tornar la nave á tierra; mas no pudieron, porque la mar iba á más, y se embravecía sobre ellos.
14Entonces clamaron á Jehová, y dijeron: Rogámoste ahora, Jehová, que no perezcamos nosotros por la vida de aqueste hombre, ni pongas sobre nosotros la sangre inocente: porque tú, Jehová, has hecho como has querido.
15Y tomaron á Jonás, y echáronlo á la mar; y la mar se quietó de su furia.
16Y temieron aquellos hombres á Jehová con gran temor; y ofrecieron sacrificio á Jehová, y prometieron votos.

1Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
3But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
4But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
7And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
8Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
9And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
14Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

1Now the LORD’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
4But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
5Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
6So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
7They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
8Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
9He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”
10Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
11Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
12He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
14Therefore they cried to the LORD, and said, “We beg you, LORD, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, LORD, have done as it pleased you.”
15So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.
17The LORD prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
