1"Ach, fordere immer vor Gericht! Wer leistet deiner Ladung Folge? Mit Heiligen entzweit, an wen willst du dich wenden?
2Den Toren wird der Ärger töten, den Dummen wird der Zorn das Leben kosten.
3Ich selbst sah einen Toren festgewurzelt stehen; da schaut ich seines Hauses raschen Untergang,
4und seine Kinder standen hilflos da. Sie mußten, ohne Anwalt, im Gerichtstor sich zertreten lassen.
5Was er geerntet, ißt ein Hungriger, und dieser bringt davon dem Darbenden. Nach ihren Krügen lechzen Durstige.
6Denn Unheil wächst nicht aus dem Staube; nicht sprießt das Unglück aus dem Boden.
7Dem Unglück wächst ein Mensch entgegen, so wie empor der Flamme Funken fliegen.
8An deiner Stelle kehrte ich mich doch zu Gott; ich stellte meine Sache Gott anheim,
9ihm, der so herrlich, unerforschlich waltet und Wunder wirket ohne Zahl,
10der selbst der Erde Regen spendet und Wasser auf die Fluren schickt,
11der Niedrige erhöht, Gebeugte führt zum Heil,
12der hintertreibt den Plan der Listigen, daß ihre Hände immer Förderliches schaffen,
13der Kluge übertrifft an List, so daß der Schlauen Plan sich überstürzt,
14daß sie bei Tag auf Dunkel stoßen, am Mittag tappen wie bei Nacht,
15der rettet den Verlassenen vor ihrem Rachen, den Armen vor der starken Faust.
16Drum geht dem Schwachen Hoffnung auf; die Bosheit muß ihr Maul verschließen.
17Wohl dem, der Gottes Zucht erfährt! Verschmäh daher des Höchsten Mahnung nicht!
18Denn er verwundet und verbindet; von seiner Hand kommt Schlag und Heil.
19In sechs der Nöte schont er deiner; in sieben dich kein Unheil trifft.
20Er rettet dich vom Tod in Hungersnot, im Krieg vor der Gefahr des Schwertes.
21Und greifen Feuerzungen um sich, so bist du wohl geborgen, hast nichts zu fürchten, wenngleich Verheerung kommt.
22Des Dämons und der Seuche kannst du lachen; die wilden Tiere brauchst du nicht zu fürchten.
23Denn mit des Landes Schrecknissen stehst du im Bunde; die wilden Tiere sind dir zugetan.
24Und du erfährst, daß wohlbehalten bleibt dein Zelt, und musterst du dein Haus, vermißt du nichts.
25Die Zahl der Kinder siehst du wachsen; wie Gras im Feld ist dein Gesproß.
26Du gehst zum Grab im hohen Alter ein, wie Garben, eingeführt zur rechten Zeit.
27So ist's. So haben wir's ergründet. So haben wir's gehört. Zu Herzen nimm es dir!"

1AHORA pues da voces, si habrá quien te responda; ¿y á cuál de los santos te volverás?
2Es cierto que al necio la ira lo mata, y al codicioso consume la envidia.
3Yo he visto al necio que echaba raíces, y en la misma hora maldije su habitación.
4Sus hijos estarán lejos de la salud, y en la puerta serán quebrantados, y no habrá quien los libre.
5Su mies comerán los hambrientos, y sacaránla de entre las espinas, y los sedientos beberán su hacienda.
6Porque la iniquidad no sale del polvo, ni la molestia brota de la tierra.
7Empero como las centellas se levantan para volar por el aire, así el hombre nace para la aflicción.
8Ciertamente yo buscaría á Dios, y depositaría en él mis negocios:
9El cual hace cosas grandes é inescrutables, y maravillas que no tienen cuento:
10Que da la lluvia sobre la haz de la tierra, y envía las aguas por los campos:
11Que pone los humildes en altura, y los enlutados son levantados á salud:
12Que frustra los pensamientos de los astutos, para que sus manos no hagan nada:
13Que prende á los sabios en la astucia de ellos, y el consejo de los perversos es entontecido;
14De día se topan con tinieblas, y en mitad del día andan á tientas como de noche:
15Y libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos, y de la mano violenta;
16Pues es esperanza al menesteroso, y la iniquidad cerrará su boca.
17He aquí, bienaventurado es el hombre á quien Dios castiga: por tanto no menosprecies la corrección del Todopoderoso.
18Porque él es el que hace la llaga, y él la vendará: él hiere, y sus manos curan.
19En seis tribulaciones te librará, y en la séptima no te tocará el mal.
20En el hambre te redimirá de la muerte, y en la guerra de las manos de la espada.
21Del azote de la lengua serás encubierto; ni temerás de la destrucción cuando viniere.
22De la destrucción y del hambre te reirás, y no temerás de las bestias del campo:
23Pues aun con las piedras del campo tendrás tu concierto, y las bestias del campo te serán pacíficas.
24Y sabrás que hay paz en tu tienda; y visitarás tu morada, y no pecarás.
25Asimismo echarás de ver que tu simiente es mucha, y tu prole como la hierba de la tierra.
26Y vendrás en la vejez á la sepultura, como el montón de trigo que se coge á su tiempo.
27He aquí lo que hemos inquirido, lo cual es así: óyelo, y juzga tú para contigo.

1Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?
2For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.
3I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
5Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
6Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
8I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
9Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
10Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
11To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
12He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
13He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
14They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.
15But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
17Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
18For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
21Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
23For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.
25Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
26Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.
27Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

1“Call now; is there any who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
2For resentment kills the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple.
3I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,
5whose harvest the hungry eat up, and take it even out of the thorns. The snare gapes for their substance.
6For affliction doesn’t come out of the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground;
7but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
8“But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,
9who does great things that can’t be fathomed, marvelous things without number;
10who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields;
11so that he sets up on high those who are low, those who mourn are exalted to safety.
12He frustrates the plans of the crafty, so that their hands can’t perform their enterprise.
13He takes the wise in their own craftiness; the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.
14They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night.
15But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty.
16So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.
17“Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
18For he wounds and binds up. He injures and his hands make whole.
19He will deliver you in six troubles; yes, in seven no evil will touch you.
20In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword.
21You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, neither will you be afraid of destruction when it comes.
22You will laugh at destruction and famine, neither will you be afraid of the animals of the earth.
23For you will be allied with the stones of the field. The animals of the field will be at peace with you.
24You will know that your tent is in peace. You will visit your fold, and will miss nothing.
25You will know also that your offspring will be great, your offspring as the grass of the earth.
26You will come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.
27Behold, we have researched it. It is so. Hear it, and know it for your good.”
