"Ich schloß mit meinen Augen einen Bund. Wie sollte ich auf Jungfraun achten?

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Was ist mein Teil von Gott da droben, mein Lohn von dem Allmächtigen im Himmel?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Wahrhaftig, Unheil, wie's dem Bösewicht gebührt, und Ungemach, das nur für Übeltäter paßt.

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Besieht er denn nicht meine Wege, da er doch alle meine Schritte zählt?"

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

"Wenn ich der Falschheit nachgegangen wäre, verweilte auf dem Weg des Truges gern mein Fuß!

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Mit rechter Waage möge Gott mich wägen, und ohne Schuld wird er mich finden!

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Wenn meine Schritte je vom rechten Wege bogen, und wenn mein Herz den Augen folgte, und klebte je ein Makel meinen Händen an,

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fué tras mis ojos, y si algo se apegó á mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

dann zehre nur ein anderer von meiner Saat; entwurzelt werde meine Pflanzung!

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

Wenn's mich zum fremden Weibe zog, und stellte ich dem Eheweib des Freundes nach,

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

dann mahle auch mein Weib für andere, und andere mögen über sie sich beugen!

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Denn dieses wäre eine Schandtat, ein Verbrechen, vom Richter zu bestrafen,

Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.

ein Feuer, das bis zu dem Abgrund fräße und meine Habe all entwurzeln müßte.

Mißachtete ich meines Sklaven Recht und meiner Magd, wenn sie mit mir im Streite waren,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

was wollte ich da machen, wenn Gott jetzt Rache nähme, und untersuchte er, was ihm erwidern?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Hat er ihn nicht geformt, im gleichen Schoß wie mich und sie geschaffen in dem gleichen Mutterleibe?

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Versagte ich den Schwachen einen Wunsch und ließ der Witwe Augen schmachten,

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

verzehrt' für mich allein ich meinen Bissen, und durfte nicht die Waise mitessen; -

seit meiner Jugend blickte sie zu mir gleich einem Vater auf, vom Mutterschoß an leitete ich sie, -

(Porque desde mi mocedad creció conmigo como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fuí guía de la viuda;)

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

und sah ich einen nackten Bettler und einen Armen hüllenlos,

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

wenn seine Hüften keinen Dank mir wußten und er sich nicht von meiner Lämmer Schur erwärmte,

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

und schwang ich gegen eine Waise meine Faust, weil ich in dem Gerichtstor Beistand für mich sah,

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

dann falle mir die Achsel aus der Schulter, und aus dem Rohr werd' mir der Arm gerissen! -

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Denn fürchterliches Unheil ist meines Gottes Schrecken; vor seiner Hoheit kann ich nicht bestehen.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

Und machte ich zu meinem Götzen Gold und hieß ich Mammon meinen Helfer

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

und sonnte mich an meinen Schätzen, daß ich's so weit gebracht,

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

und wenn ich das Gestirn erblickte, wann's sichtbar ward, den lieben Mond, wie er des Weges zog,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

und ließ' mein Herz sich insgeheim betören und legte meine Hand zum Kusse sich an meinen Mund:

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

auch das wär' ein Vergehn, vom Richter zu bestrafen, weil ich Gott in der Höh' verleugnet hätte.

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Nie freute mich des Feindes Not, und nie frohlockt' ich, wenn ihn Unheil traf.

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

Nie gab ich meinen Mund der Sünde hin, um seine Seele zum Verfluchen mir zu fordern.

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

In meinem Zelte sagten die Geringsten: 'Ach, möchte er mit seiner Rache unersättlich sein!'

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

Kein Fremdling durfte je im Freien nächtigen, und jedem Wandersmann stand meine Türe offen.

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

Nie habe ich, wie Adam, meine Missetat verheimlicht, im Busen meine Schuld geborgen,

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

weil es mir vor dem Auflauf graute und mich der Sippe Schimpf erschreckte, so daß ich stille mich verhalten und nicht aus meiner Tür gegangen wäre!

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

Wer aber hört mich an? Hier meine Unterschrift! Drauf soll mir der Allmächtige erwidern, aufs Schreiben, das als Kläger ich verfaßt!

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Ich trüge einen solchen auf der Schulter und wollt' ihn mir als Diadem aufsetzen.

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Bei jedem meiner Schritte huldigte ich ihm wie einem Fürsten: gleich einem Fürsten träte ich ihm da entgegen.

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Wenn über mich mein Acker schrie und alle seine Furchen weinten

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

und ich verzehrte seine Ernte, ohne zu bezahlen, und ließe die, die ihn bebauten, stöhnen,

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

dann sollen Disteln statt des Weizens und statt der Gerste Unkraut sprossen!" - Hier enden Jobs Reden.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
