1Then Sophar the Minaean answered and said,
2I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus: neither do ye understand more than I.
3I will hear my shameful reproach; and the spirit of my understanding answers me.
4Hast thou not known these things of old, from the time that man was set upon the earth?
5But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, and the joy of transgressors is destruction:
6although his gifts should go up to heaven, and his Or, meat-offering sacrifice reach the clouds.
7For when he shall seem to be now established, then he shall utterly perish: and they that knew him shall say, Where is he?
8Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night.
9The eye has looked upon him, but shall not see him again; and his place shall no longer perceive him.
10Let his inferiors destroy his children, and let his hands Alex. qhlafhsousin, «feel after’ kindle the fire of sorrow.
11His bones have been filled with vigour of his youth, and it shall lie down with him in the dust.
12Though evil be sweet in his mouth, though he will hide it under his tongue;
13though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, but will keep it in the midst of his throat:
14yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; the gall of an asp is in his belly.
15His wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; a messenger of Alex. death wrath shall drag him out of his house.
16And let him suck the Gr. rage, or, mind poison of serpents, and let the serpent’s tongue slay him.
17Let him not see the Gr. milking milk of the pastures, nor the supplies of Gr. pastures honey and butter.
18He has laboured unprofitably and in vain, for wealth of which he shall not taste: it is as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow.
19For he has broken down the houses of many Alex. powerless mighty men: and he has plundered an habitation, though he built it not.
20There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire.
21There is nothing remaining of his provisions; therefore his goods shall not flourish.
22But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be Or, bruised, or, wounded straitened; and all distress shall come upon him.
23If by any means he would fill his belly, let God send upon him the fury of wrath; let him bring a torrent of pains upon him.
24And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the brazen bow wound him.
25And let the arrow pierce through his body; and Alex. suffer not a man to walk in his habitations let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him.
26And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house.
27And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him.
28Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him.
29This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of his goods appointed him by the Gr. the overseer all-seeing God.

1Y RESPONDIÓ Sophar Naamathita, y dijo:
2Por cierto mis pensamientos me hacen responder, y por tanto me apresuro.
3La reprensión de mi censura he oído, y háceme responder el espíritu de mi inteligencia.
4¿No sabes esto que fué siempre, desde el tiempo que fué puesto el hombre sobre la tierra,
5Que la alegría de los impíos es breve, y el gozo del hipócrita por un momento?
6Si subiere su altivez hasta el cielo, y su cabeza tocare en las nubes,
7Con su estiércol perecerá para siempre: los que le hubieren visto, dirán: ¿Qué es de él?
8Como sueño volará, y no será hallado: y disiparáse como visión nocturna.
9El ojo que le habrá visto, nunca más le verá; ni su lugar le echará más de ver.
10Sus hijos pobres andarán rogando; y sus manos tornarán lo que él robó.
11Sus huesos están llenos de sus mocedades, y con él serán sepultados en el polvo.
12Si el mal se endulzó en su boca, si lo ocultaba debajo de su lengua;
13Si le parecía bien, y no lo dejaba, mas antes lo detenía entre su paladar;
14Su comida se mudará en sus entrañas, hiel de áspides será dentro de él.
15Devoró riquezas, mas vomitarálas; de su vientre las sacará Dios.
16Veneno de áspides chupará; matarálo lengua de víbora.
17No verá los arroyos, los ríos, los torrentes de miel y de manteca.
18Restituirá el trabajo conforme á la hacienda que tomó; y no tragará, ni gozará.
19Por cuanto quebrantó y desamparó á los pobres, robó casas, y no las edificó;
20Por tanto, no sentirá él sosiego en su vientre, ni salvará nada de lo que codiciaba.
21No quedó nada que no comiese: por tanto su bien no será durable.
22Cuando fuere lleno su bastimento, tendrá angustia: las manos todas de los malvados vendrán sobre él.
23Cuando se pusiere á henchir su vientre, Dios enviará sobre él el furor de su ira, y harála llover sobre él y sobre su comida.
24Huirá de las armas de hierro, y el arco de acero le atravesará.
25Desenvainará y sacará saeta de su aljaba, y relumbrante pasará por su hiel: sobre él vendrán terrores.
26Todas tinieblas están guardadas para sus secretos: fuego no soplado lo devorará; su sucesor será quebrantado en su tienda.
27Los cielos descubrirán su iniquidad, y la tierra se levantará contra él.
28Los renuevos de su casa serán trasportados; serán derramados en el día de su furor.
29Esta es la parte que Dios apareja al hombre impío, y la heredad que Dios le señala por su palabra.

1Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.
3I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.
4Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,
5That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?
6Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;
7Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
8He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.
9The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.
10His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods.
11His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.
12Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;
13Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:
14Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.
15He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.
16He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper’s tongue shall slay him.
17He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.
18That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein.
19Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not;
20Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.
21There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.
22In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.
23When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.
24He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.
25It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him.
26All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.
27The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
28The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
29This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

2“Therefore my thoughts answer me, even by reason of my haste that is in me.
3I have heard the reproof which puts me to shame. The spirit of my understanding answers me.
4Don’t you know this from old time, since man was placed on earth,
5that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?
6Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds,
7yet he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
8He will fly away as a dream, and will not be found. Yes, he will be chased away like a vision of the night.
9The eye which saw him will see him no more, neither will his place see him any more.
10His children will seek the favor of the poor. His hands will give back his wealth.
11His bones are full of his youth, but youth will lie down with him in the dust.

14yet his food in his bowels is turned. It is cobra venom within him.

16He will suck cobra venom. The viper’s tongue will kill him.
17He will not look at the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and butter.
18He will restore that for which he labored, and will not swallow it down. He will not rejoice according to the substance that he has gotten.
19For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor. He has violently taken away a house, and he will not build it up.
20“Because he knew no quietness within him, he will not save anything of that in which he delights.
21There was nothing left that he didn’t devour, therefore his prosperity will not endure.
22In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him.
23When he is about to fill his belly, God will cast the fierceness of his wrath on him. It will rain on him while he is eating.
24He will flee from the iron weapon. The bronze arrow will strike him through.
25He draws it out, and it comes out of his body. Yes, the glittering point comes out of his liver. Terrors are on him.
26All darkness is laid up for his treasures. An unfanned fire will devour him. It will consume that which is left in his tent.
27The heavens will reveal his iniquity. The earth will rise up against him.
28The increase of his house will depart. They will rush away in the day of his wrath.
29This is the portion of a wicked man from God, the heritage appointed to him by God.”
