“Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
zurechtweisen mit Rede, die nichts frommt, / und mit Worten, durch die er nichts nützt? /
¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho?
Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

Und du, du verletzest die Gottesfurcht / und zerstörst die Andacht vor Gott! /
Tú también disipas el temor, y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.

Denn deine Schuld lehrt deinen Mund, / und du wählst die Sprache der Listigen. /

Was weisst du doch, das wir nicht wüssten? / Was verstehst du, das uns verborgen wäre? /
¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros?
What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand which is not in us?
Auch ein Grauer, ein Alter ist unter uns, / reicher an Tagen als dein Vater. /
Entre nosotros también hay cano, también hay viejo mucho mayor en días que tu padre.
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

Sind dir zu gering die Tröstungen Gottes / und das Wort, das gelinde mit dir (verfuhr)? /
¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti?
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?
Was reisst dein Herz dich fort, / und was rollen deine Augen, /
¿Por qué te enajena tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

dass du wider Gott dein Schnauben kehrst / und (solche) Worte entfahren lässest deinem Munde? /

Ich will dich berichten, höre mir zu, / und was ich gesehen, das will ich erzählen, /

Sein Leben lang ängstigt sich der Gottlose, / all die Jahre, die dem Tyrannen bestimmt sind. /

The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

Schreckensstimmen sind in seinen Ohren, / im Frieden überfällt ihn der Verderber. /
Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la paz le vendrá quien lo asuele.
A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

Er glaubt nicht, dass er wiederkehre aus dem Dunkel, / ersehen ist er für das Schwert. /
El no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y está mirando al cuchillo.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
He doesn’t believe that he will return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.
Er irrt umher nach Brot: wo ist es? / er weiss, dass Verderben ihm bereitet ist. /
Desasosegado á comer siempre, sabe que le está aparejado día de tinieblas.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

Der Tag der Finsternis erschreckt ihn, / Angst und Bangen überwältigt ihn, / wie ein König, gerüstet zum Sturm; /

denn wider Gott reckt er die Hand, / und dem Allmächtigen bietet er Trotz, /
Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se esforzó contra el Todopoderoso,
For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

rennt wider ihn mit (steifem) Nacken, / mit den dichtgedrängten Buckeln seiner Schilde. /
El le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos:
He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers,
Denn sein Gesicht hat er bedeckt mit Fett, / und Schmer angesetzt an seinen Lenden, /
Porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, é hizo pliegues sobre los ijares;
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

schlug seine Wohnung auf in verfemten Städten, / in Häusern, wo niemand wohnen sollte, / die zu Steinhaufen bestimmt waren. /
Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en montones.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

Er wird nicht reich, und sein Besitz hat nicht Bestand, / und seine Ähre neigt sich nicht zur Erde. /
No enriquecerá, ni será firme su potencia, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

Er entkommt nicht aus der Finsternis, / seine Schosse dörrt die Flamme, / und durch den Wind wird seine Frucht verweht. /

He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

Nicht traue er auf Nichtiges, er ist getäuscht; / denn das Nichts wird seine Vergeltung sein! /
No confíe el iluso en la vanidad; porque ella será su recompensa.
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his reward.
Ehe sein Tag kommt, erfüllt es sich, / und sein Palmzweig grünt nicht mehr. /
