1Da nahm Zophar von Naama das Wort und sagte:
2»Soll (dieser) Wortschwall ohne Antwort bleiben und dieser Zungenheld recht behalten?
3Dein Gerede sollte Männer zum Schweigen bringen, und du solltest höhnen dürfen, ohne von jemand widerlegt zu werden?!«
4Du hast ja doch behauptet: ›Meine Darlegung ist richtig‹, und: ›Ich stehe unsträflich in deinen Augen da!‹
5Ach, möchte Gott doch reden und seine Lippen gegen dich auftun
6und dir die verborgenen Tiefen der Weisheit offenbaren, daß sie allseitig an wahrem Wissen sind! Dann würdest du erkennen, daß Gott dir einen Teil deiner Sündenschuld noch zugute hält.
7Kannst du den Urgrund der Gottheit erreichen oder bis zur Vollkommenheit des Allmächtigen vordringen?
8Himmelhoch ist sie – was kannst du denn erreichen? Tiefer als das Totenreich ist sie – wie weit reicht denn dein Wissen?
9Länger als die Erde ist ihr Maß und breiter als das Meer.
10Wenn er daherfährt und in Verhaft nimmt und zur Gerichtsverhandlung ruft – wer will ihm da wehren?
11Denn er kennt die nichtswürdigen Leute und nimmt das Unrecht wahr, ohne besonderer Aufmerksamkeit zu bedürfen.«
12»Da muß selbst ein Hohlkopf zu Verstand kommen und ein Wildeselfüllen zum Menschen umgeboren werden.
13Wenn du nun dein Herz in die rechte Verfassung setzen und deine Hände zu ihm ausbreiten wolltest –
14klebt eine Schuld an deiner Hand, so entferne sie und laß in deinen Zelten kein Unrecht wohnen! –:
15ja, dann könntest du dein Angesicht vorwurfsfrei erheben und würdest wie aus Erz gegossen dastehen, frei von aller Furcht;
16ja, dann würdest du dein Leiden vergessen, würdest daran zurückdenken wie an Wasser, das sich verlaufen hat.
17Heller als der Mittag würde das Leben dir aufgehen; mag auch einmal Dunkel dich umgeben, wie lichter Morgen würde es werden.
18Du würdest dich dessen getrösten, daß noch Hoffnung vorhanden sei, und wenn du Umschau hieltest, getrost dich zum Schlafen niederlegen;
19du würdest dich lagern, ohne von jemand aufgeschreckt zu werden, und viele würden sich um deine Gunst bemühen.
20Dagegen die Augen der Frevler erlöschen: für sie ist jede Möglichkeit zum Entfliehen verloren, und ihre (einzige) Hoffnung ist – die Seele auszuhauchen!«

1Y RESPONDIÓ Sophar Naamathita, y dijo:
2¿Las muchas palabras no han de tener respuesta? ¿y el hombre parlero será justificado?
3¿Harán tus falacias callar á los hombres? ¿y harás escarnio, y no habrá quien te avergüence?
4Tú dices: Mi conversar es puro, y yo soy limpio delante de tus ojos.
5Mas ¡oh quién diera que Dios hablara, y abriera sus labios contigo,
6Y que te declarara los arcanos de la sabiduría, que son de doble valor que la hacienda! Conocerías entonces que Dios te ha castigado menos que tu iniquidad merece.
7¿Alcanzarás tú el rastro de Dios? ¿llegarás tú á la perfección del Todopoderoso?
8Es más alto que los cielos: ¿qué harás? Es más profundo que el infierno: ¿cómo lo conocerás?
9Su dimensión es más larga que la tierra, y más ancha que la mar.
10Si cortare, ó encerrare, ó juntare, ¿quién podrá contrarrestarle?
11Porque él conoce á los hombres vanos: ve asimismo la iniquidad, ¿y no hará caso?
12El hombre vano se hará entendido, aunque nazca como el pollino del asno montés.
13Si tú apercibieres tu corazón, y extendieres á él tus manos;
14Si alguna iniquidad hubiere en tu mano, y la echares de ti, y no consintieres que more maldad en tus habitaciones;
15Entonces levantarás tu rostro limpio de mancha, y serás fuerte y no temerás:
16Y olvidarás tu trabajo, ó te acordarás de él como de aguas que pasaron:
17Y en mitad de la siesta se levantará bonanza; resplandecerás, y serás como la mañana:
18Y confiarás, que habrá esperanza; y cavarás, y dormirás seguro:
19Y te acostarás, y no habrá quien te espante: y muchos te rogarán.
20Mas los ojos de los malos se consumirán, y no tendrán refugio; y su esperanza será agonía del alma.

1Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
3Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
4For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
5But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
6And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
7Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
9The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
11For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
12For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass’s colt.
13If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;
14If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
15For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
16Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
17And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
18And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
19Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
20But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
World English Bible
1Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered,
2“Shouldn’t the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified?
3Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, will no man make you ashamed?
4For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.’
5But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For true wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.
7“Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
8They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know?
9Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10If he passes by, or confines, or convenes a court, then who can oppose him?
11For he knows false men. He sees iniquity also, even though he doesn’t consider it.
12An empty-headed man becomes wise when a man is born as a wild donkey’s colt.
13“If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him.
14If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away. Don’t let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.
15Surely then you will lift up your face without spot. Yes, you will be steadfast, and will not fear,
16for you will forget your misery. You will remember it like waters that have passed away.
17Life will be clearer than the noonday. Though there is darkness, it will be as the morning.
18You will be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you will search, and will take your rest in safety.
19Also you will lie down, and no one will make you afraid. Yes, many will court your favor.
20But the eyes of the wicked will fail. They will have no way to flee. Their hope will be the giving up of the spirit.”
