Certo dia, Abimeleque, filho de Jerubaal, visitou os tios — irmãos da mãe dele — em Siquém. Conversou com todo o grupo de famílias de sua mãe.

Y FUÉSE Abimelech hijo de Jerobaal á Sichêm, á los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

“Vão falar com os chefes de Siquém”, pediu ele, “e perguntem se preferem ser governados por setenta homens — os setenta filhos de Jerubaal — ou por um só homem. É bom lembrar que também sou da mesma carne e do mesmo sangue de vocês”.

Yo os ruego que habléis á oídos de todos los de Sichêm: ¿Qué tenéis por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal; ó que os señoree un varón? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

Então os tios de Abimeleque procuraram os oficiais da cidade e apresentaram a proposta dele. Os cidadãos de Siquém concordaram em seguir Abimeleque, e concluíram: “Afinal, ele é nosso irmão!”

Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre á oídos de todos los de Sichêm todas estas palabras: y el corazón de ellos se inclinó en favor de Abimelech, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.

And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

Então deram a ele setenta peças de prata, retiradas do templo do deus Baal-Berite. Com esse valor, ele contratou alguns homens sem caráter e vadios, que concordaram em tornar-se seus seguidores.

Y viniendo á la casa de su padre en Ophra, mató á sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: mas quedó Jotham, el más pequeño hijo de Jerobaal, que se escondió.

And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

Então foi feita uma assembleia com todos os cidadãos de Siquém e de Bete-Milo. Resolveram proclamar Abimeleque rei, junto do carvalho do monumento, perto de Siquém.

Y reunidos todos los de Sichêm con toda la casa de Millo, fueron y eligieron á Abimelech por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Sichêm.

And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Quando Jotão ficou sabendo disso, subiu ao topo do monte Gerizim, e dali gritou em alta voz: “Cidadãos de Siquém! Se vocês querem a bênção de Deus, escutem o que vou dizer!

Y como se lo dijesen á Jotham, fué y púsose en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y díjoles: Oidme, varones de Sichêm; que Dios os oiga.

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

Certa vez as árvores resolveram eleger um rei. Primeiro disseram à oliveira: ‘Seja o nosso rei’.

The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.

“Mas a oliveira respondeu: ‘Vocês acham que eu deveria deixar de produzir o óleo que agrada a Deus e aos homens, só para dominar sobre as outras árvores?’

Mas la oliva respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi pingüe jugo, con el que por mi causa Dios y los hombres son honrados, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

“Então as árvores disseram à figueira: ‘Seja o nossa rei!’

And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

“Mas a figueira respondeu: ‘Vocês acham que eu deveria deixar de produzir a minha doçura e meu bom fruto, para dominar sobre as outras árvores?’

Y respondió la higuera: ¿Tengo de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

“Então as árvores falaram com a videira: ‘Venha você reinar sobre nós!’

Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

“Mas a videira respondeu: ‘Vocês acham que eu deveria deixar de produzir o vinho, que alegra a Deus e aos homens, só para dominar sobre as outras árvores?’

Y la vid les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi mosto, que alegra á Dios y á los hombres, por ir á ser grande sobre los árboles?

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

“Então todas as árvores disseram ao espinheiro: ‘Seja você o nosso rei!’

Dijeron entonces todos los árboles al escaramujo: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’

“O espinheiro respondeu às árvores: ‘Se realmente querem ungir-me rei sobre vocês, venham procurar abrigo debaixo da minha sombra! Se não, saia fogo de mim e queime os grandes cedros do Líbano!’

Y el escaramujo respondió á los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid, y aseguraos debajo de mi sombra: y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que devore los cedros del Líbano.

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

“Agora, pois, vejam bem se estão tomando a decisão certa, fazendo de Abimeleque rei sobre vocês, e se foram justos para com Jerubaal e sua família; vejam se o que estão fazendo é o que ele merece, lembrando os feitos dele.

Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey á Abimelech, y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme á la obra de sus manos;

Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

Pois meu pai lutou por vocês e arriscou a sua vida para livrá-los dos midianitas.

(Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó lejos su vida por libraros de mano de Madián;

(For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

Apesar disso, vocês se rebelaram contra ele, e mataram os seus setenta filhos sobre uma pedra. E agora vocês escolheram Abimeleque, filho de uma escrava de Gideão, para ser rei sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, só porque ele é irmão de vocês!

Y vosotros os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Sichêm á Abimelech, hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano:)

And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

Se vocês têm certeza de que agiram com sinceridade para com Jerubaal e a sua família, muito bem; sejam felizes com Abimeleque!

Si con verdad y con integridad habéis obrado hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelech, y él goce de vosotros.

If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;

Mas, se não foi assim, que de Abimeleque saia fogo e queime os cidadãos de Siquém e de Bete-Milo; e que saia fogo dos cidadãos de Siquém e de Bete-Milo e queime Abimeleque!”

Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelech, que consuma á los de Sichêm y á la casa de Millo; y fuego salga de los de Sichêm y de la casa de Millo, que consuma á Abimelech.

But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

Logo depois disso, Jotão fugiu e ficou morando em Beer, porque tinha medo do seu irmão Abimeleque.

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

Depois de três anos de reinado de Abimeleque sobre Israel,

Deus enviou um espírito mau entre ele e os cidadãos de Siquém, que agiram traiçoeiramente contra o rei Abimeleque.

Envió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abimelech y los hombres de Sichêm: que los de Sichêm se levantaron contra Abimelech:

Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

Tudo isso aconteceu para que a violência contra os setenta filhos de Jerubaal e o sangue deles caíssem sobre Abimeleque, seu irmão, e sobre os habitantes de Siquém, porque os moradores de Siquém colaboraram com Abimeleque no assassinato dos próprios irmãos dele!

Para que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, viniera á ponerse sobre Abimelech su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Sichêm que corroboraron las manos de él para matar á sus hermanos.

That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

Os cidadãos de Siquém mandaram alguns homens armarem emboscadas nas trilhas das colinas. Abimeleque, porém, ficou sabendo disso.

Y pusiéronle los de Sichêm asechadores en las cumbres de los montes, los cuales salteaban á todos los que pasaban junto á ellos por el camino; de lo que fué dado aviso á Abimelech.

And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

Nesse meio-tempo, Gaal, filho de Ebede, mudou-se com seus irmãos para Siquém. Todos confiavam nele!

Naquele ano, saíram ao campo, colheram as uvas, pisaram-nas e realizaram uma festa no templo do deus local. Enquanto comiam e bebiam, logo começaram a amaldiçoar Abimeleque.

Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñas, y pisaron la uva, é hicieron alegrías; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron á Abimelech.

And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

Não é ele filho de Jerubaal, e não é Zebul o seu braço direito? Melhor seria que Hamor, o pai de Siquém, fosse o nosso rei! Abaixo Abimeleque!

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

Ah! Se vocês me aceitassem como seu líder! Logo veriam o que eu faria a Abimeleque! Eu diria a ele: Trate de preparar bem o seu exército, e venha!”

Fuérame dado este pueblo bajo de mi mano, yo echaría luego á Abimelech. Y decía á Abimelech: Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal.

And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”

Zebul era o governador da cidade. Quando soube o que Gaal, filho de Ebede, andava dizendo, ficou furioso!

Mandou astutamente mensageiros a Abimeleque, com a seguinte mensagem: “Gaal, filho de Ebede, e seus irmãos vieram a Siquém, e estão levando a cidade a se rebelar contra você.

Y envió sagazmente mensajeros á Abimelech, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido á Sichêm, y he aquí, que han cercado la ciudad contra ti.

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

Venha, pois, com o seu exército, de noite, e fique com ele escondido no campo.

Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

De manhã, ao nascer do sol, ataque a cidade de surpresa. E quando enfrentar Gaal e o povo que estiver com ele, faça o que quiser com eles!”

Y por la mañana al salir del sol te levantarás y acometerás la ciudad: y él y el pueblo que está con él saldrán contra ti, y tu harás con él según que se te ofrecerá.

And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

Assim Abimeleque e os homens que estavam com ele saíram de noite, formaram quatro grupos e prepararam uma emboscada em volta de Siquém.

Levantándose pues de noche Abimelech y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Sichêm con cuatro compañías.

Na manhã seguinte, enquanto Gaal, filho de Ebede, e outros oficiais tratavam de vários assuntos, junto da porta da cidade, as tropas de Abimeleque saíram dos seus esconderijos.

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

“Não, olhe para lá”, disse Gaal. “Tenho certeza que vem vindo gente descendo do centro da terra. Olhe! Lá vêm outros, pela estrada do carvalho dos Adivinhadores!”

And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

Zebul, porém, falou: “Onde foi parar toda a sua conversa? Não foi você que disse: ‘Quem é Abimeleque? E por que ele deveria ser o nosso rei?’ Não foi desses homens que você zombou? Pois vá e lute contra eles!”

Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora aquel tu hablar, diciendo: Quién es Abimelech para que le sirvamos? ¿No es este el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él.

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”

Então, Gaal chefiou os homens de Siquém e enfrentou Abimeleque.

No dia seguinte, os homens de Siquém saíram para guerrear de novo nos campos, e Abimeleque ficou sabendo disso.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

Ele tinha deixado três grupos de soldados escondidos por perto, nos campos. Quando viu os homens saírem da cidade, Abimeleque os atacou.

El cual, tomando gente, repartióla en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo: y como miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y levantóse contra ellos, é hiriólos:

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

As tropas chefiadas por Abimeleque avançaram até a porta da cidade. Enquanto isso, os outros dois grupos mataram os homens de Siquém nos campos.

Pues Abimelech y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon á la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y las dos compañías acometieron á todos los que estaban en el campo, y los hirieron.

Assim, cada um deles cortou depressa um galho e seguiram Abimeleque até a fortaleza subterrânea. Ali empilharam os galhos em cima da fortaleza e a incendiaram. Assim, todos os que estavam na torre de Siquém morreram! Os que morreram foram cerca de mil homens e mulheres.

Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron á Abimelech, y pusiéronlas junto á la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas á la fortaleza: por manera que todos los de la torre de Sichêm murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

“Tire a sua espada e mate-me!”, ordenou ele ao ajudante de armas. “Que ninguém diga que uma mulher matou Abimeleque!” O jovem soldado obedeceu e atravessou-o com a espada, e ele morreu.

Y luego llamó él á su escudero, y díjole: Saca tu espada y mátame, porque no se diga de mí: Una mujer lo mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.

Quando os israelitas comandados por Abimeleque viram que ele estava morto, debandaram e voltaram para casa.

Deste modo Deus retribuiu todo o mal que Abimeleque tinha feito a seu pai, matando seus setenta irmãos.

And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
