1Das sind aber die Völker, die Jahwe da ließ, um durch sie Israel auf die Probe zu stellen, alle diejenigen, welche alle die Kämpfe um Kanaan nicht kannten, -
2nur um der Geschlechter der Israeliten willen, um sie die Kriegführung zu lehren, nur die, welche von den früheren Kämpfen nichts wußten:
3die fünf Fürsten der Philister, alle Kanaaniter, die Sidonier und die Heviter, die auf dem Gebirge Libanon vom Berge Baal Hermon bis da, wo es nach Hamath hineingeht, wohnen.
4Sie dienten dazu, um Israel auf die Probe zu stellen, um zu erfahren, ob sie den Geboten Jahwes gehorchen würden, die er ihren Vätern durch Mose gegeben hatte.
5So wohnten die Israeliten inmitten der Kanaaniter, Hethiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Heviter und Jebusiter,
6nahmen sich ihre Töchter zu Frauen und verheirateten ihre Töchter an die Söhne jener und dienten ihren Göttern.
7Und die Israeliten thaten, was Jahwe mißfiel, und vergaßen Jahwe, ihren Gott, und verehrten die Baale und die Ascheren.
8Da entbrannte der Zorn Jahwes über Israel, so daß er sie in die Gewalt Kusan Risathaims, des Königs von Aram Naharim, verkaufte; und die Israeliten waren Kusan Risathaim acht Jahre unterthan.
9Darauf schrieen die Israeliten zu Jahwe um Hilfe, und Jahwe ließ den Israeliten einen Retter erstehen, der errettete sie: Othniel, den Sohn des Kenas, den jüngeren Bruder Kalebs.
10Und der Geist Jahwes kam über ihn, so daß er Israel zu seinem Rechte verhalf. Und als er in den Kampf zog, gab ihm Jahwe Kusan Risathaim, den König von Aram, in seine Gewalt, und er gewann über Kusan Risathaim die Oberhand.
11Und das Land genoß vierzig Jahre lang Ruhe. Und Othniel, der Sohn des Kenas, starb.
12Aber die Israeliten thaten aufs neue, was Jahwe mißfiel. Da gab Jahwe Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, Macht über Israel, weil sie thaten, was Jahwe mißfiel.
13Der versammelte zu sich die Ammoniter und Amalekiter und zog hin, schlug Israel und besetzte die Palmenstadt.
14Die Israeliten waren Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, achtzehn Jahre unterthan.
15Da schrieen die Israeliten zu Jahwe, und Jahwe ließ ihnen einen Retter erstehen, Ehud, den Sohn des Benjaminiten Gera, einen linkshändigen Mann. Durch ihn sandten nämlich die Israeliten Tribut an Eglon, den König von Moab.
16Da fertigte sich Ehud ein Schwert, das hatte zwei Schneiden und war eine Spanne lang; das gürtete sich Ehud unter seinem Gewand an seine rechte Seite.
17So brachte er Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, den Tribut. Eglon war aber ein sehr feister Mann.
18Als er nun die Überreichung des Tributs vollzogen hatte, geleitete er die Leute, welche den Tribut getragen hatten;
19er selbst aber kehrte bei den Schnitzbildern am Gilgal wieder um und ließ Eglon sagen: Ich habe ein vertrauliches Wort an dich, o König! Da gebot er: Bst! darauf traten alle, die ihn umstanden, ab.
20Als nun Ehud zu ihm eingetreten war, während er allein in seinem kühlen Obergemache saß, sprach Ehud: Ich habe einen Gottesspruch an dich! Da erhob er sich von seinem Sitze.
21Da griff Ehud mit seiner linken Hand zu, nahm das Schwert von seiner rechten Seite und stieß es ihm in den Leib,
22so daß nach der Klinge auch das Heft noch eindrang, und das Fett die Klinge umschloß, denn er hatte das Schwert nicht wieder aus seinem Leibe herausgezogen. Dann ging er nach dem Dache hinaus.
23Dann ging Ehud nach der Halle hinaus, schloß die Thüren des Obergemachs hinter sich und verriegelte sie.
24Als er aber eben hinausgegangen war, kamen seine Höflinge; als diese bemerkten, daß die Thüren des Obergemachs verriegelt waren, dachten sie: Er wird wohl nur in der kühlen Kammer seine Notdurft verrichten.
25So warteten sie endlos. Als er aber die Thüren des Obergemachs immer noch nicht öffnete, nahmen sie den Schlüssel und schlossen auf; da fanden sie ihren Herrn tot am Boden liegend.
26Während sie aber gezögert hatten, war Ehud entronnen; er war unterdes bis an die Schnitzbilder hinaus gelangt und entkam so nach Seira.
27Als er aber heimkam, stieß er auf dem Gebirge Ephraim in die Posaune. Da stiegen die Israeliten mit ihm herab vom Gebirge und er an ihrer Spitze.
28Und er gebot ihnen: Steigt mir nach hinab, denn Jahwe hat eure Feinde, die Moabiter, in eure Gewalt gegeben. Da stiegen sie ihm nach herab, besetzten die Jordanfurten nach Moab zu und ließen niemand übersetzen.
29Und sie besiegten zu jener Zeit die Moabiter, etwa 10000 Mann, lauter starke und streitbare Leute, so daß niemand entrann.
30So mußten sich die Moabiter damals unter die Gewalt Israels beugen. Und das Land hatte achtzig Jahre lang Ruhe. Ehud aber richtete sie, bis er starb.
31Und nach ihm trat Samgar, der Sohn Anaths, auf; der schlug die Philister, 600 Mann, mit einem Ochsenstecken, und auch er errettete Israel.

1ESTAS, pues, son las gentes que dejó Jehová para probar con ellas á Israel, á todos aquellos que no habían conocido todas las guerras de Canaán;
2Para que al menos el linaje de los hijos de Israel conociese, para enseñarlos en la guerra, siquiera fuese á los que antes no la habían conocido:
3Cinco príncipes de los Philisteos, y todos los Cananeos, y los Sidonios, y los Heveos que habitaban en el monte Líbano: desde el monte de Baal-hermón hasta llegar á Hamath.
4Estos pues fueron para probar por ellos á Israel, para saber si obedecerían á los mandamientos de Jehová, que él había prescrito á sus padres por mano de Moisés.
5Así los hijos de Israel habitaban entre los Cananeos, Hetheos, Amorrheos, Pherezeos, Heveos, y Jebuseos:
6Y tomaron de sus hijas por mujeres, y dieron sus hijas á los hijos de ellos, y sirvieron á sus dioses.
7Hicieron, pues, los hijos de Israel lo malo en ojos de Jehová: y olvidados de Jehová su Dios, sirvieron á los Baales, y á los ídolos de los bosques.
8Y la saña de Jehová se encendió contra Israel, y vendiólos en manos de Chusan-risathaim, rey de Mesopotamia; y sirvieron los hijos de Israel á Chusan-risathaim ocho años.
9Y clamaron los hijos de Israel á Jehová; y Jehová suscitó salvador á los hijos de Israel y librólos; es á saber, á Othoniel hijo de Cenez, hermano menor de Caleb.
10Y el espíritu de Jehová fué sobre él, y juzgó á Israel, y salió á batalla, y Jehová entregó en su mano á Chusan-risathaim, rey de Siria, y prevaleció su mano contra Chusan-risathaim.
11Y reposó la tierra cuarenta años; y murió Othoniel, hijo de Cenez.
12Y tornaron los hijos de Israel á hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; y Jehová esforzó á Eglón rey de Moab contra Israel, por cuanto habían hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová.
13Y juntó consigo á los hijos de Ammón y de Amalec, y fué, é hirió á Israel, y tomó la ciudad de las palmas.
14Y sirvieron los hijos de Israel á Eglón rey de los Moabitas diez y ocho años.
15Y clamaron los hijos de Israel á Jehová; y Jehová les suscitó salvador, á Aod, hijo de Gera, Benjamita, el cual tenía cerrada la mano derecha. Y los hijos de Israel enviaron con él un presente á Eglón rey de Moab.
16Y Aod se había hecho un puñal de dos filos, de un codo de largo; y ciñósele debajo de sus vestidos á su lado derecho.
17Y presentó el presente á Eglón rey de Moab; y era Eglón hombre muy grueso.
18Y luego que hubo presentado el don, despidió á la gente que lo había traído.
19Mas él se volvió desde los ídolos que están en Gilgal, y dijo: Rey, una palabra secreta tengo que decirte. El entonces dijo: Calla. Y saliéronse de con él todos los que delante de él estaban.
20Y llegóse Aod á él, el cual estaba sentado solo en una sala de verano. Y Aod dijo: Tengo palabra de Dios para ti. El entonces se levantó de la silla.
21Mas Aod metió su mano izquierda, y tomó el puñal de su lado derecho, y metióselo por el vientre;
22De tal manera que la empuñadura entró también tras la hoja, y la grosura encerró la hoja, que él no sacó el puñal de su vientre: y salió el estiércol.
23Y saliendo Aod al patio, cerró tras sí las puertas de la sala.
24Y salido él, vinieron sus siervos, los cuales viendo las puertas de la sala cerradas, dijeron: Sin duda él cubre sus pies en la sala de verano.
25Y habiendo esperado hasta estar confusos, pues que él no abría las puertas de la sala, tomaron la llave y abrieron: y he aquí su señor caído en tierra muerto.
26Mas entre tanto que ellos se detuvieron, Aod se escapó, y pasando los ídolos, salvóse en Seirath.
27Y como hubo entrado, tocó el cuerno en el monte de Ephraim, y los hijos de Israel descendieron con él del monte, y él iba delante de ellos.
28Entonces él les dijo: Seguidme, porque Jehová ha entregado vuestros enemigos los Moabitas en vuestras manos. Y descendieron en pos de él, y tomaron los vados del Jordán á Moab, y no dejaron pasar á ninguno.
29Y en aquel tiempo hirieron de los Moabitas como diez mil hombres, todos valientes y todos hombres de guerra; no escapó hombre.
30Así quedó Moab sojuzgado aquel día bajo la mano de Israel: y reposó la tierra ochenta años.
31Después de éste fué Samgar hijo de Anat, el cual hirió seiscientos hombres de los Filisteos con una aguijada de bueyes; y él también salvó á Israel.

1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
8Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
9And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
11And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.
13And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
17And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
18And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
22And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
23Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
24When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
25And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
26And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
27And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
28And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
World English Bible
1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before:
3the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
4They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the LORD’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.
5The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
6They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.
7The children of Israel did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
8Therefore the LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.
9When the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10The LORD’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.
11The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the LORD’s sight.
13He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.
14The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15But when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a savior for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
16Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.
17He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.
18When Ehud had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.
19But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.
20Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.
21Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body.
22The handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.
23Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.
24After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”
25They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.
26Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.
27When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.
28He said to them, “Follow me; for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.
29They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man and every man of valor. No man escaped.
30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.
31After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.
