1In jener Zeit, als es keinen König in Israel gab, war ein levitischer Mann auf der Rückseite des Gebirges Ephraim zu Gast. Er nahm sich ein Mädchen aus Bethlehem in Juda zum Nebenweib.
2Sein Nebenweib aber betrog ihn und ging von ihm in ihres Vaters Haus nach Bethlehem in Juda. Dort lebte sie vier Monate.
3Da machte sich ihr Mann auf und ging ihr nach, ihr zuzureden und sie zurückzugewinnen. Er aber hatte seinen Burschen und ein paar Esel bei sich. Sie führte ihn nun in ihres Vaters Haus. Da sah ihn des Mädchens Vater und freute sich über seine Ankunft.
4Und sein Schwiegervater, des Mädchens Vater, gab ihm die Hand, und er blieb drei Tage bei ihm. Sie aßen und tranken und blieben über Nacht.
5Am vierten Tage standen sie früh auf, und er erhob sich zu gehen. Da sprach des Mädchens Vater zu seinem Schwiegersohn: "Stärke dein Herz mit einem Bissen Brot! Hernach mögt ihr reisen."
6Sie setzten sich, aßen beide zusammen und tranken. Dann sprach des Mädchens Vater zu dem Mann: "Entschließe dich und bleibe über Nacht und sei guter Dinge!"
7Der Mann aber stand auf, um zu gehen. Aber sein Schwiegervater drang in ihn, und er blieb nochmals über Nacht da.
8Am fünften Tage stand er früh auf, um zu gehen. Da sprach des Mädchens Vater: "Stärke doch dein Herz und verweilet bis zur Neige des Tages!" So aßen sie miteinander.
9Dann stand der Mann auf, um zu gehen, er, sein Nebenweib und sein Diener. Da sprach sein Schwiegervater, des Mädchens Vater, zu ihm: "Der Tag neigt sich zum Abendwerden. Bleibt doch über Nacht! Der Tag geht zur Neige, bleibe hier über Nacht und sei guter Dinge! Morgen früh zieht eures Wegs, daß du zu deinem Zelte kommst!"
10Aber der Mann wollte nicht mehr übernachten. Er stand auf, zog fort und kam bis vor Jebus, das ist Jerusalem. Er hatte ein Paar gesattelter Esel bei sich und sein Nebenweib.
11Sie waren eben bei Jebus, als es spät am Tage wurde! Da sprach der Bursche zu seinem Herrn: "Komm! Laßt uns in dieser Jebusiterstadt einkehren und hier übernachten!"
12Aber sein Herr sprach zu ihm: "Wir wollen nicht in einer fremden Stadt einkehren, in der kein Israelite ist. Wir ziehen weiter bis Gibea."
13Dann sprach er zu seinem Burschen: "Komm! Wir wollen nach einer der Ortschaften gehen! Wir übernachten in Gibea oder in Rama."
14So zogen sie des Weges weiter. Da ging die Sonne unter bei Gibea in Benjamin.
15Hier bogen sie nun vom Wege ab, um in Gibea zu übernachten. Als er ankam, setzte er sich auf den Marktplatz der Stadt. Aber niemand nahm sie ins Haus zum Übernachten.
16Da kam ein alter Mann abends von seiner Feldarbeit. Der Mann war vom Gebirge Ephraim und selber Fremdling zu Gibea. Die Leute des Ortes aber waren Benjaminiten.
17Er hob nun seine Augen und sah den Wandersmann auf dem Marktplatz der Stadt. Da fragte der alte Mann: "Wohin gehst du? Woher kommst du?"
18Er sprach zu ihm: "Wir ziehen von Bethlehem in Juda nach der Rückseite des Gebirges Ephraim. Ich bin von dort. Ich reiste nach Bethlehem in Juda. Ich bin nun unterwegs nach dem eigenen Hause. Aber niemand nimmt mich in sein Haus.
19Wir haben Stroh und Futter für unsere Esel. Auch Brot und Wein für mich und deine Magd und für den Burschen sind bei deinem Sklaven. Es fehlt an nichts."
20Da sprach der alte Mann: "Friede sei mit dir! Mir obliege all dein Mangel allein! Nur auf der Straße darfst du nicht übemachten."
21Dann führte er ihn in sein Haus und fütterte die Esel. Sie aber wuschen sich die Füße, aßen und tranken.
22Sie taten eben ihrem Herzen gütlich. Da umringten die Männer der Stadt, Teufelsbuben, das Haus, klopften an die Tür und sprachen zu dem alten Mann, dem Herrn des Hauses: "Gib den Mann heraus, der in dein Haus gekommen, daß wir ihn erkennen!"
23Da ging der Mann, der Hausherr, zu ihnen hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: "Nicht doch! Meine Brüder! Tut doch nichts Böses! Nachdem dieser Mann in mein Haus gekommen, dürft ihr keine solche Schandtat tun.
24Da ist meine jungfräuliche Tochter und ihre Dienerin. Ich will sie herausgeben. Ihnen tut Gewalt an! Mit ihnen tut nach eurer Laune! Aber diesem Manne dürft ihr keine solche Schandtat antun."
25Aber die Männer wollten nicht auf ihn hören. Da ergriff der Mann sein Nebenweib und brachte sie ihnen auf die Straße. Und sie erkannten sie und trieben Mutwillen mit ihr die ganze Nacht bis zum Morgen. Sie ließen sie erst los beim Anbruch der Morgenröte.
26Bei der Morgenwende aber kam das Weib und fiel nieder vor der Haustür des Mannes, bei dem ihr Herr war, und lag so bis zum lichten Tage.
27Ihr Herr aber stand am Morgen auf, öffnete die Haustür und trat hinaus, um seines Weges zu ziehen. Da lag das Weib, sein Nebenweib, vor der Haustür, die Hände auf der Schwelle.
28Er sprach sie an: "Steh auf! Wir wollen fort." Aber keine Antwort! Da lud er sie auf den Esel. Und der Mann machte sich auf und zog nach seiner Heimat.
29Als er heimkam, nahm er das Messer, faßte sein Nebenweib, zerstückelte es völlig in zwölf Stücke und sandte sie umher im ganzen Bereiche Israels.
30Da rief jeder, der es sah: "Solches ist nicht geschehen und nicht gesehen worden seit der Zeit, da Israels Söhne aus Ägypterland gezogen, bis auf diesen Tag. Denkt darüber nach! Ratet und sprechetl"

1EN aquellos días, cuando no había rey en Israel, hubo un Levita que moraba como peregrino en los lados del monte de Ephraim, el cual se había tomado mujer concubina de Beth-lehem de Judá.
2Y su concubina adulteró contra él, y fuese de él á casa de su padre, á Beth-lehem de Judá, y estuvo allá por tiempo de cuatro meses.
3Y levantóse su marido, y siguióla, para hablarle amorosamente y volverla, llevando consigo un criado suyo y un par de asnos; y ella le metió en la casa de su padre.
4Y viéndole el padre de la moza, salióle á recibir gozoso; y detúvole su suegro, padre de la moza, y quedó en su casa tres días, comiendo y bebiendo, y reposando allí.
5Y al cuarto día, como se levantaron de mañana, levantóse también el Levita para irse, y el padre de la moza dijo á su yerno: Conforta tu corazón con un bocado de pan, y después os iréis.
6Y sentáronse ellos dos juntos, y comieron y bebieron. Y el padre de la moza dijo al varón: Yo te ruego que te quieras quedar aquí esta noche, y alegraráse tu corazón.
7Y levantándose el varón para irse, el suegro le constriñó á que tornase y tuviese allí la noche.
8Y al quinto día levantándose de mañana para irse, díjole el padre de la moza: Conforta ahora tu corazón. Y habiendo comido ambos á dos, detuviéronse hasta que ya declinaba el día.
9Levantóse luego el varón para irse, él, y su concubina, y su criado. Entonces su suegro, el padre de la moza, le dijo: He aquí el día declina para ponerse el sol, ruégote que os estéis aquí la noche; he aquí que el día se acaba, ten aquí la noche, para que se alegre tu corazón; y mañana os levantaréis temprano á vuestro camino, y llegarás á tus tiendas.
10Mas el hombre no quiso quedar allí la noche, sino que se levantó y partió, y llegó hasta enfrente de Jebus, que es Jerusalem, con su par de asnos aparejados, y con su concubina.
11Y estando ya junto á Jebus, el día había declinado mucho: y dijo el criado á su señor: Ven ahora, y vámonos á esta ciudad de los Jebuseos, para que tengamos en ella la noche.
12Y su señor le respondió: No iremos á ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea de los hijos de Israel: antes pasaremos hasta Gabaa. Y dijo á su criado:
13Ven, lleguemos á uno de esos lugares, para tener la noche en Gabaa, ó en Rama.
14Pasando pues, caminaron, y púsoseles el sol junto á Gabaa, que era de Benjamín.
15Y apartáronse del camino para entrar á tener allí la noche en Gabaa; y entrando, sentáronse en la plaza de la ciudad, porque no hubo quien los acogiese en casa para pasar la noche.
16Y he aquí un hombre viejo, que á la tarde venía del campo de trabajar; el cual era del monte de Ephraim, y moraba como peregrino en Gabaa, pero los moradores de aquel lugar eran hijos de Benjamín.
17Y alzando el viejo los ojos, vió á aquel viajante en la plaza de la ciudad, y díjole: ¿A dónde vas, y de dónde vienes?
18Y él respondió: Pasamos de Beth-lehem de Judá á los lados del monte de Ephraim, de donde yo soy; y partí hasta Beth-lehem de Judá; y voy á la casa de Jehová, y no hay quien me reciba en casa,
19Aunque nosotros tenemos paja y de comer para nuestros asnos, y también tenemos pan y vino para mí y para tu sierva, y para el criado que está con tu siervo; de nada tenemos falta.
20Y el hombre viejo dijo: Paz sea contigo; tu necesidad toda sea solamente á mi cargo, con tal que no tengas la noche en la plaza.
21Y metiéndolos en su casa, dió de comer á sus asnos; y ellos se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.
22Y cuando estaban gozosos, he aquí, que los hombres de aquella ciudad, hombres hijos de Belial, cercan la casa, y batían las puertas, diciendo al hombre viejo dueño de la casa: Saca fuera el hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que lo conozcamos.
23Y saliendo á ellos aquel varón, amo de la casa, díjoles: No, hermanos míos, ruégoos que no cometáis este mal, pues que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa, no hagáis esta maldad.
24He aquí mi hija virgen, y la concubina de él: yo os las sacaré ahora; humilladlas, y haced con ellas como os pareciere, y no hagáis á este hombre cosa tan infame.
25Mas aquellos hombres no le quisieron oir; por lo que tomando aquel hombre su concubina, sacósela fuera: y ellos la conocieron, y abusaron de ella toda la noche hasta la mañana, y dejáronla cuando apuntaba el alba.
26Y ya que amanecía, la mujer vino, y cayó delante de la puerta de la casa de aquel hombre donde su señor estaba, hasta que fué de día.
27Y levantándose de mañana su señor, abrió las puertas de la casa, y salió para ir su camino, y he aquí, la mujer su concubina estaba tendida delante de la puerta de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral.
28Y él le dijo: Levántate, y vámonos. Mas ella no respondió. Entonces la levantó el varón, y echándola sobre su asno, levantóse y fuése á su lugar.
29Y en llegando á su casa, toma un cuchillo, y echa mano de su concubina, y despedázala con sus huesos en doce partes, y enviólas por todos los términos de Israel.
30Y todo el que lo veía, decía: Jamás se ha hecho ni visto tal cosa, desde el tiempo que los hijos de Israel subieron de la tierra de Egipto hasta hoy. Considerad esto, dad consejo, y hablad.

1And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
2And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.
3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
11And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
20And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

1In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.
2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.
3Her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.
5On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”
6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”
7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again.
8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.
9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”
10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”
12His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”
13He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
15They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.
16Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”
18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the LORD’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.
19Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”
20The old man said, “Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”
23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.
24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”
25But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.
26Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
27Her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28He said to her, “Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
29When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
30It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
