1Die Hungersnot lag aber schwer auf dem Lande.
2Als nun das Getreide, das sie aus Ägypten geholt hatten, vollständig aufgezehrt war, sagte ihr Vater zu ihnen: »Zieht noch einmal hin und kauft uns etwas Getreide zur Nahrung!«
3Da antwortete ihm Juda: »Der Mann hat uns eindringlich gewarnt mit den Worten: ›Ihr dürft mir nicht mehr vor die Augen treten, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!‹
4Willst du uns also unsern Bruder mitgeben, dann wollen wir hinabziehen und Lebensmittel für dich kaufen;
5willst du ihn aber nicht mitgehen lassen, so ziehen wir nicht hinab; denn der Mann hat uns gesagt: ›Ihr dürft mir nicht vor die Augen treten, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!‹«
6Da sagte Israel: »Warum habt ihr mir das zuleide getan, dem Manne mitzuteilen, daß ihr noch einen Bruder habt?«
7Sie antworteten: »Der Mann erkundigte sich genau nach uns und unserer Familie und fragte: ›Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr noch einen Bruder?‹ Da haben wir ihm auf seine Fragen Auskunft gegeben. Konnten wir denn wissen, daß er verlangen würde: ›Bringt euren Bruder her‹?«
8Juda aber sagte zu seinem Vater Israel: »Laß den Knaben mit mir gehen; dann wollen wir uns auf den Weg machen und hinziehen, damit wir am Leben bleiben und nicht verhungern, weder wir selbst noch du und unsere Familien!
9Ich will Bürge für ihn sein; von meiner Hand sollst du ihn zurückfordern! Wenn ich ihn nicht wieder zu dir bringe und ihn dir nicht vor die Augen stelle, so will ich Zeit meines Lebens schuldbeladen vor dir dastehen!
10Ja, hätten wir nicht so lange gezögert, gewiß, wir wären jetzt schon zweimal wieder zurückgekehrt.«
11Da erwiderte ihnen ihr Vater Israel: »Wenn es denn sein muß, so macht es folgendermaßen: Nehmt von den besten Erzeugnissen des Landes etwas in euren Säcken mit und überbringt es dem Manne als Geschenk: etwas Mastixbalsam und etwas Honig, Gewürzkräuter und Ladanum, Pistaziennüsse und Mandeln!
12Außerdem nehmt an Geld den doppelten Betrag mit! Denn auch das Geld, das sich oben in euren Säcken wiedergefunden hat, müßt ihr wieder mit euch nehmen: vielleicht liegt ein Versehen vor.
13Auch euren Bruder nehmt mit und macht euch auf den Weg und zieht wieder hin zu dem Manne!
14Der allmächtige Gott aber lasse euch Erbarmen bei dem Manne finden, daß er euren andern Bruder wieder mit euch ziehen läßt und auch Benjamin! Ich aber – wie ich einstmals kinderlos gewesen bin, so habe ich auch jetzt wieder keine Kinder!«
15So nahmen denn die Männer das betreffende Geschenk und den doppelten Betrag an Geld mit sich, dazu auch den Benjamin, machten sich auf den Weg, zogen nach Ägypten hinab und traten vor Joseph.
16Als nun Joseph den Benjamin bei ihnen sah, befahl er seinem Hausverwalter: »Führe die Männer ins Haus hinein, laß ein Schlachttier schlachten und richte zu, denn die Männer sollen zu Mittag bei mir speisen.«
17Der Mann tat, wie Joseph ihm befohlen hatte, und führte die Männer in Josephs Haus.
18Da fürchteten sie sich, daß sie in das Haus Josephs geführt wurden, und dachten: »Wegen des Geldes, das vorigesmal wieder in unsere Säcke geraten ist, werden wir hineingeführt: man will sich auf uns stürzen, uns überwältigen und uns zu Sklaven machen samt unsern Eseln.«
19Darum traten sie an den Hausverwalter Josephs heran und redeten ihn noch am Eingang des Hauses so an:
20»Bitte, mein Herr! Wir sind schon einmal hergekommen, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen.
21Als wir dann aber in die Herberge gekommen waren und unsere Säcke öffneten, da fand sich das Geld eines jeden oben in seinem Sack, unser Geld in vollem Betrage. Darum haben wir es jetzt wieder mitgebracht,
22haben aber auch noch anderes Geld bei uns, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer uns damals unser Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat.«
23Da antwortete jener: »Seid unbesorgt, ihr habt nichts zu fürchten! Euer Gott und eures Vaters Gott hat euch da heimlich einen Schatz in eure Säcke gelegt; euer Geld ist richtig an mich gekommen.« Dann führte er Simeon zu ihnen heraus.
24Hierauf ließ er die Männer in das Haus Josephs eintreten, gab ihnen Wasser zum Füßewaschen und ließ ihren Eseln Futter geben.
25Sie legten aber das Geschenk zurecht und warteten dann, bis Joseph zur Mittagszeit kommen würde; sie hatten nämlich gehört, daß sie dort speisen sollten.
26Als nun Joseph nach Hause gekommen war, brachten sie ihm das Geschenk, das sie bei sich hatten, ins Zimmer hinein und verneigten sich vor ihm bis zur Erde.
27Er begrüßte sie freundlich und fragte sie: »Geht es eurem alten Vater wohl, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Ist er noch am Leben?«
28Sie antworteten: »Deinem Knecht, unserm Vater, geht es wohl; ja, er ist noch am Leben.« Dabei verbeugten sie sich wiederholt tief.
29Als er dann hinblickte und Benjamin, seinen Vollbruder, den Sohn seiner eigenen Mutter, sah, fragte er: »Ist dies euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt?« Dann fügte er hinzu: »Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn!«
30Hierauf aber brach Joseph schnell ab, denn sein Gefühl überwältigte ihn beim Anblick seines Bruders, so daß er weinen mußte; er ging deshalb ins Innengemach und weinte sich dort aus.
31Dann wusch er sich das Gesicht und kam wieder heraus, nahm sich zusammen und befahl: »Tragt das Essen auf!«
32Da trug man für ihn besonders auf und für sie besonders und auch für die Ägypter, die bei ihm speisten, besonders; denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht mit den Hebräern zusammen speisen, weil das für die Ägypter eine Verunreinigung sein würde.
33Sie hatten aber ihre Plätze nach seiner Anweisung, vom Ältesten bis zum Jüngsten, genau nach ihrem Alter; darüber sahen sie sich einander verwundert an.
34Hierauf ließ er von den vor ihm stehenden Gerichten Anteile zu ihnen hintragen; es war aber dessen, was man Benjamin vorlegte, fünfmal so viel, als was man allen anderen vorlegte. Und sie tranken mit ihm und wurden guter Dinge.

1Y EL hambre era grande en la tierra.
2Y aconteció que como acabaron de comer el trigo que trajeron de Egipto, díjoles su padre: Volved, y comprad para nosotros un poco de alimento.
3Y respondió Judá, diciendo: Aquel varón nos protestó con ánimo resuelto, diciendo: No veréis mi rostro sin vuestro hermano con vosotros.
4Si enviares á nuestro hermano con nosotros, descenderemos y te compraremos alimento:
5Pero si no le enviares, no descenderemos: porque aquel varón nos dijo: No veréis mi rostro sin vuestro hermano con vosotros.
6Y dijo Israel: ¿Por qué me hicisteis tanto mal, declarando al varón que teníais más hermano?
7Y ellos respondieron: Aquel varón nos preguntó expresamente por nosotros, y por nuestra parentela, diciendo: ¿Vive aún vuestro padre? ¿tenéis otro hermano? y declarámosle conforme á estas palabras. ¿Podíamos nosotros saber que había de decir: Haced venir á vuestro hermano?
8Entonces Judá dijo á Israel su padre: Envía al mozo conmigo, y nos levantaremos é iremos, á fin que vivamos y no muramos nosotros, y tú, y nuestros niños.
9Yo lo fío; á mí me pedirás cuenta de él: si yo no te lo volviere y lo pusiere delante de ti, seré para ti el culpante todos los días:
10Que si no nos hubiéramos detenido, cierto ahora hubiéramos ya vuelto dos veces.
11Entonces Israel su padre les respondió: Pues que así es, hacedlo; tomad de lo mejor de la tierra en vuestros vasos, y llevad á aquel varón un presente, un poco de bálsamo, y un poco de miel, aromas y mirra, nueces y almendras.
12Y tomad en vuestras manos doblado dinero, y llevad en vuestra mano el dinero vuelto en las bocas de vuestros costales; quizá fué yerro.
13Tomad también á vuestro hermano, y levantaos, y volved á aquel varón.
14Y el Dios Omnipotente os dé misericordias delante de aquel varón, y os suelte al otro vuestro hermano, y á este Benjamín. Y si he de ser privado de mis hijos, séalo.
15Entonces tomaron aquellos varones el presente, y tomaron en su mano doblado dinero, y á Benjamín; y se levantaron, y descendieron á Egipto, y presentáronse delante de José.
16Y vió José á Benjamín con ellos, y dijo al mayordomo de su casa: Mete en casa á esos hombres, y degüella víctima, y aderézala; porque estos hombres comerán conmigo al medio día.
17E hizo el hombre como José dijo; y metió aquel hombre á los hombres en casa de José.
18Y aquellos hombres tuvieron temor, cuando fueron metidos en casa de José, y decían: Por el dinero que fué vuelto en nuestros costales la primera vez nos han metido aquí, para revolver contra nosotros, y dar sobre nosotros, y tomarnos por siervos á nosotros, y á nuestros asnos.
19Y llegáronse al mayordomo de la casa de José, y le hablaron á la entrada de la casa.
20Y dijeron: Ay, señor mío, nosotros en realidad de verdad descendimos al principio á comprar alimentos:
21Y aconteció que como vinimos al mesón y abrimos nuestros costales, he aquí el dinero de cada uno estaba en la boca de su costal, nuestro dinero en su justo peso; y hémoslo vuelto en nuestras manos.
22Hemos también traído en nuestras manos otro dinero para comprar alimentos: nosotros no sabemos quién haya puesto nuestro dinero en nuestros costales.
23Y él respondió: Paz á vosotros, no temáis; vuestro Dios y el Dios de vuestro padre os dió el tesoro en vuestros costales: vuestro dinero vino á mí. Y sacó á Simeón á ellos.
24Y metió aquel varón á aquellos hombres en casa de José: y dióles agua, y lavaron sus pies: y dió de comer á sus asnos.
25Y ellos prepararon el presente entretanto que venía José al medio día, porque habían oído que allí habían de comer pan.
26Y vino José á casa, y ellos le trajeron el presente que tenían en su mano dentro de casa, é inclináronse á él hasta tierra.
27Entonces les preguntó él cómo estaban, y dijo: ¿Vuestro padre, el anciano que dijisteis, lo pasa bien? ¿vive todavía?
28Y ellos respondieron: Bien va á tu siervo nuestro padre; aun vive. Y se inclinaron, é hicieron reverencia.
29Y alzando él sus ojos vió á Benjamín su hermano, hijo de su madre, y dijo: ¿Es éste vuestro hermano menor, de quien me hablasteis? Y dijo: Dios tenga misericordia de ti, hijo mío.
30Entonces José se apresuró, porque se conmovieron sus entrañas á causa de su hermano, y procuró donde llorar: y entróse en su cámara, y lloró allí.
31Y lavó su rostro, y salió fuera, y reprimióse, y dijo: Poned pan.
32Y pusieron para él aparte, y separadamente para ellos, y aparte para los Egipcios que con él comían: porque los Egipcios no pueden comer pan con los Hebreos, lo cual es abominación á los Egipcios.
33Y sentáronse delante de él, el mayor conforme á su mayoría, y el menor conforme á su menoría; y estaban aquellos hombres atónitos mirándose el uno al otro.
34Y él tomó viandas de delante de sí para ellos; mas la porción de Benjamín era cinco veces como cualquiera de las de ellos. Y bebieron, y alegráronse con él.

1And the famine was sore in the land.
2And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.
3And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
4If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:
5But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
6And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
7And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
8And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
9I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:
10For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.
11And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
12And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:
13Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:
14And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.
15And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
16And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.
17And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.
18And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.
19And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,
20And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:
21And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.
22And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
23And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.
24And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.
25And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.
26And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
27And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?
28And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.
29And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.
30And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.
31And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.
32And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
33And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.
34And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

1The famine was severe in the land.
2When they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.”
3Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’
4If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food;
5but if you don’t send him, we won’t go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’”
6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?”
7They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”
8Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.
9I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever;
10for if we hadn’t delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now.”
11Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;
12and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.
13Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man.
14May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
15The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.”
17The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house.
18The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.”
19They came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,
20and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food.
21When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand.
22We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.”
23He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them.
24The man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder.
25They prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.
26When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to the earth before him.
27He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?”
28They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly.
29He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.”
30Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there.
31He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.”
32They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
33They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled with one another.
34He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.
