1Und es geschah zu (in) jener (dieser) Zeit, dass Juda hinabging (hinabstieg) von {mit} seinen Brüdern. Und er kehrte zu (bei) einem adullamitischen Mann ein. Sein (dessen) Name war Hira.
2Und es sah dort Juda die Tochter eines eines kanaanäischen Mannes. Sein (dessen) Name war Schua. Und er nahm sie sich zur Frau und kam zu ihr.
3Und sie wurde schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Und er (Juda) nannte seinen Namen Er.
4Und sie wurde wieder (noch einmal) schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Und er (Juda) nannte seinen Namen Onan.
5Und sie wurde noch einmal schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Und er (Juda) nannte seinen Namen Schela. {Und} Er war in Kesib, als sie ihn gebar.
6Und es nahm (fand) Juda eine Frau für Er, seinen Erstgeborenen. {Und} Ihr Name war Tamar.
7Und es war Er (Und es begab sich, dass...), der Erstgeborene Judas, böse (schlecht) in den Augen JHWHs, und es tötete ihn JHWH.
8Und es sagte Juda zu Onan: Geh (gehe ein, komm) zur Frau deines Bruders und gehe mit ihr die Schwagerehe ein und bringe hervor (stelle auf) Nachkommen (Samen) für deinen Bruder.
9Und es wusste Onan, dass die Nachkommen (der Same) nicht für ihn sein würden, sodass, wann immer er zur Frau seines Bruders kam, er seinen Samen auf dem Boden (auf den Boden) verderben ließ (vernichtete), ohne seinem Bruder einen Nachkommen (Samen) zu geben.
10Und es war böse (schlecht) in den Augen JHWHs, was er (Onan) getan hatte, und er tötete auch ihn.
11Und es sagte Juda zu Tamar, seiner Schwiegertochter: Bleibe (wohne, lass dich nieder) als Witwe im Haus deines Vaters, bis mein Sohn Schela erwachsen (groß) ist. Denn er sagte sich: Dass er nicht auch noch stirbt wie seine Brüder! Und es ging Tamar und ließ sich nieder (wohnte) im Haus ihres Vaters.
12Und es häuften sich die Tage (es vergingen viele Tage), und es starb die Tochter Schuas, die Frau Judas. Und es beendete Juda die Trauerzeit (war getröstet), und er ging hinauf zu den Schafscherern nach Timna, er und Hira, sein Freund der Adullamiter.
13Und es wurde Tamar folgendes erzählt (berichtet): Siehe, dein Schwiegervater geht gerade hinauf (ist unterwegs hinauf) nach Timna, um seine Schafe (sein Kleinvieh) zu scheren.
14Und sie zog ihre Witwenkleider (die Kleiner ihrer Witwenschaft) aus {von auf ihr}, und sie bedeckte sich mit einem (dem) Schleier und verhüllte sich. Und sie setzte sich in den Ortseingang von Enajim, das auf dem Weg nach Timna liegt. Denn sie hatte gesehen, dass Schela groß (erwachsen) geworden war. Sie war ihm aber nicht als Frau gegeben worden.
15Und es sah sie Juda und hielt sie für eine Prostituierte (Dirne, Hure), denn sie hatte ihr Gesicht bedeckt (verdeckt).
16Und er bog zu ihr ab an den Weg und sagte: {Auf} Ich will zu dir kommen! Denn er wusste nicht, dass es (sie) seine Schwiegertochter war. Und sie sagte: Was gibst du mir (wirst du mir geben), wenn du zu mir kommen darfst (kommst)?
17Und er sagte: Ich werde (will) dir einen jungen (kleinen) Ziegenbock (Ziegenböckchen, Ziegenböcklein) von der Herde schicken. Und sie sagte: Wenn du mir ein Pfand gibst, bis du ihn schickst!
18Und er sagte: Was ist das Pfand, das ich dir geben soll? Und sie sagte: Deinen Siegel(ring) und deine Schnur und deinen Stab, der in deiner Hand ist. Und er gab ihr alles. Und er kam zu ihr, und sie wurde schwanger von ihm.
19Und sie {stand auf und} ging weg und legte ihren Schleier ab {von auf ihr} und zog ihre Witwenkleider (die Kleider ihrer Witwenschaft) an.
20Und es schickte Juda den jungen Ziegenbock in (mit) der Hand (vermittels) seines Freundes, des Adullamiters, um das Pfand aus der Hand (von) der Frau zu holen (nehmen). Er fand sie aber nicht.
21Und er (der Adullamiter) fragte die Männer ihres (des) Ortes {Folgendes}: Wo ist die (jene) Tempelprostituierte, die in Enajim am Weg (an der Straße) war, saß? Und sie sagten: Hier ist keine Tempelprosituierte gewesen.
22Und er kehrte zurück zu Juda und sagte: Ich habe sie nicht gefunden! Und auch (sogar) die Männer des Ortes haben gesagt: Hier ist keine Tempelprostituierte gewesen.
23Und es sagte Juda: Sie soll das Pfand für sich nehmen (behalten), damit wir nicht zum Gespött (zum Verachtung, zu Verachteten) werden. Siehe, ich habe einen jungen (kleinen) Ziegenbock (Ziegenböckchen, Ziegenböcklein) geschickt, aber du hast sie nicht gefunden.
24Und es geschah nach ungefähr (etwa) drei Monaten, dass Juda Folgendes berichtet (erzählt) wurde: Deine Schwiegertochter hat Hurerei (Unzucht) getrieben und {Siehe!} ist sogar (auch) schwanger von der Hurerei! Und es sagte Juda: Führt sie hinaus, damit (dass) sie verbrannt wird (sie soll verbrannt werden)!
25{Und} Sie wurde gerade hinausgeführt (Als sie hinausgeführt wurde...) und sie schickte (ließ schicken) ihrem Schwiegervater Folgendes: Von dem Mann, dem diese Dinge gehören, bin ich schwanger geworden. Untersuche (prüfe, betrachte) doch bitte, wem dieser Siegelring und diese Schnur (Schnüre) und dieser Stab gehören!
26Und Juda betrachtete (prüfte, untersuchte) die Sachen und sagte: Sie ist im Recht mir gegenüber (gerechter als ich), weil (insofern als, in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass) ich sie nicht an meinen Sohn Schela gegeben habe. Und er schlief nicht (hatte keinen Geschlechtsverkehr) mehr mit ihr.
27Und es geschah (begab sich, war) zu der Zeit ihres Gebärens (ihrer Entbindung): {Und} Siehe, da waren Zwillinge in ihrem Mutterleib (Bauch).
28Und es geschah (begab sich, war), als (während) sie gebar, dass einer die Hand herausstreckte (gab). Und es nahm (ergriff, griff zu) die Hebamme die Hand und band einen roten Faden um (auf) seine Hand (sein Handgelenk), mit den Worten (und sagte): Dieser (er) ist zuerst herausgekommen.
29Und es geschah (begab sich, war), als er gerade seine Hand zurückzog, {und} siehe, da kam sein Bruder heraus. Und sie sagte: Warum hast du für dich (zu deinem Vorteil) einen Durchbruch gemacht (Riss gerissen)? Und man (Juda) nannte seinen Namen Perez.
30Und danach kam sein Bruder heraus, um dessen Hand (Handgelenk) der rote Faden war. Und man (Juda) nannte seinen Namen Serach.

1Y ACONTECIÓ en aquel tiempo, que Judá descendió de con sus hermanos, y fuése á un varón Adullamita, que se llamaba Hira.
2Y vió allí Judá la hija de un hombre Cananeo, el cual se llamaba Súa; y tomóla, y entró á ella:
3La cual concibió, y parió un hijo; y llamó su nombre Er.
4Y concibió otra vez, y parió un hijo, y llamó su nombre Onán.
5Y volvió á concebir, y parió un hijo, y llamó su nombre Sela. Y estaba en Chezib cuando lo parió.
6Y Judá tomó mujer para su primogénito Er, la cual se llamaba Thamar.
7Y Er, el primogénito de Judá, fué malo á los ojos de Jehová, y quitóle Jehová la vida.
8Entonces Judá dijo á Onán: Entra á la mujer de tu hermano, y despósate con ella, y suscita simiente á tu hermano.
9Y sabiendo Onán que la simiente no había de ser suya, sucedía que cuando entraba á la mujer de su hermano vertía en tierra, por no dar simiente á su hermano.
10Y desagradó en ojos de Jehová lo que hacía, y también quitó á él la vida.
11Y Judá dijo á Thamar su nuera: Estáte viuda en casa de tu padre, hasta que crezca Sela mi hijo; porque dijo: Que quizá no muera él también como sus hermanos. Y fuése Thamar, y estúvose en casa de su padre.
12Y pasaron muchos días, y murió la hija de Súa, mujer de Judá; y Judá se consoló, y subía á los trasquiladores de sus ovejas á Timnath, él y su amigo Hira el Adullamita.
13Y fué dado aviso á Thamar, diciendo: He aquí tu suegro sube á Timnath á trasquilar sus ovejas.
14Entonces quitó ella de sobre sí los vestidos de su viudez, y cubrióse con un velo, y arrebozóse, y se puso á la puerta de las aguas que están junto al camino de Timnath; porque veía que había crecido Sela, y ella no era dada á él por mujer.
15Y vióla Judá, y túvola por ramera, porque había ella cubierto su rostro.
16Y apartóse del camino hacia ella, y díjole: Ea, pues, ahora entraré á ti; porque no sabía que era su nuera; y ella dijo: ¿Qué me has de dar, si entrares á mí?
17El respondió: Yo te enviaré del ganado un cabrito de las cabras. Y ella dijo: Hasme de dar prenda hasta que lo envíes.
18Entonces él dijo: ¿Qué prenda te daré? Ella respondió: Tu anillo, y tu manto, y tu bordón que tienes en tu mano. Y él se los dió, y entró á ella, la cual concibió de él.
19Y levantóse, y fuése: y quitóse el velo de sobre sí, y vistióse las ropas de su viudez.
20Y Judá envió el cabrito de las cabras por mano de su amigo el Adullamita, para que tomase la prenda de mano de la mujer; mas no la halló.
21Y preguntó á los hombres de aquel lugar, diciendo: ¿Dónde está la ramera de las aguas junto al camino? Y ellos le dijeron: No ha estado aquí ramera.
22Entonces él se volvió á Judá, y dijo: No la he hallado; y también los hombres del lugar dijeron: Aquí no ha estado ramera.
23Y Judá dijo: Tómeselo para sí, porque no seamos menospreciados: he aquí yo he enviado este cabrito, y tú no la hallaste.
24Y acaeció que al cabo de unos tres meses fué dado aviso á Judá, diciendo: Thamar tu nuera ha fornicado, y aun cierto está preñada de las fornicaciones. Y Judá dijo: Sacadla, y sea quemada.
25Y ella, cuando la sacaban, envió á decir á su suegro: Del varón cuyas son estas cosas, estoy preñada: y dijo más: Mira ahora cúyas son estas cosas, el anillo, y el manto, y el bordón.
26Entonces Judá los reconoció, y dijo: Más justa es que yo, por cuanto no la he dado á Sela mi hijo. Y nunca más la conoció.
27Y aconteció que al tiempo del parir, he aquí había dos en su vientre.
28Y sucedió, cuando paría, que sacó la mano el uno, y la partera tomó y ató á su mano un hilo de grana, diciendo: Este salió primero.
29Empero fué que tornando él á meter la mano, he aquí su hermano salió; y ella dijo: ¿Por qué has hecho sobre ti rotura? Y llamó su nombre Phares.
30Y después salió su hermano, el que tenía en su mano el hilo de grana, y llamó su nombre Zara.

1And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
3And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
4And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
5And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
12And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
14And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
17And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
18And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
19And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
21Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
22And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
23And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

1At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.
3She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.
4She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.
5She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
6Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight. So the LORD killed him.
8Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
9Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.
10The thing which he did was evil in the LORD’s sight, and he killed him also.
11Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.
12After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.
13Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
14She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.
15When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”
18He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
19She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.
21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”
22He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”
23Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”
24About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”
25When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”
26Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.
27In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.
28When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”
29As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.
30Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
