Estas fueron las generaciones de Jacob. José, siendo de edad de diez y siete años apacentaba las ovejas con sus hermanos; y el joven estaba con los hijos de Bilha, y con los hijos de Zilpa, mujeres de su padre: y noticiaba José á su padre la mala fama de ellos.

Respondieron sus hermanos: Pues qué, ¿has de ser tú nuestro rey?, ¿o hemos de estar sujetos nosotros a tu dominio? Así, pues, la materia de estos sueños y coloquios, fue fomento de la envidia y del odio.

A lo que respondió José: Ando en busca de mis hermanos, muéstrame dónde pastan los ganados.

Le dijo aquél hombre: Se apartaron de este lugar, y les oí decir: Pasemos a Dotaín. Con esto se marchó José en busca de sus hermanos, y los halló en Dotaín.
Y aquel hombre respondió: Ya se han ido de aquí; y yo les oí decir: Vamos á Dothán. Entonces José fué tras de sus hermanos, y hallólos en Dothán.
And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

Los cuales luego que le vieron a lo lejos, antes que se acercase a ellos, trataron de matarle.

Oyendo esto Rubén, se esforzaba en librarle de sus manos, y decía:
Y como Rubén oyó esto, librólo de sus manos, y dijo: No lo matemos.

Apenas, pues, hubo llegado José a sus hermanos, le desnudaron de la túnica talar y de varios colores.

Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

Y rasgándose los vestidos, se vistió de cilicio, llorando por mucho tiempo a su hijo.
