A história da família de Jacó é a seguinte: Quando José tinha dezessete anos, o trabalho dele era pastorear os rebanhos com os seus irmãos. Como era ainda muito jovem, ele acompanhava os filhos de Bila e de Zilpa, mulheres de seu pai. Quando voltava do campo, José contava ao pai as más notícias a respeito dos seus irmãos.
Estas fueron las generaciones de Jacob. José, siendo de edad de diez y siete años apacentaba las ovejas con sus hermanos; y el joven estaba con los hijos de Bilha, y con los hijos de Zilpa, mujeres de su padre: y noticiaba José á su padre la mala fama de ellos.

And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

Mas eles o viram de longe e, antes que se aproximasse, tramaram uma forma de matá-lo.

Quando Rúben ouviu o plano dos irmãos, quis livrá-lo, dizendo: “Não vamos matar o nosso irmão!”

Jacó a reconheceu e disse: “É a túnica de meu filho! Provavelmente um animal selvagem o devorou! Certamente José foi despedaçado!”

And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”
Então Jacó rasgou as suas roupas e se vestiu com pano de saco e chorou muitos dias pela morte de seu filho.
