1Als Rachel sah, daß sie dem Jakob kein Kind gebar, ward Rachel auf ihre Schwester neidisch. Sie sprach zu Jakob: "Schaff mir Kinder! Wenn nicht, dann sterbe ich."
2Da ging Jakob die Geduld gegenüber Rachel aus, und er sprach: "Bin ich an Gottes Statt, der dir die Leibesfrucht versagt?"
3Sie sprach: "Hier ist meine Magd Bilha. Wohne ihr bei, daß sie für meinen Schoß gebäre und auch ich durch sie zu Kindern komme!"
4So gab sie ihm ihre Magd Bilha zum Weib, und Jakob wohnte ihr bei.
5Bilha ward guter Hoffnung und gebar Jakob einen Sohn.
6Da sprach Rachel: "Mir hat Gott Recht verschafft; auch hat er auf meine Stimme gehört und mir einen Sohn geschenkt." Deshalb nannte sie ihn Dan.
7Wieder ward Bilha, Rachels Magd, guter Hoffnung und gebar einen zweiten Sohn.
8Da sprach Rachel: "Gotteskämpfe habe ich gekämpft mit meiner Schwester und habe gesiegt." Und sie nannte ihn Naphtali.
9Als Lea sah, daß sie aufhörte zu gebären, nahm sie ihre Magd Zilpa und gab sie Jakob zum Weib.
10Und Leas Magd Zilpa gebar Jakob einen Sohn.
11Da sprach Lea: "Glück auf!" Und sie nannte ihn Gad.
12Und Leas Magd Zilpa gebar Jakob einen zweiten Sohn.
13Da sprach Lea: "Heil mir! Mich preisen Töchter glücklich." Und sie nannte ihn Asser.
14Ruben ging in den Tagen der Weizenernte aus und fand auf dem Felde Liebesäpfel und brachte sie seiner Mutter Lea. Da sprach Rachel zu Lea: "Gib mir doch von deines Sohnes Liebesäpfeln!"
15Sie sprach zu ihr: "lst's nicht genug, daß du meinen Mann wegnimmst, mußt du nun auch noch die Liebesäpfel meines Sohnes wegnehmen?" Da sprach Rachel: "So schlafe er diese Nacht bei dir für die Liebesäpfel deines Sohnes!"
16Als Jakob des Abends vom Felde kam, ging Lea ihm entgegen und sprach zu ihm: "Bei mir mußt du einkehren; denn ich habe dich mir für meines Sohnes Liebesäpfel ausbedungen." Und er schlief bei ihr in jener Nacht.
17Und Gott erhörte Lea, und sie empfing und gebar Jakob einen fünften Sohn.
18Da sprach Lea: "Gott hat mir meinen Lohn für das gegeben, was ich meiner Verwandten für meinen Mann gegeben habe." Und sie nannte ihn Issakar.
19Wieder ward Lea guter Hoffnung und gebar Jakob einen sechsten Sohn.
20Und Lea sprach: "Gott hat mir eine schöne Spende gespendet; diesmal bleibt mein Mann bei mir; denn sechs Söhne habe ich ihm geboren." Und sie nannte ihn Zabulon.
21Danach gebar sie eine Tochter und nannte sie Dina.
22Da erinnerte sich Gott der Rachel. Und Gott erhörte sie und öffnete ihr den Mutterschoß.
23Und sie ward guter Hoffnung und gebar einen Sohn. Da sprach sie: "Weggenommen hat Gott meine Schmach."
24Und sie nannte ihn Joseph, indem sie sagte: "Noch einen Sohn schenkte mir der Herr!"
25Als Rachel den Joseph geboren hatte, sprach Jakob zu Laban: "Entlaß mich, daß ich in meine Heimat ziehe, in mein Land!
26Gib mir meine Weiber und meine Kinder, um die ich dir gedient! Dann gehe ich. Du kennst selbst meine Dienste, mit denen ich dir gedient."
27Da sprach Laban zu ihm: "Mit Vergunst! Ich hab's erraten: Deinetwegen hat der Herr mich gesegnet."
28Und er sprach: "Nenne deine Lohnforderung an mich, damit ich sie erfülle!"
29Er sprach zu ihm: "Du weißt selbst, wie ich dir gedient habe und was aus deinem Viehstand bei mir geworden ist.
30Denn wenig ist es gewesen, was du vor mir hattest. Dann aber mehrte es sich in Fülle. So hat dich der Herr nach meiner Ankunft gesegnet. Nun aber, wann soll ich für meinen Hausstand sorgen?"
31Er sprach: "Was soll ich dir geben?" Da sprach Jakob: "Gar nichts sollst du mir geben. Gewährst du mir folgendes, dann will ich aufs neue deine Schafe sorgsam weiden.
32Ich gehe heute alle deine Schafe durch. Entferne daraus jegliches gesprenkelte und gescheckte Stück! Dann ist jedes Schwarze bei den Lämmern und alles Scheckige und Gesprenkelte bei den Ziegen mein Lohn.
33Dann zeugt meine Ehrlichkeit in Zukunft für mich vor dir, kommst du, mich zu belohnen. Was nicht gesprenkelt und nicht scheckig bei den Ziegen und was nicht schwarz bei Lämmern ist, gelte bei mir als gestohlen!"
34Und Laban sprach: "Es sei, wie du gesagt!"
35So sonderte er am selben Tage die gestreiften und scheckigen Böcke ab, alle gesprenkelten und scheckigen Ziegen, alles, woran Weiß war, und alles Schwarze bei den Lämmern und übergab es seinen Söhnen.
36Dann ließ er einen Zwischenraum von drei Tagereisen zwischen sich und Jakob; Jakob aber weidete Labans übriges Vieh.
37Da holte Jakob frische Stäbe von Pappeln, Mandelbäumen und Platanen und schälte daran weiße Streifen heraus, das Weiße an den Stäben bloßlegend.
38Dann stellte er die geschälten Stäbe in die Tränkrinnen, in die Wasserrinnen, wohin die Tiere zur Tränke kamen, gerade vor die Tiere hin. Sie waren aber in Brunst, als sie zur Tränke kamen.
39So begatteten sich die Tiere vor den Stäben. Dann warfen die Tiere gestreifte, gesprenkelte und scheckige Junge.
40Die Lämmer aber sonderte Jakob ab. So machte er die besten Tiere in Labans Herden zu gestreiften und ganz schwarzen Stücken und legte sich besondere Herden an, die er nicht zu Labans Herden tat.
41Sooft fortan die Brunstzeit der kräftigen Tiere kam, legte Jakob die Stäbe den Tieren vor Augen in die Rinnen, auf daß sie sich vor den Stäben begatteten.
42Waren aber die Tiere schwächlich, dann legte er sie nicht hin. So fielen die schwächlichen dem Laban zu, die kräftigen Jakob.
43So ward der Mann ohne Maßen reich und kam zu viel Vieh, zu Mägden und Knechten, Kamelen und Eseln.

1Y VIENDO Rachêl que no daba hijos á Jacob, tuvo envidia de su hermana, y decía á Jacob: Dame hijos, ó si no, me muero.
2Y Jacob se enojaba contra Rachêl, y decía: ¿Soy yo en lugar de Dios, que te impidió el fruto de tu vientre?
3Y ella dijo: He aquí mi sierva Bilha; entra á ella, y parirá sobre mis rodillas, y yo también tendré hijos de ella.
4Así le dió á Bilha su sierva por mujer; y Jacob entró á ella.
5Y concibió Bilha, y parió á Jacob un hijo.
6Y dijo Rachêl: Juzgóme Dios, y también oyó mi voz, y dióme un hijo. Por tanto llamó su nombre Dan.
7Y concibió otra vez Bilha, la sierva de Rachêl, y parió el hijo segundo á Jacob.
8Y dijo Rachêl: Con luchas de Dios he contendido con mi hermana, y he vencido. Y llamó su nombre Nephtalí.
9Y viendo Lea que había dejado de parir, tomó á Zilpa su sierva, y dióla á Jacob por mujer.
10Y Zilpa, sierva de Lea, parió á Jacob un hijo.
11Y dijo Lea: Vino la ventura. Y llamó su nombre Gad.
12Y Zilpa, la sierva de Lea, parió otro hijo á Jacob.
13Y dijo Lea: Para dicha mía; porque las mujeres me dirán dichosa: y llamó su nombre Aser.
14Y fué Rubén en tiempo de la siega de los trigos, y halló mandrágoras en el campo, y trájolas á Lea su madre: y dijo Rachêl á Lea: Ruégote que me des de las mandrágoras de tu hijo.
15Y ella respondió: ¿Es poco que hayas tomado mi marido, sino que también te has de llevar las mandrágoras de mi hijo? y dijo Rachêl: Pues dormirá contigo esta noche por las mandrágoras de tu hijo.
16Y cuando Jacob volvía del campo á la tarde, salió Lea á él, y le dijo: A mí has de entrar, porque á la verdad te he alquilado por las mandrágoras de mi hijo. Y durmió con ella aquella noche.
17Y oyó Dios á Lea: y concibió, y parió á Jacob el quinto hijo.
18Y dijo Lea: Dios me ha dado mi recompensa, por cuanto dí mi sierva á mi marido: por eso llamó su nombre Issachâr.
19Y concibió Lea otra vez, y parió el sexto hijo á Jacob.
20Y dijo Lea: Dios me ha dado una buena dote: ahora morará conmigo mi marido, porque le he parido seis hijos: y llamó su nombre Zabulón.
21Y después parió una hija, y llamó su nombre Dina.
22Y acordóse Dios de Rachêl, y oyóla Dios, y abrió su matriz.
23Y concibió, y parió un hijo: y dijo: Quitado ha Dios mi afrenta:
24Y llamó su nombre José, diciendo: Añádame Jehová otro hijo.
25Y aconteció, cuando Rachêl hubo parido á José, que Jacob dijo á Labán: Envíame, é iré á mi lugar, y á mi tierra.
26Dame mis mujeres y mis hijos, por las cuales he servido contigo, y déjame ir; pues tú sabes los servicios que te he hecho.
27Y Labán le respondió: Halle yo ahora gracia en tus ojos, y quédate; experimentado he que Jehová me ha bendecido por tu causa.
28Y dijo: Señálame tu salario, que yo lo daré.
29Y él respondió: Tú sabes cómo te he servido, y cómo ha estado tu ganado conmigo;
30Porque poco tenías antes de mi venida, y ha crecido en gran número; y Jehová te ha bendecido con mi llegada: y ahora ¿cuándo tengo de hacer yo también por mi propia casa?
31Y él dijo: ¿Qué te daré? Y respondió Jacob: No me des nada: si hicieres por mí esto, volveré á apacentar tus ovejas.
32Yo pasaré hoy por todas tus ovejas, poniendo aparte todas las reses manchadas y de color vario, y todas las reses de color oscuro entre las ovejas, y las manchadas y de color vario entre las cabras; y esto será mi salario.
33Así responderá por mí mi justicia mañana, cuando me viniere mi salario delante de ti: toda la que no fuere pintada ni manchada en las cabras y de color oscuro en las ovejas mías, se me ha de tener por de hurto.
34Y dijo Labán: Mira, ojalá fuese como tú dices.
35Y apartó aquel día los machos de cabrío rayados y manchados; y todas las cabras manchadas y de color vario, y toda res que tenía en sí algo de blanco, y todas las de color oscuro entre las ovejas, y púsolas en manos de sus hijos;
36Y puso tres días de camino entre sí y Jacob: y Jacob apacentaba las otras ovejas de Labán.
37Y tomóse Jacob varas de álamo verdes, y de avellano, y de castaño, y descortezó en ellas mondaduras blancas, descubriendo así lo blanco de las varas.
38Y puso las varas que había mondado en las pilas, delante del ganado, en los abrevaderos del agua donde venían á beber las ovejas, las cuales se recalentaban viniendo á beber.
39Y concebían las ovejas delante de las varas, y parían borregos listados, pintados y salpicados de diversos colores.
40Y apartaba Jacob los corderos, y poníalos con su rebaño, los listados, y todo lo que era oscuro en el hato de Labán. Y ponía su hato aparte, y no lo ponía con las ovejas de Labán.
41Y sucedía que cuantas veces se recalentaban las tempranas, Jacob ponía las varas delante de las ovejas en las pilas, para que concibiesen á la vista de las varas.
42Y cuando venían las ovejas tardías, no las ponía: así eran las tardías para Labán, y las tempranas para Jacob.
43Y acreció el varón muy mucho, y tuvo muchas ovejas, y siervas y siervos, y camellos y asnos.

1And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
2And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
3And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.
4And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
5And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
6And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
7And Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.
8And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.
9When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.
11And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.
12And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a second son.
13And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
14And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.
15And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
16And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.
19And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
20And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.
21And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
22And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
24And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
25And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
26Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
27And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
28And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
29And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
30For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
31And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
32I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
33So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
34And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
35And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
40And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban’s cattle.
41And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
42But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.

1When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I will die.”
2Jacob’s anger burned against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in God’s place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
3She said, “Behold, my maid Bilhah. Go in to her, that she may bear on my knees, and I also may obtain children by her.”
4She gave him Bilhah her servant as wife, and Jacob went in to her.
5Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son.
6Rachel said, “God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.
7Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son.
8Rachel said, “I have wrestled with my sister with mighty wrestlings, and have prevailed.” She named him Naphtali.

15Leah said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes, also?” Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”
16Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, “You must come in to me; for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” He lay with her that night.
17God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.
18Leah said, “God has given me my hire, because I gave my servant to my husband.” She named him Issachar.
19Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
20Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good dowry. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons.” She named him Zebulun.
21Afterwards, she bore a daughter, and named her Dinah.
22God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb.
23She conceived, bore a son, and said, “God has taken away my reproach.”
24She named him Joseph, saying, “May the LORD add another son to me.”
25When Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.
26Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service with which I have served you.”
27Laban said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, stay here, for I have divined that the LORD has blessed me for your sake.”
28He said, “Appoint me your wages, and I will give it.”
29Jacob said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your livestock have fared with me.
30For it was little which you had before I came, and it has increased to a multitude. The LORD has blessed you wherever I turned. Now when will I provide for my own house also?”
31Laban said, “What shall I give you?” Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it.
32I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted one, and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. This will be my hire.
33So my righteousness will answer for me hereafter, when you come concerning my hire that is before you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and black among the sheep, that might be with me, will be considered stolen.”
34Laban said, “Behold, let it be according to your word.”
35That day, he removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36He set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37Jacob took to himself rods of fresh poplar, almond, and plane tree, peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38He set the rods which he had peeled opposite the flocks in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. They conceived when they came to drink.
39The flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks produced streaked, speckled, and spotted.
40Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the black in Laban’s flock. He put his own droves apart, and didn’t put them into Laban’s flock.
41Whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, Jacob laid the rods in front of the eyes of the flock in the watering troughs, that they might conceive among the rods;
42but when the flock were feeble, he didn’t put them in. So the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43The man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
