Los niños crecieron. Esaú se hizo hábil cazador y le gustaba el campo, mientras que Jacob era muy tranquilo y prefería quedarse en la casa.
Y crecieron los niños, y Esaú fué diestro en la caza, hombre del campo: Jacob empero era varón quieto, que habitaba en tiendas.
And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

Esaú era el favorito de Isaac, porque le daba de comer de lo que cazaba; pero Jacob era el favorito de Rebeca.
Y amó Isaac á Esaú, porque comía de su caza; mas Rebeca amaba á Jacob.
And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Un día Jacob estaba haciendo un guiso cuando Esaú llegó del campo muy cansado
Y guisó Jacob un potaje; y volviendo Esaú del campo cansado,
And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
y le dijo: ―Hombre, ¡estoy muerto de hambre! ¡Por favor, dame un poco de ese guiso rojo! (Por eso, a Esaú también se le conoció con el nombre de Edom, que significa rojo).
Dijo á Jacob: Ruégote que me des á comer de eso bermejo, pues estoy muy cansado. Por tanto fué llamado su nombre Edom.
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

―Muy bien, pero dame en cambio tu derecho de primogenitura —respondió Jacob.

―¿De qué me sirve la primogenitura si me muero de hambre? —replicó Esaú.
Entonces dijo Esaú: He aquí yo me voy á morir; ¿para qué, pues, me servirá la primogenitura?
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?”
―Entonces prométeme bajo juramento que me cedes tu derecho de primogenitura —insistió Jacob. Esaú hizo el juramento y vendió así sus derechos de hijo mayor al hermano menor.
Y dijo Jacob: Júramelo en este día. Y él le juró, y vendió á Jacob su primogenitura.
And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob.
Entonces Jacob le dio pan y el guiso de lentejas. Después de comer y de beber, Esaú se levantó y se fue. Así demostró que no le importaba para nada su derecho de hijo mayor.
Entonces Jacob dió á Esaú pan y del guisado de las lentejas; y él comió y bebió, y levantóse, y fuése. Así menospreció Esaú la primogenitura.
