1Sarai, Abrams Frau, hatte ihm keine Kinder geboren; sie hatte aber eine ägyptische Leibmagd namens Hagar.
2Da sagte Sarai zu Abram: »Du siehst, daß der HERR mir Kindersegen versagt hat. So gehe doch ein zu meiner Leibmagd: vielleicht komme ich durch sie zu Kindern.« Als Abram auf diesen Vorschlag seiner Frau einging,
3nahm Sarai, Abrams Frau, ihre ägyptische Leibmagd Hagar und gab sie ihrem Manne Abram zum Weibe. – Abram hatte damals aber zehn Jahre lang im Lande Kanaan gewohnt. –
4Abram ging dann zu Hagar ein, und sie wurde guter Hoffnung; als sie aber merkte, daß sie Mutter werden würde, sah sie ihre Herrin geringschätzig an.
5Da sagte Sarai zu Abram: »Die Kränkung, die mir zugefügt wird, ist deine Schuld! Ich selbst habe dir meine Leibmagd in die Arme gegeben; jetzt aber, da sie fühlt, daß sie Mutter werden wird, sieht sie mich geringschätzig an: der HERR sei Richter zwischen mir und dir!«
6Da sagte Abram zu Sarai: »Deine Leibmagd steht ja doch unter deiner Gewalt: verfahre mit ihr, wie es dich gut dünkt!« Als nun Sarai sie hart behandelte, entfloh sie ihr.
7Da fand der Engel des HERRN sie an einer Wasserquelle in der Wüste, an der Quelle auf dem Wege nach Sur,
8und fragte sie: »Hagar, Leibmagd der Sarai, woher kommst du, und wohin willst du?« Sie antwortete: »Ich bin auf der Flucht vor meiner Herrin Sarai.«
9Da sagte der Engel des HERRN zu ihr: »Kehre zu deiner Herrin zurück und unterwirf dich ihrer Gewalt.«
10Dann fuhr der Engel des HERRN fort: »Ich will deine Nachkommenschaft überaus zahlreich werden lassen, so daß man sie vor Menge nicht soll zählen können.«
11Weiter sagte der Engel des HERRN zu ihr: »Du bist jetzt guter Hoffnung und wirst Mutter eines Sohnes werden, den du Ismael nennen sollst; denn der HERR hat auf deinen Notschrei gehört.
12Der wird ein Mensch wie ein Wildesel sein: seine Hand gegen alle und die Hand aller gegen ihn, und allen seinen Brüdern wird er trotzig gegenüberstehen.«
13Da nannte sie den Namen des HERRN, der zu ihr geredet hatte: »Du bist der Gott des Schauens; denn«, sagte sie, »ich habe wirklich hier den geschaut, der nach mir geschaut hat.«
14Darum hat man den Brunnen ›Brunnen des Lebendigen, der nach mir schaut‹ genannt; er liegt bekanntlich zwischen Kades und Bered.
15Hagar gebar dann dem Abram einen Sohn, und Abram gab seinem Sohne, den Hagar ihm geboren hatte, den Namen Ismael.
16Abram war aber sechsundachtzig Jahre alt, als Hagar ihm den Ismael gebar.

1Y SARAI, mujer de Abram, no le paría: y ella tenía una sierva egipcia, que se llamaba Agar.
2Dijo, pues, Sarai á Abram: Ya ves que Jehová me ha hecho estéril: ruégote que entres á mi sierva; quizá tendré hijos de ella. Y atendió Abram al dicho de Sarai.
3Y Sarai, mujer de Abram, tomó á Agar su sierva egipcia, al cabo de diez años que había habitado Abram en la tierra de Canaán, y dióla á Abram su marido por mujer.
4Y él cohabitó con Agar, la cual concibió: y cuando vió que había concebido, miraba con desprecio á su señora.
5Entonces Sarai dijo á Abram: Mi afrenta sea sobre ti: yo puse mi sierva en tu seno, y viéndose embarazada, me mira con desprecio; juzgue Jehová entre mí y ti.
6Y respondió Abram á Sarai: He ahí tu sierva en tu mano, haz con ella lo que bien te pareciere. Y como Sarai la afligiese, huyóse de su presencia.
7Y hallóla el ángel de Jehová junto á una fuente de agua en el desierto, junto á la fuente que está en el camino del Sur.
8Y le dijo: Agar, sierva de Sarai, ¿de dónde vienes tú, y á dónde vas? Y ella respondió: Huyo de delante de Sarai, mi señora.
9Y díjole el ángel de Jehová: Vuélvete á tu señora, y ponte sumisa bajo de su mano.
10Díjole también el ángel de Jehová: Multiplicaré tanto tu linaje, que no será contado á causa de la muchedumbre.
11Díjole aún el ángel de Jehová: He aquí que has concebido, y parirás un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Ismael, porque oído ha Jehová tu aflicción.
12Y él será hombre fiero; su mano contra todos, y las manos de todos contra él, y delante de todos sus hermanos habitará.
13Entonces llamó el nombre de Jehová que con ella hablaba: Tú eres el Dios de la vista; porque dijo: ¿No he visto también aquí al que me ve?
14Por lo cual llamó al pozo, Pozo del Viviente que me ve. He aquí está entre Cades y Bered.
15Y parió Agar á Abram un hijo, y llamó Abram el nombre de su hijo que le parió Agar, Ismael.
16Y era Abram de edad de ochenta y seis años, cuando parió Agar á Ismael.

1Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
6But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
14Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
World English Bible
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May the LORD judge between me and you.”
6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7The LORD’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.
8He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”
9The LORD’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”
10The LORD’s angel said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude.”
11The LORD’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard your affliction.
12He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposed to all of his brothers.”
13She called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”
14Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
