1Digo además: Que mientras el heredero es niño, en nada se diferencia de un siervo, no obstante ser dueño de todo;
2sino que está bajo la potestad de los tutores y curadores, hasta el tiempo señalado por su padre.
3Así nosotros, cuando éramos todavía niños, estábamos servilmente sujetos a las primeras y más groseras instrucciones que se dieron al mundo.
4Mas cumplido que fue el tiempo, envió Dios a su Hijo, formado de una mujer, y sujeto a la ley,
5para redimir a los que estaban debajo de la ley y a fin de que recibiésemos la adopción de hijos.
6Y por cuanto vosotros sois hijos, envió Dios a vuestros corazones el Espíritu de su Hijo, el cual nos hace clamar: ¡Abba!, esto es: ¡Padre mío!
7Y así ninguno de vosotros es ya siervo, sino hijo. Y siendo hijo, es también heredero de Dios por Cristo .
8Verdad es que cuando no conocíais a Dios, servíais a los que realmente no son dioses.
9Pero ahora, habiendo conocido a Dios, o por mejor decir, habiendo sido de Dios amados y conocidos, ¿cómo tornáis otra vez a esas observancias legales, que son sin vigor ni suficiencia, queriendo sujetaros nuevamente a ellas?
10Observáis todavía los ritos de los días, y meses, y tiempos, y años.
11Me tomé de vosotros no hayan sido inútiles entre vosotros mis trabajos.
12Sed como yo, ya que yo he sido como vosotros, ¡oh hermanos míos!; os lo ruego encarecidamente. A mí en nada me habéis agraviado;
13al contrario, bien sabéis que cuando hace tiempo os prediqué la buena nueva, lo hice entre las persecuciones y aflicciones de la carne, y en tal estado de mi carne o de humillación mía, que os era materia de tentación,
14no me despreciasteis, ni desechasteis; antes bien me recibisteis como a un ángel de Dios, como al mismo Jesucristo.
15¿Dónde está, pues, ahora aquella felicidad en que os gozabais? Porque yo puedo testificar de vosotros que entonces estabais prontos, si posible fuera, a sacaros los ojos, para dármelos a mí.
16Conque ¿por deciros la verdad me he hecho enemigo vuestro?
17Esos falsos apóstoles procuran estrecharse con vosotros; mas no es con buen fin, sino que pretenden separaros de nosotros, para que los sigáis a ellos.
18Sed, pues, celosos amantes del bien con un fin recto, en todo tiempo, y no sólo cuando me hallo yo presente entre vosotros.
19Hijitos míos, por quienes segunda vez padezco dolores de parto hasta formar enteramente a Cristo en vosotros,
20quisiera estar ahora con vosotros, y diversificar mi voz según vuestras necesidades: porque me tenéis perplejo sobre el modo con que debo hablaros.
21Decidme, os ruego, los que queréis estar sujetos a la ley antigua, ¿no habéis leído lo que dice la ley?
22Porque escrito está que Abrahán tuvo dos hijos, uno de la esclava Agar, y otro de la libre, que era Sara.
23Mas el de la esclava nació según la carne, o naturalmente; al contrario, el hijo de la libre nació milagrosamente y en virtud de la promesa.
24Todo lo cual fue dicho por alegoría, porque estas dos madres son las dos leyes o testamentos. La una dada en el monte Sinaí , que engendra esclavos, la cual es simbolizada en Agar;
25porque el Sinaí es un monte de la Arabia que corresponde a la Jerusalén de aquí abajo, la cual es esclava con sus hijos.
26Mas aquella Jerusalén de arriba, figurada en Sara, es libre, la cual es madre de todos nosotros.
27Porque escrito está: Alégrate estéril, que no pares, prorrumpe en gritos de júbilo, tú que no eres fecunda; porque son muchos más los hijos de la que ya estaba abandonada por estéril, que los de la que tiene marido.
28Nosotros, pues, hermanos, somos los hijos de la promesa, figurados en Isaac.
29Mas así como entonces el que había nacido según la carne perseguía al nacido según el espíritu, así sucede también ahora.
30Pero ¿qué dice la Escritura?: Echa fuera a la esclava y a su hijo; que no ha de ser heredero el hijo de la esclava con el hijo de la libre.
31Según esto, hermanos, nosotros no somos hijos de la esclava, sino de la libre; y Cristo es el que nos ha adquirido esta libertad.

1TAMBIÉN digo: Entre tanto que el heredero es niño, en nada difiere del siervo, aunque es señor de todo;
2Mas está debajo de tutores y curadores hasta el tiempo señalado por el padre.
3Así también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, éramos siervos bajo los rudimentos del mundo.
4Mas venido el cumplimiento del tiempo, Dios envió su Hijo, hecho de mujer, hecho súbdito á la ley,
5Para que redimiese á los que estaban debajo de la ley, á fin de que recibiésemos la adopción de hijos.
6Y por cuanto sois hijos, Dios envió el Espíritu de su Hijo en vuestros corazones, el cual clama: Abba, Padre.
7Así que ya no eres más siervo, sino hijo; y si hijo, también heredero de Dios por Cristo.
8Antes, en otro tiempo, no conociendo á Dios, servíais á los que por naturaleza no son dioses:
9Mas ahora, habiendo conocido á Dios, ó más bien, siendo conocidos de Dios, ¿cómo os volvéis de nuevo á los flacos y pobres rudimentos, en los cuales queréis volver á servir?
10Guardáis los días, y los meses, y los tiempos, y los años.
11Temo de vosotros, que no haya trabajado en vano en vosotros.
12Hermanos, os ruego, sed como yo, porque yo soy como vosotros: ningún agravio me habéis hecho.
13Que vosotros sabéis que por flaqueza de carne os anuncié el evangelio al principio:
14Y no desechasteis ni menospreciasteis mi tentación que estaba en mi carne: antes me recibisteis como á un ángel de Dios, como á Cristo Jesús.
15¿Dónde está pues vuestra bienaventuranza? porque yo os doy testimonio que si se pudiera hacer, os hubierais sacado vuestros ojos para dármelos.
16¿Heme pues hecho vuestro enemigo, diciéndoos la verdad?
17Tienen celos de vosotros, pero no bien: antes os quieren echar fuera para que vosotros los celéis á ellos.
18Bueno es ser celosos en bien siempre; y no solamente cuando estoy presente con vosotros.
19Hijitos míos, que vuelvo otra vez á estar de parto de vosotros, hasta que Cristo sea formado en vosotros;
20Querría cierto estar ahora con vosotros, y mudar mi voz; porque estoy perplejo en cuanto á vosotros.
21Decidme, los que queréis estar debajo de la ley, ¿no habéis oído la ley?
22Porque escrito está que Abraham tuvo dos hijos; uno de la sierva, el otro de la libre.
23Mas el de la sierva nació según la carne; pero el de la libre nació por la promesa.
24Las cuales cosas son dichas por alegoría: porque estas mujeres son los dos pactos; el uno ciertamente del monte Sinaí, el cual engendró para servidumbre, que es Agar.
25Porque Agar ó Sinaí es un monte de Arabia, el cual es conjunto á la que ahora es Jerusalem, la cual sirve con sus hijos.
26Mas la Jerusalem de arriba libre es; la cual es la madre de todos nosotros.
27Porque está escrito: Alégrate, estéril, que no pares: prorrumpe y clama, la que no estás de parto; porque más son los hijos de la dejada, que de la que tiene marido.
28Así que, hermanos, nosotros como Isaac somos hijos de la promesa.
29Empero como entonces el que era engendrado según la carne, perseguía al que había nacido según el Espíritu, así también ahora.
30Mas ¿qué dice la Escritura? Echa fuera á la sierva y á su hijo; porque no será heredero el hijo de la sierva con el hijo de la libre.
31De manera, hermanos, que no somos hijos de la sierva, mas de la libre.

1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
12Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
13Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
17They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
18But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
20I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
21Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

1But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all,
2but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.
3So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.
4But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,
5that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children.
6And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”
7So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.
9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?
10You observe days, months, seasons, and years.
11I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.
12I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,
13but you know that because of weakness in the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.
14That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn’t despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
16So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
17They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.
18But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.
19My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you—
20but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
21Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don’t you listen to the law?
22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant, and one by the free woman.
23However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.
24These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
25For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.
26But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break out and shout, you who don’t travail. For the desolate women have more children than her who has a husband.”
28Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
29But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
30However, what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the servant and her son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”
31So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant, but of the free woman.
