1Et ceux qui opprimaient Juda et Benjamin ouïrent que les enfants de la captivité bâtissaient un temple au Seigneur Dieu d'Israël.
2Et ils s'approchèrent de Zorobabel et des chefs de famille, et ils leur dirent : Nous bâtirons avec vous, parce que, comme vous, nous cherchons notre Dieu, et que nous lui sacrifions, depuis le temps d'Asaradan, roi des Assyriens, qui nous a transportés ici.
3Et Zorobabel, et Josué, et le reste des chefs de famille d'Israël, leur répondirent : Ce n'est pas avec vous que nous bâtirons un temple à notre Dieu ; car, nous seuls, tous ensemble, nous bâtirons au Seigneur notre Dieu, comme nous l'a prescrit Cyrus, roi des Perses.
4Et le peuple de la terre affaiblissait les mains de Juda, et il l'empêchait de bâtir.
5Et des gens, salariés pour nuire aux fils de Juda, complotèrent pour ruiner leurs desseins, tant que vécut Cyrus, jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi des Perses.
6Au commencement du règne d'Assuérus, ils écrivirent une lettre contre ceux qui habitaient Jérusalem et Juda.
7Et, durant les jours d'Arthasastha, Tabéel écrivit une lettre bienveillante à Mithradate et aux autres serviteurs ; le collecteur des impôts écrivit à Arthasastha, roi des Perses, une lettre en syriaque avec la traduction.
8Rheum le chancelier, et Samsa le scribe, écrivirent aussi une lettre contre Jérusalem au roi Arthasastha.
9Voici ce que jugent Rhéum le chancelier, Samsa le scribe, et le reste de ceux qui, avec nous, sont tes serviteurs : les Dinéens, les Apharsathachéens, les Tharphaléens, les Apharséens, les Arechyéens, les Babyloniens, les Susanachéens, les Davéens,
10Et les autres nations que le grand et vénérable Assenaphar a transportées dans les villes de Samarie ; celles qui résident sur le territoire en deçà du fleuve.
11Suit la teneur de la lettre qu'ils envoyèrent : À Arthasastha, roi, ses serviteurs, en deçà du fleuve :
12Que le roi sache que les Juifs qui sont partis de son territoire pour cette terre sont arrivés à Jérusalem, ville rebelle et méchante, qu'ils la rebâtissent, qu'ils en ont restauré les remparts, et qu'ils les ont élevés au-dessus des fondations.
13Que le roi sache bien qu'aussitôt leur ville reconstruite et leurs murs réparés, ils cesseront d'être tes tributaires, ils ne donneront rien ; et ainsi, ils feront tort aux rois ;
14Et il ne nous est point possible de voir le roi outragé ; c'est pourquoi nous avons envoyé un message pour instruire le roi,
15Afin que l'on regarde dans le livre des archives de tes pères, où tu trouveras et tu apprendras que cette ville est une ville rebelle, qu'elle fait tort aux rois et aux royaumes, qu'il y a toujours eu chez elle des esclaves fugitifs, et que c'est pour cela qu'elle a été dépeuplée.
16Nous déclarons donc au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie, si ses remparts sont relevés, il n'y aura plus de paix pour toi.
17Et le roi envoya dire à Rhéum le chancelier, à Samsa le scribe, et à ses serviteurs qui habitaient en Samarie et en deçà du fleuve : La paix ;
18Le collecteur des impôts que vous nous avez envoyé a été appelé devant moi.
19Et j'ai fait un édit ; puis, nous avons examiné, et nous avons trouvé que cette ville de tout temps s'est soulevée contre les rois ; que la rébellion, que la désertion y résident.
20Or, il y a eu en Jérusalem des rois puissants ; ils ont maîtrisé toute la contrée au delà de l'Euphrate ; d'abondants revenus et des impôts leur ont été payés.
21Maintenant donc, faites un édit pour suspendre le travail de ces hommes ; cette ville ne sera plus rebâtie.
22Soyez attentifs à maintenir cet édit ; ne vous en relâchez point, de peur qu'un jour le mal ne s'y aggrave au détriment du roi.
23Le collecteur des impôts d'Arthasastha, roi, lut donc cette lettre devant Rhéum le chancelier, Samsa le scribe, et les autres serviteurs du roi, et ils allèrent en toute hâte à Jérusalem et en Juda avec des troupes et de la cavalerie, et ils arrêtèrent les travaux du peuple.
24Ainsi, la reconstruction du temple de Dieu fut suspendue à Jérusalem, et on ne la reprit qu'à la seconde année du règne de Darius.

1Y OYENDO los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,
2Llegáronse á Zorobabel, y á los cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos á vuestro Dios, y á él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-haddón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.
3Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa á nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos á Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.
4Mas el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los arredraban de edificar.
5Cohecharon además contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.
6Y en el reinado de Assuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalem.
7Y en días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, escribieron á Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco.
8Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalem al rey Artajerjes, como se sigue.
9Entonces Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, y los demás sus compañeros, los Dineos, y los Apharsathachêos, Thepharleos, Apharseos, los Erchûeos, los Babilonios, Susanchêos, Dieveos, y Elamitas;
10Y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnappar trasportó, é hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás de la otra parte del río, etcétera, escribieron.
11Este es el traslado de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos de la otra parte del río, etcétera.
12Sea notorio al rey, que los Judíos que subieron de ti á nosotros, vinieron á Jerusalem; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros; y compuesto los fundamentos.
13Ahora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán, y el catastro de lo reyes será menoscabado.
14Ya pues que estamos mantenidos de palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: hemos enviado por tanto, y hécholo saber al rey,
15Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial á los reyes y á las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fué destruída.
16Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y erigidos sus muros, la parte allá del río no será tuya.
17El rey envió esta respuesta á Rehum canciller, y á Simsai secretario, y á los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y á los demás de la parte allá del río: Paz, etc.
18La carta que nos enviasteis claramente fué leída delante de mí.
19Y por mí fué dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición:
20Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, quienes señorearon en todo lo que está á la parte allá del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.
21Ahora pues dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.
22Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?
23Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fué leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente á Jerusalem á los Judíos, é hiciéronles cesar con poder y fuerza.
24Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
2Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
11This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

13Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.
14Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,
15that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.
16We inform the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.
17Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.
18The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.
19I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.
20There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll was paid to them.
21Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built until a decree is made by me.
22Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Then when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.
24Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
