1Als aber das Volk sah, daß Mose mit seiner Rückkehr vom Berge auf sich warten ließ, sammelte sich das Volk um Aaron und sagte zu ihm: »Auf! Mache uns einen Gott, der vor uns herziehen soll! Denn von diesem Mose, dem Mann, der uns aus dem Land Ägypten hierher geführt hat, wissen wir nicht, was aus ihm geworden ist.«
2Da antwortete ihnen Aaron: »Reißt die goldenen Ringe ab, die eure Frauen und eure Söhne und Töchter in den Ohren tragen, und bringt sie mir her!«
3Da riß das gesamte Volk sich die goldenen Ringe ab, die sie in den Ohren trugen, und brachten sie zu Aaron.
4Der nahm sie von ihnen in Empfang, bearbeitete das Gold mit dem Meißel und machte ein gegossenes Kalb daraus. Da riefen sie: »Dies ist dein Gott, Israel, der dich aus dem Land Ägypten hergeführt hat!«
5Als Aaron das sah, errichtete er einen Altar vor dem Stierbild und ließ ausrufen: »Morgen findet ein Fest statt zu Ehren des HERRN!«
6Da machten sie sich am andern Morgen früh auf, opferten Brandopfer und brachten Heilsopfer dar, und das Volk setzte sich nieder, um zu essen und zu trinken; dann standen sie auf, um sich zu belustigen.
7Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Auf! Gehe hinab! Denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten hergeführt hast, begeht eine große Sünde:
8gar schnell sind sie von dem Wege abgewichen, den ich ihnen geboten habe; sie haben sich ein gegossenes Stierbild gemacht und es angebetet, haben ihm geopfert und ausgerufen: ›Dies ist dein Gott, Israel, der dich aus dem Land Ägypten hergeführt hat!‹«
9Dann fuhr der HERR fort: »Ich habe dieses Volk beobachtet und sehe wohl: es ist ein halsstarriges Volk.
10Nun so laß mich, daß mein Zorn gegen sie entbrenne und ich sie vernichte! Dich aber will ich zu einem großen Volk machen!«
11Mose aber suchte den HERRN, seinen Gott, zu besänftigen, indem er sagte: »Warum, o HERR, soll dein Zorn gegen dein Volk entbrennen, das du mit großer Kraft und starkem Arm aus dem Land Ägypten herausgeführt hast?
12Warum sollen die Ägypter sagen: ›In böser Absicht hat er sie hinausgeführt, um sie in den Bergen umkommen zu lassen und sie vom Erdboden zu vertilgen‹? Laß ab von deiner Zornesglut und laß dir das Unheil leid sein, das du deinem Volk zugedacht hast!
13Denke an deine Knechte Abraham, Isaak und Israel, denen du bei dir selbst zugeschworen und verheißen hast: ›Ich will eure Nachkommenschaft so zahlreich machen wie die Sterne am Himmel und will dies ganze Land, von dem ich geredet habe, euren Nachkommen zu ewigem Besitz geben.‹«
14Da ließ der HERR sich das Unheil leid sein, das er seinem Volk zugedacht hatte.
15Mose aber machte sich auf den Rückweg und stieg vom Berge hinab mit den beiden Gesetzestafeln in der Hand, Tafeln, die auf ihren beiden Seiten, vorn und hinten, beschrieben waren.
16Diese Tafeln waren von Gott selbst angefertigt, und die Schrift war Gottes Schrift, in die Tafeln eingegraben.
17Als nun Josua das laute Jubelgeschrei des Volkes hörte, sagte er zu Mose: »Kriegslärm ist im Lager!«
18Der aber antwortete: »Das klingt nicht wie Geschrei von Siegern und auch nicht wie Geschrei von Besiegten: nein, lautes Singen höre ich!«
19Als er sich dann dem Lager genähert hatte und das Stierbild und die Reigentänze sah, da geriet Mose in lodernden Zorn, so daß er die Tafeln aus seinen Händen schleuderte und sie am Fuß des Berges zertrümmerte.
20Dann nahm er das Stierbild, das sie angefertigt hatten, verbrannte es im Feuer und zerstieß es zu feinem Staub, den streute er aufs Wasser und ließ es die Israeliten trinken.
21Hierauf sagte Mose zu Aaron: »Was hat dir dieses Volk getan, daß du es zu einer so großen Sünde verführt hast?«
22Aaron antwortete: »Mein Herr möge nicht in Zorn geraten! Du weißt selbst, wie das Volk zum Bösen geneigt ist.
23Sie forderten mich auf: ›Mache uns einen Gott, der vor uns herziehen soll! Denn von diesem Mose, dem Mann, der uns aus dem Land Ägypten hergeführt hat, wissen wir nicht, was aus ihm geworden ist.‹
24Da antwortete ich ihnen: ›Wer Goldschmuck hat, der reiße ihn von sich ab!‹ Sie gaben es mir dann, und ich warf es ins Feuer; da kam dieses Stierbild heraus.«
25Als nun Mose sah, daß das Volk zügellos geworden war – denn Aaron hatte ihm die Zügel schießen lassen zur Schadenfreude für ihre Feinde –,
26trat Mose in das Tor des Lagers und rief aus: »Her zu mir, wer es mit dem HERRN hält!« Da scharten sich alle Leviten um ihn.
27Zu diesen sagte er: »So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: ›Gürtet euch ein jeder sein Schwert an die Hüfte, geht im Lager hin und her von einem Tor zum andern und erschlagt ein jeder den eigenen Bruder und ein jeder seine Freunde und Verwandten!‹«
28Die Leviten kamen dem Befehl Moses nach, und so fielen an diesem Tage von dem Volk gegen dreitausend Mann.
29Da sagte Mose: »Weiht euch heute dem HERRN zu Priestern! Denn ein jeder ist sogar gegen den eigenen Sohn und gegen den eigenen Bruder schonungslos vorgegangen; darum soll euch heute Segen verliehen werden!«
30Am andern Tage aber sagte Mose zum Volk: »Ihr habt eine schwere Sünde begangen; darum will ich jetzt zum HERRN hinaufsteigen! Vielleicht kann ich euch Sühne für eure Sünde erwirken.«
31So kehrte denn Mose zum HERRN zurück und sagte: »Ach bitte! Dieses Volk hat eine schwere Sünde begangen: es hat sich einen Gott aus Gold angefertigt!
32Und nun – vergib ihnen doch ihre Sünde! Wo nicht, so streiche lieber mich aus deinem Buche aus, das du geschrieben hast!«
33Der HERR aber antwortete dem Mose: »Wer gegen mich gesündigt hat, nur den werde ich aus meinem Buche ausstreichen.
34Jetzt aber gehe hin und führe das Volk dahin, wohin ich dir geboten habe! Jedoch nur mein Engel wird vor dir hergehen; und am Tage meines Strafgerichts will ich sie für ihre Versündigung büßen lassen!«
35So suchte denn der HERR fortan das Volk heim (zur Strafe) dafür, daß sie das Stierbild hatten machen lassen, welches Aaron angefertigt hatte.

1MAS viendo el pueblo que Moisés tardaba en descender del monte, allegóse entonces á Aarón, y dijéronle: Levántate, haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque á este Moisés, aquel varón que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le haya acontecido.
2Y Aarón les dijo: Apartad los zarcillos de oro que están en las orejas de vuestras mujeres, y de vuestros hijos, y de vuestras hijas, y traédmelos.
3Entonces todo el pueblo apartó los zarcillos de oro que tenían en sus orejas, y trajéronlos á Aarón:
4El cual los tomó de las manos de ellos, y formólo con buril, é hizo de ello un becerro de fundición. Entonces dijeron: Israel, estos son tus dioses, que te sacaron de la tierra de Egipto.
5Y viendo esto Aarón, edificó un altar delante del becerro; y pregonó Aarón, y dijo: Mañana será fiesta á Jehová.
6Y el día siguiente madrugaron, y ofrecieron holocaustos, y presentaron pacíficos: y sentóse el pueblo á comer y á beber, y levantáronse á regocijarse.
7Entonces Jehová dijo á Moisés: Anda, desciende, porque tu pueblo que sacaste de tierra de Egipto se ha corrompido:
8Presto se han apartado del camino que yo les mandé, y se han hecho un becerro de fundición, y lo han adorado, y han sacrificado á él, y han dicho: Israel, estos son tus dioses, que te sacaron de la tierra de Egipto.
9Dijo más Jehová á Moisés: Yo he visto á este pueblo, que por cierto es pueblo de dura cerviz:
10Ahora pues, déjame que se encienda mi furor en ellos, y los consuma: y á ti yo te pondré sobre gran gente.
11Entonces Moisés oró á la faz de Jehová su Dios, y dijo: Oh Jehová, ¿por qué se encenderá tu furor en tu pueblo, que tú sacaste de la tierra de Egipto con gran fortaleza, y con mano fuerte?
12¿Por qué han de hablar los Egipcios, diciendo: Para mal los sacó, para matarlos en los montes, y para raerlos de sobre la haz de la tierra? Vuélvete del furor de tu ira, y arrepiéntete del mal de tu pueblo.
13Acuérdate de Abraham, de Isaac, y de Israel, tus siervos, á los cuales has jurado por ti mismo, y dícholes: Yo multiplicaré vuestra simiente como las estrellas del cielo; y daré á vuestra simiente toda esta tierra que he dicho, y la tomarán por heredad para siempre.
14Entonces Jehová se arrepintió del mal que dijo que había de hacer á su pueblo.
15Y volvióse Moisés, y descendió del monte trayendo en su mano las dos tablas del testimonio, las tablas escritas por ambos lados; de una parte y de otra estaban escritas.
16Y las tablas eran obra de Dios, y la escritura era escritura de Dios grabada sobre las tablas.
17Y oyendo Josué el clamor del pueblo que gritaba, dijo á Moisés: Alarido de pelea hay en el campo.
18Y él respondió: No es eco de algazara de fuertes, ni eco de alaridos de flacos: algazara de cantar oigo yo.
19Y aconteció, que como llegó él al campo, y vió el becerro y las danzas, enardeciósele la ira á Moisés, y arrojó las tablas de sus manos, y quebrólas al pie del monte.
20Y tomó el becerro que habían hecho, y quemólo en el fuego, y moliólo hasta reducirlo á polvo, que esparció sobre las aguas, y diólo á beber á los hijos de Israel.
21Y dijo Moisés á Aarón: ¿Qué te ha hecho este pueblo, que has traído sobre él tan gran pecado?
22Y respondió Aarón: No se enoje mi señor; tú conoces el pueblo, que es inclinado á mal.
23Porque me dijeron: Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, que á este Moisés, el varón que nos sacó de tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le ha acontecido.
24Y yo les respondí: ¿Quién tiene oro? apartadlo. Y diéronmelo, y echélo en el fuego, y salió este becerro.
25Y viendo Moisés que el pueblo estaba despojado, porque Aarón lo había despojado para vergüenza entre sus enemigos,
26Púsose Moisés á la puerta del real, y dijo: ¿Quién es de Jehová? júntese conmigo. Y juntáronse con él todos los hijos de Leví.
27Y él les dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová, el Dios de Israel: Poned cada uno su espada sobre su muslo: pasad y volved de puerta á puerta por el campo, y matad cada uno á su hermano, y á su amigo, y á su pariente.
28Y los hijos de Leví lo hicieron conforme al dicho de Moisés: y cayeron del pueblo en aquel día como tres mil hombres.
29Entonces Moisés dijo: Hoy os habéis consagrado á Jehová, porque cada uno se ha consagrado en su hijo, y en su hermano, para que dé él hoy bendición sobre vosotros.
30Y aconteció que el día siguiente dijo Moisés al pueblo: Vosotros habéis cometido un gran pecado: mas yo subiré ahora á Jehová; quizá le aplacaré acerca de vuestro pecado.
31Entonces volvió Moisés á Jehová, y dijo: Ruégote, pues este pueblo ha cometido un gran pecado, porque se hicieron dioses de oro,
32Que perdones ahora su pecado, y si no, ráeme ahora de tu libro que has escrito.
33Y Jehová respondió á Moisés: Al que pecare contra mí, á éste raeré yo de mi libro.
34Ve pues ahora, lleva á este pueblo donde te he dicho: he aquí mi ángel irá delante de ti; que en el día de mi visitación yo visitaré en ellos su pecado.
35Y Jehová hirió al pueblo, porque habían hecho el becerro que formó Aarón.

1And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
2And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
3And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
5And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
6And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
8They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
10Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
11And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
15And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
16And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
18And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
19And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
26Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
28And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
29For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
30And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
31And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
33And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

1When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”
2Aaron said to them, “Take off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me.”
3All the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.
4He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molded calf. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.”
6They rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7The LORD spoke to Moses, “Go, get down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves!
8They have turned away quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and have worshiped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”
9The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people.
10Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.”
11Moses begged the LORD his God, and said, “LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
12Why should the Egyptians talk, saying, ‘He brought them out for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath, and turn away from this evil against your people.
13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”
14So the LORD turned away from the evil which he said he would do to his people.
15Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand; tablets that were written on both their sides. They were written on one side and on the other.
16The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
17When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.”
18He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory. It is not the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.”
19As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses’ anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain.
20He took the calf which they had made, and burned it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel drink it.
21Moses said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?”
22Aaron said, “Don’t let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.
23For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’
24I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.’ So they gave it to me; and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”
25When Moses saw that the people were out of control, (for Aaron had let them lose control, causing derision among their enemies),
26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the LORD’s side, come to me!” All the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.
27He said to them, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’”
28The sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. About three thousand men fell of the people that day.
29Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, for every man was against his son and against his brother, that he may give you a blessing today.”
30On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”
31Moses returned to the LORD, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold.
32Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.”
33The LORD said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out of my book.
34Now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”
35The LORD struck the people, because of what they did with the calf, which Aaron made.
