1Por esa época, un hombre de la tribu de Leví se casó con una mujer de su misma tribu.
2Después de un tiempo, la mujer quedó embarazada y tuvo un hijo. El niño era tan hermoso, que la madre lo mantuvo escondido durante tres meses.
3Pero cuando ya no pudo esconderlo más, le hizo una pequeña cesta de papiro, la recubrió con asfalto, y puso al niño adentro; luego fue y lo dejó en medio de las cañas que crecían a la orilla del río.
4La hermana del bebé lo estuvo vigilando desde lejos, para ver qué iba a pasar con él.
5En eso vio que llegaba a bañarse al río una princesa, una de las hijas del faraón. Mientras caminaba por la orilla con sus damas de compañía, vio la pequeña cesta que estaba en medio de las cañas y envió a una de sus doncellas para que se la llevara.
6Cuando la abrió, vio al bebé que lloraba, y se sintió conmovida. ―Debe de ser un bebé de los hebreos —dijo.
7La hermana del niño se acercó y le preguntó a la princesa: ―¿Quiere que vaya y busque a una mujer hebrea para que le cuide al niño?
8―Sí, anda —respondió la princesa. La muchacha corrió hasta su casa, y regresó con su madre.
9―Lleva a este niño a tu casa y cuídamelo —le ordenó la princesa a la madre del niño—. Te pagaré bien. Ella, pues, lo llevó a su casa y lo cuidó.
10Cuando el niño creció, la madre se lo llevó a la princesa, y ella lo adoptó como hijo suyo. Lo llamó Moisés, porque lo había sacado de las aguas.
11Un día, cuando Moisés ya había crecido, salió a visitar a los hebreos y vio la terrible condición en que se encontraban. Durante esta visita vio que un egipcio golpeaba a un hebreo, ¡a un compatriota suyo!
12Moisés miró hacia todos lados para asegurarse de que nadie lo veía, mató al egipcio y lo sepultó en la arena.
13Al día siguiente volvió a salir a visitar a los hebreos, y vio que dos de ellos estaban peleando. ―¿Por qué golpeas a tu hermano de esa manera? —le dijo al que estaba golpeando al otro.
14―¿Quién te crees tú? —le contestó el hombre—. Supongo que te crees príncipe y juez. ¿Quieres matarme también como lo hiciste con el egipcio ayer? Cuando Moisés se dio cuenta de que se sabía lo que había hecho, se asustó.
15Y en efecto, cuando el faraón se enteró, ordenó que Moisés fuera arrestado y ejecutado. Pero Moisés huyó hacia la tierra de Madián. Al llegar a allá, se sentó junto a un pozo.
16Estaba allí sentado, cuando llegaron siete muchachas a sacar agua del pozo, para llenar los abrevaderos y darles de beber a las ovejas de su padre. Las siete eran hijas del sacerdote de Madián.
17Pero los pastores que estaban allí querían impedir que ellas sacaran agua. Moisés acudió en su ayuda y las libró de los pastores, y dio de beber a las ovejas.
18Cuando las muchachas volvieron a casa, su padre Reuel, también llamado Jetro, les preguntó: ―¿Cómo es que pudieron regresar hoy tan temprano?
19―Un egipcio nos defendió de los pastores —respondieron ellas—, y sacó agua y dio de beber a los rebaños.
20―Bueno, pero ¿dónde está? —les preguntó el padre—. ¿Lo dejaron allá? Invítenlo a comer.
21Moisés aceptó la invitación y acabó quedándose a vivir con ellos. Después de un tiempo, Reuel le dio por esposa a Séfora, una de sus hijas.
22Tuvieron un hijo, y Moisés le puso por nombre Guersón, porque dijo: «Soy forastero en tierra extraña».
23Pasaron muchos años, y murió el faraón. Los israelitas, sin embargo, gemían bajo su pesada carga, profundamente atribulados por la esclavitud, y lloraban amargamente delante de Dios. Dios oyó su lamento desde los cielos y
24se acordó de su pacto, de la promesa hecha a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob de hacer regresar a sus descendientes a la tierra de Canaán.
25Los miró desde lo alto y decidió ayudarlos.

1UN varón de la familia de Leví fué, y tomó por mujer una hija de Leví:
2La cual concibió, y parió un hijo: y viéndolo que era hermoso, túvole escondido tres meses.
3Pero no pudiendo ocultarle más tiempo, tomó una arquilla de juncos, y calafateóla con pez y betún, y colocó en ella al niño, y púsolo en un carrizal á la orilla del río:
4Y paróse una hermana suya á lo lejos, para ver lo que le acontecería.
5Y la hija de Faraón descendió á lavarse al río, y paseándose sus doncellas por la ribera del río, vió ella la arquilla en el carrizal, y envió una criada suya á que la tomase.
6Y como la abrió, vió al niño; y he aquí que el niño lloraba. Y teniendo compasión de él, dijo: De los niños de los Hebreos es éste.
7Entonces su hermana dijo á la hija de Faraón: ¿Iré á llamarte un ama de las Hebreas, para que te críe este niño?
8Y la hija de Faraón respondió: Ve. Entonces fué la doncella, y llamó á la madre del niño;
9A la cual dijo la hija de Faraón: Lleva este niño, y críamelo, y yo te lo pagaré. Y la mujer tomó al niño, y criólo.
10Y como creció el niño, ella lo trajo á la hija de Faraón, la cual lo prohijó, y púsole por nombre Moisés, diciendo: Porque de las aguas lo saqué.
11Y en aquellos días acaeció que, crecido ya Moisés, salió á sus hermanos, y vió sus cargas: y observó á un Egipcio que hería á uno de los Hebreos, sus hermanos.
12Y miró á todas partes, y viendo que no parecía nadie, mató al Egipcio, y escondiólo en la arena.
13Y salió al día siguiente, y viendo á dos Hebreos que reñían, dijo al que hacía la injuria: ¿Por qué hieres á tu prójimo?
14Y él respondió: ¿Quién te ha puesto á ti por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿piensas matarme como mataste al Egipcio? Entonces Moisés tuvo miedo, y dijo: Ciertamente esta cosa es descubierta.
15Y oyendo Faraón este negocio, procuró matar á Moisés: mas Moisés huyó de delante de Faraón, y habitó en la tierra de Madián; y sentóse junto á un pozo.
16Tenía el sacerdote de Madián siete hijas, las cuales vinieron á sacar agua, para llenar las pilas y dar de beber á las ovejas de su padre.
17Mas los pastores vinieron, y echáronlas: Entonces Moisés se levantó y defendiólas, y abrevó sus ovejas.
18Y volviendo ellas á Ragüel su padre, díjoles él: ¿Por qué habéis hoy venido tan presto?
19Y ellas respondieron: Un varón Egipcio nos defendió de mano de los pastores, y también nos sacó el agua, y abrevó las ovejas.
20Y dijo á sus hijas: ¿Y dónde está? ¿por qué habéis dejado ese hombre? llamadle para que coma pan.
21Y Moisés acordó en morar con aquel varón; y él dió á Moisés á su hija Séphora:
22La cual le parió un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Gersom: porque dijo: Peregrino soy en tierra ajena.
23Y aconteció que después de muchos días murió el rey de Egipto, y los hijos de Israel suspiraron á causa de la servidumbre, y clamaron: y subió á Dios el clamor de ellos con motivo de su servidumbre.
24Y oyó Dios el gemido de ellos, y acordóse de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
25Y miró Dios á los hijos de Israel, y reconociólos Dios.
King James Version
1And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
2And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.
4And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
5And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
6And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.
7Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother.
9And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
10And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
11And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?
14And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?
19And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.
20And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
21And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
22And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
23And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
World English Bible
1A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.
2The woman conceived and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
3When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.
4His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.
5Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.
6She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.
9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed him.
10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
12He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
14He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”
19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”
20He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”
21Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.
22She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
24God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25God saw the children of Israel, and God understood.
