Esta es la lista de los hijos de Jacob que lo acompañaron a Egipto con sus familias:

ESTOS son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, que entraron en Egipto con Jacob; cada uno entró con su familia.

Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

El número total de las personas que lo acompañaron fue de setenta (porque José ya estaba allá).

Y todas las almas de los que salieron del muslo de Jacob, fueron setenta. Y José estaba en Egipto.

And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Pero sus descendientes fueron muy fructíferos y se multiplicaron rápidamente, de modo que llegaron a ser un pueblo muy numeroso y fuerte. ¡Todo el país se fue llenando de israelitas!

Pasado el tiempo, subió al trono de Egipto un nuevo rey que no se sintió comprometido con los descendientes de José.

Levantóse entretanto un nuevo rey sobre Egipto, que no conocía á José; el cual dijo á su pueblo:

Ahora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, porque no se multiplique, y acontezca que viniendo guerra, él también se junte con nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros, y se vaya de la tierra.

Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

Entonces los egipcios esclavizaron a los hebreos, y les pusieron capataces muy crueles. Estos les asignaron la dura tarea de edificar las ciudades de Pitón y Ramsés, que eran las ciudades donde el rey almacenaba todas las provisiones.

Entonces pusieron sobre él comisarios de tributos que los molestasen con sus cargas; y edificaron á Faraón las ciudades de los bastimentos, Phithom y Raamses.

Pero cuanto más los oprimían los egipcios, más se multiplicaban los israelitas. Los egipcios estaban alarmados

e hicieron aún más amarga la esclavitud de los hebreos. Los obligaron a trabajar duramente largas jornadas en los campos y a acarrear pesadas cargas de ladrillo y mezcla.

Y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre, en hacer barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo, y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con rigorismo.

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

El faraón, rey de Egipto, ordenó a las parteras que atendían a las mujeres hebreas (dos de las cuales se llamaban Sifrá y Fuvá) que se fijaran en el sexo del bebé a la hora de nacer, y que mataran a todos los niños hebreos en cuanto nacieran, y que dejaran con vida sólo a las niñas.

Y habló el rey de Egipto á las parteras de las Hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Siphra, y otra Phúa, y díjoles:

Pero las parteras tenían temor de Dios y desobedecieron al faraón, pues permitían que los niños vivieran.

Mas las parteras temieron á Dios, y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, sino que reservaban la vida á los niños.

El faraón las citó para que se presentaran delante de él, y les preguntó: ―¿Por qué me han desobedecido y han dejado vivir a los niños?

Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar á las parteras, y díjoles: Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis reservado la vida á los niños?

And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

―Señor —dijeron ellas—, las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, son tan vigorosas que dan a luz antes de que nosotras lleguemos.

Y las parteras respondieron á Faraón: Porque las mujeres Hebreas no son como las Egipcias: porque son robustas, y paren antes que la partera venga á ellas.

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

Dios bendijo a las parteras por haber favorecido a su pueblo. Así que los israelitas siguieron multiplicándose, hasta llegar a ser una nación poderosa.

Y Dios hizo bien á las parteras: y el pueblo se multiplicó, y se corroboraron en gran manera.

Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

Entonces el faraón ordenó a su pueblo que echaran al río Nilo a todo niño hebreo que naciera, pero que a las niñas las dejaran con vida.

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
