1Hierauf machten wir kehrt und brachen auf nach der Steppe auf dem Wege zum Schilfmeere, wie uns Jahwe geboten hatte. Und als wir das Gebirge Seir schon eine lange Zeit umzogen hatten,
2sprach Jahwe zu mir also:
3Ihr habt nun lange genug dieses Gebirge umzogen; schlagt die Richtung nach Norden ein!
4Und dem Volke gieb folgenden Befehl: Es steht euch der Durchzug durch das Gebiet eurer Brüder, der Söhne Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, bevor, und sie werden sich vor euch fürchten. Aber nehmt euch wohl in acht,
5daß ihr nicht Krieg mit ihnen anfangt; denn ich werde euch auch nicht einen Fuß breit von ihrem Lande geben, da ich das Gebirge Seir Esau zum Erbbesitze verliehen habe.
6Was ihr an Speise braucht, sollt ihr ihnen mit Geld abkaufen, damit ihr zu essen habt, und ebenso sollt ihr auch das nötige Wasser mit Geld von ihnen kaufen, damit ihr zu trinken habt.
7Jahwe, dein Gott, hat dich ja in allem, was du unternommen hast, gesegnet. Er hat für deinen Marsch durch diese große Steppe Fürsorge getragen: vierzig Jahre sind es nun, daß Jahwe, dein Gott, mit dir ist; an nichts hat es dir gefehlt.
8Indem wir nun von unsern Brüdern, den Söhnen Esaus, die ihre Wohnsitze in Seir haben, den Weg in der Steppe von Elath und Eziongeber weg weiter zogen, marschierten wir weiter in der Richtung nach der Steppe Moabs.
9Da sprach Jahwe zu mir: Befehde die Moabiter nicht und laß dich in keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein; denn ich gebe dir von ihrem Lande nichts zum Eigentume, da ich Ar den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitze verliehen habe.
10Die Emiter wohnten vor Zeiten darin, Leute so groß, zahlreich und hochgewachsen, wie die Enakiter.
11Auch sie galten für Rephaiter, wie die Enatiter, und die Moabiter nannten sie Emiter.
12In Seir aber wohnten vor Zeiten die Horiter; an deren Stelle setzten sich die Söhne Esaus fest, nachdem sie sie vertrieben und ausgetilgt hatten, gerade wie die Israeliten mit dem Lande verfuhren, das ihnen Jahwe zum Erbbesitze verliehen hatte.
13Macht euch nun auf und überschreitet den Bach Sared! Da überschritten wir den Bach Sared.
14Achtunddreißig Jahre waren wir unterwegs von Kades-Barnea bis zur Überschreitung des Baches Sared, bis das ganze Geschlecht, die kriegstüchtige Mannschaft, aus dem Lager weggestorben war, wie Jahwe ihnen geschworen hatte.
15Die Hand Jahwes hatte selbst noch mitgeholfen, um sie bis auf den letzten Mann aus der Mitte des Lagers zu vertilgen.
16Alle kriegstüchtige Mannschaft war nun aus dem Volke hinweggestorben.
17Da redete Jahwe mit mir also:
18Du bist jetzt auf dem Durchzuge durch das Gebiet der Moabiter, durch Ar, begriffen
19und wirst in die nächste Nähe der Ammoniter kommen; befehde sie nicht und Iaß dich nicht mit ihnen in Streit ein! Denn ich werde dir von dem Lande der Ammoniter nichts zum Eigentume geben, da ich es den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitze verliehen habe.
20Es gilt gleichfalls als ein Land der Rephaiter; vor Zeiten wohnten Rephaiter darin, und die Ammoniter nannten sie Samsummiter.
21Es waren Leute, so groß, zahlreich und hochgewachsen, wie die Enakiter. Jahwe aber vertilgte sie vor ihnen, so daß sie ihr Land einnahmen und sich an ihrer Stelle niederließen bis auf den heutigen Tag,
22wie er auch für die Söhne Esaus that, die Seir bewohnen, indem er die Horiter vor ihnen vertilgte, so daß sie ihr Land einnahmen und sich an ihrer Stelle niederließen bis auf den heutigen Tag.
23Auch die Aviter, die in Gehöften bis nach Gaza hin wohnten, wurden vertilgt von den Kaphtoritern, die aus Kaphtor kamen, und diese ließen sich an ihrer Stelle nieder.
24Brecht nun auf und überschreitet den Arnonfluß. Siehe, ich gebe den Amoriter Sihon, den König zu Hesbon, samt seinem Land in deine Gewalt; beginne die Besetzung und überziehe ihn mit Krieg!
25Von jetzt an lege ich Furcht und Schrecken vor dir auf die Völker überall unter dem Himmel: Sobald sie nur von dir hören, werden sie vor dir zittern und beben.
26Da schickte ich von der Steppe Kedemoth aus Gesandte mit folgenden friedlichen Worten an Sihon, den König zu Hesbon:
27Ich wünsche dein Land zu durchziehen, will aber immerfort nur auf der Straße bleiben, ohne zur Rechten oder zur Linken abzubiegen.
28Nahrungsmittel sollst du mir für Geld verkaufen, damit ich zu essen, und Wasser sollst du mir für Geld liefern, damit ich zu trinken habe. Um nichts, als um den Weg für meine Füße zum Durchzug ersuche ich, -
29das haben mir ebenso die Söhne Esaus, die in Seir, und die Moabiter, die in Ar wohnen, gestattet, - bis ich über den Jordan in das Land hinüberziehen kann, das Jahwe, unser Gott, uns verleihen will.
30Aber Sihon, der König zu Hesbon, weigerte sich, uns den Durchzug zu gestatten, weil Jahwe, dein Gott, seinen Sinn unbeugsam und sein Herz verstockt gemacht hatte, damit er ihn in deine Gewalt gebe, wie es jetzt gekommen ist.
31Da sprach Jahwe zu mir: Siehst du, ich habe dir bereits Sihon und sein Land preisgegeben; beginne nun mit der Besetzung, um sein Land in Besitz zu nehmen.
32Und als Sihon mit seinem gesamten Kriegsvolke gegen uns ausrückte, um uns bei Jahaz eine Schlacht zu liefern,
33gab ihn Jahwe, unser Gott, uns preis, so daß wir ihn samt seinen Söhnen und seinem gesamten Kriegsvolke besiegten.
34Damals nahmen wir auch alle seine Städte ein und vollstreckten in jeglicher Stadt an Männern, Weibern und Kindern den Bann; niemanden ließen wir entrinnen.
35Nur das Vieh und den Raub aus den von uns eingenommenen Städten behielten wir für uns als Beute.
36Von Aroer am Ufer des Arnonflusses und von der Stadt im Thale bis nach Gilead war kein fester Platz, der uns zu steil gewesen wäre; alles gab Jahwe, unser Gott, uns preis.
37Nur ließest du das Land der Ammoniter unberührt, alles, was sich zur Seite des Jabokflusses befindet, die Städte im Gebirge und alles, was Jahwe, unser Gott, verboten hatte.

1Y VOLVIMOS, y partímonos al desierto camino del mar Bermejo, como Jehová me había dicho; y rodeamos el monte de Seir por muchos días.
2Y Jehová me habló, diciendo:
3Harto habéis rodeado este monte; volveos al aquilón.
4Y manda al pueblo, diciendo: Pasando vosotros por el término de vuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seir, ellos tendrán miedo de vosotros; mas vosotros guardaos mucho:
5No os metáis con ellos; que no os daré de su tierra ni aun la holladura de la planta de un pie; porque yo he dado por heredad á Esaú el monte de Seir.
6Compraréis de ellos por dinero las viandas, y comeréis; y también compraréis de ellos el agua, y beberéis:
7Pues Jehová tu Dios te ha bendecido en toda obra de tus manos: él sabe que andas por este gran desierto: estos cuarenta años Jehová tu Dios fué contigo; y ninguna cosa te ha faltado.
8Y pasamos de nuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, por el camino de la llanura de Elath y de Esiongeber. Y volvimos, y pasamos camino del desierto de Moab.
9Y Jehová me dijo: No molestes á Moab, ni te empeñes con ellos en guerra, que no te daré posesión de su tierra; porque yo he dado á Ar por heredad á los hijos de Lot.
10(Los Emimeos habitaron en ella antes, pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto como gigantes:
11Por gigantes eran ellos también contados, como los Anaceos; y los Moabitas los llaman Emimeos.
12Y en Seir habitaron antes los Horeos, á los cuales echaron los hijos de Esaú; y los destruyeron de delante de sí, y moraron en lugar de ellos; como hizo Israel en la tierra de su posesión que les dió Jehová.)
13Levantaos ahora, y pasad el arroyo de Zered. Y pasamos el arroyo de Zered.
14Y los días que anduvimos de Cades-barnea hasta que pasamos el arroyo de Zered, fueron treinta y ocho años; hasta que se acabó toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campo, como Jehová les había jurado.
15Y también la mano de Jehová fué sobre ellos para destruirlos de en medio del campo, hasta acabarlos.
16Y aconteció que cuando se hubieron acabado de morir todos los hombres de guerra de entre el pueblo,
17Jehová me habló, diciendo:
18Tú pasarás hoy el término de Moab, á Ar,
19Y te acercarás delante de los hijos de Ammón: no los molestes, ni te metas con ellos; porque no te tengo de dar posesión de la tierra de los hijos de Ammón; que á los hijos de Lot la he dado por heredad.
20(Por tierra de gigantes fué también ella tenida: habitaron en ella gigantes en otro tiempo, á los cuales los Ammonitas llamaban Zomzommeos;
21Pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto, como los Anaceos; á los cuales Jehová destruyó de delante de los Ammonitas, quienes les sucedieron, y habitaron en su lugar:
22Como hizo con los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, de delante de los cuales destruyó á los Horeos; y ellos les sucedieron, y habitaron en su lugar hasta hoy.
23Y á los Heveos que habitaban en Haserin hasta Gaza, los Caftoreos que salieron de Caftor los destruyeron, y habitaron en su lugar.)
24Levantaos, partid, y pasad el arroyo de Arnón: he aquí he dado en tu mano á Sehón rey de Hesbón, Amorrheo, y á su tierra: comienza á tomar posesión, y empéñate con él en guerra.
25Hoy comenzaré á poner tu miedo y tu espanto sobre los pueblos debajo de todo el cielo; los cuales oirán tu fama, y temblarán, y angustiarse han delante de ti.
26Y envié mensajeros desde el desierto de Cademoth á Sehón rey de Hesbón, con palabras de paz, diciendo:
27Pasaré por tu tierra por el camino: por el camino iré, sin apartarme á diestra ni á siniestra:
28La comida me venderás por dinero, y comeré: el agua también me darás por dinero, y beberé: solamente pasaré á pie;
29Como lo hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seir, y los Moabitas que habitaban en Ar; hasta que pase el Jordán á la tierra que nos da Jehová nuestro Dios.
30Mas Sehón rey de Hesbón no quiso que pasásemos por el territorio suyo; porque Jehová tu Dios había endurecido su espíritu, y obstinado su corazón para entregarlo en tu mano, como hoy.
31Y díjome Jehová: He aquí yo he comenzado á dar delante de ti á Sehón y á su tierra; comienza á tomar posesión, para que heredes su tierra.
32Y saliónos Sehón al encuentro, él y todo su pueblo, para pelear en Jaas.
33Mas Jehová nuestro Dios lo entregó delante de nosotros; y herimos á él y á sus hijos, y á todo su pueblo.
34Y tomamos entonces todas sus ciudades, y destruimos todas las ciudades, hombres, y mujeres, y niños; no dejamos ninguno:
35Solamente tomamos para nosotros las bestias, y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos tomado.
36Desde Aroer, que está junto á la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en el arroyo, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que escapase de nosotros: todas las entregó Jehová nuestro Dios en nuestro poder.
37Solamente á la tierra de los hijos de Ammón no llegaste, ni á todo lo que está á la orilla del arroyo de Jaboc ni á las ciudades del monte, ni á lugar alguno que Jehová nuestro Dios había prohibido.

1Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.
2And the LORD spake unto me, saying,
3Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
4And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
5Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
6Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.
7For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
8And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
10The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
11Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.
12The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.
13Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.
14And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.
15For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.
16So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
17That the LORD spake unto me, saying,
18Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:
19And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
20(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
21A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
22As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
23And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
24Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
25This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
26And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
28Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
29(As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.
30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
31And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
33And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
34And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
35Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.
36From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
37Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
World English Bible
1Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as the LORD spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.
2The LORD spoke to me, saying,
3“You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.
4Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.
5Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
6You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’”
7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.
8So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9The LORD said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.”
10(The Emim lived there before, a great and numerous people, and tall as the Anakim.
11These also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.
12The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which the LORD gave to them.)
13“Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered.
14The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as the LORD swore to them.
15Moreover the LORD’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.
16So, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
17the LORD spoke to me, saying,
18“You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today.
19When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”
20(That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
21a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them from before Israel, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place,
22as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day.
23Then the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)
24“Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
25Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.”
26I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27“Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway. I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.
28You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet,
29as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God gives us.”
30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.
31The LORD said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”
32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.
33The LORD our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.
34We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining.
35Only the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.
36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The LORD our God delivered up all before us.
37Only to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near: all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God forbade us.
