Este libro registra las palabras que Moisés dirigió al pueblo de Israel cuando estaba acampado en el valle del Arabá en el desierto de Moab, al oriente del río Jordán. Las ciudades que había en la zona eran Parán, Tofel, Labán, Jazerot y Dizahab.
ESTAS son las palabras que habló Moisés á todo Israel de esta parte del Jordán en el desierto, en el llano delante del mar Bermejo, entre Parán, y Thopel, y Labán, y Haseroth, y Dizahab.
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
Las palabras fueron pronunciadas el primer día del mes undécimo; habían pasado cuarenta años desde el momento en que el pueblo de Israel dejó el monte Horeb (aunque el viaje a pie desde el monte Horeb hasta Cades Barnea normalmente solo dura once días, siguiendo la vía del monte Seír).

Y fué, que á los cuarenta años, en el mes undécimo, al primero del mes, Moisés habló á los hijos de Israel conforme á todas las cosas que Jehová le había mandado acerca de ellos;
And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

Estas, pues, son las palabras que Moisés declaró ante el pueblo de Israel:

«Hace cuarenta años, junto al monte Horeb, el Señor, nuestro Dios, nos dijo: “Ya han estado aquí largo tiempo.
Jehová nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb, diciendo: Harto habéis estado en este monte;
The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:
“The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.
Vayan ahora y ocupen la región montañosa de los amorreos, el valle del Arabá, el Néguev, y toda la tierra de Canaán y el Líbano: toda el área desde las costas del mar Mediterráneo hasta el río Éufrates.
Volveos, partíos é id al monte del Amorrheo, y á todas sus comarcas, en el llano, en el monte, y en los valles, y al mediodía, y á la costa de la mar, á la tierra del Cananeo, y el Líbano, hasta el gran río, el río Eufrates.
Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

Yo se la doy a ustedes. Entren y poséanla, porque es la tierra que el Señor prometió a sus antepasados Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, y a todos sus descendientes”.
Mirad, yo he dado la tierra en vuestra presencia; entrad y poseed la tierra que Jehová juró á vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob, que les daría á ellos y á su simiente después de ellos.
Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

»En aquel tiempo le dije al pueblo: “Ayúdenme. Ustedes son una gran carga para que yo la lleve solo,
Y yo os hablé entonces, diciendo: Yo no puedo llevaros solo:
And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

porque el Señor nos ha multiplicado como las estrellas.
Jehová vuestro Dios os ha multiplicado, y he aquí sois hoy vosotros como las estrellas del cielo en multitud.
The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Quiera él multiplicarnos mil veces más y bendecirnos como ha prometido.
¡Jehová Dios de vuestros padres añada sobre vosotros como sois mil veces, y os bendiga, como os ha prometido!

Pero ¿qué puede hacer un hombre solo para resolver las dificultades, los pleitos y los problemas que hay entre ustedes?
¿Cómo llevaré yo solo vuestras molestias, vuestras cargas, y vuestros pleitos?
How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?
Elijan, pues, hombres de cada tribu que sean sabios, experimentados y entendidos, y yo los pondré como jefes”.
Dadme de entre vosotros, de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y entendidos y expertos, para que yo los ponga por vuestros jefes.
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Take wise men of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”
»Ellos estuvieron de acuerdo con esto.
Y me respondisteis, y dijisteis: Bueno es hacer lo que has dicho.
And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.
You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”
Entonces tomé los hombres que eligieron, varios de cada tribu, y los señalé como jefes administrativos a cargo de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez para decidir en sus dificultades y ayudarles en todo.
Y tomé los principales de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y expertos, y púselos por jefes sobre vosotros, jefes de millares, y jefes de cientos, y jefes de cincuenta, y cabos de diez, y gobernadores á vuestras tribus.
So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.
Les di órdenes de que fueran perfectamente justos en todo tiempo con sus hermanos y aun con los extranjeros.
Y entonces mandé á vuestros jueces, diciendo: Oid entre vuestros hermanos, y juzgad justamente entre el hombre y su hermano, y el que le es extranjero.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.
“Cuando tomen decisiones”, les dije; “no favorezcan a un hombre porque sea rico; sean justos con el grande y con el pequeño. No teman si a ellos no les agrada el fallo de ustedes, porque ustedes son jueces en el nombre de Dios. Los casos demasiado difíciles tráiganmelos a mí, y yo los resolveré”.
No tengáis respeto de personas en el juicio: así al pequeño como al grande oiréis: no tendréis temor de ninguno, porque el juicio es de Dios: y la causa que os fuere difícil, la traeréis á mí, y yo la oiré.
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”
Les di además varias otras instrucciones para ustedes.
Os mandé, pues, en aquel tiempo todo lo que habíais de hacer.
And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

»Luego nos alejamos del monte Horeb y viajamos a través del desierto grande y terrible, y llegamos finalmente a las montañas de los amorreos a las cuales el Señor nuestro Dios nos había dirigido. Estábamos entonces en Cades Barnea (en el límite con la Tierra prometida) y le dije al pueblo: “El Señor, el Dios de nuestros antepasados, nos ha dado esta tierra. Vayan y poséanla como él nos ha dicho. No teman, ni duden”.
Y partidos de Horeb, anduvimos todo aquel grande y terrible desierto que habéis visto, por el camino del monte del Amorrheo, como Jehová nuestro Dios nos lo mandó; y llegamos hasta Cades-barnea.
And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

Entonces os dije: Llegado habéis al monte del Amorrheo, el cual Jehová nuestro Dios nos da.
And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.
I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God gives to us.

Mira, Jehová tu Dios ha dado delante de ti la tierra: sube y poséela, como Jehová el Dios de tus padres te ha dicho; no temas ni desmayes.
Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
Behold, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the LORD the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”
»Pero los israelitas replicaron: “Deja que primero enviemos espías para descubrir el mejor camino de entrada y para decidir qué ciudades debemos capturar en primer lugar”.
Y llegasteis á mí todos vosotros, y dijisteis: Enviemos varones delante de nosotros, que nos reconozcan la tierra y nos traigan de vuelta razón del camino por donde hemos de subir, y de las ciudades adonde hemos de llegar.
And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let’s send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”
»Esto me pareció bien, por lo que elegí doce espías, uno de cada tribu.
Y el dicho me pareció bien: y tomé doce varones de vosotros, un varón por tribu:
And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
The thing pleased me well. I took twelve of your men, one man for every tribe.
Los espías cruzaron las colinas y llegaron al valle de Escol, y volvieron con muestras de las frutas que allí se producían. Una sola mirada bastó para convencernos de que la tierra que el Señor nos había dado era una tierra buena.
Y se encaminaron, y subieron al monte, y llegaron hasta la arroyada de Escol, y reconocieron la tierra.
And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

Y tomaron en sus manos del fruto del país, y nos lo trajeron, y diéronnos cuenta, y dijeron: Es buena la tierra que Jehová nuestro Dios nos da.
And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

»Pero el pueblo no quiso entrar y se rebeló contra el mandamiento del Señor.
Empero no quisisteis subir, antes fuisteis rebeldes al dicho de Jehová vuestro Dios;
Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:
Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God.
Todos a una sola voz murmuraron y se quejaron en sus tiendas y dijeron: “El Señor debe aborrecernos pues nos ha sacado de Egipto para ser asesinados en el desierto por estos amorreos.
Y murmurasteis en vuestras tiendas, diciendo: Porque Jehová nos aborrecía, nos ha sacado de tierra de Egipto, para entregarnos en mano del Amorrheo para destruirnos.
And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because the LORD hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.
¿A dónde vamos a entrar? Nuestros hermanos que han visitado la tierra nos han atemorizado con todo lo que nos contaron. Dicen que la gente de esa tierra es alta y fuerte, y que los muros de sus ciudades llegan hasta el cielo. Por si fuera poco, han visto gigantes allí: los descendientes de Anac”.
¿A dónde subimos? Nuestros hermanos han hecho desfallecer nuestro corazón, diciendo: Este pueblo es mayor y más alto que nosotros, las ciudades grandes y muradas hasta el cielo; y también vimos allí hijos de gigantes.
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”
»Pero yo les dije: “No teman.
Entonces os dije: No temáis, ni tengáis miedo de ellos.
Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
Then I said to you, “Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them.
El Señor nuestro Dios irá delante, y peleará por ustedes como lo hizo en Egipto.
Jehová vuestro Dios, el cual va delante de vosotros, él peleará por vosotros, conforme á todas las cosas que hizo por vosotros en Egipto delante de vuestros ojos;
The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
The LORD your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,
Él nos ha cuidado en nuestra peregrinación por el desierto de la manera que un padre cuida a sus hijos”.
Y en el desierto has visto que Jehová tu Dios te ha traído, como trae el hombre á su hijo, por todo el camino que habéis andado, hasta que habéis venido á este lugar.
And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
and in the wilderness where you have seen how that the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”
Pero nada de lo que les dije los convenció. No quisieron creer al Señor nuestro Dios,
Y aun con esto no creisteis en Jehová vuestro Dios,
Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,
Yet in this thing you didn’t believe the LORD your God,
quien los había guiado por el camino y había elegido los mejores lugares para que acamparan, y los había guiado con una columna de fuego por la noche y una columna de nubes durante el día.
El cual iba delante de vosotros por el camino, para reconoceros el lugar donde habíais de asentar el campo, con fuego de noche para mostraros el camino por donde anduvieseis, y con nube de día.
Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

»El Señor oyó la queja de los israelitas y se enojó.
Y oyó Jehová la voz de vuestras palabras, y enojóse, y juró diciendo:
And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
The LORD heard the voice of your words and was angry, and swore, saying,
Juró que nadie de esa generación viviría para ver las bondades de la tierra que había prometido a sus antepasados.
No verá hombre alguno de estos de esta mala generación, la buena tierra que juré había de dar á vuestros padres,
Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,
“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,
Caleb (hijo de Jefone) es el único que, por haber confiado completamente en el Señor, recibirá, para él y sus descendientes, como heredad personal parte de la tierra sobre la cual había andado.
Excepto Caleb hijo de Jephone: él la verá, y á él le daré la tierra que pisó, y á sus hijos; porque cumplió en pos de Jehová.
Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD.”
»Y el Señor también se enojó conmigo por causa del pueblo, y me dijo: “Tampoco tú entrarás en la Tierra prometida.
Y también contra mí se airó Jehová por vosotros, diciendo: Tampoco tú entrarás allá:
Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

Josué (el hijo de Nun), tu ayudante, guiará a tu pueblo hacia ella. Anímale mientras se prepara para tomar el mando.
Josué hijo de Nun, que está delante de ti, él entrará allá: anímale; porque él la hará heredar á Israel.
But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

La tierra se la entregaré a la nueva generación, a aquellos que según sus padres iban a morir en el desierto y todos los pequeños quienes todavía no saben distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo.
Y vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis serán por presa, y vuestros hijos que no saben hoy bueno ni malo, ellos entrarán allá, y á ellos la daré, y ellos la heredarán.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
Moreover your little ones, whom you said would be captured or killed, your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, shall go in there. I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.
Por eso se dirigió a los de la antigua generación y les dijo: Ya que así lo desean, ¡regresen al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo!”.
Y vosotros volveos, y partíos al desierto camino del mar Bermejo.
But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

»Entonces ellos confesaron: “Hemos pecado; entraremos en la tierra y pelearemos por ella como el Señor nuestro Dios nos ha dicho”. Se armaron, pues, pensando que sería fácil conquistar la región.
Entonces respondisteis y me dijisteis: Pecado hemos contra Jehová; nosotros subiremos y pelearemos, conforme á todo lo que Jehová nuestro Dios nos ha mandado. Y os armasteis cada uno de sus armas de guerra, y os apercibisteis para subir al monte.
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.
Pero el Señor me dijo: “Ordénales que no lo hagan, porque no iré con ellos; ¡serán derrotados!”.
Y Jehová me dijo: Diles: No subáis, ni peleéis, pues no estoy entre vosotros; porque no seáis heridos delante de vuestros enemigos.
And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
The LORD said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up and don’t fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.’”
»Pero los israelitas no quisieron escuchar. En abierta rebelión contra el mandato del Señor, subieron a los montes a pelear.
Y os hablé, y no disteis oído; antes fuisteis rebeldes al dicho de Jehová, y persistiendo con altivez, subisteis al monte.
So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.
So I spoke to you, and you didn’t listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.
Pero los amorreos que vivían allí salieron a presentarles batalla y, como avispas, los persiguieron desde Seír hasta Jormá y mataron a muchos de ellos.
Y salió el Amorrheo, que habitaba en aquel monte, á vuestro encuentro, y os persiguieron, como hacen las avispas, y os derrotaron en Seir, persiguiéndoos hasta Horma.
And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.
The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.
Luego regresaron y lloraron delante del Señor, pero no los escuchó.
Y volvisteis, y llorasteis delante de Jehová; pero Jehová no escuchó vuestra voz, ni os prestó oído.
And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
You returned and wept before the LORD, but the LORD didn’t listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.
Tuvieron que permanecer en Cades largo tiempo.
Y estuvisteis en Cades por muchos días, como en los días que habéis estado.
So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.
