1Im dritten Jahre der Regierung Jojakims, des Königs von Juda, zog Nebukadnezar, der König von Babylon, gegen Jerusalem und belagerte es.
2Und der Herr ließ Jojakim, den König von Juda, und einen Teil der Geräte des Gotteshauses in seine Gewalt fallen, und er brachte sie nach dem Lande Sinear in den Tempel seines Gottes; die Geräte aber legte er im Schatzhause seines Gottes nieder.
3Darauf befahl der König seinem obersten Kammerherrn Aspenas, er solle von den Israeliten, und zwar sowohl aus dem königlichen Geschlecht als auch aus den vornehmsten Familien, Knaben herbeischaffen,
4die frei von jedem körperlichen Fehler wären und ein schönes Äußeres, eine reiche Begabung, eine gute Vorbildung und ein leichtes Fassungsvermögen besäßen und sich zum Dienst im königlichen Palast eigneten; diese sollten dann in den Schriften und der Sprache der Chaldäer ausgebildet werden.
5Der König wies ihnen die tägliche Beköstigung von der königlichen Tafel und aus seinem Weinkeller zu und bestimmte für ihre Ausbildung drei Jahre, nach deren Ablauf sie in den königlichen Dienst treten sollten.
6Unter ihnen befanden sich die Judäer Daniel, Hananja, Misael und Asarja;
7der Oberkammerherr gab ihnen aber (andere) Namen und nannte den Daniel Beltsazar, den Hananja Sadrach, den Misael Mesach und den Asarja Abed-Nego.
8Da nun Daniel sich fest vorgenommen hatte, sich nicht durch den Genuß der Tafelkost des Königs und des Weines, den jener trank, zu verunreinigen, bat er den Oberkammerherrn um die Erlaubnis, sich nicht verunreinigen zu müssen;
9und Gott ließ Daniel Huld und Gnade bei dem Oberkammerherrn finden,
10so daß dieser zu Daniel sagte: »Ich fürchte nur meinen Herrn, den König, der Speise und Trank für euch bestimmt hat. Wenn er nämlich wahrnähme, daß euer Aussehen nicht so gesund wäre wie das der anderen jungen Leute eures Alters, so hätte ich durch eure Schuld meinen Kopf beim König verwirkt.«
11Da entgegnete Daniel dem Oberkammerherrn, der zum Aufseher über Daniel, Hananja, Misael und Asarja bestellt war:
12»Mache doch einmal einen Versuch mit deinen Knechten zehn Tage lang, daß man uns Pflanzenkost zu essen und Wasser zu trinken gibt!
13Dann möge unser Aussehen und das Aussehen der anderen jungen Leute, die von der königlichen Tafel zu essen bekommen, von dir besichtigt werden, und je nachdem du es dann befinden wirst, magst du mit deinen Knechten verfahren!«
14Da ging er auf diesen ihren Vorschlag ein und machte zehn Tage lang einen Versuch mit ihnen;
15und nach Ablauf der zehn Tage sahen sie gesünder und besser genährt aus als alle die anderen jungen Leute, welche von der königlichen Tafel zu essen bekamen.
16Da ließ denn der Aufseher die Beköstigung von der königlichen Tafel und den Wein, den sie trinken sollten, wegfallen und ließ ihnen Pflanzenkost verabfolgen.
17Gott aber verlieh diesen vier Jünglingen Einsicht und Verständnis für alle Gelehrsamkeit und Wissenschaft; Daniel verstand sich außerdem auch auf Gesichte und Träume jeder Art.
18Als nun die Zeit, nach deren Ablauf der König ihre Vorstellung befohlen hatte, abgelaufen war und der Oberkammerherr sie dem Nebukadnezar vorstellte
19und der König sich mit ihnen unterredete, erwies sich unter ihnen allen keiner wie Daniel, Hananja, Misael und Asarja; daher wurden sie unter die königlichen Hofbeamten aufgenommen.
20Und in allen Fällen, bei denen es sich um Einsicht und Scharfsinn handelte, fand der König sie, sooft er sie um ihre Ansicht befragte, allen Zauberern und Beschwörern in seinem ganzen Reich zehnfach überlegen.
21Daniel erlebte dann noch das erste Regierungsjahr des Königs Cyrus.

1EN el año tercero del reinado de Joacim rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia á Jerusalem, y cercóla.
2Y el Señor entregó en sus manos á Joacim rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la casa de Dios, y trájolos á tierra de Sinar, á la casa de su dios: y metió los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.
3Y dijo el rey á Aspenaz, príncipe de sus eunucos, que trajese de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real de los príncipes,
4Muchachos en quienes no hubiese tacha alguna, y de buen parecer, y enseñados en toda sabiduría, y sabios en ciencia, y de buen entendimiento, é idóneos para estar en el palacio del rey; y que les enseñase las letras y la lengua de los Caldeos.
5Y señalóles el rey ración para cada día de la ración de la comida del rey, y del vino de su beber: que los criase tres años, para que al fin de ellos estuviesen delante del rey.
6Y fueron entre ellos, de los hijos de Judá, Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:
7A los cuales el príncipe de los eunucos puso nombres: y puso á Daniel, Beltsasar; y á Ananías, Sadrach; y á Misael, Mesach; y á Azarías, Abed-nego.
8Y Daniel propuso en su corazón de no contaminarse en la ración de la comida del rey, ni en el vino de su beber: pidió por tanto al príncipe de los eunucos de no contaminarse.
9(Y puso Dios á Daniel en gracia y en buena voluntad con el príncipe de los eunucos.)
10Y dijo el príncipe de los eunucos á Daniel: Tengo temor de mi señor el rey, que señaló vuestra comida y vuestra bebida; pues luego que él habrá visto vuestros rostros más tristes que los de los muchachos que son semejantes á vosotros, condenaréis para con el rey mi cabeza.
11Entonces dijo Daniel á Melsar, que estaba puesto por el príncipe de los eunucos sobre Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías:
12Prueba, te ruego, tus siervos diez días, y dennos legumbres á comer, y agua á beber.
13Parezcan luego delante de ti nuestros rostros, y los rostros de los muchachos que comen de la ración de la comida del rey; y según que vieres, harás con tus siervos.
14Consintió pues con ellos en esto, y probó con ellos diez días.
15Y al cabo de los diez días pareció el rostro de ellos mejor y más nutrido de carne, que los otros muchachos que comían de la ración de la comida del rey.
16Así fué que Melsar tomaba la ración de la comida de ellos, y el vino de su beber, y dábales legumbres.
17Y á estos cuatro muchachos dióles Dios conocimiento é inteligencia en todas letras y ciencia: mas Daniel tuvo entendimiento en toda visión y sueños.
18Pasados pues los días al fin de los cuales había dicho el rey que los trajesen, el príncipe de los eunucos los trajo delante de Nabucodonosor.
19Y el rey habló con ellos, y no fué hallado entre todos ellos otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías: y así estuvieron delante del rey.
20Y en todo negocio de sabiduría é inteligencia que el rey les demandó, hallólos diez veces mejores que todos los magos y astrólogos que había en todo su reino.
21Y fué Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.
King James Version
1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. He brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3The king spoke to Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the royal offspring and of the nobles:
4youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding science, and who had the ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
5The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years, that at its end they should stand before the king.
6Now among these of the children of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
10The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? Then you would endanger my head with the king.”
11Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12“Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s delicacies; and as you see, deal with your servants.”
14So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.
15At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer and they were fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate of the king’s delicacies.
16So the steward took away their delicacies and the wine that they were given to drink, and gave them vegetables.
17Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king.
20In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.
21Daniel continued even to the first year of King Cyrus.
