1Hierauf fragte David beim HERRN an: »Soll ich in eine der Städte Judas hinaufziehen?« Der HERR antwortete ihm: »Ja, ziehe hinauf.« Als David weiter fragte: »Wohin soll ich ziehen?«, erhielt er die Antwort: »Nach Hebron.«
2So zog denn David dorthin samt seinen beiden Frauen Ahinoam aus Jesreel und Abigail, der Witwe Nabals, aus Karmel;
3auch seine Kriegsleute, die bei ihm waren, ließ er alle samt ihren Familien hinaufziehen, und sie ließen sich in den zu Hebron gehörigen Ortschaften nieder.
4Da kamen die Männer von Juda und salbten David dort zum König über den Stamm Juda. Als man dann David die Nachricht brachte, daß die Männer von Jabes in Gilead es seien, die Saul begraben hätten,
5da sandte David Boten an die Einwohner von Jabes in Gilead und ließ ihnen sagen: »Der Segen des HERRN möge euch dafür zuteil werden, daß ihr Saul, eurem Herrn, diese Liebe erwiesen und ihn begraben habt!
6So möge nun der HERR euch Güte und Treue erweisen! Und auch ich will euch dafür belohnen, daß ihr so gehandelt habt.
7Jetzt aber seid guten Mutes und beweist euch als wackere Männer! Denn Saul, euer Herr, ist (zwar) tot, aber der Stamm Juda hat mich zum König über sich gesalbt.«
8Abner aber, der Sohn Ners, der Heerführer Sauls, nahm Sauls Sohn Isboseth, brachte ihn nach Mahanaim hinüber
9und machte ihn dort zum König über Gilead, über Asser, über Jesreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, überhaupt über ganz Israel.
10Vierzig Jahre war Isboseth, der Sohn Sauls, alt, als er König über Israel wurde, und zwei Jahre lang hat er regiert; nur der Stamm Juda hielt zu David.
11Die Zeit aber, die David als König über den Stamm Juda in Hebron regiert hat, betrug sieben Jahre und sechs Monate.
12Einst zog Abner, der Sohn Ners, mit den Leuten Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, von Mahanaim nach Gibeon;
13ebenso rückte Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja, mit den Leuten Davids (von Hebron) aus; beide Heere stießen dann am Teiche von Gibeon aufeinander und lagerten sich, das eine diesseits, das andere jenseits des Teiches.
14Da ließ Abner dem Joab sagen: »Die jungen Leute könnten ja einmal auftreten und ein Kampfspiel vor unsern Augen aufführen!« Joab ließ antworten: »Gut! Es soll geschehen!«
15Da machten sie sich auf und traten einander abgezählt paarweise gegenüber: zwölf aus Benjamin für Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, und zwölf von den Leuten Davids.
16Da faßte jeder seinen Gegner beim Schopf und stieß ihm das Schwert in die Seite, so daß sie insgesamt fielen; daher nannte man jenen Ort ›Feld der Klingen‹; er liegt bei Gibeon.
17Als sich darauf an diesem Tage ein überaus erbitterter Kampf entspann, wurde Abner und das Heer der Israeliten von den Leuten Davids in die Flucht geschlagen.
18Es befanden sich aber dort (im Heere Davids) die drei Söhne der Zeruja: Joab, Abisai und Asahel, von denen Asahel schnellfüßig war wie eine Gazelle auf dem Felde.
19Als nun Asahel den Abner verfolgte, ohne weder nach rechts noch nach links bei der Verfolgung hinter Abner abzubiegen,
20wandte Abner sich um und rief: »Bist du es, Asahel?« Er antwortete: »Jawohl.«
21Da rief Abner ihm zu: »Wende dich doch nach links oder nach rechts (von mir) ab und mache dich an einen von den Leuten und nimm dir seine Rüstung!« Aber Asahel wollte nicht von ihm ablassen.
22Da rief Abner ihm noch einmal zu: »Gehe hinter mir weg! Warum soll ich dich zu Boden schlagen? Wie könnte ich dann noch deinem Bruder Joab vor die Augen treten?«
23Als er trotzdem die Verfolgung nicht aufgeben wollte, stieß ihn Abner mit dem unteren Ende seines Speeres in den Unterleib, so daß der Speer hinten herausdrang und er dort zu Boden stürzte und an jener Stelle starb. Alle aber, die zu der Stelle kamen, wo Asahel gefallen und gestorben war, blieben stehen.
24Joab aber und Abisai setzten die Verfolgung Abners fort und waren bei Sonnenuntergang bis zum Hügel Amma gelangt, der Giah gegenüber in der Richtung nach der Wüste Gibeon zu liegt.
25Hier sammelten sich die Benjaminiten hinter Abner her, bildeten eine geschlossene Schar und setzten sich oben auf dem Hügel fest.
26Nun rief Abner dem Joab die Worte zu: »Soll denn das Schwert ewig fressen? Siehst du nicht, daß ein Verzweiflungskampf das Ende sein wird? Wann wirst du endlich deinen Leuten befehlen, von der Verfolgung ihrer Brüder abzustehen?«
27Joab erwiderte: »So wahr Gott lebt! Hättest du nicht geredet, so hätten die Leute insgesamt erst morgen früh von der Verfolgung ihrer Brüder abgelassen!«
28Hierauf ließ Joab ein Zeichen mit der Posaune geben, und sofort machte das ganze Heer halt, gab die weitere Verfolgung der Israeliten auf und setzte den Kampf nicht fort.
29Abner marschierte nun mit seinen Leuten während der ganzen folgenden Nacht durch die Jordanebene, überschritt dann den Jordan, durchzog das ganze Tal Bithron und gelangte so nach Mahanaim. –
30Als Joab aber die Verfolgung Abners aufgegeben und seine ganze Mannschaft wieder gesammelt hatte, wurden von den Leuten Davids außer Asahel nur neunzehn Mann vermißt,
31während Davids Leute von den Benjaminiten und den übrigen Leuten Abners 360 Mann erschlagen hatten.
32Den Asahel aber hob man auf und begrub ihn im Begräbnis seines Vaters zu Bethlehem. Joab aber und seine Leute marschierten die ganze Nacht hindurch, bis sie bei Tagesanbruch in Hebron ankamen.

1DESPUÉS de esto aconteció que David consultó á Jehová, diciendo: ¿Subiré á alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Y Jehová le respondió: Sube. Y David tornó á decir: ¿A dónde subiré? Y él le dijo: A Hebrón.
2Y David subió allá, y con él sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam Jezreelita y Abigail, la que fué mujer de Nabal del Carmelo.
3Y llevó también David consigo los hombres que con él habían estado, cada uno con su familia; los cuales moraron en las ciudades de Hebrón.
4Y vinieron los varones de Judá, y ungieron allí á David por rey sobre la casa de Judá. Y dieron aviso á David, diciendo: Los de Jabes de Galaad son los que sepultaron á Saúl.
5Y envió David mensajeros á los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles: Benditos seáis vosotros de Jehová, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor Saúl en haberle dado sepultura.
6Ahora pues, Jehová haga con vosotros misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho.
7Esfuércense pues ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues que muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos.
8Mas Abner hijo de Ner, general de ejército de Saúl, tomó á Is-boseth hijo de Saúl, é hízolo pasar al real:
9Y alzólo por rey sobre Galaad, y sobre Gessuri, y sobre Jezreel, y sobre Ephraim, y sobre Benjamín, y sobre todo Israel.
10De cuarenta años era Is-boseth hijo de Saúl, cuando comenzó á reinar sobre Israel; y reinó dos años. Sola la casa de Judá seguía á David.
11Y fué el número de los días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá, siete años y seis meses.
12Y Abner hijo de Ner salió de Mahanaim á Gabaón con los siervos de Is-boseth hijo de Saúl.
13Y Joab hijo de Sarvia, y los siervos de David, salieron y encontráronlos junto al estanque de Gabaón: y como se juntaron, paráronse los unos de la una parte del estanque, y los otros de la otra.
14Y dijo Abner á Joab: Levántense ahora los mancebos, y maniobren delante de nosotros. Y Joab respondió: Levántense.
15Entonces se levantaron, y en número de doce, pasaron de Benjamín de la parte de Is-boseth hijo de Saúl; y doce de los siervos de David.
16Y cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su compañero, y metióle su espada por el costado, cayendo así á una; por lo que fué llamado aquel lugar, Helcath-assurim, el cual está en Gabaón.
17Y hubo aquel día una batalla muy recia, y Abner y los hombres de Israel fueron vencidos de los siervos de David.
18Y estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, y Abisai, y Asael. Este Asael era suelto de pies como un corzo del campo.
19El cual Asael siguió á Abner, yendo tras de él sin apartarse á diestra ni á siniestra.
20Y Abner miró atrás, y dijo: ¿No eres tú Asael? Y él respondió: Sí.
21Entonces Abner le dijo: Apártate á la derecha ó á la izquierda, y agárrate alguno de los mancebos, y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él.
22Y Abner tornó á decir á Asael: Apártate de en pos de mí, porque te heriré derribándote en tierra, y después ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro á tu hermano Joab?
23Y no queriendo él irse, hiriólo Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta costilla, y salióle la lanza por las espaldas, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y estaba muerto, se paraban.
24Mas Joab y Abisai siguieron á Abner; y púsoseles el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amma, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.
25Y juntáronse los hijos de Benjamín en un escuadrón con Abner, y paráronse en la cumbre del collado.
26Y Abner dió voces á Joab, diciendo: ¿Consumirá la espada perpetuamente? ¿no sabes tú que al cabo se sigue amargura? ¿hasta cuándo no has de decir al pueblo que se vuelvan de seguir á sus hermanos?
27Y Joab respondió: Vive Dios que si no hubieras hablado, ya desde esta mañana el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir á sus hermanos.
28Entonces Joab tocó el cuerno, y todo el pueblo se detuvo, y no siguió más á los de Israel, ni peleó más.
29Y Abner y los suyos caminaron por la campiña toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bitrón, y llegaron á Mahanaim.
30Joab también volvió de seguir á Abner, y juntando todo el pueblo, faltaron de los siervos de David diecinueve hombres, y Asael.
31Mas los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, trescientos y sesenta hombres, que murieron. Tomaron luego á Asael, y sepultáronlo en el sepulcro de su padre en Beth-lehem.
32Y caminaron toda aquella noche Joab y los suyos, y amanecióles en Hebrón.

1And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.
3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.
5And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10Ish-bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
World English Bible
1After this, David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” The LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”
2So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
3David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.
4The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”
5David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you by the LORD, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.
6Now may the LORD show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.
7Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
8Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.
9He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13Joab the son of Zeruiah and David’s servants went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.
14Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and compete before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”
15Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of David’s servants.
16They each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.
17The battle was very severe that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before David’s servants.
18The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.
19Asahel pursued Abner. He didn’t turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.
20Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is.”
21Abner said to him, “Turn away to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn away from following him.
22Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?”
23However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. The sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.
26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”
27Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother.”
28So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still and pursued Israel no more, and they fought no more.
29Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
30Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen men of David’s and Asahel were missing.
31But David’s servants had struck Benjamin Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.
32They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
