1Und Jahwes Zorn entbrannte aufs Neue gegen Israel, so daß er David gegen sie aufstiftete mit dem Geheiß: Auf! zähle Israel und Juda!
2Da gebot der König Joab und den unter ihm stehenden Truppenführern: Durchstreife einmal alle Stämme Israels von Dan bis Beerseba und haltet Volkszählung, damit ich die Zahl der Bevölkerung erfahre!
3Joab erwiderte dem König: Und mag Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Volke - sie mögen sein so viel sie wollen - noch hundertmal mehr hinzuthun, und mag mein Herr und König das selbst noch erleben - aber warum hegt mein Herr und König ein solches Verlangen?
4Aber des Königs Befehl bezwang Joab und die Truppenführer; so begab sich denn Joab mit den Truppenführern vom König hinweg, um die Volkszählung an Israel vorzunehmen.
5Sie überschritten den Jordan und fingen bei Aroer an und bei der Stadt, die im Bachthale liegt, in der Richtung nach Gad und nach Jaeser hin.
6So gelangten sie nach Gilead und bis zum Lande der Hethiter, gegen Kades hin. Darauf gelangten sie nach Dan, und von Dan bogen sie um nach Sidon zu.
7Sodann gelangten sie zur Festung von Tyrus und zu allen Städten der Heviter und Kanaaniter, worauf sie von da hinweg ins Südland von Juda, nach Beerseba, zogen.
8Als sie so das ganze Land durchstreift hatten, kamen sie nach Verlauf von neun Monaten und zwanzig Tagen heim nach Jerusalem.
9Joab gab dem Könige die Zahl an, die sich bei der Musterung des Volks herausgestellt hatte, und zwar belief sich Israel auf 800 000 waffenfähige, schwertgerüstete Männer und die Judäer auf 500 000 Mann.
10Aber David schlug das Gewissen, nachdem er das Volk hatte zählen lassen. Da sprach David zu Jahwe: Ich habe mit dem, was ich that, schwer gesündigt; nun aber, Jahwe, laß doch deinem Knechte seine Verschuldung hingehen, denn ich war schwer bethört!
11Als sich nun David am Morgen erhoben hatte (es erging nämlich das Wort Jahwes an den Propheten Gad, den Seher Davids, mit der Weisung:
12Gehe hin und sprich zu David: So spricht Jahwe: Drei Dinge lege ich dir vor; wähle dir eines davon, daß ich es dir anthue!),
13da ging Gad zu David hinein, teilte ihm dies mit und sprach zu ihm: Willst du, daß drei Jahre Hungersnot über dein Land kommen soll, oder daß du drei Monate vor deinen Feinden fliehen mußt, und das Schwert dich verfolge, oder daß drei Tage Pest in deinem Lande sei? Nun besinne dich und sieh' zu, was ich dem, der mich sendet, antworten soll!
14David entgegnete Gad: Mir ist sehr bange - laß uns in die Hand Jahwes fallen, denn sein Erbarmen ist groß; aber Menschen möchte ich nicht in die Hände fallen!
15So wählte sich David die Pest. Es war aber gerade die Zeit der Weizenernte, als die Seuche begann, und es starben aus dem Volke von Dan bis Beerseba 70 000 Mann.
16Als aber der Engel seine Hand gegen Jerusalem ausstreckte, um es zu Grunde zu richten, da reute Jahwe das Unheil, und er gebot dem Engel, der die Verheerung im Volk anzurichten hatte: Genug! ziehe nun deine Hand ab! - der Engel Jahwes befand sich eben bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Arawna.
17Als aber David sah, wie der Engel das Volk niederschlug, betete er also zu Jahwe: Ich habe ja gesündigt und habe mich verschuldet; diese aber, die Schafe, - was haben sie gethan? Laß doch deine Hand sich gegen mich und meine Familie wenden!
18An jenem Tage erschien dann Gad bei David und sprach zu ihm: Geh' hinauf, errichte Jahwe einen Altar auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Arawna!
19Da begab sich David auf Gads Geheiß hinauf, entsprechend dem Befehl Jahwes.
20Als nun Arawna ausschaute und den König gewahrte, wie er mit seinem Gefolge auf ihn zuschritt, da trat Arawna hinaus und verneigte sich vor dem Könige mit dem Angesicht bis auf den Boden.
21Sodann fragte Arawna: Warum kommt mein Herr und König zu seinem Sklaven? David erwiderte: Um dir die Tenne abzukaufen, damit ich Jahwe einen Altar baue, und so die Seuche vom Volk abgewehrt wird.
22Arawna entgegnete David: Mein Herr und König wolle nehmen, was ihm zusagt, und opfern: sieh' da die Rinder zum Brandopfer und die Dreschschlitten und das Geschirr der Rinder zum Brennholz -
23das alles schenkt dem Könige der Sklave meines königlichen Herrn. Und Arawna sprach zum Könige: Jahwe, dein Gott, möge dir geneigt sein!
24Der König erwiderte jedoch Arawna: Nein, sondern ich will es von dir um Entgelt käuflich erwerben und will Jahwe, meinem Gotte, nicht Brandopfer darbringen, die ich umsonst habe! So kaufte denn David die Tenne und die Rinder für den Betrag von 50 Silbersekeln.
25Darauf baute David dort Jahwe einen Altar und brachte Brand- und Heilsopfer dar. Und Jahwe ließ sich dem Lande wieder günstig stimmen und die Seuche wurde von Israel abgewehrt.

1Y VOLVIÓ el furor de Jehová á encenderse contra Israel, é incitó á David contra ellos á que dijese: Ve, cuenta á Israel y á Judá.
2Y dijo el rey á Joab, general del ejército que tenía consigo: Rodea todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beer-seba, y contad el pueblo, para que yo sepa el número de la gente.
3Y Joab respondió al rey: Añada Jehová tu Dios al pueblo cien veces tanto como son, y que lo vea mi señor el rey; mas ¿para qué quiere esto mi señor el rey?
4Empero la palabra del rey pudo más que Joab, y que los capitanes del ejército. Salió pues Joab, con los capitanes del ejército, de delante del rey, para contar el pueblo de Israel.
5Y pasando el Jordán asentaron en Aroer, á la mano derecha de la ciudad que está en medio de la arroyada de Gad y junto á Jazer.
6Después vinieron á Galaad, y á la tierra baja de Absi: y de allí vinieron á Dan-jaán y alrededor de Sidón.
7Y vinieron luego á la fortaleza de Tiro, y á todas las ciudades de los Heveos y de los Cananeos; y salieron al mediodía de Judá, á Beer-seba.
8Y después que hubieron andado toda la tierra, volvieron á Jerusalem al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días.
9Y Joab dió la cuenta del número del pueblo al rey; y fueron los de Israel ochocientos mil hombres fuertes que sacaban espada; y de los de Judá quinientos mil hombres.
10Y después que David hubo contado el pueblo, punzóle su corazón; y dijo David á Jehová: Yo he pecado gravemente por haber hecho esto; mas ahora, oh Jehová, ruégote que quites el pecado de tu siervo, porque yo he obrado muy neciamente.
11Y por la mañana, cuando David se hubo levantado, fué palabra de Jehová á Gad profeta, vidente de David, diciendo:
12Ve, y di á David: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te ofrezco: tú te escogerás una de ellas, la cual yo haga.
13Vino pues Gad á David, é intimóle, y díjole: ¿Quieres que te vengan siete años de hambre en tu tierra? ¿ó que huyas tres meses delante de tus enemigos, y que ellos te persigan? ¿ó que tres días haya pestilencia en tu tierra? Piensa ahora, y mira qué responderé al que me ha enviado.
14Entonces David dijo á Gad: En grande angustia estoy: ruego que caiga en la mano de Jehová, porque sus miseraciones son muchas, y que no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
15Y envió Jehová pestilencia á Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado: y murieron del pueblo, desde Dan hasta Beer-seba, setenta mil hombres.
16Y como el ángel extendió su mano sobre Jerusalem para destruirla, Jehová se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que destruía el pueblo: Basta ahora; detén tu mano. Entonces el ángel de Jehová estaba junto á la era de Arauna Jebuseo.
17Y David dijo á Jehová, cuando vió al ángel que hería al pueblo: Yo pequé, yo hice la maldad: ¿qué hicieron estas ovejas? Ruégote que tu mano se torne contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre.
18Y Gad vino á David aquel día, y díjole: Sube, y haz un altar á Jehová en la era de Arauna Jebuseo.
19Y subió David, conforme al dicho de Gad, que Jehová le había mandado.
20Y mirando Arauna, vió al rey y á sus siervos que pasaban á él. Saliendo entonces Arauna, inclinóse delante del rey hacia tierra.
21Y Arauna dijo: ¿Por qué viene mi señor el rey á su siervo? Y David respondió: Para comprar de ti la era, para edificar altar á Jehová, á fin de que la mortandad cese del pueblo.
22Y Arauna dijo á David: Tome y sacrifique mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere; he aquí bueyes para el holocausto; y trillos y otros pertrechos de bueyes para leña:
23Todo lo da como un rey Arauna al rey. Luego dijo Arauna al rey: Jehová tu Dios te sea propicio.
24Y el rey dijo á Arauna: No, sino por precio te lo compraré; porque no ofreceré á Jehová mi Dios holocaustos por nada. Entonces David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata.
25Y edificó allí David un altar á Jehová, y sacrificó holocaustos y pacíficos; y Jehová se aplacó con la tierra, y cesó la plaga de Israel.
King James Version
1And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
2For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
3And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
4Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
5And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:
6Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,
7And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.
8So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
10And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
11For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,
12Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
14And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
15So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.
16And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
17And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
18And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.
19And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.
20And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.
21And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
22And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
23All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.
24And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
World English Bible
1Again the LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, count Israel and Judah.”
2The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.”
3Joab said to the king, “Now may the LORD your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”
4Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.
5They passed over the Jordan and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer;
6then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon,

10David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people. David said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, the LORD, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”
11When David rose up in the morning, the LORD’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,
12“Go and speak to David, ‘The LORD says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
13So Gad came to David, and told him, saying, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”
14David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let us fall now into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into man’s hand.”
15So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.
16When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” The LORD’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.”
18Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
19David went up according to the saying of Gad, as the LORD commanded.
20Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
21Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
22Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.
23All this, O king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
24The king said to Araunah, “No, but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25David built an altar to the LORD there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.
