1Nun sagte Ahithophel zu Absalom: »Ich will mir 12000 Mann auswählen und mich noch in dieser Nacht aufmachen, um David zu verfolgen;
2ich werde ihn dann überfallen, während er noch ermattet und mutlos ist, und werde ihn in solchen Schrecken versetzen, daß die gesamte Mannschaft, die er bei sich hat, die Flucht ergreift und ich den König allein erschlagen kann.
3Dann will ich alles Volk zu dir zurückbringen, wie man eine junge Frau zu ihrem Gatten zurückholt. Du trachtest ja doch nur einem Manne nach dem Leben, während das ganze übrige Volk unversehrt bleiben soll.«
4Der Rat fand den Beifall Absaloms und aller Ältesten der Israeliten;
5dennoch befahl Absalom: »Man rufe noch den Arkiter Husai! wir wollen doch auch seine Ansicht hören!«
6Als nun Husai zu Absalom gekommen war, sagte dieser zu ihm: »So und so hat Ahithophel geraten; sollen wir seinen Vorschlag ausführen? Wenn nicht, so rede du!«
7Da antwortete Husai dem Absalom: »Diesmal ist der Rat, den Ahithophel erteilt hat, nicht gut.«
8Er fuhr dann fort: »Du weißt wohl, daß dein Vater und seine Leute Helden sind und voll wilden Mutes wie eine Bärin auf dem Felde, der man die Jungen geraubt hat. Außerdem ist dein Vater ein Kriegsmann, der seine Leute nicht Nachtruhe halten läßt.
9Gewiß hat er sich schon jetzt in irgendeiner Schlucht oder sonstwo versteckt. Sollten nun gleich im Anfang einige von unsern Leuten fallen, so wird jeder, der es hört, behaupten: ›Die Leute, die es mit Absalom halten, haben eine Niederlage erlitten!‹
10Da würde dann auch der Tapferste, der ein Herz wie ein Löwe hat, sicherlich den Mut sinken lassen; ganz Israel weiß ja, daß dein Vater ein Held ist und wie tapfer die Männer sind, die er bei sich hat.
11Ich rate vielmehr: Laß ganz Israel von Dan bis Beerseba bei dir sich versammeln, so zahlreich wie der Sand am Meer, und ziehe dann persönlich in ihrer Mitte ins Feld.
12Treffen wir ihn dann an irgendeinem Ort, wo er sich aufhält, so fallen wir über ihn her, wie der Tau auf den Erdboden fällt, und es soll von ihm und allen Männern, die er bei sich hat, auch nicht einer übrigbleiben!
13Zieht er sich aber in eine Stadt zurück, so soll ganz Israel Seile an die betreffende Stadt legen, und wir schleifen sie ins Tal hinunter, bis auch nicht ein Steinchen mehr dort zu finden ist.«
14Da erklärten Absalom und alle Israeliten: »Der Rat des Arkiters Husai ist besser als der Rat Ahithophels!« Der HERR hatte es nämlich so gefügt, daß der gute Rat Ahithophels verworfen wurde, weil der HERR Unheil über Absalom bringen wollte.
15Hierauf teilte Husai den Priestern Zadok und Abjathar mit: »So und so hat Ahithophel dem Absalom und den Ältesten der Israeliten geraten, und so und so habe ich geraten.
16Laßt also jetzt in aller Eile folgende Botschaft an David gelangen: ›Bleibe über Nacht nicht mehr in den Niederungen der Wüste (Juda), sondern setze auf jeden Fall (über den Jordan) hinüber, damit der König nicht mit allen Leuten, die er bei sich hat, vom Verderben ereilt wird.‹«
17Jonathan und Ahimaaz hatten aber ihren Standort bei der Quelle Rogel, und eine Magd mußte von Zeit zu Zeit hingehen und ihnen Nachricht bringen; dann gingen sie jedesmal hin und erstatteten dem König Bericht; denn sie durften sich nicht sehen lassen, daß sie in die Stadt hätten kommen können.
18Aber ein Knabe bemerkte sie und teilte es Absalom mit. Da entfernten die beiden sich eiligst und begaben sich in das haus eines Mannes zu Bachurim. Dieser hatte in seinem Hofe eine Zisterne, in die sie sich hinabließen;
19die Frau nahm dann eine Decke, breitete diese oben über die Zisterne aus und schüttete Grütze darüber, so daß man nichts bemerken konnte.
20Als nun die Leute Absaloms zu der Frau ins Haus kamen und fragten, wo Ahimaaz und Jonathan seien, antwortete ihnen die Frau: »Sie sind von hier nach dem Wasser weitergegangen.« Als jene sie nun trotz alles Suchens nicht fanden, kehrten sie nach Jerusalem zurück.
21Nach ihrem Weggang stiegen dann die beiden aus der Zisterne herauf, gingen weiter, erstatteten dem König David Bericht und sagten zu David: »Macht euch auf und setzt eilends über den Jordan! Denn so und so hat Ahithophel in bezug auf euch geraten.«
22Da machte sich David mit allen Leuten, die er bei sich hatte, auf den Weg, und sie setzten über den Jordan. Bis der Morgen tagte, befanden sich alle bis auf den letzten Mann auf der andern Seite des Jordans.
23Als nun Ahithophel sah, daß sein Rat nicht ausgeführt wurde, ließ er seinen Esel satteln und machte sich auf den Heimweg nach seinem Wohnort. Nachdem er dort sein Haus bestellt hatte, erhängte er sich; seine Leiche wurde dann im Begräbnis seines Vaters beigesetzt.
24David aber war bereits in Mahanaim angekommen, als Absalom mit allen Israeliten über den Jordan setzte.
25An Stelle Joabs hatte Absalom dem Amasa den Oberbefehl über das Heer übertragen. Dieser Amasa war der Sohn eines gewissen Jithra, eines Ismaeliten, der mit Abigail, der Tochter des Nahas, der Halbschwester der Zeruja, der Mutter Joabs, ein Verhältnis gehabt hatte.
26So lagerten sich denn die Israeliten unter Absalom in der Landschaft Gilead.
27Als aber David in Mahanaim angekommen war, hatten Sobi, der Sohn des Nahas, aus Rabba, (der Hauptstadt) der Ammoniter, und Machir, der Sohn Ammiels, aus Lodebar, und der Gileaditer Barsillai aus Rogelim
28Ruhebetten, Becken und irdenes Geschirr, dazu Weizen, Gerste, Mehl, geröstetes Korn, Bohnen, Linsen,
29Honig und Butter, Kleinvieh und Kuhkäse für David und seine Leute zur Nahrung gebracht; denn sie hatten gedacht: »Die Leute müssen in der Steppe hungrig, müde und durstig geworden sein.«

1ENTONCES Achitophel dijo á Absalom: Yo escogeré ahora doce mil hombres, y me levantaré, y seguiré á David esta noche;
2Y daré sobre él cuando él estará cansado y flaco de manos: lo atemorizaré, y todo el pueblo que está con él huirá, y heriré al rey solo.
3Así tornaré á todo el pueblo á ti: y cuando ellos hubieren vuelto, (pues aquel hombre es el que tú quieres) todo el pueblo estará en paz.
4Esta razón pareció bien á Absalom y á todos los ancianos de Israel.
5Y dijo Absalom: Llama también ahora á Husai Arachîta, para que asimismo oigamos lo que él dirá.
6Y como Husai vino á Absalom, hablóle Absalom, diciendo: Así ha dicho Achitophel; ¿seguiremos su consejo, ó no? Di tú.
7Entonces Husai dijo á Absalom: El consejo que ha dado esta vez Achitophel no es bueno.
8Y añadió Husai: Tú sabes que tu padre y los suyos son hombres valientes, y que están con amargura de ánimo, como la osa en el campo cuando le han quitado los hijos. Además, tu padre es hombre de guerra, y no tendrá la noche con el pueblo.
9He aquí él estará ahora escondido en alguna cueva, ó en otro lugar: y si al principio cayeren algunos de los tuyos, oirálo quien lo oyere, y dirá: El pueblo que sigue á Absalom ha sido derrotado.
10Así aun el hombre valiente, cuyo corazón sea como corazón de león, sin duda desmayará: porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es hombre valiente, y que los que están con él son esforzados.
11Aconsejo pues que todo Israel se junte á ti, desde Dan hasta Beer-seba, en multitud como la arena que está á la orilla de la mar, y que tú en persona vayas á la batalla.
12Entonces le acometeremos en cualquier lugar que pudiere hallarse, y daremos sobre él como cuando el rocío cae sobre la tierra, y ni uno dejaremos de él, y de todos los que con él están.
13Y si se recogiere en alguna ciudad, todos los de Israel traerán sogas á aquella ciudad, y la arrastraremos hasta el arroyo, que nunca más parezca piedra de ella.
14Entonces Absalom y todos los de Israel dijeron: El consejo de Husai Arachîta es mejor que el consejo de Achitophel. Porque había Jehová ordenado que el acertado consejo de Achitophel se frustrara, para que Jehová hiciese venir el mal sobre Absalom.
15Dijo luego Husai á Sadoc y á Abiathar sacerdotes: Así y así aconsejó Achitophel á Absalom y á los ancianos de Israel: y de esta manera aconsejé yo.
16Por tanto enviad inmediatamente, y dad aviso á David, diciendo: No quedes esta noche en los campos del desierto, sino pasa luego el Jordán, porque el rey no sea consumido, y todo el pueblo que con él está.
17Y Jonathán y Ahimaas estaban junto á la fuente de Rogel, porque no podían ellos mostrarse viniendo á la ciudad; fué por tanto una criada, y dióles el aviso: y ellos fueron, y noticiáronlo al rey David.
18Empero fueron vistos por un mozo, el cual dió cuenta á Absalom: sin embargo los dos se dieron priesa á caminar, y llegaron á casa de un hombre en Bahurim, que tenía un pozo en su patio, dentro del cual se metieron.
19Y tomando la mujer de la casa una manta, extendióla sobre la boca del pozo, y tendió sobre ella el grano trillado; y no se penetró el negocio.
20Llegando luego los criados de Absalom á la casa á la mujer, dijéronle: ¿Dónde están Ahimaas y Jonathán? Y la mujer les respondió: Ya han pasado el vado de las aguas. Y como ellos los buscaron y no los hallaron, volviéronse á Jerusalem.
21Y después que ellos se hubieron ido, estotros salieron del pozo, y fuéronse, y dieron aviso al rey David; y dijéronle: Levantaos y daos priesa á pasar las aguas, porque Achitophel ha dado tal consejo contra vosotros.
22Entonces David se levantó, y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, y pasaron el Jordán antes que amaneciese; ni siquiera faltó uno que no pasase el Jordán.
23Y Achitophel, viendo que no se había puesto por obra su consejo, enalbardó su asno, y levantóse, y fuése á su casa en su ciudad; y después de disponer acerca de su casa, ahorcóse y murió, y fué sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre.
24Y David llegó á Mahanaim, y Absalom pasó el Jordán con toda la gente de Israel.
25Y Absalom constituyó á Amasa sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab, el cual Amasa fué hijo de un varón de Israel llamado Itra, el cual había entrado á Abigail hija de Naas, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab.
26Y asentó campo Israel con Absalom en tierra de Galaad.
27Y luego que David llegó á Mahanaim, Sobi hijo de Naas de Rabba de los hijos de Ammon, y Machîr hijo de Ammiel de Lodebar, y Barzillai Galaadita de Rogelim,
28Trajeron á David y al pueblo que estaba con él, camas, y tazas, y vasijas de barro, y trigo, y cebada, y harina, y grano tostado, habas, lentejas, y garbanzos tostados,
29Miel, manteca, ovejas, y quesos de vacas, para que comiesen; porque dijeron: Aquel pueblo está hambriento, y cansado, y tendrá sed en el desierto.

1Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:
2And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:
3And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
4And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
5Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.
6And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.
7And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.
8For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.
9Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.
10And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.
11Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.
12So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
13Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.
14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.
15Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.
16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
18Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down.
19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known.
20And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
21And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.
22Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.
23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.
24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother.
26So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.
27And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,
28Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse,
29And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

1Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me now choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David tonight.
2I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him will flee. I will strike the king only,
3and I will bring back all the people to you. The man whom you seek is as if all returned. All the people shall be in peace.”
4The saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
5Then Absalom said, “Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let’s hear likewise what he says.”
6When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken like this. Shall we do what he says? If not, speak up.”
7Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given this time is not good.”
8Hushai said moreover, “You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are fierce in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.
9Behold, he is now hidden in some pit, or in some other place. It will happen, when some of them have fallen at the first, that whoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom!’

17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En Rogel; and a female servant used to go and report to them, and they went and told King David; for they couldn’t risk being seen coming into the city.
18But a boy saw them, and told Absalom. Then they both went away quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down there.
19The woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and spread out crushed grain on it; and nothing was known.
20Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” The woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook of water.” When they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
21After they had departed, they came up out of the well and went and told King David; and they said to David, “Arise and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you.”
22Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they passed over the Jordan. By the morning light there lacked not one of them who had not gone over the Jordan.
23When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, arose, and went home to his city, set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.
24Then David came to Mahanaim. Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25Absalom set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Ithra the Israelite, who went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.
26Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.
27When David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,
