1Et dans le temps qui suivit, mourut le Roi des Ammonites, et Hanoun, son fils, lui succéda sur le trône.
2Alors David dit : Je témoignerai à Hanoun, fils de Nahas, la même bonté que m'a témoignée son père. Et David lui envoya par ses serviteurs des consolations au sujet de son père. Et lorsque les serviteurs de David furent arrivés au pays des Ammonites,
3les chefs Ammonites dirent à Hanoun, leur maître : Est-ce pour rendre devant tes yeux honneur à ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs ? Son but n'est-il pas d'explorer la ville et d'en faire l'espionnage et le sac, quand il te délègue ses serviteurs ?
4Alors Hanoun arrêta les serviteurs de David et leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe et couper leurs habits jusqu'à mi-cuisses, puis les renvoya.
5Et le rapport en fut fait à David qui dépêcha des gens à leur rencontre parce que ces hommes avaient été indignement traités ; et le Roi dit : Restez à Jéricho, jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait recru ; alors revenez.
6Cependant les Ammonites voyant qu'ils étaient en mauvaise odeur auprès de David, dépêchèrent des émissaires et prirent à leur solde dans la Syrie de Beth-Rechob et la Syrie de Tsoba vingt mille hommes d'infanterie, et chez le Roi de Maacha mille hommes, et des hommes de Tob, douze mille.
7A cette nouvelle David mit en campagne Joab et toute l'armée, les guerriers.
8De leur côté les Ammonites firent une sortie et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée même de la porte, et les Syriens de Tsoba et de Rechob et les hommes de Tob et de Maacha seuls étaient dans les champs.
9Et Joab voyant devant et derrière lui un front d'attaque fit un choix dans toute l'élite d'Israël et forma sa ligne contre les Syriens,
10et il mit le reste de la troupe sous la conduite d'Abisaï, son frère, qui fit face aux Ammonites.
11Et il dit : Si les Syriens ont l'avantage sur moi, viens à mon secours, et si les Ammonites ont l'avantage sur toi, j'irai à ton secours.
12Courage et tenons ferme pour notre peuple et pour les cités de notre Dieu ; et que l'Éternel fasse ce qui sera bon à ses yeux !
13Ainsi s'avança Joab avec la troupe qui l'accompagnait, à l'attaque des Syriens, et devant lui ils prirent la fuite.
14Et les Ammonites voyant les Syriens en fuite, prirent eux-mêmes la fuite devant Abisaï et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab revint de chez les Ammonites et rentra dans Jérusalem.
15Et les Syriens se voyant battus par les Israélites firent un rassemblement général.
16Et Hadarézer dépêcha des messagers et fit mettre sur pied les Syriens de l'autre rive du Fleuve, et ils arrivèrent avec leurs forces ayant à leur tête Sobach, général d'armée de Hadarézer.
17Et David fut informé : aussitôt il réunit tout Israël et passa le Jourdain et gagna Helam, et les Syriens se rangèrent en bataille contre David et en vinrent aux mains avec lui.
18Mais les Syriens s'enfuirent devant Israël, et David massacra aux Syriens sept cents chars et quarante mille cavaliers et fit tomber sous ses coups Sobach, général de leur armée, qui mourut là.
19Et tous les rois vassaux d'Hadarézer se voyant battus par Israël firent leur paix avec Israël et ils lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens eurent peur de venir encore au secours des Ammonites.

1DESPUÉS de esto aconteció, que murió el rey de los hijos de Ammón: y reinó en lugar suyo Hanún su hijo.
2Y dijo David: Yo haré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Naas, como su padre la hizo conmigo. Y envió David sus siervos á consolarlo por su padre. Mas llegados los siervos de David á la tierra de los hijos de Ammón,
3Los príncipes de los hijos de Ammón dijeron á Hanún su señor: ¿Te parece que por honrar David á tu padre te ha enviado consoladores? ¿no ha enviado David sus siervos á ti por reconocer é inspeccionar la ciudad, para destruirla?
4Entonces Hanún tomó los siervos de David, y rapóles la mitad de la barba, y cortóles los vestidos por la mitad hasta las nalgas, y despachólos.
5Lo cual como fué hecho saber á David, envió á encontrarles, porque ellos estaban en extremo avergonzados; y el rey hizo decirles: Estaos en Jericó hasta que os vuelva á nacer la barba, y entonces regresaréis.
6Y viendo los hijos de Ammón que se habían hecho odiosos á David, enviaron los hijos de Ammón y tomaron á sueldo á los Siros de la casa de Rehob, y á los Siros de Soba, veinte mil hombres de á pie: y del rey de Maaca mil hombres, y de Is-tob doce mil hombres.
7Lo cual como oyó David, envió á Joab con todo el ejército de los valientes.
8Y saliendo los hijos de Ammón, ordenaron sus escuadrones á la entrada de la puerta: mas los Siros de Soba, y de Rehob, y de Is-tob, y de Maaca, estaban de por sí en el campo.
9Viendo pues Joab que había escuadrones delante y detrás de él, entresacó de todos los escogidos de Israel, y púsose en orden contra los Siros.
10Entregó luego lo que quedó del pueblo en mano de Abisai su hermano, y púsolo en orden para encontrar á los Ammonitas.
11Y dijo: Si los Siros me fueren superiores, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Ammón pudieren más que tú, yo te daré ayuda.
12Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios: y haga Jehová lo que bien le pareciere.
13Y acercóse Joab, y el pueblo que con él estaba, para pelear con los Siros; mas ellos huyeron delante de él.
14Entonces los hijos de Ammón, viendo que los Siros habían huído, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, y entráronse en la ciudad. Y volvió Joab de los hijos de Ammón, y vínose á Jerusalem.
15Mas viendo los Siros que habían caído delante de Israel, tornáronse á juntar.
16Y envió Hadad-ezer, y sacó los Siros que estaban de la otra parte del río, los cuales vinieron á Helam, llevando por jefe á Sobach general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.
17Y como fué dado aviso á David, juntó á todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino á Helam: y los Siros se pusieron en orden contra David, y pelearon con él.
18Mas los Siros huyeron delante de Israel: é hirió David de los Siros la gente de setecientos carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de á caballo: hirió también á Sobach general del ejército, y murió allí.
19Viendo pues todos los reyes que asistían á Hadad-ezer, como habían ellos sido derrotados delante de Israel, hicieron paz con Israel, y sirviéronle; y de allí adelante temieron los Siros de socorrer á los hijos de Ammón.

1And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
2Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.
7And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
13And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
18And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
19And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

1After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.
2David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
4So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6When the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.
7When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.
8The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
9Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians.
10The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
12Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him.”
13So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.
14When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
15When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.
17David was told that; and he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him.
18The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there.
19When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
