1Quando Oseias, filho de Elá, estava no terceiro ano do seu reinado em Israel, Ezequias, filho de Acaz, começou a reinar em Judá.
2Ele tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou por vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. Sua mãe se chamava Abi, filha de Zacarias.
3Ele fez o que era bom aos olhos do Senhor, conforme o que tinha feito o seu antepassado Davi.
4Ele retirou os altares idólatras do alto das colinas, quebrou em pedaços as colunas, derrubou os vergonhosos postes-ídolos e despedaçou a serpente de bronze que Moisés tinha feito, porque o povo de Israel vinha adorando essa serpente e queimava incenso a ela. Neustã foi o nome que deram a essa serpente.
5Ezequias tinha uma grande confiança no Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Na verdade, nenhum dos reis antes ou depois dele andou tão perto do Senhor quanto ele.
6Ele seguia o Senhor em tudo e obedecia cuidadosamente aos mandamentos que Deus tinha dado a Moisés.
7Por isso, o Senhor estava com ele, e o rei era bem-sucedido em tudo o que fazia. Ezequias rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e deixou de pagar impostos a ele.
8Ezequias venceu os filisteus, chegando até Gaza e seus arredores, destruindo cidades grandes e pequenas, inclusive a cidade fortificada.
9No quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias em Judá, o sétimo ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, em Israel, aconteceu que Salmaneser, rei da Assíria, atacou Israel e começou a cercar a cidade de Samaria.
10Três anos depois, no sexto ano do rei Ezequias em Judá e nono ano do rei Oseias em Israel, Samaria foi conquistada pelos inimigos.
11Foi nesse tempo que o rei da Assíria deportou os israelitas para a Assíria, e os fez morar na cidade de Hala, ao longo das margens do rio Habor, em Gozã e nas cidades dos medos.
12Isso aconteceu porque os israelitas não quiseram atender o Senhor, o seu Deus. Eles não cumpriram a aliança feita com Deus e desobedeceram às leis que lhes foram dadas por Moisés, o servo do Senhor.
13Mais tarde, no décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, cercou e tomou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá.
14O rei Ezequias mandou ao rei da Assíria que estava em Láquis esta mensagem: “Errei. Estou pronto a pagar tudo o que você exigir, contanto que se retire daqui”. O rei da Assíria exigiu de Ezequias, rei de Judá, dez toneladas e meia de prata e mil e cinquenta quilos de ouro.
15Para ajuntar toda essa quantia, Ezequias usou toda a prata que estava guardada no templo e nos cofres do palácio.
16E teve ainda de arrancar o ouro das portas do templo e dos batentes das portas que haviam sido cobertos com ouro, e entregou tudo ao rei da Assíria.
17Apesar disso, o rei da Assíria mandou, de Láquis, seu comandante do campo, seu principal tesoureiro e o chefe do seu estado-maior. Esses três foram com um grande exército e acamparam ao longo da estrada que fica ao lado do campo onde os tintureiros punham a roupa para branquear, perto do abastecimento de água do açude superior.
18Exigiram que o rei Ezequias fosse falar com eles. Mas em vez de ir, o rei mandou uma comissão formada dos seguintes homens: Eliaquim, administrador dos negócios reais; Sebna, secretário do rei; e Joá, o homem que escrevia a história do reino.
19Então o comandante do campo assírio mandou este recado ao rei Ezequias: “O grande rei da Assíria diz: ‘Em que você baseia sua confiança?
20Você precisa de mais do que simples promessas de auxílio antes de se revoltar contra mim. Mas qual dos seus aliados lhe dará alguma coisa mais do que palavras?
21O Egito? Se você se apoiar no Egito, vai descobrir que ele não passa de uma vara sem resistência, que se quebra sob o peso do seu corpo e ainda penetra na sua mão. O faraó, rei do Egito, não merece a mínima confiança!
22E se vocês me disserem: “Confiamos no Senhor, o nosso Deus, para nos livrar”, lembre-se que foram os altares desse Deus, que estavam nos altos dos montes, que você destruiu. Pois você diz a todos de Judá e Jerusalém: “Adorem diante do altar que está em Jerusalém!”
23“ ‘Eu vou lançar um desafio do meu senhor, o rei da Assíria: Eu darei a você dois mil cavalos, se você tiver dois mil homens para montar neles!
24Ora, com um exército assim, você não é ameaça nem mesmo para o oficial menos graduado que comanda um grupo no exército do meu senhor. Mesmo que o Egito forneça carros e cavaleiros a você, de nada adiantará.
25E acaso você pensa que viemos aqui por nossa própria conta? Não! Foi o próprio Senhor quem nos enviou e nos disse: “Vão e destruam esta nação!” ’ ”
26Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, Sebna e Joá disseram ao comandante do campo: “Por favor, fale na língua aramaica com os seus servos, porque entendemos essa língua. E não fale na língua hebraica, porque o povo que está sobre os muros pode ouvir o que vocês falam”.
27Mas o comandante assírio respondeu: “Por acaso o meu senhor me enviou para falar somente para o seu senhor e para vocês, e não para os que estão sentados sobre os muros? Pois eles também estão condenados com vocês a comer as suas próprias fezes e a beber a sua própria urina!”
28Então o chefe do estado-maior assírio gritou em língua hebraica para o povo que estava sobre os muros: “Ouçam o que diz o grande rei da Assíria:
29Não deixem que o rei Ezequias engane vocês. Ele nunca poderá salvar vocês do meu poder.
30Não deixem que engane o povo fazendo vocês confiarem no Senhor, quando diz: ‘Certamente o Senhor nos livrará. Esta cidade não será conquistada pelo rei da Assíria’ ”.
31“Não deem atenção ao rei Ezequias. Assim diz o rei da Assíria: Rendam-se! Vocês podem viver em paz aqui na sua própria terra, comendo dos seus próprios frutos e bebendo água dos seus próprios poços,
32até que eu leve vocês para outra terra igual a esta, com abundância de colheitas, cereais, terra de pão e de vinhas, terra de oliveiras e de mel. Escolham a vida e não a morte! Não deem atenção ao rei Ezequias, quando ele tenta convencer vocês, dizendo: ‘O Senhor nos vai livrar’ ”.
33“Vocês já viram o deus de alguma outra nação livrá-la das mãos do rei da Assíria?
34O que aconteceu aos deuses de Hamate, de Arpade, de Sefarvaim, de Hena e de Iva? Acaso eles livraram Samaria das minhas mãos?
35Qual o deus que alguma vez pôde livrar qualquer nação do meu poder? Diante disso, o que faz vocês pensarem que o Senhor poderá salvar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?”
36Porém o povo que estava sobre os muros ficou em silêncio, porque o rei lhes tinha ordenado: “Não falem nada”.
37Então, o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, e Sebna, secretário do rei, e Joá, filho de Asafe, historiador do reino, apresentaram-se ao rei Ezequias, com suas roupas rasgadas, e contaram a ele tudo o que o comandante assírio tinha dito.

1EN el tercer año de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, comenzó á reinar Ezechîas hijo de Achâz rey de Judá.
2Cuando comenzó á reinar era de veinticinco años, y reinó en Jerusalem veintinueve años. El nombre de su madre fué Abi hija de Zachârías.
3Hizo lo recto en ojos de Jehová, conforme á todas las cosas que había hecho David su padre.
4El quitó los altos, y quebró las imágenes, y taló los bosques, é hizo pedazos la serpiente de bronce que había hecho Moisés, porque hasta entonces le quemaban perfumes los hijos de Israel; y llamóle por nombre Nehustán.
5En Jehová Dios de Israel puso su esperanza: después ni antes de él no hubo otro como él en todos los reyes de Judá.
6Porque se llegó á Jehová, y no se apartó de él, sino que guardó los mandamientos que Jehová prescribió á Moisés.
7Y Jehová fué con él; y en todas las cosas á que salía prosperaba. El se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria, y no le sirvió.
8Hirió también á los Filisteos hasta Gaza y sus términos, desde las torres de las atalayas hasta la ciudad fortalecida.
9En el cuarto año del rey Ezechîas, que era el año séptimo de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, subió Salmanasar rey de los Asirios contra Samaria, y cercóla.
10Y tomáronla al cabo de tres años; esto es, en el sexto año de Ezechîas, el cual era el año nono de Oseas rey de Israel, fué Samaria tomada.
11Y el rey de Asiria traspuso á Israel á Asiria, y púsolos en Hala, y en Habor, junto al río de Gozán, y en las ciudades de los Medos:
12Por cuanto no habían atendido la voz de Jehová su Dios, antes habían quebrantado su pacto; y todas las cosas que Moisés siervo de Jehová había mandado, ni las habían escuchado, ni puesto por obra.
13Y á los catorce años del rey Ezechîas, subió Sennachêrib rey de Asiria contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
14Entonces Ezechîas rey de Judá envió á decir al rey de Asiria en Lachîs: Yo he pecado: vuélvete de mí, y llevaré todo lo que me impusieres. Y el rey de Asiria impuso á Ezechîas rey de Judá trescientos talentos de plata, y treinta talentos de oro.
15Dió por tanto Ezechîas toda la plata que fué hallada en la casa de Jehová, y en los tesoros de la casa real.
16Entonces descompuso Ezechîas las puertas del templo de Jehová, y los quiciales que el mismo rey Ezechîas había cubierto de oro, y diólo al rey de Asiria.
17Después el rey de Asiria envió al rey Ezechîas, desde Lachîs contra Jerusalem, á Thartán y á Rabsaris y á Rabsaces, con un grande ejército: y subieron, y vinieron á Jerusalem. Y habiendo subido, vinieron y pararon junto al conducto del estanque de arriba, que es en el camino de la heredad del batanero.
18Llamaron luego al rey, y salió á ellos Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
19Y díjoles Rabsaces: Decid ahora á Ezechîas: Así dice el gran rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esta en que tú estás?
20Dices, (por cierto palabras de labios): Consejo tengo y esfuerzo para la guerra. Mas ¿en qué confías, que te has rebelado contra mí?
21He aquí tú confías ahora en este bordón de caña cascada, en Egipto, en el que si alguno se apoyare, entrarále por la mano, y se le pasará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confían.
22Y si me decís: Nosotros confiamos en Jehová nuestro Dios: ¿no es aquél cuyos altos y altares ha quitado Ezechîas, y ha dicho á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis en Jerusalem?
23Por tanto, ahora yo te ruego que des rehenes á mi señor, el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú pudieres dar jinetes para ellos.
24¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán el menor de los siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y su gente de á caballo?
25Además, ¿he venido yo ahora sin Jehová á este lugar, para destruirlo? Jehová me ha dicho: Sube á esta tierra, y destrúyela.
26Entonces dijo Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, y Sebna y Joah, á Rabsaces: Ruégote que hables á tus siervos siriaco, porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no hables con nosotros judaico á oídos del pueblo que está sobre el muro.
27Y Rabsaces les dijo: ¿Hame enviado mi señor á ti y á tu señor para decir estas palabras, y no antes á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol, y beber el agua de sus pies con vosotros?
28Paróse luego Rabsaces, y clamó á gran voz en judaico, y habló, diciendo: Oid la palabra del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
29Así ha dicho el rey: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar de mi mano.
30Y no os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: De cierto nos librará Jehová, y esta ciudad no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria.
31No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí, y cada uno comerá de su vid, y de su higuera, y cada uno beberá las aguas de su pozo;
32Hasta que yo venga, y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas, tierra de olivas, de aceite, y de miel; y viviréis, y no moriréis. No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque os engaña cuando dice: Jehová nos librará.
33¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las gentes ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
34¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath, y de Arphad? ¿dónde el dios de Sepharvaim, de Hena, y de Hiva? ¿pudieron éstos librar á Samaria de mi mano?
35¿Qué dios de todos los dioses de las provincias ha librado á su provincia de mi mano, para que libre Jehová de mi mano á Jerusalem?
36Y el pueblo calló, que no le respondieron palabra: porque había mandamiento del rey, el cual había dicho: No le respondáis.
37Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna el escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas, rotos sus vestidos, y recitáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.
3And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
4He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.
5He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
6For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
7And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
8He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
9And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.
10And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
11And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
12Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
13Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
14And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
15And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house.
16At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
17And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.
18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
19And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
20Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
21Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
22But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
23Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
24How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
25Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
26Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
27But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
28Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:
29Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
30Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
31Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:
32Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
33Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
34Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
36But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
37Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.

1Now in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.
3He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, according to all that David his father had done.
4He removed the high places, broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because in those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.
5He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel, so that after him was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among them that were before him.
6For he joined with the LORD. He didn’t depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
7The LORD was with him. Wherever he went, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria, and didn’t serve him.

20You say (but they are but vain words), ‘There is counsel and strength for war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
21Now, behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt. If a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust on him.
22But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
23Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses if you are able on your part to set riders on them.

27But Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you, to speak these words? Hasn’t he sent me to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own urine with you?”
28Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.
29The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand.
30Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
31Don’t listen to Hezekiah.’ For the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and everyone of you eat from his own vine, and everyone from his own fig tree, and everyone drink water from his own cistern;
32until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and of honey, that you may live and not die. Don’t listen to Hezekiah when he persuades you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.”
33Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

36But the people stayed quiet, and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
37Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, came with Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him Rabshakeh’s words.
