1Fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt wurde Amazja König und neunundzwanzig Jahre regierte er zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter aber hieß Joaddan und stammte aus Jerusalem.
2Und er that, was Jahwe wohlgefiel, jedoch nicht mit ungeteiltem Herzen.
3Sobald er aber im Besitze der königlichen Macht war, ließ er seine Diener, die den König, seinen Vater, erschlagen hatten, töten.
4Ihre Kinder ließ er jedoch nicht hinrichten, sondern verfuhr nach dem Gebote Jahwes, das im Gesetz, im Buche Moses, geschrieben steht und so lautet: Es sollen nicht Väter um der Kinder willen und Kinder um der Väter willen sterben, sondern sollen ein jeder nur wegen seines eigenen Vergehens getötet werden dürfen.
5Und Amazja versammelte die Judäer und stellte sie familienweise auf, nach den Obersten über die Tausendschaften und den Obersten über die Hundertschaften von ganz Juda und Benjamin. Sodann musterte er sie von den Zwanzigjährigen an und darüber und fand, daß es 300000 auserlesene, Speer und Schild führende Krieger waren.
6Dazu dingte er aus Israel für hundert Talente Silbers 100000 tapfere Männer.
7Aber ein Mann Gottes kam zu ihm und sprach: O König! Das israelitische Heer darf nicht mir dir ziehen; denn Jahwe ist nicht mit Israel, mit allen Ephraimiten.
8Vielmehr ziehe du allein, gehe mutig an den Streit; Gott könnte dich sonst vor dem Feinde zu Falle bringen.
9Amazja erwiderte dem Manne Gottes: Was soll aber in betreff der hundert Talente geschehen, die ich der israelitischen Heerschar gegeben habe? Der Mann Gottes erwiderte: Jahwe kann dir weit mehr als das geben!
10Da sondere Amazja die Heerschar, die aus Ephraim zu ihm gekommen war, ab, damit sie wieder heimgingen. Da wurden diese sehr zornig auf die Judäer und kehrten in hellem Zorne heim.
11Amazja aber faßte Mut, führte sein Volk von dannen, zog ins Salzthal und schlug die Seïriten, zehntausend Mann.
12Zehntausend andere aber nahmen die Judäer lebendig gefangen; die führten sie auf die Spitze des Felsens und stürzten sie von der Spitze des Felsen herab, so daß sie insgesamt zerschellten.
13Die Glieder der Streifschar aber, die Amazja zurückgeschickt hatte, so daß sie nicht mit ihm in den Streit ziehen durfte, die fielen in die Städte der Judäer ein, von Samaria an bis Beth Horon, erschlugen dreitausend von ihnen und machten große Beute.
14Als aber Amazja nach dem Sieg über die Edomiter heimgekommen war, brachte er die Götter der Seïriten mit und stellte sie sich als Götter auf, und vor ihnen pflegte er fortan anzubeten und ihnen räucherte er.
15Da entbrannte der Zorn Jahwes wider Amazja, und er sandte einen Propheten zu ihm. Der sprach zu ihm: Warum hältst du dich an die Götter dieses Volks, die ihr eigenes Volk nicht aus deiner Gewalt erretten konnten?
16Als er aber so zu ihm redete, sprach jener zu ihm: Haben wir dich zum Ratgeber des Königs bestellt? Höre auf, sonst wird man dich schlagen! Da ließ der Prophet ab und sprach: Ich merke nun, daß Gott beschlossen hat, dich zu verderben, weil du so gehandelt hast und auf meinen Rat nicht hören willst!
17Und nachdem sich Amazja, der König von Juda, beraten, sandte er Boten an Joas, den Sohn Joahas', des Sohnes Jehus, den König von Israel, und ließ ihm sagen: Wohlan, wir wollen uns miteinander messen!
18Da ließ Joas, der König von Israel, Amazja, dem Könige von Juda, Folgendes entbieten: Die Distel auf dem Libanon sandte zur Ceder auf dem Libanon und ließ ihr sagen: Gieb deine Tochter meinem Sohne zum Weibe! Aber das Wild auf dem Libanon lief über die Distel und zertrat sie.
19Du denkst: Habe ich doch die Edomiter geschlagen! So reißt dich nun dein Hochmut fort, dich zu überheben. Bleibe nur daheim! Warum willst du das Unglück herausfordern, daß du zu Falle kommest und Juda mit dir?
20Aber Amazja wollte nicht hören; denn solches war von Gott verhängt, um sie in Feindesgewalt zu überliefern, weil sie sich an die Götter Edoms gehalten hatten.
21Da rückte Joas, der König von Israel, heran, und sie maßen sich miteinander, er und Amazja, der König von Juda, zu Bethsemes, welches zu Juda gehört.
22Und die Judäer wurden von den Israeliten geschlagen, so daß ein jeder in seine Heimat floh.
23Amazja aber, den König von Juda, den Sohn Jehoas', des Sohnes Jehoahas, nahm Joas, der König von Israel, zu Bethsemes gefangen und brachte ihn nach Jerusalem. Und er legte in die Mauer Jerusalems eine Bresche vom Ephraimthor an bis an das Eckthor, eine Strecke von vierhundert Ellen.
24Und er nahm alles Gold und Silber und alle Geräte, die sich im Tempel Gottes bei Obed Edom vorfanden, sowie die Schätze des königlichen Palastes und die Geiseln und kehrte nach Samaria zurück.
25Amazja aber, der Sohn Jehoas', der König von Juda, lebte nach dem Tode Joas', des Sohnes Joahas', des Königs von Israel, noch fünfzehn Jahre.
26Die übrige Geschichte Amazjas aber, die frühere und die spätere, findet sich ja aufgezeichnet im Buche der Könige von Juda und Israel.
27Und von der Zeit an, wo Amazja von Jahwe abtrünnig geworden war, zettelten sie zu Jerusalem eine Verschwörung gegen ihn an. Da floh er nach Lachis; aber man sandte hinter ihm drein nach Lachis und ließ ihn daselbst ermorden.
28Sodann hob man ihn auf den Wagen und begrub ihn zu Jerusalem bei seinen Vätern in der Stadt Davids.

1DE VEINTICINCO años era Amasías cuando comenzó á reinar, y veintinueve años reinó en Jerusalem: el nombre de su madre fué Joaddan, de Jerusalem.
2Hizo él lo recto en los ojos de Jehová aunque no de perfecto corazón.
3Y luego que fué confirmado en el reino, mató á sus siervos que habían muerto al rey su padre;
4Mas no mató á los hijos de ellos, según lo que está escrito en la ley en el libro de Moisés, donde Jehová mandó, diciendo: No morirán los padres por los hijos, ni los hijos por los padres; mas cada uno morirá por su pecado.
5Juntó luego Amasías á Judá, y con arreglo á las familias púsoles tribunos y centuriones por todo Judá y Benjamín; y tomólos por lista de veinte años arriba, y fueron hallados en ellos trescientos mil escogidos para salir á la guerra, que tenían lanza y escudo.
6Y de Israel tomó á sueldo cien mil hombres valientes, por cien talentos de plata.
7Mas un varón de Dios vino á él, diciéndole: Rey, no vaya contigo el ejército de Israel; porque Jehová no es con Israel, ni con todos los hijos de Ephraim.
8Pero si tú vas, si lo haces, y te esfuerzas para pelear, Dios te hará caer delante de los enemigos; porque en Dios está la fortaleza, ó para ayudar, ó para derribar.
9Y Amasías dijo al varón de Dios: ¿Qué pues se hará de cien talentos que he dado al ejército de Israel? Y el varón de Dios respondió: De Jehová es darte mucho más que esto.
10Entonces Amasías apartó el escuadrón de la gente que había venido á él de Ephraim, para que se fuesen á sus casas: y ellos se enojaron grandemente contra Judá, y volviéronse á sus casas encolerizados.
11Esforzándose entonces Amasías, sacó su pueblo, y vino al valle de la Sal: é hirió de los hijos de Seir diez mil.
12Y los hijos de Judá tomaron vivos otros diez mil, los cuales llevaron á la cumbre de un peñasco, y de allí los despeñaron, y todos se hicieron pedazos.
13Empero los del escuadrón que Amasías había despedido, porque no fuesen con él á la guerra, derramáronse sobre las ciudades de Judá, desde Samaria hasta Beth-oron, é hirieron de ellos tres mil, y tomaron un grande despojo.
14Regresando luego Amasías de la matanza de los Idumeos, trajo también consigo los dioses de los hijos de Seir, y púsoselos para sí por dioses, y encorvóse delante de ellos, y quemóles perfumes.
15Encendióse por tanto el furor de Jehová contra Amasías, y envió á él un profeta, que le dijo: ¿Por qué has buscado los dioses de gente, que no libraron á su pueblo de tus manos?
16Y hablándole el profeta estas cosas, él le respondió: ¿Hante puesto á ti por consejero del rey? Déjate de eso: ¿por qué quieres que te maten? Y al cesar, el profeta dijo luego: Yo sé que Dios ha acordado destruirte, porque has hecho esto, y no obedeciste á mi consejo.
17Y Amasías rey de Judá, habido su consejo, envió á decir á Joas, hijo de Joachâz hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel: Ven, y veámonos cara á cara.
18Entonces Joas rey de Israel envió á decir á Amasías rey de Judá: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano, envió al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: Da tu hija á mi hijo por mujer. Y he aquí que las bestias fieras que estaban en el Líbano, pasaron, y hollaron el cardo.
19Tú dices: He aquí he herido á Edom; y tu corazón se enaltece para gloriarte: ahora estáte en tu casa; ¿para qué te entrometes en mal, para caer tú y Judá contigo?
20Mas Amasías no quiso oir; porque estaba de Dios, que los quería entregar en manos de sus enemigos, por cuanto habían buscado los dioses de Edom.
21Subió pues Joas rey de Israel, y viéronse cara á cara él y Amasías rey de Judá, en Beth-semes, la cual es de Judá.
22Pero cayó Judá delante de Israel, y huyó cada uno á su estancia.
23Y Joas rey de Israel prendió en Beth-semes á Amasías rey de Judá, hijo de Joas hijo de Joachâz, y llevólo á Jerusalem: y derribó el muro de Jerusalem desde la puerta de Ephraim hasta la puerta del ángulo, cuatrocientos codos.
24Asimismo tomó todo el oro y plata, y todos los vasos que se hallaron en la casa de Dios en casa de Obed-edom, y los tesoros de la casa del rey, y los hijos de los príncipes, y volvióse á Samaria.
25Y vivió Amasías hijo de Joas, rey de Judá, quince años después de la muerte de Joas hijo de Joachâz rey de Israel.
26Lo demás de los hechos de Amasías, primeros y postreros, ¿no está escrito en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel?
27Desde aquel tiempo que Amasías se apartó de Jehová, maquinaron contra él conjuración en Jerusalem; y habiendo él huído á Lachîs, enviaron tras él á Lachîs, y allá lo mataron;
28Y trajéronlo en caballos, y sepultáronlo con sus padres en la ciudad de Judá.

1Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
3Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
4But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
5Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
7But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
8But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
9And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
10Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.
12And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
13But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
14Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
15Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
16And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
17Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
18And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.
19Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
20But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
21So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
22And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
23And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
24And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
25And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
26Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
27Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
28And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

5Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together and ordered them according to their fathers’ houses, under captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, even all Judah and Benjamin. He counted them from twenty years old and upward, and found that there were three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go out to war, who could handle spear and shield.
6He also hired one hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for one hundred talents of silver.
7A man of God came to him, saying, “O king, don’t let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with all the children of Ephraim.
8But if you will go, take action, and be strong for the battle. God will overthrow you before the enemy; for God has power to help, and to overthrow.”
9Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
10Then Amaziah separated them, the army that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again. Therefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in fierce anger.
11Amaziah took courage, and led his people out and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck ten thousand of the children of Seir.
12The children of Judah carried away ten thousand alive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and threw them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were broken in pieces.
13But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell on the cities of Judah from Samaria even to Beth Horon, and struck of them three thousand, and took much plunder.
14Now after Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them and burned incense to them.
15Therefore the LORD’s anger burned against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which have not delivered their own people out of your hand?”
16As he talked with him, the king said to him, “Have we made you one of the king’s counselors? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” Then the prophet stopped, and said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
17Then Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come! Let’s look one another in the face.”
18Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as his wife. Then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle.
19You say to yourself that you have struck Edom; and your heart lifts you up to boast. Now stay at home. Why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall, even you and Judah with you?’”
20But Amaziah would not listen; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.
21So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
22Judah was defeated by Israel; so every man fled to his tent.
23Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth Shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
