1Im achtzehnten Jahre (der Regierung) des Königs Jerobeam wurde Abia König über Juda.
2Er regierte drei Jahre in Jerusalem; seine Mutter hieß Michaja und war eine Tochter Uriels von Gibea. Es herrschte aber Krieg zwischen Abia und Jerobeam.
3Und Abia eröffnete den Kampf mit einem kriegstüchtigen Heere von 400000 auserlesenen Kriegern, während Jerobeam 800000 Mann auserlesener Kerntruppen gegen ihn ins Feld stellte.
4Da trat Abia oben auf den Berg Zemaraim, der im Berglande Ephraim liegt, und rief: »Hört mich an, Jerobeam und ihr Israeliten alle!
5Solltet ihr wirklich nicht wissen, daß der HERR, der Gott Israels, das Königtum über Israel dem David auf ewig verliehen hat, ihm und seinen Nachkommen, und zwar auf Grund eines Salzbundes?
6Aber Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, ein Untertan Salomos, des Sohnes Davids, ist aufgetreten und hat sich gegen seinen Herrn empört;
7und leichtfertige Männer, nichtswürdige Leute, haben sich um ihn geschart und die Oberhand über Rehabeam, den Sohn Salomos, gewonnen; denn Rehabeam war noch jung und unselbständig und zu schwach, um sich ihrem Einfluß zu entziehen.
8Und nun meint ihr dem Königtum des HERRN, das im Besitz der Nachkommen Davids ist, entgegentreten zu können, weil ihr ein großer Haufe seid und ihr die goldenen Stierbilder bei euch habt, die Jerobeam euch zu Göttern gemacht hat!
9Habt ihr nicht die Priester des HERRN, die Nachkommen Aarons, und die Leviten vertrieben und euch eigene Priester gemacht wie die Heidenvölker? Wer irgend mit einem jungen Stiere und sieben Widdern gekommen ist, um sich für das Priestertum weihen zu lassen, der ist von euch zum Priester der Nichtgötter (oder Götzen) gemacht worden.
10Unser Gott dagegen ist der HERR, und wir sind nicht von ihm abgefallen; und als Priester dienen dem HERRN die Nachkommen Aarons, und die Leviten verrichten ihre Amtsgeschäfte;
11sie bringen dem HERRN an jedem Morgen und jedem Abend Brandopfer und wohlriechendes Räucherwerk dar und legen die Schaubrote auf dem Tische von reinem Gold aus und zünden den goldenen Leuchter mit seinen Lampen an jedem Abend an; denn wir beobachten die Vorschriften des HERRN, unsers Gottes, genau, während ihr ihn verlassen habt.
12Bedenkt wohl: mit uns ist Gott, der an unserer Spitze steht, dazu seine Priester mit den Lärmtrompeten, um sie gegen euch erschallen zu lassen! O ihr Israeliten! Kämpft nicht gegen den HERRN, den Gott eurer Väter, denn damit werdet ihr kein Glück haben!«
13Jerobeam aber hatte die im Hinterhalt liegenden Mannschaften eine Schwenkung machen lassen, damit sie ihnen in den Rücken kämen; und so standen sie einesteils vorn den Judäern gegenüber, während andernteils die Mannschaften des Hinterhalts sich in ihrem Rücken befanden.
14Als daher die Judäer sich umwandten, sahen sie sich von vorn und von hinten angegriffen. Da schrien sie zum HERRN, und die Priester stießen in die Trompeten,
15und die Judäer erhoben das Kriegsgeschrei; und als sie das getan hatten, ließ Gott Jerobeam und ganz Israel die Flucht vor Abia und den Judäern ergreifen.
16Als nun die Israeliten vor den Judäern flohen, gab Gott sie ihnen preis,
17so daß Abia und seine Leute ein furchtbares Blutbad unter ihnen anrichteten und von den Israeliten 500000 Mann auserlesener Mannschaften erschlagen liegen blieben.
18So wurde damals die Macht der Israeliten gebrochen, während die Judäer die Oberhand gewannen, weil sie ihr Vertrauen auf den HERRN, den Gott ihrer Väter, gesetzt hatten.
19Abia verfolgte dann Jerobeam und nahm ihm mehrere Städte weg, nämlich Bethel nebst den zugehörigen Ortschaften, Jesana nebst den zugehörigen Ortschaften und Ephron nebst den zugehörigen Ortschaften.
20Jerobeam aber kam, solange Abia lebte, nicht wieder zu Kräften, und der HERR ließ ihn eines plötzlichen Todes sterben.
21Abia aber wurde mächtig; er nahm sich vierzehn Frauen, die ihm zweiundzwanzig Söhne und sechzehn Töchter gebaren.
22Die übrige Geschichte Abias aber, seine Taten und seine Reden, finden sich aufgezeichnet in dem erbaulichen Geschichtswerk des Propheten Iddo. –
23Als Abia sich aber zu seinen Vätern gelegt und man ihn in der Davidsstadt begraben hatte, folgte ihm sein Sohn Asa auf dem Throne nach; unter dessen Regierung erfreute das Land sich zehn Jahre lang der Ruhe.

1A LOS dieciocho años del rey Jeroboam, reinó Abías sobre Judá.
2Y reinó tres años en Jerusalem. El nombre de su madre fué Michâía hija de Uriel de Gabaa. Y hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam.
3Entonces ordenó Abías batalla con un ejército de cuatrocientos mil hombres de guerra valerosos y escogidos: y Jeroboam ordenó batalla contra él con ochocientos mil hombres escogidos, fuertes y valerosos.
4Y levantóse Abías sobre el monte de Semaraim, que es en los montes de Ephraim, y dijo: Oidme, Jeroboam y todo Israel.
5¿No sabéis vosotros, que Jehová Dios de Israel dió el reino á David sobre Israel para siempre, á él y á sus hijos en alianza de sal?
6Pero Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, siervo de Salomón hijo de David, se levantó y rebeló contra su señor.
7Y se allegaron á él hombres vanos, hijos de iniquidad, y pudieron más que Roboam hijo de Salomón, porque Roboam era mozo y tierno de corazón, y no se defendió de ellos.
8Y ahora vosotros tratáis de fortificaros contra el reino de Jehová en mano de los hijos de David, porque sois muchos, y tenéis con vosotros los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os hizo por dioses.
9¿No echasteis vosotros á los sacerdotes de Jehová, á los hijos de Aarón, y á los Levitas, y os habéis hecho sacerdotes á la manera de los pueblos de otras tierras, para que cualquiera venga á consagrarse con un becerro y siete carneros, y así sea sacerdote de los que no son dioses?
10Mas en cuanto á nosotros, Jehová es nuestro Dios, y no le hemos dejado: y los sacerdotes que ministran á Jehová son los hijos de Aarón, y los Levitas en la obra;
11Los cuales queman á Jehová los holocaustos cada mañana y cada tarde, y los perfumes aromáticos; y ponen los panes sobre la mesa limpia, y el candelero de oro con sus candilejas para que ardan cada tarde: porque nosotros guardamos la ordenanza de Jehová nuestro Dios; mas vosotros le habéis dejado.
12Y he aquí Dios está con nosotros por cabeza, y sus sacerdotes con las trompetas del júbilo para que suenen contra vosotros. Oh hijos de Israel, no peleéis contra Jehová el Dios de vuestros padres, porque no os sucederá bien.
13Pero Jeroboam hizo girar una emboscada para venir á ellos por la espalda: y estando así delante de ellos, la emboscada estaba á espaldas de Judá.
14Y como miró Judá, he aquí que tenía batalla delante y á las espaldas; por lo que clamaron á Jehová, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas.
15Entonces los de Judá alzaron grita; y así que ellos alzaron grita, Dios desbarató á Jeroboam y á todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá:
16Y huyeron los hijos de Israel delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos.
17Y Abías y su gente hacían en ellos gran mortandad; y cayeron heridos de Israel quinientos mil hombres escogidos.
18Así fueron humillados los hijos de Israel en aquel tiempo: mas los hijos de Judá se fortificaron, porque se apoyaban en Jehová el Dios de sus padres.
19Y siguió Abías á Jeroboam, y tomóle algunas ciudades, á Beth-el con sus aldeas, á Jesana con sus aldeas, y á Ephraim con sus aldeas.
20Y nunca más tuvo Jeroboam poderío en los días de Abías: é hirióle Jehová, y murió.
21Empero se fortificó Abías; y tomó catorce mujeres, y engendró veintidós hijos, y dieciséis hijas.
22Lo demás de los hechos de Abías, sus caminos y sus negocios, está escrito en la historia de Iddo profeta.

1Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.
2He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
3And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.
4And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;
5Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
6Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.
7And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.
8And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
9Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
10But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:
11And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him.
12And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
13But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
14And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
15Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand.
17And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
18Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.
19And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.
20Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
21But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
22And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

8“Now you intend to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David. You are a great multitude, and the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods are with you.
9Haven’t you driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves according to the ways of the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may be a priest of those who are no gods.
10“But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests serving the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work.
11They burn to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense. They also set the show bread in order on the pure table, and care for the gold lamp stand with its lamps, to burn every evening; for we keep the instruction of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him.
12Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, don’t fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for you will not prosper.”
13But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them.
14When Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
