17Certo dia, Saul disse a Davi: “Estou pronto a lhe dar minha filha mais velha, Merabe, por esposa. Mas primeiro você deve provar que é um soldado bravo, lutando nas batalhas do Senhor”. Porque Saul pensava consigo mesmo: “Eu o mandarei lutar contra os filisteus e deixarei que eles o matem em vez de eu mesmo matá-lo”.

17And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’s battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
