1Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Mich hat Jahwe beauftragt, dich zum König über sein Volk Israel zu salben; so gehorche nun dem Befehle Jahwes.
2So spricht Jahwe der Heerscharen: Ich bin entschlossen, zu anden, was Amalek Israel angethan hat, indem er sich ihm in den Weg stellte, als er aus Ägypten heraufzog.
3So ziehe denn hin und schlage Amalek und vollstrecke an ihm den Bann und an allem, was ihm gehört, und schone ihn nicht, sondern laß sterben Männer wie Weiber, Knaben wie Säuglinge, Rinder wie Schafe, Kamele wie Esel!
4Sa bot Saul das Volk auf. Und er musterte sie in Telam: 200000 Fußgänger und 10000 Judäer.
5Sodann rückte Saul vor die Haupstadt Amaleks und legte einen Hinterhalt in das Bachthal.
6Aber zu den Kenitern sprach Saul: Auf! Zieht euch zurück! Geht weg aus dem Bereiche der Amalekiter, damit ich dich nicht mit ihnen weggraffe, während du dich doch allen Israeliten freundlich erwiesen hast, als sie aus Ägypten heraufzogen. Da zog sich Kain zurück aus dem Bereiche Amaleks.
7Saul aber schlug Amalek von Telam an bis gegen Sur hin, das östlich von Ägypten liegt.
8Agag, den König von Amalek, nahm er lebendig gefangen, das ganze Kriegsvolk aber hieb er in blutigem Kampf zusammen;
9jedoch schonten Saul und das Volk Agag und das Beste der Schafe und Rinder, die feisten und gemästeten Tiere, und überhaupt alles Wertvolle und mochten nicht den Bann an ihm vollstrecken; nur was vom Vieh wertlos und gering war, an dem vollstreckten sie den Bann.
10Da erging Jahwes Wort an Samuel also:
11Es reut mich, daß ich Saul zum König gemacht habe, denn er hat sich von mir abgewandt und meine Befehle nicht vollzogen. Das that Samuel wehe, und er flehte die ganze Nacht zu Jahwe.
12Frühmorgens aber ging Samuel Saul entgegen. Da wurde Samuel gemeldet: Saul ist heimgekommen nach Karmel, dort hat er sich ein Denkmal errichtet; dann hat er sich gewandt und ist weitergezogen hinab ins Gilgal.
13Als nun Samuel mit Saul zusammentraf, sprach Saul zu ihm: Mögest du von Jahwe gesegnet sein! Ich habe Jahwes Befehl vollzogen.
14Samuel erwiderte: Was bedeutet aber dieses Blöken von Schafen, das zu meinen Ohren dringt, und das Brüllen von Rindern, das ich höre?
15Saul antwortete: Von den Amalekitern haben sie sie heimgebracht, weil das Volk das Beste der Schafe und Rinder verschohnt hat, um sie Jahwe, deinem Gotte zu opfern; an dem Übrigen haben wir den Bann vollstreckt.
16Da sprach Samuel zu Saul: Halt ein, daß ich dir kund thue, was Jahwe diese Nacht mit mir geredet hat! Er erwiderte: Rede!
17Samuel sprach: Nicht wahr, trotzdem du dir selbst klein vorkommen mußt, bist du doch das Haupt der Stämme Israels: denn Jahwe salbte dich zum König über Israel.
18Dazu hat Jahwe dich ausziehen heißen, und dir geboten: Gehe hin und vollstrecke an den Frevlern, an Amalek, den Bann und kämpfe gegen sie, bis du sie vernichtet hast!
19Warum hast du nun dem Befehle Jahwes nicht gehorcht, sondern dich auf die Beute gestürzt und gethan, was Jahwe mißfällig war?
20Saul antwortete Samuel: Ich habe ja dem Befehle Jahwes gehorcht: den Zug, zu dem Jahwe mich aussandte, habe ich unternommen und den Amalekiterkönig Agag habe ich mitgebracht und an Amalek habe ich den Bann vollstreckt;
21aber das Volk hat Schafe und Rinder von der Beute weggenommen, das Beste des dem Banne Geweihtem, um es Jahwe, deinem Gott, im Gilgal zu opfern.
22Da rief Samuel: Hat denn Jahwe an brandopfern und Schlachtopfern dieselbe freude, wie am Gehorsam gegen Jahwes Befehl? Nein, Gehorsam ist besser, als Opfer, und Hören mehr wert, als Fett von Widdern;
23denn Widerstreben ist so schlimm, wie Wahrsagerei-Sünde, und Eigensinn ist so schlimm, wie Abgötterei und Teraphim! Weil du den Befehl Jahwes gering geachtet hast, so hat auch er dich zu gering geachtet für das Königtum!
24Saul erwiderte Samuel: Ich habe gesündigt, indem ich Jahwes Befehl und deine Anordnungen übertreten habe; aber ich fürchtete mich vor dem Volk und so gab ich ihrer Forderung nach;
25aber jetzt vergib mir meine Sünde und kehre mit mir um, daß ich mich vor Jahwe niederwerfe!
26Samuel entgegnete Saul: Ich kehre nicht mit dir um: weil du den Befehl Jahwes gering geachtet hast, so hat Jahwe dich zu gering dazu geachtet, König über Israel zu sein.
27Als sich nun Samuel zum Gehen wandte, da erfaßt jener den Zipfel seines Mantels, aber dieser riß ab.
28Da sprach Samuel zu ihm: Abgerissen hat Jahwe heute das Königtum über Israel von dir und hat es einem anderen gegeben, der besser ist als du!
29Dazu lügt der Ruhm Israels nicht und empfindet keine Reue, den er ist nicht ein Mensch, daß er reue empfände!
30Er erwiderte: Ich habe ja gesündigt - aber erweise mir jetzt wenigstens vor den Augen der Vornehmen meines Volks und vor den Augen Israels die Ehre, daß du mit mir umkehrst, damit ich mich vor Jahwe, deinem Gotte, niederwerfe!
31Da kehrte Samuel um und folgte Saul, und Saul warf sich vor Jahwe nieder.
32Hierauf gebot Samuel: Man bringe den Amalekiterkönig Agag vor mich! Heiter schritt Agag auf ihn los; dabei rief Agag aus: Ja, nun ist des Todes Bitterkeit gewichen!
33Samuel sprach: Wie dein Schwert Frauen der Kinder beraubt hat, so soll deine Mutter wie keine andere der Frauen der Kinder beraubtt sein! Damit hieb Samuel Agag in Stücke vor Jahwe im Gilgal.
34Dann begab sich Samuel nach Rama, und Saul ging heim nach Gibea Sauls hinauf.
35Samuel aber sah Saul bis an seinen Todestag nicht wieder, denn Samuel trauerte um Saul; aber Jahwe hatte es bereut, daß er Saul zum König über Israel gemacht hatte.

1Y SAMUEL dijo á Saúl: Jehová me envió á que te ungiese por rey sobre su pueblo Israel: oye pues la voz de las palabras de Jehová.
2Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Acuérdome de lo que hizo Amalec á Israel; que se le opuso en el camino, cuando subía de Egipto.
3Ve pues, y hiere á Amalec, y destruiréis en él todo lo que tuviere: y no te apiades de él: mata hombres y mujeres, niños y mamantes, vacas y ovejas, camellos y asnos.
4Saúl pues juntó el pueblo, y reconociólos en Telaim, doscientos mil de á pie, y diez mil hombres de Judá.
5Y viniendo Saúl á la ciudad de Amalec, puso emboscada en el valle.
6Y dijo Saúl al Cineo: Idos, apartaos, y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no te destruya juntamente con él: pues que tú hiciste misericordia con todos los hijos de Israel, cuando subían de Egipto. Apartóse pues el Cineo de entre los de Amalec.
7Y Saúl hirió á Amalec, desde Havila hasta llegar á Shur, que está á la frontera de Egipto.
8Y tomó vivo á Agag rey de Amalec, mas á todo el pueblo mató á filo de espada.
9Y Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron á Agag, y á lo mejor de las ovejas, y al ganado mayor, á los gruesos y á los carneros, y á todo lo bueno: que no lo quisieron destruir: mas todo lo que era vil y flaco destruyeron.
10Y fué palabra de Jehová á Samuel, diciendo:
11Pésame de haber puesto por rey á Saúl, porque se ha vuelto de en pos de mí, y no ha cumplido mis palabras. Y apesadumbróse Samuel, y clamó á Jehová toda aquella noche.
12Madrugó luego Samuel para ir á encontrar á Saúl por la mañana; y fué dado aviso á Samuel, diciendo: Saúl ha venido al Carmel, y he aquí él se ha levantado un trofeo, y después volviendo, ha pasado y descendido á Gilgal.
13Vino pues Samuel á Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová.
14Samuel entonces dijo: ¿Pues qué balido de ganados y bramido de bueyes es este que yo oigo con mis oídos?
15Y Saúl respondió: De Amalec los han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó á lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas á Jehová tu Dios; pero lo demás lo destruimos.
16Entonces dijo Samuel á Saúl: Déjame declararte lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche. Y él le respondió: Di.
17Y dijo Samuel: Siendo tú pequeño en tus ojos ¿no has sido hecho cabeza á las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido por rey sobre Israel?
18Y envióte Jehová en jornada, y dijo: Ve, y destruye los pecadores de Amalec, y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes.
19¿Por qué pues no has oído la voz de Jehová, sino que vuelto al despojo, has hecho lo malo en los ojos de Jehová?
20Y Saúl respondió á Samuel: Antes he oído la voz de Jehová, y fuí á la jornada que Jehová me envió, y he traído á Agag rey de Amalec, y he destruído á los Amalecitas:
21Mas el pueblo tomó del despojo ovejas y vacas, las primicias del anatema, para sacrificarlas á Jehová tu Dios en Gilgal.
22Y Samuel dijo: ¿Tiene Jehová tanto contentamiento con los holocaustos y víctimas, como en obedecer á las palabras de Jehová? Ciertamente el obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios; y el prestar atención que el sebo de los carneros:
23Porque como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión, y como ídolos é idolatría el infringir. Por cuanto tú desechaste la palabra de Jehová, él también te ha desechado para que no seas rey.
24Entonces Saúl dijo á Samuel: Yo he pecado; que he quebrantado el dicho de Jehová y tus palabras: porque temí al pueblo, consentí á la voz de ellos. Perdona pues ahora mi pecado,
25Y vuelve conmigo para que adore á Jehová.
26Y Samuel respondió á Saúl: No volveré contigo; porque desechaste la palabra de Jehová, y Jehová te ha desechado para que no seas rey sobre Israel.
27Y volviéndose Samuel para irse, él echó mano de la orla de su capa, y desgarróse.
28Entonces Samuel le dijo: Jehová ha desgarrado hoy de ti el reino de Israel, y lo ha dado á tu prójimo mejor que tú.
29Y también el Vencedor de Israel no mentirá, ni se arrepentirá: porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta.
30Y él dijo: Yo he pecado: mas ruégote que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo, y delante de Israel; y vuelve conmigo para que adore á Jehová tu Dios.
31Y volvió Samuel tras Saúl, y adoró Saúl á Jehová.
32Después dijo Samuel: Traedme á Agag rey de Amalec. Y Agag vino á él delicadamente. Y dijo Agag: Ciertamente se pasó la amargura de la muerte.
33Y Samuel dijo: Como tu espada dejó las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre será sin hijo entre las mujeres. Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos á Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal.
34Fuése luego Samuel á Rama, y Saúl subió á su casa en Gabaa de Saúl.
35Y nunca después vió Samuel á Saúl en toda su vida: y Samuel lloraba á Saúl: mas Jehová se había arrepentido de haber puesto á Saúl por rey sobre Israel.

1Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
2Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
6And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.
8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
11It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
12And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
14And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
18And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
22And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
24And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.
26And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
27And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
28And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
31So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
32Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
World English Bible
1Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the LORD’s words.
2The LORD of Armies says, ‘I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up out of Egypt.
3Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
4Saul summoned the people, and counted them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen and ten thousand men of Judah.
5Saul came to the city of Amalek, and set an ambush in the valley.
6Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.
8He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, of the cattle, of the fat calves, of the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10Then the LORD’s word came to Samuel, saying,
11“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night.
12Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”
13Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD.”
14Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”
15Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to the LORD your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”
16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”
17Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel;
18and the LORD sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’
19Why then didn’t you obey the LORD’s voice, but took the plunder, and did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight?”
20Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the LORD’s voice, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21But the people took of the plunder, sheep and cattle, the best of the devoted things, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.”
22Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the LORD’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the LORD’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”
24Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.

26Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the LORD’s word, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27As Samuel turned around to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
28Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.
29Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.”
30Then he said, “I have sinned; yet please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship the LORD your God.”
31So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped the LORD.
32Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Then Samuel cut Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. The LORD grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.
