1Cependant Ben-Ader rassembla toute son armée, partit et assiégea Samarie ; il avait avec lui trente-deux rois, toute sa cavalerie et tous ses chars. Et ils se mirent en campagne ; ils assiégèrent Samarie, et ils donnèrent l'assaut à ses remparts.
2Puis, le roi de Syrie envoya dans la ville dire à Achab, roi d'Israël : Voici ce que dit Ben-Ader :
3Ton argent et ton or m'appartiennent ; tes femmes et tes enfants m'appartiennent.
4Le roi d'Israël répondit : Comme tu l'as dit, ô roi mon maître, je t'appartiens, et toutes les choses que je possède.
5Les messagers vinrent encore, et ils dirent : Voici ce que dit Ben-Ader : de t'ai envoyé dire : Tu me livreras ton argent et ton or, et tes femmes et tes enfants.
6Demain donc, à pareille heure, j'enverrai près de toi mes serviteurs ; ils fouilleront dans ta maison et dans les maisons de tes serviteurs, et ils prendront toutes les choses désirables à leurs yeux, sur lesquelles ils auront mis la main.
7Alors, le roi d'Israël convoqua tous les anciens de la terre promise, et il dit : Écoutez, voyez quelle lâcheté demande cet homme : il me demande mes femmes, mes fils et mes filles. Quant à mon argent et à mon or, je ne les lui ai point refusés.
8Et les anciens et tout le peuple s'écrièrent : Ne l'écoute pas, n'y consens point.
9Il dit donc aux messagers de Ben-Ader : Dites à votre maître : Toutes les choses pour lesquelles tu as d'abord envoyé à ton serviteur, je les ferai, mais cette dernière chose je ne puis la faire. Et les hommes partirent, et ils rapportèrent sa réponse à leur maître.
10Ben-Ader envoya encore à lui, disant : Que le Seigneur me punisse, et qu'il me punisse encore, si votre tanière à renards de Samarie suffit pour contenir les piétons de mon armée.
11Le roi d'Israël reprit : C'est assez : que le tortu ne se glorifie pas comme l'homme qui se tient droit.
12Lorsque cette réponse fut rapportée au Syrien, il était à boire sous sa tente avec tous les rois ses alliés, et il dit à ses serviteurs : Elevez un retranchement. Ils firent donc un retranchement autour de la ville.
13Or, voilà qu'un prophète arriva devant Achab, roi d'Israël, et dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : As-tu vu cette innombrable multitude ? Eh bien ! aujourd'hui je te la livre, et tu reconnaîtras que je suis le Seigneur.
14Et Achab demanda : Par qui ? Et le prophète reprit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Par les jeunes fils des chefs des provinces. Et Achab dit : Qui commencera le combat ? Le prophète répondit : Toi.
15Et Achab passa en revue les jeunes fils des chefs des provinces ; ils étaient deux cent trente ; après cela, il passa en revue l'armée, toute formée d'hommes vaillants ; il y en avait sept mille.
16Puis, il sortit au milieu du jour, comme Ben-Ader était à boire et à s'enivrer en Socchoth, lui et les trente-deux rois ses alliés.
17Et les jeunes fils des chefs des provinces sortirent d'abord ; on l'alla rapporter au roi de Syrie, disant : Des hommes sont arrivés de Samarie.
18Et il répondit : S'ils viennent en paix, prenez-les vivants ; s'ils viennent en guerre, prenez-les vivants.
19Et les jeunes fils des chefs des provinces sortirent de la ville ; cependant l'armée les suivait.
20Et chacun frappa l'homme le plus près de lui ; puis, une seconde fois, chacun frappa l'homme le plus près de lui ; aussitôt, la Syrie prit la fuite, Israël la poursuivit, et Ben-Ader s'échappa sur le cheval d'un simple cavalier.
21Et le roi d'Israël sortit ; il prit tous les chevaux avec les chars, et il fit des Syriens un grand carnage.
22Ensuite, le prophète alla trouver le roi d'Israël, à qui il dit : Fortifie-toi, observe, et vois ce que tu as à faire ; car, l'année révolue, Ben-Ader, roi de Syrie, reviendra contre toi.
23Et les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent : Le Dieu d'Israël est le Dieu des montagnes, et non le Dieu des vallées ; voilà pourquoi ils nous ont vaincus ; si nous leur faisons la guerre dans la plaine, nous l'emporterons sur eux.
24Fais ceci : renvoie les rois chacun en leur demeure, remplace-les par les princes des Philistins.
25Et nous te donnerons une autre armée aussi nombreuse que celle qui a été détruite ; un cheval remplacera un cheval, des chars remplaceront les chars ; nous les combattrons dans la plaine, et nous l'emporterons sur eux. Et le roi les écouta, et il fit ainsi.
26L'année révolue, Ben-Ader passa en revue les forces de la Syrie, et il se porta en Aphèca pour combattre Israël.
27Les fils d'Israël aussi passèrent en revue leur armée, et ils marchèrent contre eux. Et Israël campa vis-à-vis leur camp ; ils étaient comme deux troupeaux de chèvres, et les Syriens remplissaient la terre.
28Alors, l'homme de Dieu revint, et il dit au roi d'Israël : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : En punition de ce que la Syrie a dit : Le Dieu d'Israël est le Dieu des montagnes et non le Dieu des vallées, je te livrerai cette armée innombrable, et tu reconnaîtras que je suis le Seigneur.
29Et les deux camps restèrent sept jours l'un vis-à-vis de l'autre ; le septième jour la bataille s'engagea, et Israël tua aux Syriens cent mille piétons en une seule journée.
30Et les survivants se réfugièrent dans Aphèca, dont les murs s'écroulèrent sur vingt-sept mille de ceux qui s'étaient échappés ; Ben-Ader se cacha dans l'alcôve d'une chambre à coucher ;
31Et il dit à ses serviteurs : Je sais que les rois d'Israël sont des rois miséricordieux ; couvrons nos reins de cilices :, passons-nous des cordes autour du cou, et sortons au-devant du roi d'Israël ; peut-être il nous renverra la vie sauve.
32Et ils se couvrirent les reins de cilices ; ils se passèrent des cordes autour du cou, et ils dirent au roi d'Israël : Ton serviteur Ben-Ader dit : Que j'aie la vie sauve. Achab répondit : Vit-il encore ? Il est mon frère.
33Les serviteurs en tirèrent bon présage ; ils firent des libations, et ils s'emparèrent de la parole qui était sortie de la bouche d'Achab, et ils dirent : Ben-Ader est ton frère. Il reprit : Allez le chercher et amenez-le. Ben-Ader sortit de sa retraite pour aller près d'Achab, et ses serviteurs le firent monter auprès de lui sur un char.
34Et Achab dit : Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises au tien ; tu pourras te faire des issues à Damas, comme mon père en a fait à Samarie, et je te renverrai après avoir conclu alliance avec toi. Et ils firent alliance, et il le renvoya.
35Mais un homme, l'un des fils des prophètes, dit, d'après la parole du Seigneur, à son voisin : Frappe-moi. Mais l'autre ne voulut pas le frapper.
36Et le prophète lui dit : En punition de ce que tu n'as point obéi à la voix du Seigneur, quand tu seras loin de moi un lion te tuera. En effet, l'homme s'éloigna, un lion le rencontra et le tua.
37Et le prophète alla trouver un autre homme, et il lui dit : Frappe-moi. L'homme le frappa, le frappa encore, et l'accabla de coups.
38Ensuite, le prophète partit, et il se tint sur le chemin qu'avait pris le roi ; or, il s'était bandé les yeux.
39Quand le roi vint à passer, il cria après lui, disant : Ton serviteur est allé à la guerre, et voilà qu'un homme m'a amené un homme, et m'a dit : Garde cet homme ; s'il s'échappe, tu me donneras ta vie pour sa vie, ou tu paieras un talent d'argent.
40Mais ton serviteur a eu beau regarder tout alentour çà et là, l'homme s'est évadé. A ces mots, le roi d'Israël s'écria : Tu me tends un piège ; tu l'as tué.
41Et le prophète se hâta d'ôter le bandeau qui couvrait ses yeux. Alors, le roi reconnut que c'était l'un des prophètes.
42Et le prophète lui dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Parce que tu as laissé échapper un méchant homme, ta vie pour sa vie, ton peuple pour son peuple.
43Le roi d'Israël s'en alla donc confondu et attristé ; puis, il rentra dans Samarie.

1PASADOS estos negocios, aconteció que Naboth de Jezreel tenía en Jezreel una viña junto al palacio de Achâb rey de Samaria.
2Y Achâb habló á Naboth, diciendo: Dame tu viña para un huerto de legumbres, porque está cercana, junto á mi casa, y yo te daré por ella otra viña mejor que esta; ó si mejor te pareciere, te pagaré su valor en dinero.
3Y Naboth respondió á Achâb: Guárdeme Jehová de que yo te dé á ti la heredad de mis padres.
4Y vínose Achâb á su casa triste y enojado, por la palabra que Naboth de Jezreel le había respondido, diciendo: No te daré la heredad de mis padres. Y acostóse en su cama, y volvió su rostro, y no comió pan.
5Y vino á él su mujer Jezabel, y díjole: ¿Por qué está tan triste tu espíritu, y no comes pan?
6Y él respondió: Porque hablé con Naboth de Jezreel, y díjele que me diera su viña por dinero, ó que, si más quería, le daría otra viña por ella; y él respondió: Yo no te daré mi viña.
7Y su mujer Jezabel le dijo: ¿Eres tú ahora rey sobre Israel? Levántate, y come pan, y alégrate: yo te daré la viña de Naboth de Jezreel.
8Entonces ella escribió cartas en nombre de Achâb, y sellólas con su anillo y enviólas á los ancianos y á los principales que moraban en su ciudad con Naboth.
9Y las cartas que escribió decían así: Proclamad ayuno, y poned á Naboth á la cabecera del pueblo;
10Y poned dos hombres perversos delante de él, que atestigüen contra él, y digan: Tú has blasfemado á Dios y al rey. Y entonces sacadlo, y apedreadlo, y muera.
11Y los de su ciudad, los ancianos y los principales que moraban en su ciudad, lo hicieron como Jezabel les mandó, conforme á lo escrito en las cartas que ella les había enviado.
12Y promulgaron ayuno, y asentaron á Naboth á la cabecera del pueblo.
13Vinieron entonces dos hombres perversos, y sentáronse delante de él: y aquellos hombres de Belial atestiguaron contra Naboth delante del pueblo, diciendo: Naboth ha blasfemado á Dios y al rey. Y sacáronlo fuera de la ciudad, y apedreáronlo con piedras, y murió.
14Después enviaron á decir á Jezabel: Naboth ha sido apedreado y muerto.
15Y como Jezabel oyó que Naboth había sido apedreado y muerto, dijo á Achâb: Levántate y posee la viña de Naboth de Jezreel, que no te la quiso dar por dinero; porque Naboth no vive, sino que es muerto.
16Y oyendo Achâb que Naboth era muerto, levantóse para descender á la viña de Naboth de Jezreel, para tomar posesión de ella.
17Entonces fué palabra de Jehová á Elías Thisbita, diciendo:
18Levántate, desciende á encontrarte con Achâb rey de Israel, que está en Samaria: he aquí él está en la viña de Naboth, á la cual ha descendido para tomar posesión de ella.
19Y hablarle has, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿No mataste y también has poseído? Y tornarás á hablarle, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: En el mismo lugar donde lamieron los perros la sangre de Naboth, los perros lamerán también tu sangre, la tuya misma.
20Y Achâb dijo á Elías: ¿Me has hallado, enemigo mío? Y él respondió: Hete encontrado, porque te has vendido á mal hacer delante de Jehová.
21He aquí yo traigo mal sobre ti, y barreré tu posteridad, y talaré de Achâb todo meante á la pared, al guardado y al desamparado en Israel:
22Y yo pondré tu casa como la casa de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, y como la casa de Baasa hijo de Ahía; por la provocación con que me provocaste á ira, y con que has hecho pecar á Israel.
23De Jezabel también ha hablado Jehová, diciendo: Los perros comerán á Jezabel en la barbacana de Jezreel.
24El que de Achâb fuere muerto en la ciudad, perros le comerán: y el que fuere muerto en el campo, comerlo han las aves del cielo.
25(A la verdad ninguno fué como Achâb, que se vendiese á hacer lo malo á los ojos de Jehová; porque Jezabel su mujer lo incitaba.
26El fué en grande manera abominable, caminando en pos de los ídolos, conforme á todo lo que hicieron los Amorrheos, á los cuales lanzó Jehová delante de los hijos de Israel.)
27Y acaeció cuando Achâb oyó estas palabras, que rasgó sus vestidos, y puso saco sobre su carne, y ayunó, y durmió en saco, y anduvo humillado.
28Entonces fué palabra de Jehová á Elías Thisbita, diciendo:
29¿No has visto como Achâb se ha humillado delante de mí? Pues por cuanto se ha humillado delante de mí, no traeré el mal en sus días: en los días de su hijo traeré el mal sobre su casa.

1And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
2And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
3And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.
4And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
5But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?
6And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.

21Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel,
22And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.
23And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

29Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.

1After these things, Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
2Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near my house; and I will give you for it a better vineyard than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.”
3Naboth said to Ahab, “May the LORD forbid me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”
4Ahab came into his house sullen and angry because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He laid himself down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
5But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, “Why is your spirit so sad that you eat no bread?”
6He said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ He answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’”
7Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be merry. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”

15When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”
16When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
17The LORD’s word came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

19You shall speak to him, saying, ‘The LORD says, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ You shall speak to him, saying, ‘The LORD says, “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours.”’”
20Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the LORD’s sight.
21Behold, I will bring evil on you, and will utterly sweep you away and will cut off from Ahab everyone who urinates against a wall, and him who is shut up and him who is left at large in Israel.
22I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation with which you have provoked me to anger, and have made Israel to sin.”
23The LORD also spoke of Jezebel, saying, “The dogs will eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.
24The dogs will eat whoever dies of Ahab in the city; and the birds of the sky will eat whoever dies in the field.”
25But there was no one like Ahab, who sold himself to do that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.
