1Als nun der König David alt (und) hochbetagt geworden war, hüllte man ihn in Decken ein, aber er konnte trotzdem nicht warm werden.
2Da sagten seine Diener zu ihm: »Man muß sich für den König, unsern Herrn, nach einem jungfräulichen Mädchen umsehen, die ihn zu bedienen hat und als Pflegerin bei ihm ist; wenn die dann in seinen Armen ruht, wird der König, unser Herr, gewiß warm werden.«
3Da suchte man denn im ganzen Bereiche Israels nach dem schönsten Mädchen; und man fand Abisag von Sunem und brachte sie zum König.
4Sie war ein Mädchen von außerordentlicher Schönheit und hatte nun den König zu bedienen und zu pflegen; aber der König hatte keinen ehelichen Umgang mit ihr.
5Adonia aber, der Sohn der Haggith, dachte voller Überhebung: »Ich bin’s, der König wird!« Daher schaffte er sich Wagen und Pferde an und fünfzig Mann, die als Leibdiener vor ihm herliefen.
6Sein Vater hatte ihm darüber nie, solange er lebte, Vorstellungen gemacht, daß er zu ihm gesagt hätte: »Warum tust du so etwas?« Dazu war er ein Mann von großer Schönheit und war gleich nach Absalom geboren.
7So setzte er sich denn ins Einvernehmen mit Joab, dem Sohn der Zeruja, und mit dem Priester Abjathar, so daß diese auf der Seite Adonias standen,
8während der Priester Zadok und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, und der Prophet Nathan sowie Simei und Rei und die Helden Davids es nicht mit Adonia hielten.
9Als nun Adonia beim Schlangenstein, der neben der Walkerquelle liegt, Kleinvieh, Rinder und Mastkälber zu einem großen Opfermahl schlachtete, lud er alle seine Brüder, die Königssöhne (königlichen Prinzen), dazu ein, auch alle Männer von Juda, soweit sie im Dienste des Königs standen;
10aber den Propheten Nathan und Benaja sowie die Helden und seinen Bruder Salomo ließ er uneingeladen.
11Da sagte Nathan zu Bathseba, der Mutter Salomos: »Hast du nicht gehört, daß Adonia, der Sohn der Haggith, sich zum König gemacht hat, ohne daß David, unser Herr, etwas davon weiß?
12Nun denn, komm, ich will dir einen Rat geben, wie du dir und deinem Sohne Salomo das Leben retten kannst!
13Gehe sofort zum König David hinein und sage zu ihm: ›Du selbst hast ja doch, mein Herr und König, deiner Magd eidlich versprochen, daß mein Sohn Salomo König nach dir werden und er der Erbe deines Thrones sein solle. Wie kommt es denn, daß jetzt Adonia König geworden ist?‹
14Während du dann dort noch mit dem Könige redest, werde ich selbst nach dir hineinkommen und deine Aussagen bestätigen.«
15So ging denn Bathseba zum König in das Schlafgemach hinein; der König aber war schon sehr alt, und Abisag von Sunem war seine Pflegerin.
16Als Bathseba sich nun vor dem Könige verneigt und niedergeworfen hatte, fragte der König sie: »Was wünschest du?«
17Sie antwortete ihm: »Mein Herr, du selbst hast deiner Magd bei dem HERRN, deinem Gott, zugeschworen, daß mein Sohn Salomo König nach dir werden und er der Erbe deines Thrones sein solle.
18Aber nun hat sich ja doch Adonia zum König gemacht, ohne daß du, mein Herr und König, etwas davon weißt.
19Er hat nämlich Rinder, Mastkälber und Kleinvieh in Menge (zu einem großen Opfermahl) schlachten lassen und alle königlichen Prinzen, auch den Priester Abjathar, sowie den obersten Heerführer Joab dazu eingeladen; aber deinen Knecht Salomo hat er uneingeladen gelassen!
20Nun aber, mein Herr und König, sind die Augen aller Israeliten auf dich gerichtet, daß du ihnen kundgebest, wer auf dem Throne meines Herrn, des Königs, als sein Nachfolger sitzen soll.
21Sonst wird es dahin kommen, sobald mein Herr und König sich zu seinen Vätern (schlafen) gelegt hat, daß ich und mein Sohn Salomo als Schuldige dastehen.«
22Während sie noch mit dem Könige redete, erschien der Prophet Nathan;
23man meldete also dem Könige: »Der Prophet Nathan ist da!« Und er trat vor den König, und als er sich vor ihm mit dem Angesicht zur Erde verneigt und sich niedergeworfen hatte,
24sagte Nathan: »Mein Herr und König! Du hast wohl selbst angeordnet, daß Adonia König nach dir sein und auf deinem Throne sitzen soll?
25Denn er ist heute hinabgegangen und hat Rinder, Mastkälber und Kleinvieh in Menge schlachten lassen und hat alle königlichen Prinzen, außerdem die obersten Heerführer und den Priester Abjathar eingeladen; und nun essen und trinken sie vor ihm und rufen: ›Es lebe der König Adonia!‹
26Aber mich, deinen Knecht, und den Priester Zadok sowie Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas, und deinen Knecht Salomo hat er nicht dazu eingeladen!
27Wenn dies alles mit Wissen und Willen meines Herrn, des Königs, geschehen ist, so hättest du also deine Diener nicht wissen lassen, wer auf dem Throne meines Herrn, des Königs, als sein Nachfolger sitzen soll?«
28Da antwortete der König David: »Ruft mir Bathseba (wieder)!« Als sie nun erschienen und vor den König getreten war,
29schwur der König mit den Worten: »So wahr der HERR lebt, der mich aus aller Not errettet hat!
30Wie ich dir beim HERRN, dem Gott Israels, geschworen und gelobt habe, daß nämlich dein Sohn Salomo König nach mir sein und als mein Nachfolger auf meinem Throne sitzen soll, so will ich es am heutigen Tage wahr machen!«
31Da verneigte sich Bathseba mit dem Angesicht bis zum Boden, warf sich vor dem Könige nieder und rief aus: »Möge mein Herr, der König David, ewiglich leben!«
32Hierauf befahl der König David: »Ruft mir den Priester Zadok, den Propheten Nathan und Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas!« Als sie vor dem Könige erschienen waren, befahl dieser ihnen:
33»Nehmt die Knechte eures Herrn mit euch und laßt meinen Sohn Salomo mein eigenes Maultier besteigen und geleitet ihn hinab an den Gihon.
34Dort sollen der Priester Zadok und der Prophet Nathan ihn zum König über Israel salben; ihr aber laßt in die Posaune stoßen und ruft: ›Es lebe der König Salomo!‹
35Alsdann zieht hinter ihm her wieder (zur Burg) herauf; und wenn er dort angekommen ist, soll er sich auf meinen Thron setzen, und dann soll er König sein an meiner Statt; denn ihn habe ich zum Fürsten über Israel und Juda bestellt!«
36Da antwortete Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, dem König mit den Worten: »So sei es! Möge der HERR, der Gott meines Herrn, des Königs, sein Amen dazu sprechen!
37Wie Gott der HERR mit meinem Herrn, dem König, gewesen ist, so möge er auch mit Salomo sein und möge seinen Thron noch mehr erhöhen als den Thron meines Herrn, des Königs David!«
38So gingen denn der Priester Zadok, der Prophet Nathan und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, samt der Leibwache der Krethi und Plethi hinab, ließen Salomo das Maultier des Königs David besteigen und geleiteten ihn an den Gihon.
39Der Priester Zadok hatte aber das mit Öl gefüllte Horn aus dem (heiligen) Zelt mitgenommen und salbte nun Salomo; dann ließen sie in die Posaune stoßen, und alles Volk rief: »Es lebe der König Salomo!«
40Hierauf geleitete ihn alles Volk (nach der Burg) hinauf, indem die Leute alle dabei auf Flöten bliesen und so laut und freudig jubelten, daß die Erde vor ihrem Geschrei schier bersten wollte.
41Das hörten Adonia und alle seine Gäste, als sie eben mit dem Mahl zu Ende waren. Als nun Joab den Posaunenschall vernahm, fragte er: »Was bedeutet das Geschrei und der Lärm in der Stadt?«
42Während er noch redete, kam Jonathan, der Sohn des Priesters Abjathar; und Adonia rief ihm zu: »Komm herein, du bist ein zuverlässiger Mann und bringst gewiß gute Botschaft!«
43Aber Jonathan antwortete dem Adonia: »Im Gegenteil! Unser Herr, der König David, hat Salomo zum König gemacht!
44Der König hat nämlich den Priester Zadok, den Propheten Nathan und Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas, samt der Leibwache der Krethi und Plethi mit ihm entsandt; diese haben ihn das Maultier des Königs besteigen lassen,
45und der Priester Zadok und der Prophet Nathan haben ihn am Gihon zum König gesalbt und sind von dort jubelnd (auf die Burg) hinaufgezogen, und die ganze Stadt ist dadurch in Aufregung geraten; daher rührt das Geschrei, das ihr gehört habt.
46Salomo hat sich dann auch auf den Königsthron gesetzt;
47außerdem sind auch die Diener des Königs bereits hineingegangen, um unserm Herrn, dem König David, Glück zu wünschen mit den Worten: ›Dein Gott möge den Namen Salomos noch ruhmvoller machen als den deinigen und seinen Thron noch mehr erhöhen als den deinigen!‹ Dabei hat der König sich auf seinem Lager verneigt
48und auch noch die Worte hinzugefügt: ›Gepriesen sei der HERR, der Gott Israels, der es heute so gefügt hat, daß ich einen Nachfolger (aus meinem Geschlecht) auf meinem Throne mit eigenen Augen sitzen sehe!‹«
49Da erschraken alle, die von Adonia eingeladen worden waren; sie brachen auf und gingen ein jeder seines Weges.
50Adonia selbst aber, der sich vor Salomo fürchtete, eilte sofort hin und umfaßte die Hörner des Altars.
51Als man dies dem Salomo meldete mit den Worten: »Adonia hat jetzt aus Furcht vor dem König Salomo die Hörner des Altars umfaßt und erklärt, der König Salomo möge ihm erst schwören, daß er seinen Knecht nicht hinrichten lassen wolle«,
52sagte Salomo: »Wenn er sich als ein ehrenhafter Mann erweist, so soll ihm kein Haar gekrümmt werden; läßt er sich aber Böses zuschulden kommen, dann ist er ein Kind des Todes!«
53Darauf ließ ihn der König Salomo vom Altar wegholen; und als er kam und sich vor dem König Salomo niederwarf, sagte dieser zu ihm: »Gehe in dein Haus!«

1COMO el rey David era viejo, y entrado en días, cubríanle de vestidos, mas no se calentaba.
2Dijéronle por tanto sus siervos: Busquen á mi señor el rey una moza virgen, para que esté delante del rey, y lo abrigue, y duerma á su lado, y calentará á mi señor el rey.
3Y buscaron una moza hermosa por todo el término de Israel, y hallaron á Abisag Sunamita, y trajéronla al rey.
4Y la moza era hermosa, la cual calentaba al rey, y le servía: mas el rey nunca la conoció.
5Entonces Adonía hijo de Haggith se levantó, diciendo: Yo reinaré. E hízose de carros y gente de á caballo, y cincuenta hombres que corriesen delante de él.
6Y su padre nunca lo entristeció en todos sus días con decirle: ¿Por qué haces así? Y también éste era de hermoso parecer; y habíalo engendrado después de Absalom.
7Y tenía tratos con Joab hijo de Sarvia, y con Abiathar sacerdote, los cuales ayudaban á Adonía.
8Mas Sadoc sacerdote, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y Nathán profeta, y Semei, y Reihi, y todos los grandes de David, no seguían á Adonía.
9Y matando Adonía ovejas y vacas y animales engordados junto á la peña de Zoheleth, que está cerca de la fuente de Rogel, convidó á todos sus hermanos los hijos del rey, y á todos los varones de Judá, siervos del rey:
10Mas no convidó á Nathán profeta, ni á Benaía, ni á los grandes, ni á Salomón su hermano.
11Y habló Nathán á Bath-sheba madre de Salomón, diciendo: ¿No has oído que reina Adonía hijo de Haggith, sin saberlo David nuestro señor?
12Ven pues ahora, y toma mi consejo, para que guardes tu vida, y la vida de tu hijo Salomón.
13Ve, y entra al rey David, y dile: Rey señor mío, ¿no has tú jurado á tu sierva, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono? ¿por qué pues reina Adonía?
14Y estando tú aún hablando con el rey, yo entraré tras ti, y acabaré tus razones.
15Entonces Bath-sheba entró al rey á la cámara: y el rey era muy viejo; y Abisag Sunamita servía al rey.
16Y Bath-sheba se inclinó, é hizo reverencia al rey. Y el rey dijo: ¿Qué tienes?
17Y ella le respondió: Señor mío, tú juraste á tu sierva por Jehová tu Dios, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono;
18Y he aquí ahora Adonía reina: y tú, mi señor rey, ahora no lo supiste.
19Ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á Abiathar sacerdote, y á Joab general del ejército; mas á Salomón tu siervo no ha convidado.
20Entre tanto, rey señor mío, los ojos de todo Israel están sobre ti, para que les declares quién se ha de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él.
21De otra suerte acontecerá, cuando mi señor el rey durmiere con sus padres, que yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos tenidos por culpables.
22Y estando aún hablando ella con el rey, he aquí Nathán profeta, que vino.
23Y dieron aviso al rey, diciendo: He aquí Nathán profeta: el cual como entró al rey, postróse delante del rey inclinando su rostro á tierra.
24Y dijo Nathán: Rey señor mío, ¿has tú dicho: Adonía reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono?
25Porque hoy ha descendido, y ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á los capitanes del ejército, y también á Abiathar sacerdote; y he aquí, están comiendo y bebiendo delante de él, y han dicho: ¡Viva el rey Adonía!
26Mas ni á mí tu siervo, ni á Sadoc sacerdote, ni á Benaía hijo de Joiada, ni á Salomón tu siervo, ha convidado.
27¿Es este negocio ordenado por mi señor el rey, sin haber declarado á tu siervo quién se había de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?
28Entonces el rey David respondió, y dijo: Llamadme á Bath-sheba. Y ella entró á la presencia del rey, y púsose delante del rey.
29Y el rey juró, diciendo: Vive Jehová, que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia,
30Que como yo te he jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel, diciendo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono en lugar mío; que así lo haré hoy.
31Entonces Bath-sheba se inclinó al rey, su rostro á tierra, y haciendo reverencia al rey, dijo: Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre.
32Y el rey David dijo: Llamadme á Sadoc sacerdote, y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada. Y ellos entraron á la presencia del rey.
33Y el rey les dijo: Tomad con vosotros los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced subir á Salomón mi hijo en mi mula, y llevadlo á Gihón:
34Y allí lo ungirán Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta por rey sobre Israel; y tocaréis trompeta, diciendo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
35Después iréis vosotros detrás de él, y vendrá y se sentará en mi trono, y él reinará por mí; porque á él he ordenado para que sea príncipe sobre Israel y sobre Judá.
36Entonces Benaía hijo de Joiada respondió al rey, y dijo: Amén. Así lo diga Jehová, Dios de mi señor el rey.
37De la manera que Jehová ha sido con mi señor el rey, así sea con Salomón; y él haga mayor su trono que el trono de mi señor el rey David.
38Y descendió Sadoc sacerdote, y Nathán profeta, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y los Ceretheos y los Peletheos, é hicieron subir á Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lleváronlo á Gihón.
39Y tomando Sadoc sacerdote el cuerno del aceite del tabernáculo, ungió á Salomón: y tocaron trompeta, y dijo todo el pueblo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
40Después subió todo el pueblo en pos de él, y cantaba la gente con flautas, y hacían grandes alegrías, que parecía que la tierra se hundía con el clamor de ellos.
41Y oyólo Adonía, y todos los convidados que con él estaban, cuando ya habían acabado de comer. Y oyendo Joab el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: ¿Por qué se alborota la ciudad con estruendo?
42Estando aún él hablando, he aquí Jonathán hijo de Abiathar sacerdote vino, al cual dijo Adonía: Entra, porque tú eres hombre de esfuerzo, y traerás buenas nuevas.
43Y Jonathán respondió, y dijo á Adonía: Ciertamente nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey á Salomón:
44Y el rey ha enviado con él á Sadoc sacerdote y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada, y también á los Ceretheos y á los Peletheos, los cuales le hicieron subir en la mula del rey;
45Y Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta lo han ungido en Gihón por rey: y de allá han subido con alegrías, y la ciudad está llena de estruendo. Este es el alboroto que habéis oído.
46Y también Salomón se ha sentado en el trono del reino.
47Y aun los siervos del rey han venido á bendecir á nuestro señor el rey David, diciendo: Dios haga bueno el nombre de Salomón más que tu nombre, y haga mayor su trono que el tuyo. Y el rey adoró en la cama.
48Y también el rey habló así: Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel, que ha dado hoy quien se siente en mi trono, viéndolo mis ojos.
49Ellos entonces se estremecieron, y levantáronse todos los convidados que estaban con Adonía, y fuése cada uno por su camino.
50Mas Adonía, temiendo de la presencia de Salomón, levantóse y fuése, y cogió los cornijales del altar.
51Y fué hecho saber á Salomón, diciendo: He aquí que Adonía tiene miedo del rey Salomón: pues ha cogido los cornijales del altar, diciendo: Júreme hoy el rey Salomón que no matará á cuchillo á su siervo.
52Y Salomón dijo: Si él fuere virtuoso, ni uno de sus cabellos caerá en tierra: mas si se hallare mal en él, morirá.
53Y envió el rey Salomón, y trajéronlo del altar; y él vino, é inclinóse al rey Salomón. Y Salomón le dijo: Vete á tu casa.

1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants:
10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
29And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too.
37As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule:
45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
World English Bible
1Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.
2Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be sought for my lord the king. Let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”
3So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.
7He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;
10but he didn’t call Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.
11Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?
12Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life and your son Solomon’s life.
13Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’
14Behold, while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”
15Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.
16Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”
17She said to him, “My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’
18Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.
19He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.
20You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”
22Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.
23They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24Nathan said, “My lord, King, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?
25For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
26But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.
27Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
28Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
29The king vowed and said, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
30most certainly as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”
31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”
32King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.
33The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
34Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
35Then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne; for he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.”
36Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.
37As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
40All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.
41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”
42While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”
43Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.
45Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.
46Also, Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.
47Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.
48Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’”
49All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.
50Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and hung onto the horns of the altar.
51Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’”
52Solomon said, “If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of his shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.”
53So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
