7Ils lui dirent : Si aujourd'hui tu te montres le serviteur de ce peuple, si tu te montres agréable pour lui, si tu lui dit de bonnes paroles, ils seront tes serviteurs tous les jours.
8Mais il dédaigna le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné, et il consulta les jeunes gens élevés avec lui, et qui se tenaient auprès de lui.
9Et il leur dit : Que me conseillez-vous ? Que dois-je répondre à ce peuple qui me dit : Allège le joug que nous a mis ton père ?

13Et le roi leur répondit durement, car il avait dédaigné le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné.
14Et il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, et il leur dit : Mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, je le rendrai pour vous plus pesant encore ; mon père vous a châtiés à coups de fouet, je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.
15Et le roi n'avait point écouté les fils d'Israël, parce que le Seigneur s'était tourné contre lui, afin de confirmer la parole qu'il avait dite concernant Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, par Achias le Silonite.
16Quand Israël vit que le roi ne l'avait pas écouté, le peuple répondit au roi : Qu'y a-t-il entre nous et David ? Notre héritage ne dépend pas du fils de Jessé. Hâte-toi, ô Israël ! de retourner en tes demeures ; et toi, David, nourris ta maison. Et Israël s'en alla chacun en sa demeure.

22Mais la parole du Seigneur vint à Samaïas, homme de Dieu, disant :
23Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda, à Benjamin et au reste du peuple, dis-leur :
24Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Ne partez pas, ne combattez point vos frères, les fils d'Israël ; retournez chacun en votre demeure, car cette chose est de moi. Ils obéirent à la parole du Seigneur, et, selon son ordre, ils renoncèrent à marcher. Ainsi, le roi Salomon s'était endormi avec ses pères ; il avait été enseveli auprès d'eux dans la ville de David ; et Roboam, son fils, régnait à sa place en Jérusalem. Il avait seize ans quand il monta sur le trône, et il régna douze ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère se nommait Naanan, fille d'Ana, fils de Naas, roi des fils d'Ammon. Il fit le mal devant le Seigneur, et il ne marcha point en la voie de David, son aïeul. Or, il y avait un homme de la montagne d'Ephraïm, serviteur de Salomon, et son nom était Jéroboam, et sa mère, femme prostituée, s'appelait Sarira. Salomon le nomma chef, et lui donna le bâton de commandement pour recueillir les tributs de la maison de Joseph. Il bâtit, pour Salomon, Sarira, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm ; et il avait trois cents chars traînés par des chevaux. C'est lui qui éleva la citadelle avec les impôts de la maison d'Ephraïm ; c'est lui aussi qui entoura de murs la ville de David, et il s'enorgueillit jusqu'à désirer la royauté. Alors, Salomon tenta de le mettre à mort ; il eut crainte, il se réfugia chez Sésac, roi d'Égypte, et il demeura près de lui jusqu'à la mort de Salomon. Jéroboam apprit en Égypte que Salomon était mort, et il s'ouvrit à Sésac, roi d'Égypte, disant : Congédie-moi, et je retournerai en mon pays. Sésac répliqua : Demande-moi ce que tu désires, et je te l'accorderai. Or, Sésac avait donné pour femme à Jéroboam Ano, sœur aînée de Thécémina, sa femme. Elle était grande parmi les filles du roi, et elle avait enfanté pour Jéroboam Abias, son fils. Jéroboam dit donc à Sésac : il faut que tu me congédies, et je partirai. Jéroboam sortit, en effet, de l'Égypte, et il revint dans la terre de Sarira, de la montagne d'Ephrem, et il y réunit toute la tribu d'Ephraïm, et il y bâtit une forteresse. En ce temps-là, son fils fut atteint d'une violente maladie, et Jéroboam partit pour consulter au sujet de l'enfant, et il dit à Ano, sa femme : Lève- toi, viens, et consulte Dieu au sujet de l'entant ; demande s'il vivra, et s'il guérira de sa maladie. Or, il y avait en Silom un homme appelé Achias, âgé de soixante ans ; la parole du Seigneur était en lui. Et Jéroboam dit à sa femme : Lève-toi, prends en tes mains des pains pour l'homme de Dieu, des gâteaux pour ses enfants, du raisin et un pot de miel. La femme se leva, elle prit en ses mains des pains, deux gâteaux, du raisin et un pot de miel pour Achias. Or, l'homme était vieux, et ses yeux obscurcis voyaient difficilement. Ano partit de Sarira, et elle se mit en marche. Comme elle entrait dans la ville où demeurait Achias le Silonite, le vieillard dit à son serviteur : Cours à la rencontre d'Ano, femme de Jéroboam, et dis-lui : Entre, et ne t'arrête pas. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Je t'envoie des malheurs. Ano fut introduite auprès de l'homme de Dieu, et Achias lui dit : Pourquoi m'as-tu apporté des pains, du raisin, des gâteaux et un pot de miel ? Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Tu vas t'éloigner de moi, et ceci adviendra : Quand tu seras arrivée en la ville de Sarira, tes servantes viendront à ta rencontre, et elles te diront : L'enfant est mort. Car, voici ce qui dit le Seigneur : Je détruirai les mâles nés de Jéroboam ; il y aura, dans la ville, des morts issus de Jéroboam ; les chiens les dévoreront ; et celui qui mourra dans les champs, les oiseaux du ciel le mangeront. Et on va se lamenter au sujet de l'enfant, on dira : Malheur à moi ! Seigneur, parce qu'en lui s'est trouvée la bonne parole du Seigneur. La femme, après l'avoir ouï, s'en alla ; et, comme elle arrivait à Sarira, l'enfant mourut ; on l'accueillit avec des cris de douleur. Après cela, Jéroboam alla à Sichem, en la montagne d'Ephraïm ; il y rassembla les tribus d'Israël, et Roboam, fils de Salomon, s'y rendit. Et la parole du Seigneur vint à Samaïas fils d'Enlami, disant : Prends avec toi un manteau neuf sur lequel la pluie n'est pas encore tombée, déchire-le en douze parts et présente-le à Jéroboam, disant : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Prends pour toi dix de ces lambeaux pour t'en revêtir. Jéroboam les prit, et Samaïas dit : C'est là ce que dit le Seigneur, concernant les dix tribus d'Israël. Le peuple a dit à Roboam, fils de Salomon : Ton père a rendu pesant notre collier, et il a augmenté le poids des mets de sa table ; maintenant donc, allège ce qui nous grève, et nous te servirons. Et Roboam a dit au peuple : Encore trois jours, et je vous répondrai ; puis, Roboam dit à ses serviteurs : Amenez-moi les anciens, et je tiendrai conseil avec eux sur ce que je devrai répondre au peuple dans trois jours. Roboam répéta aux anciens les paroles du peuple, et les anciens du peuple s'écrièrent : Le peuple a bien parlé. Mais Roboam dispersa leur assemblée qui ne lui était pas agréable ; il fit venir, et l'on introduisit ceux qui avaient été élevés avec lui, et il leur dit : Le peuple m'a dit telle et telle chose, et il répéta les paroles du peuple. Aussitôt les jeunes gens s'écrièrent : Voici ce qu'il faut répondre au peuple : Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père ; mon père vous a fait marcher à coups de fouet, moi je vous commanderai avec des scorpions. Ces paroles plurent à Roboam, et il répondit au peuple selon ce que lui avaient suggéré les jeunes gens élevés avec lui. Et le peuple, comme un seul homme, chacun s'adressant à son voisin, s'écria : Qu'y a-t-il entre nous et David ? Notre héritage ne dépend pas du fils de Jessé ; retournons tous en nos demeures, ô Israël ! car cet homme n'est point notre chef ni notre roi. Tout le peuple sortit donc de Sichem et se dispersa ; chacun retourna en sa demeure. Roboam ne perdit point courage ; Il partit, et, étant monté sur son char, il rentra dans Jérusalem. Et toute la tribu de Juda, toute la tribu de Benjamin le suivirent. Au commencement de l'année, Roboam rassembla tous les gens de guerre de Juda et de Benjamin, et il partit pour combattre Jéroboam à Sichem. Et la parole du Seigneur vint à Samaïas, homme de Dieu, disant : Parle à Roboam, roi de Juda, et à toute la maison de Juda, à Benjamin et à tout le reste du peuple, dis-leur : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Ne partez point, ne combattez pas vos frères, les fils d'Israël ; retournez chacun en votre demeure, car cette chose est de moi ; et ils obéirent à la parole du Seigneur ; et, selon son ordre, ils renoncèrent à marcher.
25Ensuite, Jéroboam rebâtit Sichem en la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il y demeura ; puis, il sortit, et il bâtit Pharmel.
26Et Jéroboam se dit en son cœur : La royauté va retourner à la maison de David ;
27Si ce peuple continue de faire des sacrifices dans le temple du Seigneur à Jérusalem, le cœur du peuple retournera au Seigneur et à son maître Roboam, roi de Juda, et ils me feront périr.
28Le roi prit donc conseil, et il se décida ; il fit deux génisses d'or, et il dit au peuple : C'est assez de voyages à Jérusalem ; Israël, voici tes dieux, qui t'ont ramené de l'Égypte.
29Et il plaça l'une des deux génisses à Béthel, et il donna l'autre à Dan.
30Et cette chose devint une cause de péché ; le peuple alla jusqu'à Dan, devant l'une des deux génisses, et il abandonna le temple du Seigneur.
31Il bâtit des temples sur les hauts lieux ; il prit des prêtres de toutes les tribus du peuple, et ces prêtres n'étaient pas des fils de Lévi.
32Jéroboam institua aussi une fête le huitième mois, quinzième jour de la lune, le jour même que l'on fêtait en la terre de Juda, et il monta à l'autel qu'il avait élevé à Béthel pour y sacrifier aux génisses qu'il avait fabriquées, et il plaça en Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu'il avait consacrés.
33Et il monta à l'autel qu'il avait dressé, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, pendant la fête qu'il avait imaginée en son cœur ; il fit célébrer cette fête par les fils d'Israël, et il monta à l'autel pour y sacrifier.

2Y aconteció, que como lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que estaba en Egipto, porque había huído de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto;
3Enviaron y llamáronle. Vino pues Jeroboam y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron á Roboam, diciendo:
4Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora tú disminuye algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.
5Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí á tres días volved á mí. Y el pueblo se fué.
6Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda á este pueblo?
7Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo, y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndole buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre.
8Mas él, dejado el consejo de los viejos que ellos le habían dado, tomó consejo con los mancebos que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él.
9Y díjoles: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos á este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
10Entonces los mancebos que se habían criado con él, le respondieron, diciendo: Así hablarás á este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; mas tú disminúyenos algo: así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11Ahora pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré á vuestro yugo; mi padre os hirió con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones.
12Y al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo á Roboam; según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved á mí al tercer día.
13Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejado el consejo de los ancianos que ellos le habían dado;
14Y hablóles conforme al consejo de los mancebos, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré á vuestro yugo; mi padre os hirió con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones.
15Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era ordenación de Jehová, para confirmar su palabra, que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías Silonita á Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.
16Y cuando todo el pueblo vió que el rey no les había oído, respondióle estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, á tus estancias! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fué á sus estancias.
17Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.
18Y el rey Roboam envió á Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero apedreóle todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se esforzó á subir en un carro, y huir á Jerusalem.
19Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.
20Y aconteció, que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron y llamáronle á la congregación, é hiciéronle rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.
21Y como Roboam vino á Jerusalem, juntó toda la casa de Judá y la tribu de Benjamín, ciento y ochenta mil hombres escogidos de guerra, para hacer guerra á la casa de Israel, y reducir el reino á Roboam hijo de Salomón.
22Mas fué palabra de Jehová á Semeías varón de Dios, diciendo:
23Habla á Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y á toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y á los demás del pueblo, diciendo:
24Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno á su casa; porque este negocio yo lo he hecho. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volviéronse, y fuéronse, conforme á la palabra de Jehová.
25Y reedificó Jeroboam á Sichêm en el monte de Ephraim, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó á Penuel.
26Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino á la casa de David,
27Si este pueblo subiere á sacrificar á la casa de Jehová en Jerusalem: porque el corazón de este pueblo se convertirá á su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán á mí, y se tornarán á Roboam rey de Judá.

33Sacrificó pues sobre el altar que él había hecho en Beth-el, á los quince del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su corazón; é hizo fiesta á los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar perfumes.

1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

6And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
20And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.
30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places which he had made.
33So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth-el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

6King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to answer these people?”
7They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.”
8But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may answer these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”
10The young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Tell these people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us’—tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11Now my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
13The king answered the people roughly, and abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him,
14and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
15So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was a thing brought about from the LORD, that he might establish his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.
20When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed David’s house, except for the tribe of Judah only.
21When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,
24‘The LORD says, “You shall not go up or fight against your brothers, the children of Israel. Everyone return to his house; for this thing is from me.”’” So they listened to the LORD’s word, and returned and went their way, according to the LORD’s word.
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel.
26Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house.
27If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
28So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
29He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30This thing became a sin, for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there.
31He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.
32Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.
33He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.
