1Satan aber trat gegen Israel auf und reizte David zur Zählung Israels.
2So gebot David Joab und den Volksobersten: "Auf! Zählt Israel von Beerseba bis Dan, und bringt mir Bescheid, daß ich weiß, wieviel ihrer sind!"
3Da sprach Joab: "Mag der Herr sein Volk, wie es ist, noch hundertfach vermehren! Sind sie nicht alle dem König, meinem Herrn, untertan? Warum verlangt dies mein Herr? Warum soll es Israel zur Schuld werden?"
4Aber des Königs Befehl zwang Joab. Da zog Joab aus, durchwanderte ganz Israel und kam wieder nach Jerusalem.
5Und Joab gab David die Zahl aus der Volkszählung an: Ganz Israel zählte 1.100.000 und Juda 470.000 schwertgerüstete Männer.
6Er hatte aber Levi und Benjamin nicht mitgemustert. Denn des Königs Befehl war Joab ein Greuel.
7Gott aber mißfiel diese Sache, und so schlug er Israel.
8Da sprach David zu Gott: "Ich habe schwer gesündigt durch das, was ich getan. Nun aber vergib Deinem Knechte die Schuld! Denn ich habe töricht gehandelt."
9Da sprach der Herr zu Gad, dem Seher Davids, also:
10"Auf! Sprich zu David: 'So spricht der Herr: Ich lege dreierlei dir vor. Eins wähle dir davon, daß ich's dir antue!'"
11Da ging Gad zu David und sprach zu ihm: "So spricht der Herr: 'Wähledir!
12Entweder Hungersnot drei Jahre lang oder drei Monate Flucht vor deinen Widersachern, wobei dich deiner Feinde Schwert ereilt, oder drei Tage lang das Schwert des Herrn und Pest im Lande, daß der Engel des Herrn das Gesamtgebiet von Israel wüst macht.' Nun sieh zu, was ich dem bescheiden soll, der mich gesandt!"
13Da sprach David zu Gad: "Mir ist sehr bange. Doch möchte ich lieber in die Hand des Herrn fallen. Denn sein Erbarmen ist sehr groß. Aber in Menschenhand möchte ich nicht fallen."
14So schickte der Herr eine Pest über Israel, und aus Israel fielen 70.000 Mann.
15Gott sandte auch einen Engel nach Jerusalem, es zu verheeren. Als er es verheerte, sah der Herr darein und ließ sich das Unheil gereuen. Er sprach zum Engel, der die große Verheerung anrichtete: "Zieh deine Hand jetzt ab!" Eben stand des Herrn Engel bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan.
16Als nun David seine Augen erhob, sah er den Engel des Herrn zwischen Erde und Himmel stehen, in der Hand ein gezücktes Schwert, gegen Jerusalem ausgestreckt. Da fielen David und die Ältesten, mit härenen Gewändern bedeckt, auf ihr Antlitz.
17Und David sprach zu Gott: "Habe nicht ich befohlen, das Volk zu zählen? Ich bin es also, der gesündigt und übel gehandelt hat. Was aber haben diese Schafe getan? Herr, mein Gott! Deine Hand sei gegen mich und mein Haus, nicht aber gegen Dein Volk zum Schlagen bereit!"
18Der Engel des Herrn aber hatte Gad angewiesen, David zu melden, David möge hinaufgehen und einen Altar für den Herrn auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan errichten.
19Da ging David hinauf nach Gads Wort, das er im Namen des Herrn ausgesprochen.
20Ornan sah wiederholt den Engel. Seine vier Söhne bei ihm aber versteckten sich. Ornan drosch gerade Weizen.
21So kam David zu Ornan. Ornan aber blickte auf und sah David. Da ging er aus der Tenne und verneigte sich vor David bis zum Boden.
22Da sprach David zu Ornan: "Gib mir den Tennenplatz, daß ich darauf für den Herrn einen Altar baue! Gib ihn mir für den vollen Betrag! Damit werde die Seuche vom Volk abgewehrt!"
23Da sprach Ornan zu David: "Nimm ihn dir! Mein Herr, der König, tue, was ihm gefällt! Ich gebe dir die Rinder zu den Brandopfern, die Dreschschlitten zum Holz und den Weizen zum Speiseopfer. All dies gebe ich dir."
24Da sprach der König David zu Ornan: "Nein! Ich will ihn um den vollen Betrag käuflich erwerben. Denn ich nehme für den Herrn nicht das weg, was dir gehört, um ein Brandopfer umsonst darzubringen.",
25So gab David dem Ornan für den Platz die Summe von 600 Goldringen.
26Dann baute David dort einen Altar für den Herrn und brachte Brand- und Dankopfer dar. Und als er den Herrn anrief, antwortete ihm dieser auf dem Brandopferaltar mit Feuer vom Himmel.
27Und der Herr befahl dem Engel, sein Schwert wieder in die Scheide zu stecken.
28Damals, als David wahrnahm, daß ihm der Herr auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan Antwort gab, opferte er dort.
29Des Herrn Wohnung aber, die Moses in der Wüste gefertigt hatte, und der Brandopferaltar waren damals auf der Höhe von Gibeon.
30David aber konnte nicht vor ihm erscheinen, Gott zu befragen. Denn er war vor dem Schwerte des Engels des Herrn erschrocken.

2Y dijo David á Joab y á los príncipes del pueblo: Id, contad á Israel desde Beer-seba hasta Dan, y traedme el número de ellos para que yo lo sepa.
3Y dijo Joab: Añada Jehová á su pueblo cien veces otros tantos. Rey señor mío, ¿no son todos estos siervos de mi señor? ¿para qué procura mi señor esto, que será pernicioso á Israel?
4Mas el mandamiento del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió por tanto Joab, y fué por todo Israel; y volvió á Jerusalem, y dió la cuenta del número del pueblo á David.
5Y hallóse en todo Israel que sacaban espada, once veces cien mil; y de Judá cuatrocientos y setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.
6Entre estos no fueron contados los Levitas, ni los hijos de Benjamín, porque Joab abominaba el mandamiento del rey.
7Asimismo desagradó este negocio á los ojos de Dios, é hirió á Israel.
8Y dijo David á Dios: He pecado gravemente en hacer esto: ruégote que hagas pasar la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque yo he hecho muy locamente.
9Y habló Jehová á Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:
10Ve, y habla á David, y dile: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge de ellas una que yo haga contigo.
11Y viniendo Gad á David, díjole: Así ha dicho Jehová:
12Escógete, ó tres años de hambre; ó ser por tres meses deshecho delante de tus enemigos, y que la espada de tus adversarios te alcance; ó por tres días la espada de Jehová y pestilencia en la tierra, y que el ángel de Jehová destruya en todo el término de Israel: mira pues qué he de responder al que me ha enviado.
13Entonces David dijo á Gad: Estoy en grande angustia: ruego que yo caiga en la mano de Jehová; porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, y que no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
14Así Jehová dió pestilencia en Israel, y cayeron de Israel setenta mil hombres.
15Y envió Jehová el ángel á Jerusalem para destruirla: pero estando él destruyendo, miró Jehová, y arrepintióse de aquel mal,
16Y dijo al ángel que destruía: Basta ya; detén tu mano. Y el ángel de Jehová estaba junto á la era de Ornán Jebuseo.
17Y alzando David sus ojos, vió al ángel de Jehová, que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, teniendo un espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalem. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, cubiertos de sacos.
18Y dijo David á Dios: ¿No soy yo el que hizo contar el pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; mas estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, sea ahora tu mano contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre, y no haya plaga en tu pueblo.
19Y el ángel de Jehová ordenó á Gad que dijese á David, que subiese y construyese un altar á Jehová en la era de Ornán Jebuseo.
20Entonces David subió, conforme á la palabra de Gad que le había dicho en nombre de Jehová.
21Y volviéndose Ornán vió al ángel; por lo que se escondieron cuatro hijos suyos que con él estaban. Y Ornán trillaba el trigo.
22Y viniendo David á Ornán, miró éste, y vió á David: y saliendo de la era, postróse en tierra á David.
23Entonces dijo David á Ornán: Dame este lugar de la era, en que edifique un altar á Jehová, y dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la plaga del pueblo.
24Y Ornán respondió á David: Tómalo para ti, y haga mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere: y aun los bueyes daré para el holocausto, y los trillos para leña, y trigo para el presente: yo lo doy todo.
25Entonces el rey David dijo á Ornán: No, sino que efectivamente la compraré por su justo precio: porque no tomaré para Jehová lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto que nada me cueste.
26Y dió David á Ornán por el lugar seiscientos siclos de oro por peso.
27Y edificó allí David un altar á Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios pacíficos, é invocó á Jehová, el cual le respondió por fuego de los cielos en el altar del holocausto.
28Y como Jehová habló al ángel, él volvió su espada á la vaina.
29Entonces viendo David que Jehová le había oído en la era de Ornán Jebuseo, sacrificó allí.
30Y el tabernáculo de Jehová que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el alto de Gabaón: Mas David no pudo ir allá á consultar á Dios, porque estaba espantado á causa de la espada del ángel de Jehová.
King James Version
1And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
8And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
9And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
12Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
13And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
14So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
18Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.
20And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
23And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
24And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
27And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
28At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.
30But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

1Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
2David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
3Joab said, “May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.
5Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
6But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
8David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
9The LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘The LORD says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
11So Gad came to David and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Take your choice:
12either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the LORD’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”
13David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
14So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
15God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, the LORD saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” the LORD’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16David lifted up his eyes, and saw the LORD’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
18Then the LORD’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the LORD’s name.
20Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
23Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
24King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
26David built an altar to the LORD there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the LORD; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
27Then the LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29For the LORD’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of the LORD’s angel.
