1Danach begab es sich, daß der Ammoniterkönig Nahas starb und sein Sohn (Hanun) ihm in der Regierung nachfolgte.
2Da dachte David: »Ich will mich freundlich gegen Hanun, den Sohn des Nahas, beweisen, weil sein Vater sich mir gegenüber freundlich bewiesen hat.« So schickte denn David Gesandte hin, um ihm sein Beileid wegen (des Todes) seines Vaters ausdrücken zu lassen. Als aber die Gesandten Davids im Lande der Ammoniter bei Hanun angekommen waren, um ihm das Beileid zu bezeugen,
3sagten die Fürsten der Ammoniter zu Hanun: »Meinst du etwa, daß David Beileidsgesandte an dich deshalb geschickt hat, um deinem Vater eine Ehre zu erweisen? Nein, offenbar sind seine Gesandten nur deshalb zu dir gekommen, um das Land gründlich auszukundschaften und um zu spionieren.«
4Da ließ Hanun die Gesandten Davids festnehmen, ließ sie scheren und ihnen die Röcke halb abschneiden bis unter den Gürtel und entließ sie dann.
5So machten sie sich denn auf den Weg. Als man nun dem David meldete, was den Männern geschehen war, schickte er ihnen Boten entgegen – denn die Männer waren schwer beschimpft –; und der König ließ ihnen sagen: »Bleibt in Jericho, bis euch der Bart wieder gewachsen ist: dann kehrt zurück!«
6Als nun die Ammoniter einsahen, daß sie David tödlich beleidigt hatten, schickten Hanun und die Ammoniter tausend Talente Silber hin, um von den Syrern in Mesopotamien und von den Syrern in Maacha und in Zoba Kriegswagen und Reiter in Sold zu nehmen.
7So nahmen sie denn 32000 Wagen in ihren Dienst, dazu den König von Maacha mit seinem Heere; die kamen und lagerten sich vor Medeba; die Ammoniter aber sammelten sich auch aus ihren Ortschaften und rückten zum Kampf ins Feld.
8Als David das erfuhr, ließ er Joab mit dem ganzen Heer, auch den Rittern, ausrücken.
9Die Ammoniter zogen dann aus der Stadt hinaus und stellten sich vor dem Stadttor in Schlachtordnung auf, während die Könige, die herbeigekommen waren, für sich im freien Felde standen.
10Als nun Joab sah, daß ihm sowohl von vorn als auch im Rücken ein Angriff drohe, nahm er aus allen auserlesenen israelitischen Kriegern eine Auswahl vor und stellte sich mit ihnen den Syrern gegenüber auf;
11den Rest des Heeres aber überwies er seinem Bruder Abisai, damit sie sich den Ammonitern gegenüber aufstellten.
12Dann sagte er: »Wenn die Syrer mir zu stark sind, so kommst du mir zu Hilfe; und wenn die Ammoniter dir überlegen sind, so komme ich dir zu Hilfe.
13Nur Mut! Wir wollen tapfer kämpfen für unser Volk und für die Städte unsers Gottes; der HERR aber möge tun, was ihm wohlgefällt!«
14Darauf rückte Joab mit der Mannschaft, die unter seinem Befehl stand, zum Angriff gegen die Syrer vor, und diese wandten sich vor ihm zur Flucht;
15und als die Ammoniter die Flucht der Syrer (vor Joab) gewahrten, flohen auch sie vor seinem Bruder Abisai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Joab aber kehrte nach Jerusalem zurück.
16Als nun die Syrer sich von den Israeliten geschlagen sahen, sandten sie Boten hin und ließen die Syrer von jenseits des Euphrats ins Feld rücken, und zwar unter der Führung Sophachs, des Feldherrn Hadaresers.
17Auf die Kunde hiervon bot David ganz Israel zum Kriege auf, überschritt den Jordan und gelangte (nach Helam). Als David sich dann den Syrern gegenüber in Schlachtordnung aufgestellt hatte und sie handgemein mit ihnen geworden waren,
18wurden die Syrer von den Israeliten in die Flucht geschlagen, und David erschlug von den Syrern 7000 Wagenkämpfer und 40000 Mann Fußvolk; auch den Feldherrn Sophach tötete er.
19Als sich nun die Leute Hadaresers von den Israeliten besiegt sahen, schlossen sie Frieden mit David und unterwarfen sich ihm. Infolgedessen hatten auch die Syrer keine Lust mehr, den Ammonitern noch Hilfe zu leisten.

1DESPUÉS de estas cosas aconteció que murió Naas rey de los hijos de Ammón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.
2Y dijo David: Haré misericordia con Hanán hijo de Naas, porque también su padre hizo conmigo misericordia. Así David envió embajadores que lo consolasen de la muerte de su padre. Mas venidos los siervos de David en la tierra de los hijos de Ammón á Hanán, para consolarle,
3Los príncipes de los hijos de Ammón dijeron á Hanán: ¿A tu parecer honra David á tu padre, que te ha enviado consoladores? ¿no vienen antes sus siervos á ti para escudriñar, é inquirir, y reconocer la tierra?
4Entonces Hanán tomó los siervos de David, y rapólos, y cortóles los vestidos por medio, hasta las nalgas, y despachólos.
5Fuéronse pues, y dada que fué la nueva á David de aquellos varones, él envió á recibirlos, porque estaban muy afrentados. E hízoles decir el rey: Estaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.
6Y viendo los hijos de Ammón que se habían hecho odiosos á David, Hanán y los hijos de Ammón enviaron mil talentos de plata, para tomar á sueldo carros y gente de á caballo de Siria de los ríos, y de la Siria de Maachâ, y de Soba.
7Y tomaron á sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maachâ y á su pueblo, los cuales vinieron y asentaron su campo delante de Medeba. Y juntáronse también los hijos de Ammón de sus ciudades, y vinieron á la guerra.
8Oyéndolo David, envió á Joab con todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.
9Y los hijos de Ammón salieron, y ordenaron su tropa á la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido, estaban por sí en el campo.
10Y viendo Joab que la haz de la batalla estaba contra él delante y á las espaldas, escogió de todos los más aventajados que había en Israel, y ordenó su escuadrón contra los Siros.
11Puso luego el resto de la gente en mano de Abisai su hermano, ordenándolos en batalla contra los Ammonitas.
12Y dijo: Si los Siros fueren más fuertes que yo, tú me salvarás; y si los Ammonitas fueren más fuertes que tú, yo te salvaré.
13Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le pareciere.
14Acercóse luego Joab y el pueblo que tenía consigo, para pelear contra los Siros; mas ellos huyeron delante de él.
15Y los hijos de Ammón, viendo que los Siros habían huído, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai su hermano, y entráronse en la ciudad. Entonces Joab se volvió á Jerusalem.
16Y viendo los Siros que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron embajadores, y trajeron á los Siros que estaban de la otra parte del río, cuyo capitán era Sophach, general del ejército de Adarezer.
17Luego que fué dado aviso á David, juntó á todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino á ellos, y ordenó contra ellos su ejército. Y como David hubo ordenado su tropa contra ellos, pelearon con él los Siros.
18Mas el Siro huyó delante de Israel; y mató David de los Siros siete mil hombres de los carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de á pie: asimismo mató á Sophach, general del ejército.
19Y viendo los Siros de Adarezer que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron paz con David, y fueron sus siervos; y nunca más quiso el Siro ayudar á los hijos de Ammón.

1Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
2And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
4Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.
7So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
8And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
9And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
10Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
11And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
13Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
14So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
15And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
18But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
19And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
World English Bible
1After this, Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place.
2David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun to comfort him.
3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”
4So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away.
5Then some people went and told David how the men were treated. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6When the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, out of Aram-maacah, and out of Zobah.
7So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people, who came and encamped near Medeba. The children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
8When David heard of it, he sent Joab with all the army of the mighty men.
9The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city; and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
10Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose some of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
11The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.
13Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do that which seems good to him.”
14So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the front of the Syrians to the battle; and they fled before him.
15When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and called out the Syrians who were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the army of Hadadezer leading them.
17David was told that, so he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, came to them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
18The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrian men seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand footmen, and also killed Shophach the captain of the army.
19When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and served him. The Syrians would not help the children of Ammon any more.
