1ZU der Zeit, da die Richter regierten, kam eine Hungersnot über das Land. Da zog ein Mann von Bethlehem in Juda mit seinem Weibe und seinen beiden Söhnen fort, um sich im Gefilde Moabs als Fremdling niederzulassen.
2Der Mann hiess Elimelech, sein Weib Naemi und seine beiden Söhne Mahlon und Chiljon, Ephrathiter aus Bethlehem in Juda; die kamen ins Gefilde Moabs und blieben daselbst.
3Da starb Elimelech, der Mann der Naemi, und sie blieb allein mit ihren beiden Söhnen.
4Die nahmen sich moabitische Frauen; die eine hiess Orpa, die andere Ruth. So wohnten sie daselbst etwa zehn Jahre.
5Darnach starben auch Mahlon und Chiljon, alle beide, und das Weib blieb nach dem Tode ihrer beiden Söhne und ihres Mannes allein.
6Da machte sie sich auf mit ihren Sohnsfrauen und kehrte aus dem Gefilde Moabs zurück; denn sie hatte daselbst erfahren, dass der Herr sich seines Volkes angenommen und ihm wieder Brot gegeben habe.
7So verliess sie den Ort, wo sie gewesen war, und ihre beiden Sohnsfrauen begleiteten sie. Als sie nun ihres Weges zogen, um ins Land Juda zurückzukehren,
8sprach Naemi zu den beiden Sohnsfrauen: Gehet nun und kehret heim, eine jede in ihrer Mutter Haus. Der Herr möge euch Liebe erweisen, wie ihr sie den Verstorbenen und mir erwiesen habt!
9Der Herr gebe euch, dass ihr eine Heimstätte findet, eine jede im Hause eines Gatten! Und sie küsste sie. Da hoben sie laut an zu weinen
10und sprachen zu ihr: Nein, wir wollen mit dir zu deinem Volke zurückkehren.
11Aber Naemi sprach: Kehret nur um, meine Töchter! Warum wollt ihr mit mir gehen? Habe ich etwa noch Söhne zu erwarten, die eure Männer werden könnten?
12Kehret um, meine Töchter, und gehet; ich bin ja zu alt, um noch eines Mannes Weib zu werden. Und wenn ich auch dächte: Es ist noch Hoffnung - ja, wenn ich noch diese Nacht eines Mannes Weib würde und sogar Söhne bekäme,
13wolltet ihr darum warten, bis sie gross geworden? Wolltet ihr euch darum einschliessen und nicht wieder heiraten? Nicht doch, meine Töchter, es ist mir bitter leid um euch, dass die Hand des Herrn mich getroffen hat.
14Da begannen sie noch mehr zu weinen; dann küsste Orpa ihre Schwiegermutter und ging, Ruth aber hängte sich an sie.
15Naemi aber sprach: Siehe, deine Schwägerin ist heimgekehrt zu ihrem Volk und zu ihrem Gott; so kehre du auch um und folge deiner Schwägerin.
16Ruth antwortete: Dringe nicht in mich, dass ich dich verlasse und von dir weg heimkehre. Wo du hingehst, da will auch ich hingehen, und wo du bleibst, da bleibe auch ich; dein Volk ist mein Volk, und dein Gott ist mein Gott.
17Wo du stirbst, da sterbe auch ich; da will auch ich begraben sein. Der Herr tue mir dies und das: nur der Tod soll mich von dir scheiden!
18Als Naemi nun sah, dass sie darauf beharrte, mit ihr zu gehen, liess sie ab, ihr zuzureden.
19So gingen die beiden dahin, bis sie nach Bethlehem kamen. Und als sie in Bethlehem ankamen, geriet die ganze Stadt ihretwegen in Bewegung, und die Frauen sprachen: Ist das nicht die Naemi?
20Sie aber sprach zu ihnen: Heisst mich nicht Naemi, heisst mich Mara; denn der Allmächtige hat viel Bitteres über mich verhängt. (1) d.i. die Liebliche. (2) d.i. die Bittere.
21Reich bin ich ausgezogen, und arm hat mich der Herr zurückgebracht. Warum heisst ihr mich Naemi, da doch der Herr gegen mich gezeugt, der Allmächtige mir Übles beschieden hat?
22So kehrte Naemi mit der Moabiterin Ruth, ihrer Sohnsfrau, aus dem Gefilde Moabs zurück, und da sie in Bethlehem ankamen, begann gerade die Gerstenernte.

1Y ACONTECIÓ en los días que gobernaban los jueces, que hubo hambre en la tierra. Y un varón de Beth-lehem de Judá, fué á peregrinar en los campos de Moab, él y su mujer, y dos hijos suyos.
2El nombre de aquel varón era Elimelech, y el de su mujer Noemi; y los nombres de sus dos hijos eran, Mahalón y Chelión, Ephrateos de Beth-lehem de Judá. Llegaron pues á los campos de Moab, y asentaron allí.
3Y murió Elimelech, marido de Noemi, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos;
4Los cuales tomaron para sí mujeres de Moab, el nombre de la una Orpha, y el nombre de la otra Ruth; y habitaron allí unos diez años.
5Y murieron también los dos, Mahalón y Chelión, quedando así la mujer desamparada de sus dos hijos y de su marido.
6Entonces se levantó con sus nueras, y volvióse de los campos de Moab: porque oyó en el campo de Moab que Jehová había visitado á su pueblo para darles pan.
7Salió pues del lugar donde había estado, y con ella sus dos nueras, y comenzaron á caminar para volverse á la tierra de Judá.
8Y Noemi dijo á sus dos nueras: Andad, volveos cada una á la casa de su madre: Jehová haga con vosotras misericordia, como la habéis hecho con los muertos y conmigo.
9Déos Jehová que halléis descanso, cada una en casa de su marido: besólas luego, y ellas lloraron á voz en grito.
10Y dijéronle: Ciertamente nosotras volveremos contigo á tu pueblo.
11Y Noemi respondió: Volveos, hijas mías: ¿para qué habéis de ir conmigo? ¿tengo yo más hijos en el vientre, que puedan ser vuestros maridos?
12Volveos, hijas mías, é idos; que yo ya soy vieja para ser para varón. Y aunque dijese: Esperanza tengo; y esta noche fuese con varón, y aun pariese hijos;
13¿Habíais vosotras de esperarlos hasta que fuesen grandes? ¿habías vosotras de quedaros sin casar por amor de ellos? No, hijas mías; que mayor amargura tengo yo que vosotras, pues la mano de Jehová ha salido contra mí.
14Mas ellas alzando otra vez su voz, lloraron: y Orpha besó á su suegra, mas Ruth se quedó con ella.
15Y Noemi dijo: He aquí tu cuñada se ha vuelto á su pueblo y á sus dioses; vuélvete tú tras ella.
16Y Ruth respondió: No me ruegues que te deje, y me aparte de ti: porque donde quiera que tú fueres, iré yo; y donde quiera que vivieres, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios mi Dios.
17Donde tú murieres, moriré yo, y allí seré sepultada: así me haga Jehová, y así me dé, que sólo la muerte hará separación entre mí y ti.
18Y viendo Noemi que estaba tan resuelta á ir con ella, dejó de hablarle.
19Anduvieron pues ellas dos hasta que llegaron á Beth-lehem: y aconteció que entrando en Beth-lehem, toda la ciudad se conmovió por razón de ellas, y decían: ¿No es ésta Noemi?
20Y ella les respondía: No me llaméis Noemi, sino llamadme Mara: porque en grande amargura me ha puesto el Todopoderoso.
21Yo me fuí llena, mas vacía me ha vuelto Jehová. ¿Por qué me llamaréis Noemi, ya que Jehová ha dado testimonio contra mí, y el Todopoderoso me ha afligido?
22Así volvió Noemi y Ruth Moabita su nuera con ella; volvió de los campos de Moab, y llegaron á Beth-lehem en el principio de la siega de las cebadas.

1Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
5And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
6Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
7Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
8And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
11And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
13Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
14And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
15And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
16And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
17Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
18When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
19So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
20And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
22So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
World English Bible
1In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons.
2The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.
3Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.
4They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.
5Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.
6Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
7She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
8Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
9May the LORD grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.
10They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”
11Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons,
13would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for the LORD’s hand has gone out against me.”
14They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her.
15She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”
16Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.
17Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”
18When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
19So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”
20She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
21I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”
22So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
