1A l'époque où gouvernaient les Juges, il y eut une famine dans le pays; un homme quitta alors Bethléem en Juda pour aller séjourner dans les plaines de Moab, lui, sa femme et ses deux fils.
2Le nom de cet homme était Elimélec, celui de sa femme Noémi; ses deux fils s'appelaient Mahlon et Kilion; c'étaient des Ephratites de Bethléem en Juda. Arrivés sur le territoire de Moab, ils s'y fixèrent.
3Elimélec, l'époux de Noémi, y mourut, et elle resta seule avec ses deux fils.
4Ceux-ci épousèrent des femmes moabites, dont l'une s'appelait Orpa et l'autre Ruth; et ils demeurèrent ensemble une dizaine d'années.
5Puis Mahlon et Kilion moururent à leur tour tous deux, et la femme resta seule, privée de ses deux enfants et de son mari.
6Elle se disposa alors, ainsi que ses brus, à abandonner les plaines de Moab; car elle avait appris dans les plaines de Moab que l'Eternel, s'étant ressouvenu de son peuple, lui avait donné du pain.
7Elle sortit donc de l'endroit qu'elle avait habité, accompagnée de ses deux brus; mais une fois qu'elles se furent mises en route pour revenir au pays de Juda,
8Noémi dit à ses deux brus: "Rebroussez chemin et rentrez chacune dans la maison de sa mère. Puisse le Seigneur vous rendre l'affection que vous avez témoignée aux défunts et à moi!
9Qu'à toutes deux l'Éternel fasse retrouver une vie paisible dans la demeure d'un nouvel époux!" Elle les embrassa, mais elles élevèrent la voix en sanglotant,
10et lui dirent: "Non, avec toi nous voulons nous rendre auprès de ton peuple."
11Noémi reprit: "Rebroussez chemin, mes filles; pourquoi viendriez-vous avec moi? Ai-je encore des fils dans mes entrailles, qui puissent devenir vos époux?
12Allez, mes filles, retournez-vous-en, car je suis trop âgée pour être à un époux. Dussé-je même me dire qu'il est encore de l'espoir pour moi, que je pourrais appartenir cette nuit à un homme et avoir des enfants,
13voudriez-vous attendre qu'ils fussent devenus grands, persévérer dans le veuvage à cause d'eux et refuser toute autre union? Non, mes filles, j'en serais profondément peinée pour vous, car, Ia main du Seigneur s'est appesantie sur moi."
14De nouveau elles élevèrent la voix et sanglotèrent longtemps; puis Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère, tandis que Ruth s'attachait à ses pas.
15Alors Noémi dit: "Vois, ta belle-sœur est retournée à sa famille et à son dieu; retourne toi aussi et suis ta belle-sœur."
16Mais Ruth répliqua: "N'insiste pas près de moi, pour que je te quitte et m'éloigne de toi; car partout où tu iras, j'irai; où tu demeureras, je veux demeurer; ton peuple sera mon peuple et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu;
17là où tu mourras, je veux mourir aussi et y être enterrée. Que l'Eternel m'en fasse autant et plus, si jamais je me sépare de toi autrement que par la mort!"
18Noémi, voyant qu'elle était fermement décidée à l'accompagner, cessa d'insister près d'elle.
19Elles marchèrent donc ensemble jusqu'à leur arrivée à Bethléem. Quand elles entrèrent à Bethléem, toute la ville fut en émoi à cause d'elles, et les femmes s'écrièrent: "N'est-ce pas Noémi?"
20Elle leur dit: "Ne m'appelez plus Noémi, appelez-moi Mara, car l'Eternel m'a abreuvée d'amertume.
21Je suis partie d'ici comblée de biens, et le Seigneur me ramène les mains vides. Pourquoi me nommeriez-vous Noémi, alors que l'Eternel m'a humiliée et que le Tout-Puissant m'a infligé des malheurs?"
22C'est ainsi que Noémi était revenue des plaines de Moab, accompagnée de sa bru, Ruth la Moabite. Le moment de leur arrivée à Bethléem coïncidait avec le début de la moisson des orges.

1Y ACONTECIÓ en los días que gobernaban los jueces, que hubo hambre en la tierra. Y un varón de Beth-lehem de Judá, fué á peregrinar en los campos de Moab, él y su mujer, y dos hijos suyos.
2El nombre de aquel varón era Elimelech, y el de su mujer Noemi; y los nombres de sus dos hijos eran, Mahalón y Chelión, Ephrateos de Beth-lehem de Judá. Llegaron pues á los campos de Moab, y asentaron allí.
3Y murió Elimelech, marido de Noemi, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos;
4Los cuales tomaron para sí mujeres de Moab, el nombre de la una Orpha, y el nombre de la otra Ruth; y habitaron allí unos diez años.
5Y murieron también los dos, Mahalón y Chelión, quedando así la mujer desamparada de sus dos hijos y de su marido.
6Entonces se levantó con sus nueras, y volvióse de los campos de Moab: porque oyó en el campo de Moab que Jehová había visitado á su pueblo para darles pan.
7Salió pues del lugar donde había estado, y con ella sus dos nueras, y comenzaron á caminar para volverse á la tierra de Judá.
8Y Noemi dijo á sus dos nueras: Andad, volveos cada una á la casa de su madre: Jehová haga con vosotras misericordia, como la habéis hecho con los muertos y conmigo.
9Déos Jehová que halléis descanso, cada una en casa de su marido: besólas luego, y ellas lloraron á voz en grito.
10Y dijéronle: Ciertamente nosotras volveremos contigo á tu pueblo.
11Y Noemi respondió: Volveos, hijas mías: ¿para qué habéis de ir conmigo? ¿tengo yo más hijos en el vientre, que puedan ser vuestros maridos?
12Volveos, hijas mías, é idos; que yo ya soy vieja para ser para varón. Y aunque dijese: Esperanza tengo; y esta noche fuese con varón, y aun pariese hijos;
13¿Habíais vosotras de esperarlos hasta que fuesen grandes? ¿habías vosotras de quedaros sin casar por amor de ellos? No, hijas mías; que mayor amargura tengo yo que vosotras, pues la mano de Jehová ha salido contra mí.
14Mas ellas alzando otra vez su voz, lloraron: y Orpha besó á su suegra, mas Ruth se quedó con ella.
15Y Noemi dijo: He aquí tu cuñada se ha vuelto á su pueblo y á sus dioses; vuélvete tú tras ella.
16Y Ruth respondió: No me ruegues que te deje, y me aparte de ti: porque donde quiera que tú fueres, iré yo; y donde quiera que vivieres, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios mi Dios.
17Donde tú murieres, moriré yo, y allí seré sepultada: así me haga Jehová, y así me dé, que sólo la muerte hará separación entre mí y ti.
18Y viendo Noemi que estaba tan resuelta á ir con ella, dejó de hablarle.
19Anduvieron pues ellas dos hasta que llegaron á Beth-lehem: y aconteció que entrando en Beth-lehem, toda la ciudad se conmovió por razón de ellas, y decían: ¿No es ésta Noemi?
20Y ella les respondía: No me llaméis Noemi, sino llamadme Mara: porque en grande amargura me ha puesto el Todopoderoso.
21Yo me fuí llena, mas vacía me ha vuelto Jehová. ¿Por qué me llamaréis Noemi, ya que Jehová ha dado testimonio contra mí, y el Todopoderoso me ha afligido?
22Así volvió Noemi y Ruth Moabita su nuera con ella; volvió de los campos de Moab, y llegaron á Beth-lehem en el principio de la siega de las cebadas.

1Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
5And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
6Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
7Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
8And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
11And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
13Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
14And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
15And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
16And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
17Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
18When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
19So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
20And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
22So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
World English Bible
1In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons.
2The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.
3Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.
4They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.
5Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.
6Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
7She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
8Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
9May the LORD grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.
10They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”
11Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons,
13would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for the LORD’s hand has gone out against me.”
14They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her.
15She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”
16Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.
17Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”
18When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
19So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”
20She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
21I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”
22So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
