1O que digo é a verdade. Sou de Cristo e não minto; pois a minha consciência, que é controlada pelo Espírito Santo, também confirma que não minto.
2Meu coração está abatido dentro de mim, e eu me entristeço amargamente no meu coração
3por causa do meu povo, que é a minha raça e o meu sangue. Para o bem desse povo eu digo que estaria pronto a ser condenado eternamente, se isso pudesse salvá-los.
4Ó povo de Israel, Deus lhes deu tanto, mas vocês ainda não querem escutá-lo. Vocês foram adotados como filhos, receberam a glória divina e a aliança. Ele deu-lhes suas leis, a fim de que soubessem o que ele desejava que vocês fizessem. Permitiu que o adorassem no templo, e deu-lhes promessas maravilhosas.
5Vocês são descendentes dos patriarcas, e a partir deles se traça a linhagem humana do próprio Cristo, que é Deus que reina sobre todas as coisas. Glória a Deus para sempre. Amém.
6Bem, então as promessas de Deus a Israel ficaram sem valor? Naturalmente que não. Nem todo aquele que é nascido de família judaica é verdadeiramente judeu.
7O simples fato de terem vindo da descendência de Abraão não os faz, na verdade, filhos de Abraão. As Escrituras dizem que as promessas se destinam somente ao filho de Abraão, Isaque, e aos descendentes de Isaque.
8Isso significa que nem todos os filhos de Abraão são filhos de Deus, mas somente aqueles que creem na promessa de salvação que ele fez a Abraão.
9Deus havia prometido: “No tempo devido darei um filho a você e Sara”.
10E, anos mais tarde, os dois filhos de Rebeca tinham o mesmo pai, o nosso antepassado Isaque.
11E antes mesmo que as crianças tivessem nascido, antes que tivessem feito qualquer coisa boa ou má — a fim de que o propósito de Deus conforme a eleição permanecesse,
12não por causa do que os filhos fizeram, mas por aquele que chama — Deus disse a ela que Esaú, o filho que nasceria primeiro, seria servo de Jacó, seu irmão gêmeo.
13Como está escrito: “Escolhi amar Jacó, e não Esaú”.
14Será que Deus estava sendo injusto? Claro que não.
15Deus disse a Moisés: “Terei misericórdia de quem eu quiser ter misericórdia, e me compadecerei de quem eu quiser me compadecer”.
16Assim, as misericórdias de Deus não são dadas só porque alguém decide recebê-las ou trabalhar arduamente para consegui-las. São dadas porque Deus tem misericórdia de quem ele quer ter.
17Pois a Escritura diz ao faraó, rei do Egito: “Mas conservei a sua vida para mostrar-lhe o meu poder, e para anunciar o meu nome em toda a terra”.
18Assim, vocês percebem que Deus tem misericórdia de quem ele quer, e faz que outros se recusem a ouvi-lo.
19Mas algum de vocês me dirá: “Então por que Deus os culpa por não o ouvirem? Pois quem resiste à sua vontade?”
20Mas quem são vocês homens para criticarem a Deus? Acaso aquilo que é formado pode dizer àquele que o fez: “Por que é que você me fez deste jeito?”
21Quando o oleiro faz um vaso de barro, ele não tem o direito de usar o mesmo barro para fazer um vaso bonito para uso especial, e outro para uso comum?
22Será que Deus não tem perfeitamente o direito de mostrar a sua ira e o seu poder contra aqueles que estão prontos para a destruição, aqueles com quem ele tem sido paciente todo esse tempo?
23E ele também quis mostrar como é grande a sua glória, que ele derramou sobre nós, que somos aqueles de quem ele teve misericórdia, que ele havia preparado para receberem a sua glória.
24Pois nós somos aqueles a quem ele também chamou, quer sejamos judeus ou gentios.
25Como diz a profecia de Oseias: “Aqueles que não eram meu povo eu chamarei de ‘meu povo’. A nação que eu não amava chamarei de ‘minha amada’ ”.
26“E no mesmo lugar onde certa vez foi dito: ‘Vocês não são meu povo’, eles serão chamados ‘filhos do Deus vivo’ ”.
27O profeta Isaías, falando de Israel, clamava que embora houvesse milhões deles, somente um remanescente seria salvo.
28“Pois o Senhor executará sua sentença sobre a terra, e apressará o seu intento”.
29E, em outra parte, disse Isaías: “Se o Senhor Todo-poderoso não tivesse poupado alguns de nós, já estaríamos completamente arrasados como Sodoma e Gomorra”.
30Bem, então que vamos dizer disso tudo? Tão somente isto: Que Deus deu aos gentios a oportunidade de obterem uma justiça que vem da fé, muito embora eles não estivessem realmente buscando a justiça.
31E os israelitas, porém, que tão arduamente buscavam uma lei que trouxesse justiça, nunca tiveram resultado.
32E por que não? Porque não a buscavam pela fé, mas por meio de suas boas ações. Assim, tropeçaram na pedra de tropeço.
33Deus os advertiu disso nas Escrituras, quando disse: “Eu coloquei em Sião uma pedra, uma pedra de tropeço e uma rocha que vai fazê-los cair; aquele que nela confia, jamais será abalado”.

1VERDAD digo en Cristo, no miento, dándome testimonio mi conciencia en el Espíritu Santo,
2Que tengo gran tristeza y continuo dolor en mi corazón.
3Porque deseara yo mismo ser apartado de Cristo por mis hermanos, los que son mis parientes según la carne;
4Que son israelitas, de los cuales es la adopción, y la gloria, y el pacto, y la data de la ley, y el culto, y las promesas;
5Cuyos son los padres, y de los cuales es Cristo según la carne, el cual es Dios sobre todas las cosas, bendito por los siglos. Amén.
6No empero que la palabra de Dios haya faltado: porque no todos los que son de Israel son Israelitas;
7Ni por ser simiente de Abraham, son todos hijos; mas: En Isaac te será llamada simiente.
8Quiere decir: No los que son hijos de la carne, éstos son los hijos de Dios; mas los que son hijos de la promesa, son contados en la generación.
9Porque la palabra de la promesa es esta: Como en este tiempo vendré, y tendrá Sara un hijo.
10Y no sólo esto; mas también Rebeca concibiendo de uno, de Isaac nuestro padre,
11(Porque no siendo aún nacidos, ni habiendo hecho aún ni bien ni mal, para que el propósito de Dios conforme á la elección, no por las obras sino por el que llama, permaneciese;)
12Le fué dicho que el mayor serviría al menor.
13Como está escrito: A Jacob amé, mas á Esaú aborrecí.
14¿Pues qué diremos? ¿Que hay injusticia en Dios? En ninguna manera.
15Mas á Moisés dice: Tendré misericordia del que tendré misericordia, y me compadeceré del que me compadeceré.
16Así que no es del que quiere, ni del que corre, sino de Dios que tiene misericordia.
17Porque la Escritura dice de Faraón: Que para esto mismo te he levantado, para mostrar en ti mi potencia, y que mi nombre sea anunciado por toda la tierra.
18De manera que del que quiere tiene misericordia; y al que quiere, endurece.
19Me dirás pues: ¿Por qué, pues, se enoja? porque ¿quién resistirá á su voluntad?
20Mas antes, oh hombre, ¿quién eres tú, para que alterques con Dios? Dirá el vaso de barro al que le labró: ¿Por qué me has hecho tal?
21¿O no tiene potestad el alfarero para hacer de la misma masa un vaso para honra, y otro para vergüenza?
22¿Y qué, si Dios, queriendo mostrar la ira y hacer notoria su potencia, soportó con mucha mansedumbre los vasos de ira preparados para muerte,
23Y para hacer notorias las riquezas de su gloria, mostrólas para con los vasos de misericordia que él ha preparado para gloria;
24Los cuales también ha llamado, es á saber, á nosotros, no sólo de los Judíos, mas también de los Gentiles?
25Como también en Oseas dice: Llamaré al que no era mi pueblo, pueblo mío; y á la no amada, amada.
26Y será, que en el lugar donde les fué dicho: Vosotros no sois pueblo mío: allí serán llamados hijos del Dios viviente.
27También Isaías clama tocante á Israel: Si fuere el número de los hijos de Israel como la arena de la mar, las reliquias serán salvas:
28Porque palabra consumadora y abreviadora en justicia, porque palabra abreviada, hará el Señor sobre la tierra.
29Y como antes dijo Isaías: Si el Señor de los ejércitos no nos hubiera dejado simiente, como Sodoma habríamos venido á ser, y á Gomorra fuéramos semejantes.
30¿Pues qué diremos? Que los Gentiles que no seguían justicia, han alcanzado la justicia, es á saber, la justicia que es por la fe;
31Mas Israel que seguía la ley de justicia, no ha llegado á la ley de justicia.
32¿Por qué? Porque la seguían no por fe, mas como por las obras de la ley: por lo cual tropezaron en la piedra de tropiezo,
33Como está escrito: He aquí pongo en Sión piedra de tropiezo, y piedra de caída; y aquel que creyere en ella, no será avergonzado.

1I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

22What if God, willing to show his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
23and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory—
24us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?
25As he says also in Hosea, “I will call them ‘my people,’ which were not my people; and her ‘beloved,’ who was not beloved.”
26“It will be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”
27Isaiah cries concerning Israel, “If the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant who will be saved;
28for he will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.”
29As Isaiah has said before, “Unless the Lord of Armies had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and would have been made like Gomorrah.”
30What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who didn’t follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith;
31but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at the law of righteousness.
32Why? Because they didn’t seek it by faith, but as it were by works of the law. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,
33even as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock of offense; and no one who believes in him will be disappointed.”
