1Give ear, O my people, to mine instruction, Bend your ear to the sayings of my mouth;
2I will open, in a parable, my mouth, I will pour forth enigmas out of antiquity;—
3Which we have heard, and come to know, And, our fathers, have recounted to us;
4We will not withhold them from their children, To a later generation, recounting the praises of Yahweh, Even his might and his wonders which he wrought;
5When he set up a testimony in Jacob, And, a law, appointed in Israel,—Which he commanded our fathers, That they might make them known to their children;
6To the end, A later generation, might come to know, Children who should be born, Who should arise, and recount them to their children;
7That they might set, in Elohim, their confidence,—And not forget the doings of El, But, his commandments, might observe;
8And not become, like their fathers, a generation stubborn and rebellious,—A generation that fixed not their heart, Neither was their spirit, faithful with GOD.
9The sons of Ephraim—armed bowmen, Turned in the day of battle;
10They kept not the covenant of God, And, in his law, refused to walk;
11And forgat His doings, And his wonders which he had showed them:
12In presence of their fathers, wrought he, wondrously,—In the land of Egypt—the field of Zoan:
13He clave the sea, and caused them to pass through, And reared up the waters like a mound;
14And led them, by a cloud, in the daytime, And all the night, by a light of fire;
15He used to cleave rocks in the desert, And let them drink as out of mighty deeps;
16And he brought forth streams out of the cliff, And caused waters to flow down, like rivers.
17But again, once more sinned they against him, Resisting the Most High in a land of drought:
18They put GOD to the proof in their heart, By asking food to their mind:
19Yea they spake against Elohim,—They said, Can GOD prepare a table in the desert?
20Lo! he hath smitten a rock, And waters, have gushed out, Yea, torrents, have rushed along,—Food also, can he give? Or provide flesh for his people?
21Therefore, Yahweh hearkened, and became wroth,—And, a fire, was kindled against Jacob, Moreover also, anger, mounted against Israel;
22Because, They believed not in God, Nor trusted in his salvation;
23Though he had commanded the skies above, And, the doors of the heavens, had opened;
24And had rained on them manna to eat, And, the corn of the heavens, had given to them:
25The food of the mighty, each one did eat, Nourishment, sent he them to the full;
26He let loose an east wind in the heavens, Then guided he, in his might, a south wind;
27And rained upon them flesh as the dust, And, like the sand of the seas, birds of wing;
28And let them fall in the midst of their camp,—Round about their habitations.
29So they did eat and were abundantly filled, When, what they longed for, he had brought them:—
30They had not turned away from what they had longed for, Yet was their food in their mouth,
31When, the anger of God, mounted against them, And he slew of their vigorous youths, And, the choice young men of Israel, caused he to bow down in death.
32For all this, sinned they still, And believed not in his wonders;
33So he ended, in a breath, their days, And their years, in a sudden terror!
34If he slew of them, then they sought him, Yea they turned, and did earnestly seek GOD;
35And remembered that, Elohim, was their rock, Yea, EL Most High, their Redeemer:
36So they spake him fair with their mouth, And, with their tongue, did promise him falsely;
37But, their heart, was not fixed with him, Nor were they trusty in his covenant:
38Yet, he, full of compassion, would put a propitiatory-covering over iniquity, and not destroy,—Yea, many a time, turned he back his anger, And would not stir up all his wrath.
39So then he remembered, That, Flesh, they were, A Wind departing, that returneth not.
40How often they, Resisted him in the desert, Vexed him, in the waste:
41Yea they again put GOD to the test, And, to the Holy One of Israel, caused they sorrow:
42They remembered not his hand—The day, When he ransomed them from the adversary;
43When he set, in Egypt, his signs, And his wonders, in the plain of Zoan;
44When he turned, into blood, their Nile-streams, And, their own rivers, could they not drink;
45He sent among them, The gad-fly, and it devoured them, And the frog, and it despoiled them;
46When he gave to the corn-locust their produce, And their toil, to the swarming locust;
47He killed, with hail, their vine, And their sycomores, with frost:
48When he gave up, to hail-storms, their beasts, And their cattle, to pestilent fevers;
49He sent among them the heat of his anger, Wrath and indignation and distress,—A mission of messengers of misfortune:
50He leveled a path for his anger, Withheld not, from death, their soul, But, their life—to the pestilence, he delivered:
51So he smote, Every first-born in Egypt, The beginning of their strength, in the tents of Ham;
52And he set forth, like sheep, his people, And guided them, like a flock in the desert;
53Yea he led them securely, and they dreaded not, And, their enemies, the sea did cover.
54Then brought he them within his own holy bounds, The mountain-range, which his right hand made his own:
55So he drave out, before them, whole nations, And allotted them, by line, an inheritance, And caused to dwell, in their own homes, the tribes of Israel.
56But they tested and resisted God Most High, And, his testimonies, did not observe;
57But drew back and dealt treacherously, like their fathers, They turned aside, like deceitful bowmen;
58And provoked him to anger with their high places, And, with their images, used to move him to jealousy.
59God heard and was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;
60So he gave up the habitation of Shiloh, The tent he had set up among Men;
61Yea he gave up, into captivity, his strength, And his beauty into the hand of an adversary;
62And delivered up, to the sword, his people, And, with his own inheritance, was he wroth;
63His young men, were devoured by fire, And, his virgins, were not praised in song;
64His priests, by the sword, did fall, And, his widows, were not able to bewail.
65Then awoke, as one that had slept, Adonay, As a warrior exulting with wine!
66So he smote his adversaries in the rear, Reproach age-abiding, laid he upon them.
67Howbeit he rejected the tent of Joseph, And, the tribe of Ephraim, did not choose:
68But made choice of the tribe of Judah, The mountain of Zion, which he loved;
69And built, like the heights, his sanctuary, Like the earth, he founded it to times age-abiding.
70And made choice of David his servant, And took him from among the folds of the sheep:
71From after the sucking ewes, he brought him in,—To be shepherd to Jacob his people, And to Israel, his inheritance.
72So he did shepherd them, according to the singleness of his heart, And, with the discernment of his hands, used he to guide them.

1Masquil de Asaph. ESCUCHA, pueblo mío, mi ley: inclinad vuestro oído á las palabras de mi boca.
2Abriré mi boca en parábola; hablaré cosas reservadas de antiguo:
3Las cuales hemos oído y entendido; que nuestros padres nos las contaron.
4No las encubriremos á sus hijos, contando á la generación venidera las alabanzas de Jehová, y su fortaleza, y sus maravillas que hizo.
5El estableció testimonio en Jacob, y pusó ley en Israel; la cual mandó á nuestros padres que la notificasen á sus hijos;
6Para que lo sepa la generación venidera, y los hijos que nacerán; y los que se levantarán, lo cuenten á sus hijos;
7A fin de que pongan en Dios su confianza, y no se olviden de las obras de Dios, y guarden sus mandamientos:
8Y no sean como sus padres, generación contumaz y rebelde; generación que no apercibió su corazón, ni fué fiel para con Dios su espíritu.
9Los hijos de Ephraim armados, flecheros, volvieron las espaldas el día de la batalla.
10No guardaron el pacto de Dios, ni quisieron andar en su ley:
11Antes se olvidaron de sus obras, y de sus maravillas que les había mostrado.
12Delante de sus padres hizo maravillas en la tierra de Egipto, en el campo de Zoán.
13Rompió la mar, é hízolos pasar; é hizo estar las aguas como en un montón.
14Y llevólos de día con nube, y toda la noche con resplandor de fuego.
15Hendió las peñas en el desierto: y dióles á beber como de grandes abismos;
16Pues sacó de la peña corrientes, é hizo descender aguas como ríos.
17Empero aun tornaron á pecar contra él, enojando en la soledad al Altísimo.
18Pues tentaron á Dios en su corazón, pidiendo comida á su gusto.
19Y hablaron contra Dios, diciendo: ¿Podrá poner mesa en el desierto?
20He aquí ha herido la peña, y corrieron aguas, y arroyos salieron ondeando: ¿podrá también dar pan? ¿aparejará carne á su pueblo?
21Por tanto oyó Jehová, é indignóse: y encendióse el fuego contra Jacob, y el furor subió también contra Israel;
22Por cuanto no habían creído á Dios, ni habían confiado en su salud:
23A pesar de que mandó á las nubes de arriba, y abrió las puertas de los cielos,
24E hizo llover sobre ellos maná para comer, y dióles trigo de los cielos.
25Pan de nobles comió el hombre: envióles comida á hartura.
26Movió el solano en el cielo, y trajo con su fortaleza el austro.
27E hizo llover sobre ellos carne como polvo, y aves de alas como arena de la mar.
28E hízolas caer en medio de su campo, alrededor de sus tiendas.
29Y comieron, y hartáronse mucho: cumplióles pues su deseo.
30No habían quitado de sí su deseo, aun estaba su vianda en su boca,
31Cuando vino sobre ellos el furor de Dios, y mató los más robustos de ellos, y derribó los escogidos de Israel.
32Con todo esto pecaron aún, y no dieron crédito á sus maravillas.
33Consumió por tanto en nada sus días, y sus años en la tribulación.
34Si los mataba, entonces buscaban á Dios; entonces se volvían solícitos en busca suya.
35Y acordábanse que Dios era su refugio, y el Dios Alto su redentor.
36Mas le lisonjeaban con su boca, y con su lengua le mentían:
37Pues sus corazones no eran rectos con él, ni estuvieron firmes en su pacto.
38Empero él misericordioso, perdonaba la maldad, y no los destruía: y abundó para apartar su ira, y no despertó todo su enojo.
39Y acordóse que eran carne; soplo que va y no vuelve.
40¡Cuántas veces lo ensañaron en el desierto, lo enojaron en la soledad!
41Y volvían, y tentaban á Dios, y ponían límite al Santo de Israel.
42No se acordaron de su mano, del día que los redimió de angustia;
43Cuando puso en Egipto sus señales, y sus maravillas en el campo de Zoán;
44Y volvió sus ríos en sangre, y sus corrientes, porque no bebiesen.
45Envió entre ellos una mistura de moscas que los comían, y ranas que los destruyeron.
46Dió también al pulgón sus frutos, y sus trabajos á la langosta.
47Sus viñas destruyó con granizo, y sus higuerales con piedra;
48Y entregó al pedrisco sus bestias, y al fuego sus ganados.
49Envió sobre ellos el furor de su saña, ira y enojo y angustia, con misión de malos ángeles.
50Dispuso el camino á su furor; no eximió la vida de ellos de la muerte, sino que entregó su vida á la mortandad.
51E hirió á todo primogénito en Egipto, las primicias de las fuerzas en las tiendas de Châm.
52Empero hizo salir á su pueblo como ovejas, y llevólos por el desierto, como un rebaño.
53Y guiólos con seguridad, que no tuvieron miedo; y la mar cubrió á sus enemigos.
54Metiólos después en los términos de su santuario, en este monte que ganó su mano derecha.
55Y echó las gentes de delante de ellos, y repartióles una herencia con cuerdas; é hizo habitar en sus moradas á las tribus de Israel.
56Mas tentaron y enojaron al Dios Altísimo, y no guardaron sus testimonios;
57Sino que se volvieron, y se rebelaron como sus padres: volviéronse como arco engañoso.
58Y enojáronlo con sus altos, y provocáronlo á celo con sus esculturas.
59Oyólo Dios, y enojóse, y en gran manera aborreció á Israel.
60Dejó por tanto el tabernáculo de Silo, la tienda en que habitó entre los hombres;
61Y dió en cautividad su fortaleza, y su gloria en mano del enemigo.
62Entregó también su pueblo á cuchillo, y airóse contra su heredad.
63El fuego devoró sus mancebos, y sus vírgenes no fueron loadas en cantos nupciales.
64Sus sacerdotes cayeron á cuchillo, y sus viudas no lamentaron.
65Entonces despertó el Señor á la manera del que ha dormido, como un valiente que grita excitado del vino:
66E hirió á sus enemigos en las partes posteriores: dióles perpetua afrenta.
67Y desechó el tabernáculo de José, y no escogió la tribu de Ephraim;
68Sino que escogió la tribu de Judá, el monte de Sión, al cual amó.
69Y edificó su santuario á manera de eminencia, como la tierra que cimentó para siempre.
70Y eligió á David su siervo, y tomólo de las majadas de las ovejas:
71De tras las paridas lo trajo, para que apacentase á Jacob su pueblo, y á Israel su heredad.

7That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

34When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
38But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
40How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

49He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
50He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

67Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

3which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.
5For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
6that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,
7that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,
8and might not be as their fathers— a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
