Al ver que no había suficiente agua en aquel lugar, el pueblo nuevamente se rebeló contra Moisés y Aarón,

Deliberadamente nos trajiste a este desierto para que muramos nosotros, nuestras vacas y ovejas.
¿Y por qué hiciste venir la congregación de Jehová á este desierto, para que muramos aquí nosotros y nuestras bestias?
And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?
¿Por qué nos hiciste salir de Egipto y nos trajiste a este lugar tan malo? ¿Dónde están las tierras fértiles, las cosechas maravillosas, los higos, los viñedos, y el ganado que decías que encontraríamos? Aquí ni siquiera hay agua para beber».
¿Y por qué nos has hecho subir de Egipto, para traernos á este mal lugar? No es lugar de sementera, de higueras, de viñas, ni granadas: ni aun de agua para beber.
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

Moisés y Aarón se apartaron y fueron a la entrada del santuario donde se postraron sobre sus rostros delante del Señor; y la gloria del Señor se les apareció.
Y fuéronse Moisés y Aarón de delante de la congregación á la puerta del tabernáculo del testimonio, y echáronse sobre sus rostros; y la gloria de Jehová apareció sobre ellos.

Toma la vara, y reune la congregación, tú y Aarón tu hermano, y hablad á la peña en ojos de ellos; y ella dará su agua, y les sacarás aguas de la peña, y darás de beber á la congregación, y á sus bestias.
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
“Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”
Moisés hizo lo que se le había ordenado: Tomó la vara del lugar donde era guardada delante del Señor,

Moisés levantó la vara y golpeó la roca dos veces y el agua brotó, y el pueblo y el ganado bebieron.

Pero el Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: «Por cuanto no me creyeron ni me honraron delante del pueblo de Israel, no serán ustedes quienes los conduzcan a la tierra que yo les he prometido».
Y Jehová dijo á Moisés y á Aarón: Por cuanto no creísteis en mí, para santificarme en ojos de los hijos de Israel, por tanto, no meteréis esta congregación en la tierra que les he dado.
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”
El lugar fue llamado Meribá (Aguas de la rencillas), porque allí el pueblo de Israel se rebeló contra el Señor, y allí les mostró que era un Dios santo.
Estas son las aguas de la rencilla, por las cuales contendieron los hijos de Israel con Jehová, y él se santificó en ellos.

Nuestros antepasados tuvieron que emigrar a Egipto y se quedaron allí por mucho tiempo, y luego los egipcios los esclavizaron.

Permítenos pasar por tu país. Prometemos no pasar por los plantíos ni por los viñedos; ni siquiera beberemos agua de tus pozos. No nos saldremos del camino principal y no lo dejaremos hasta que hayamos cruzado la frontera al otro lado».
Rogámoste que pasemos por tu tierra; no pasaremos por labranza, ni por viña, ni beberemos agua de pozos: por el camino real iremos, sin apartarnos á la diestra ni á la siniestra, hasta que hayamos pasado tu término.
Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

Pero el rey de Edom le respondió: «No permitiré que pasen por mi territorio. Si tratan de entrar, yo les haré frente con mi ejército».

And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

Los enviados israelitas respondieron: «Le prometemos que no nos saldremos del camino principal y ni siquiera tomaremos nada del agua que se encuentre en su territorio, y cualquier cosa que necesitemos la pagaremos. Solamente deseamos pasar a través de su país, y nada más».
Y los hijos de Israel dijeron: Por el camino seguido iremos; y si bebiéremos tus aguas yo y mis ganados, daré el precio de ellas: ciertamente sin hacer otra cosa, pasaré de seguida.
And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.

Pero el rey de Edom fue cortante: «Ya se los advertí, ¡no pasen por mi territorio!». Dicho eso, se dirigió hacia la frontera con un ejército muy fuerte y bien armado.
Y él respondió: No pasarás. Y salió Edom contra él con mucho pueblo, y mano fuerte.
And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

Debido a que Edom le negó el paso a través de su territorio, Israel tuvo que regresar y viajar desde Cades hasta el monte de Hor.
No quiso, pues, Edom dejar pasar á Israel por su término, y apartóse Israel de él.

Y partidos de Cades los hijos de Israel, toda aquella congregación, vinieron al monte de Hor.

Entonces el Señor les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón en la frontera de Edom:
Y Jehová habló á Moisés y Aarón en el monte de Hor, en los confines de la tierra de Edom, diciendo:
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,

―Ha llegado el momento en que Aarón debe morir. Él no entrará en la tierra que yo le he dado al pueblo de Israel, porque ustedes dos se rebelaron contra mis instrucciones en las aguas de Meribá.
Aarón será reunido á sus pueblos; pues no entrará en la tierra que yo di á los hijos de Israel, por cuanto fuisteis rebeldes á mi mandamiento en las aguas de la rencilla.
Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

Ahora toma a Aarón y a su hijo Eleazar y llévalos al monte Hor.
