1Da erhob die ganze Gemeinde ein lautes Geschrei, und das Volk weinte in jener Nacht;
2alle Israeliten murrten über Mose und Aaron, und die ganze Gemeinde klagte vor ihnen: »Ach wären wir doch im Lande Ägypten gestorben! Oder wären wir doch hier in der Wüste gestorben!
3Warum führt uns der HERR in dieses Land? Damit wir durch das Schwert fallen? Damit unsere Frauen und kleinen Kinder (den Feinden) zur Beute werden? Ist es nicht das Beste für uns, wir kehren nach Ägypten zurück?«
4Und sie sagten einer zum andern: »Wir wollen uns einen Anführer wählen und nach Ägypten zurückkehren!«
5Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron vor der ganzen versammelten Gemeinde der Israeliten auf ihr Angesicht nieder.
6Josua aber, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jephunnes, die zu denen gehörten, welche das Land ausgekundschaftet hatten, zerrissen ihre Kleider
7und gaben vor der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten folgende Erklärung ab: »Das Land, das wir als Kundschafter durchzogen haben, ist ein außerordentlich schönes Land!
8Wenn der HERR uns wohlwill, so wird er uns schon in dieses Land bringen und es uns geben, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt.
9Nur empört euch nicht gegen den HERRN und fürchtet euch ja nicht vor den Bewohnern des Landes! Denn wie einen Bissen Brot werden wir sie verspeisen. Der Schutz ihrer Götter ist von ihnen gewichen, aber mit uns ist der HERR: fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen!«
10Als nun die ganze Gemeinde schon daran dachte, sie zu steinigen, erschien die Herrlichkeit des HERRN allen Israeliten am Offenbarungszelt;
11und der HERR sagte zu Mose: »Wie lange will dieses Volk mich noch verhöhnen und wie lange noch mir kein Vertrauen schenken trotz aller Wunderzeichen, die ich unter ihnen getan habe?
12Ich will sie mit der Pest schlagen und sie ausrotten; dich aber will ich zu einem Volk machen, das größer und stärker ist als sie!«
13Da erwiderte Mose dem HERRN: »Die Ägypter haben es vernommen, daß du dieses Volk mit deiner Kraft aus ihrer Mitte hergeführt hast,
14und man wird es auch den Bewohnern dieses Landes sagen, welche gehört haben, daß du, HERR, inmitten dieses Volkes weilst, daß du dich ihm Auge in Auge offenbarst und daß deine Wolke über ihnen steht und du in einer Wolkensäule bei Tage und in einer Feuersäule bei Nacht vor ihnen herziehst.
15Wenn du nun dieses Volk wie einen Mann tötest, so werden die Völkerschaften, welche die Kunde von dir vernommen haben, laut aussprechen:
16›Weil der HERR nicht imstande war, dieses Volk in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen zugeschworen hatte, darum hat er sie in der Wüste abgeschlachtet!‹
17So möge sich denn jetzt deine Kraft, o HERR, groß erweisen, wie du es verheißen hast, als du sagtest:
18›Der HERR ist langmütig und reich an Gnade; er vergibt Unrecht und Übertretung, läßt aber auch den Schuldigen keineswegs ungestraft, sondern sucht die Schuld der Väter an den Kindern heim bis ins dritte und vierte Glied.‹
19So vergib doch diesem Volk seine Schuld nach deiner großen Gnade und so, wie du diesem Volke von Ägypten an bis hierher verziehen hast!«
20Da antwortete der HERR: »Ich habe ihm vergeben, wie du es erbeten hast.
21Aber wahrlich, so wahr ich lebe und so wahr die ganze Erde von der Herrlichkeit des HERRN erfüllt werden soll:
22alle die Männer, die meine Herrlichkeit und meine Wunderzeichen, die ich in Ägypten und in der Wüste getan habe, gesehen und mich trotzdem nun schon zehnmal versucht und nicht auf meine Weisungen gehört haben –
23sie sollen das Land, das ich ihren Vätern zugeschworen habe, nicht zu sehen bekommen! Nein, keiner von allen, die mich verhöhnt haben, soll es zu sehen bekommen!
24Nur meinen Knecht Kaleb, der einen anderen Geist gezeigt und mir vollen Gehorsam bewiesen hat, den will ich in das Land bringen, das er schon einmal betreten hat, und seine Nachkommen sollen es besitzen;
25die Amalekiter aber und die Kanaanäer bleiben in der Niederung wohnen! Morgen kehrt um und brecht nach der Wüste auf in der Richtung nach dem Schilfmeer zu!«
26Hierauf sagte der HERR zu Mose und Aaron:
27»Wie lange soll es noch dauern, daß diese nichtswürdige Gemeinde gegen mich murrt? Ich habe das Murren wohl gehört, das die Israeliten gegen mich erheben.
28Sage ihnen: ›So wahr ich lebe!‹ – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN –: ›Ich will es euch genau so ergehen lassen, wie ihr es laut vor meinen Ohren ausgesprochen habt!
29In der Wüste hier sollen eure Leiber tot hinfallen, und zwar ihr alle, die gemustert worden sind, ihr alle vollzählig von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, die ihr gegen mich gemurrt habt.
30Ihr sollt nimmermehr in das Land kommen, das ich euch durch einen Eid zum Wohnsitz zugesagt habe, keiner außer Kaleb, dem Sohne Jephunnes, und Josua, dem Sohne Nuns.
31Eure kleinen Kinder aber, von denen ihr gesagt habt, sie würden (den Feinden) zur Beute werden, die will ich hineinbringen, und sie sollen das Land kennen lernen, das ihr verschmäht habt;
32eure eigenen Leiber aber sollen in der Wüste hier tot hinfallen,
33und eure Söhne sollen vierzig Jahre lang als Hirten in der Wüste umherziehen und für euren treulosen Abfall von mir büßen, bis eure Leiber in der Wüste aufgerieben sind.
34Nach der Zahl der vierzig Tage, in denen ihr das Land ausgekundschaftet habt – immer ein Tag für ein Jahr gerechnet –, sollt ihr vierzig Jahre lang für eure Verschuldungen büßen und sollt erfahren, was es auf sich hat, wenn ich mich von euch abwende!
35Ich, der HERR, habe es ausgesprochen! Wahrlich, so will ich mit dieser ganzen nichtswürdigen Gemeinde verfahren, die sich gegen mich zusammengerottet hat: in der Wüste hier sollen sie aufgerieben werden, und hier sollen sie sterben!‹«
36Die Männer aber, die Mose zur Auskundschaftung des Landes ausgesandt hatte und die nach ihrer Rückkehr die ganze Gemeinde zum Murren gegen ihn durch ihren ungünstigen Bericht über das Land verleitet hatten –
37diese Männer, die über das Land ungünstig berichtet hatten, starben eines plötzlichen Todes vor dem HERRN.
38Nur Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jephunnes, blieben am Leben von jenen Männern, die zur Auskundschaftung des Landes ausgezogen waren.
39Als nun Mose diese Drohworte des HERRN allen Israeliten mitgeteilt hatte, da geriet das Volk in tiefe Betrübnis.
40Sie machten sich also am andern Morgen in der Frühe fertig, auf die Höhe des Gebirges hinaufzuziehen, und sagten: »Wir sind jetzt bereit, in die Gegend hinaufzuziehen, von welcher der HERR geredet hat; denn wir haben gesündigt.«
41Aber Mose antwortete: »Warum wollt ihr doch den Befehl des HERRN übertreten? Das wird euch nicht gelingen!
42Zieht ja nicht hinauf, denn der HERR ist nicht in eurer Mitte; ihr werdet sonst von euren Feinden geschlagen werden;
43denn die Amalekiter und Kanaanäer stehen euch dort gegenüber, und ihr werdet durch das Schwert fallen: durch euren Abfall vom HERRN habt ihr nun einmal verschuldet, daß der HERR nicht mit euch sein wird!«
44Trotzdem blieben sie in ihrer Vermessenheit dabei, auf die Höhe des Gebirges hinaufzuziehen; doch die Lade mit dem Bundesgesetz des HERRN und Mose verließen das Innere des Lagers nicht.
45Da kamen die Amalekiter und Kanaanäer, die in jenem Gebirge wohnten, herab, schlugen sie und zersprengten sie bis Horma.

1ENTONCES toda la congregación alzaron grita, y dieron voces: y el pueblo lloró aquella noche.
2Y quejáronse contra Moisés y contra Aarón todos los hijos de Israel; y díjoles toda la multitud: ¡Ojalá muriéramos en la tierra de Egipto; ó en este desierto ojalá muriéramos!
3¿Y por qué nos trae Jehová á esta tierra para caer á cuchillo, y que nuestras mujeres y nuestros chiquitos sean por presa? ¿no nos sería mejor volvernos á Egipto?
4Y decían el uno al otro: Hagamos un capitán, y volvámonos á Egipto.
5Entonces Moisés y Aarón cayeron sobre sus rostros delante de toda la multitud de la congregación de los hijos de Israel.
6Y Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jephone, que eran de los que habían reconocido la tierra, rompieron sus vestidos;
7Y hablaron á toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, diciendo: La tierra por donde pasamos para reconocerla, es tierra en gran manera buena.
8Si Jehová se agradare de nosotros, él nos meterá en esta tierra, y nos la entregará; tierra que fluye leche y miel.
9Por tanto, no seáis rebeldes contra Jehová, ni temáis al pueblo de aquesta tierra, porque nuestro pan son: su amparo se ha apartado de ellos, y con nosotros está Jehová: no los temáis.
10Entonces toda la multitud habló de apedrearlos con piedras. Mas la gloria de Jehová se mostró en el tabernáculo del testimonio á todos los hijos de Israel.
11Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: ¿Hasta cuándo me ha de irritar este pueblo? ¿hasta cuándo no me ha de creer con todas las señales que he hecho en medio de ellos?
12Yo le heriré de mortandad, y lo destruiré, y á ti te pondré sobre gente grande y más fuerte que ellos.
13Y Moisés respondió á Jehová: Oiránlo luego los Egipcios, porque de en medio de ellos sacaste á este pueblo con tu fortaleza:
14Y lo dirán á los habitadores de esta tierra; los cuales han oído que tú, oh Jehová, estabas en medio de este pueblo, que ojo á ojo aparecías tú, oh Jehová, y que tu nube estaba sobre ellos, y que de día ibas delante de ellos en columna de nube, y de noche en columna de fuego:
15Y que has hecho morir á este pueblo como á un hombre: y las gentes que hubieren oído tu fama hablarán, diciendo:
16Porque no pudo Jehová meter este pueblo en la tierra de la cual les había jurado, los mató en el desierto.
17Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que sea magnificada la fortaleza del Señor, como lo hablaste, diciendo:
18Jehová, tardo de ira y grande en misericordia, que perdona la iniquidad y la rebelión, y absolviendo no absolverá al culpado; que visita la maldad de los padres sobre los hijos hasta los terceros y hasta los cuartos.
19Perdona ahora la iniquidad de este pueblo según la grandeza de tu misericordia, y como has perdonado á este pueblo desde Egipto hasta aquí.
20Entonces Jehová dijo: yo lo he perdonado conforme á tu dicho:
21Mas, ciertamente vivo yo y mi gloria hinche toda la tierra,
22Que todos los que vieron mi gloria y mis señales que he hecho en Egipto y en el desierto, y me han tentado ya diez veces, y no han oído mi voz,
23No verán la tierra de la cual juré á sus padres: no, ninguno de los que me han irritado la verá.
24Empero mi siervo Caleb, por cuanto hubo en él otro espíritu, y cumplió de ir en pos de mí, yo le meteré en la tierra donde entró, y su simiente la recibirá en heredad.
25Ahora bien, el Amalecita y el Cananeo habitan en el valle; volveos mañana, y partíos al desierto, camino del mar Bermejo.
26Y Jehová habló á Moisés y á Aarón, diciendo:
27¿Hasta cuándo oiré esta depravada multitud que murmura contra mí, las querellas de los hijos de Israel, que de mí se quejan?
28Diles: Vivo yo, dice Jehová, que según habéis hablado á mis oídos, así haré yo con vosotros:
29En este desierto caerán vuestros cuerpos; todos vuestros contados según toda vuestra cuenta, de veinte años arriba, los cuales habéis murmurado contra mí;
30Vosotros á la verdad no entraréis en la tierra, por la cual alcé mi mano de haceros habitar en ella; exceptuando á Caleb hijo de Jephone, y á Josué hijo de Nun.
31Mas vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis que serían por presa, yo los introduciré, y ellos conocerán la tierra que vosotros despreciasteis.
32Y en cuanto á vosotros, vuestros cuerpos caerán en este desierto.
33Y vuestros hijos andarán pastoreando en el desierto cuarenta años, y ellos llevarán vuestras fornicaciones, hasta que vuestros cuerpos sean consumidos en el desierto.
34Conforme al número de los días, de los cuarenta días en que reconocisteis la tierra, llevaréis vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años, un año por cada día; y conoceréis mi castigo.
35Yo Jehová he hablado; así haré á toda esta multitud perversa que se ha juntado contra mí; en este desierto serán consumidos, y ahí morirán.
36Y los varones que Moisés envió á reconocer la tierra, y vueltos habían hecho murmurar contra él á toda la congregación, desacreditando aquel país,
37Aquellos varones que habían hablado mal de la tierra, murieron de plaga delante de Jehová.
38Mas Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jephone, quedaron con vida de entre aquellos hombres que habían ido á reconocer la tierra.
39Y Moisés dijo estas cosas á todos los hijos de Israel, y el pueblo se enlutó mucho.
40Y levantáronse por la mañana, y subieron á la cumbre del monte, diciendo: Henos aquí para subir al lugar del cual ha hablado Jehová; porque hemos pecado.
41Y dijo Moisés: ¿Por qué quebrantáis el dicho de Jehová? Esto tampoco os sucederá bien.
42No subáis, porque Jehová no está en medio de vosotros, no seáis heridos delante de vuestros enemigos.
43Porque el Amalecita y el Cananeo están allí delante de vosotros, y caeréis á cuchillo: pues por cuanto os habéis retraído de seguir á Jehová, por eso no será Jehová con vosotros.
44Sin embargo, se obstinaron en subir á la cima del monte: mas el arca de la alianza de Jehová, y Moisés, no se apartaron de en medio del campo.
45Y descendieron el Amalecita y el Cananeo, que habitaban en aquel monte, é hiriéronlos y derrotáronlos, persiguiéndolos hasta Horma.

1And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
42Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
World English Bible
1All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
3Why does the LORD bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”
4They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.
7They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
8If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.
9Only don’t rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Don’t fear them.”
10But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. The LORD’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
11The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?
12I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
13Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.
14They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are among this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,
16‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
17Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
18‘The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’
19Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
20The LORD said, “I have pardoned according to your word;
21but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the LORD’s glory—
22because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
23surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
25Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
26The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
28Tell them, ‘As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.
29Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,
30surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’
35I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
36The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,
37even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
38But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
39Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
40They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which the LORD has promised; for we have sinned.”
41Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of the LORD, since it shall not prosper?
42Don’t go up, for the LORD isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
43For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you.”
