1L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
2Envoie des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d’Israël. Tu enverras un homme de chacune des tribus de leurs pères; tous seront des principaux d’entre eux.
3Moïse les envoya du désert de Paran, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel; tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d’Israël.
4Voici leurs noms. Pour la tribu de Ruben: Schammua, fils de Zaccur;
5pour la tribu de Siméon: Schaphath, fils de Hori;
6pour la tribu de Juda: Caleb, fils de Jephunné;
7pour la tribu d’Issacar: Jigual, fils de Joseph;
8pour la tribu d’Éphraïm: Hosée, fils de Nun;
9pour la tribu de Benjamin: Palthi, fils de Raphu;
10pour la tribu de Zabulon: Gaddiel, fils de Sodi;
11pour la tribu de Joseph, la tribu de Manassé: Gaddi, fils de Susi;
12pour la tribu de Dan: Ammiel, fils de Guemalli;
13pour la tribu d’Aser: Sethur, fils de Micaël;
14pour la tribu de Nephthali: Nachbi, fils de Vophsi;
15pour la tribu de Gad: Guéuel, fils de Maki.
16Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour explorer le pays. Moïse donna à Hosée, fils de Nun, le nom de Josué.
17Moïse les envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit: Montez ici, par le midi; et vous monterez sur la montagne.
18Vous verrez le pays, ce qu’il est, et le peuple qui l’habite, s’il est fort ou faible, s’il est en petit ou en grand nombre;
19ce qu’est le pays où il habite, s’il est bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, si elles sont ouvertes ou fortifiées;
20ce qu’est le terrain, s’il est gras ou maigre, s’il y a des arbres ou s’il n’y en a point. Ayez bon courage, et prenez des fruits du pays. C’était le temps des premiers raisins.
21Ils montèrent, et ils explorèrent le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu’à Rehob, sur le chemin de Hamath.
22Ils montèrent, par le midi, et ils allèrent jusqu’à Hébron, où étaient Ahiman, Schéschaï et Talmaï, enfants d’Anak. Hébron avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tsoan en Égypte.
23Ils arrivèrent jusqu’à la vallée d’Eschcol, où ils coupèrent une branche de vigne avec une grappe de raisin, qu’ils portèrent à deux au moyen d’une perche; ils prirent aussi des grenades et des figues.
24On donna à ce lieu le nom de vallée d’Eschcol, à cause de la grappe que les enfants d’Israël y coupèrent.
25Ils furent de retour de l’exploration du pays au bout de quarante jours.
26A leur arrivée, ils se rendirent auprès de Moïse et d’Aaron, et de toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, à Kadès dans le désert de Paran. Ils leur firent un rapport, ainsi qu’à toute l’assemblée, et ils leur montrèrent les fruits du pays.
27Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent à Moïse: Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. A la vérité, c’est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, et en voici les fruits.
28Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est puissant, les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avons vu des enfants d’Anak.
29Les Amalécites habitent la contrée du midi; les Héthiens, les Jébusiens et les Amoréens habitent la montagne; et les Cananéens habitent près de la mer et le long du Jourdain.
30Caleb fit taire le peuple, qui murmurait contre Moïse. Il dit: Montons, emparons-nous du pays, nous y serons vainqueurs!
31Mais les hommes qui y étaient allés avec lui dirent: Nous ne pouvons pas monter contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous.
32Et ils décrièrent devant les enfants d’Israël le pays qu’ils avaient exploré. Ils dirent: Le pays que nous avons parcouru, pour l’explorer, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants; tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont des hommes d’une haute taille;
33et nous y avons vu les géants, enfants d’Anak, de la race des géants: nous étions à nos yeux et aux leurs comme des sauterelles.

2Y Jehová habló á Moisés, diciendo:
3Envía tú hombres que reconozcan la tierra de Canaán, la cual yo doy á los hijos de Israel: de cada tribu de sus padres enviaréis un varón, cada uno príncipe entre ellos.
4Y Moisés los envió desde el desierto de Parán, conforme á la palabra de Jehová: y todos aquellos varones eran príncipes de los hijos de Israel.
5Los nombres de los cuales son éstos: De la tribu de Rubén, Sammua hijo de Zaccur.
6De la tribu de Simeón, Saphat hijo de Hurí.
7De la tribu de Judá, Caleb hijo de Jephone.

17Estos son los nombres de los varones que Moisés envió á reconocer la tierra: y á Oseas hijo de Nun, le puso Moisés el nombre de Josué.
18Enviólos, pues, Moisés á reconocer la tierra de Canaán, diciéndoles: Subid por aquí, por el mediodía, y subid al monte:
19Y observad la tierra qué tal es; y el pueblo que la habita, si es fuerte ó débil, si poco ó numeroso;
20Qué tal la tierra habitada, si es buena ó mala; y qué tales son las ciudades habitadas, si de tiendas ó de fortalezas;
21Y cuál sea el terreno, si es pingüe ó flaco, si en él hay ó no árboles: y esforzaos, y coged del fruto del país. Y el tiempo era el tiempo de las primeras uvas.
22Y ellos subieron, y reconocieron la tierra desde el desierto de Zin hasta Rehob, entrando en Emath.
23Y subieron por el mediodía, y vinieron hasta Hebrón: y allí estaban Aimán, y Sesai, y Talmai, hijos de Anac. Hebrón fué edificada siete años antes de Zoán, la de Egipto.
24Y llegaron hasta el arroyo de Escol, y de allí cortaron un sarmiento con un racimo de uvas, el cual trajeron dos en un palo, y de las granadas y de los higos.
25Y llamóse aquel lugar Nahal-escol, por el racimo que cortaron de allí los hijos de Israel.
26Y volvieron de reconocer la tierra al cabo de cuarenta días.
27Y anduvieron y vinieron á Moisés y á Aarón, y á toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, en el desierto de Parán, en Cades, y diéronles la respuesta, y á toda la congregación, y les mostraron el fruto de la tierra.
28Y le contaron, y dijeron: Nosotros llegamos á la tierra á la cual nos enviaste, la que ciertamente fluye leche y miel; y este es el fruto de ella.
29Mas el pueblo que habita aquella tierra es fuerte, y las ciudades muy grandes y fuertes; y también vimos allí los hijos de Anac.
30Amalec habita la tierra del mediodía; y el Hetheo, y el Jebuseo, y el Amorrheo, habitan en el monte; y el Cananeo habita junto á la mar, y á la ribera del Jordán.
31Entonces Caleb hizo callar el pueblo delante de Moisés, y dijo: Subamos luego, y poseámosla; que más podremos que ella.
32Mas los varones que subieron con él, dijeron: No podremos subir contra aquel pueblo; porque es más fuerte que nosotros.
33Y vituperaron entre los hijos de Israel la tierra que habían reconocido, diciendo: La tierra por donde pasamos para reconocerla, es tierra que traga á sus moradores; y todo el pueblo que vimos en medio de ella, son hombres de grande estatura. También vimos allí gigantes, hijos de Anac, raza de los gigantes: y éramos nosotros, á nuestro parecer, como langostas; y así les parecíamos á ellos.

1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
3And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.
9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
18And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
19And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
20And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
21So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
