1Als nun Sanballat und Gesem, dem Araber, und unseren übrigen Feinden zu Ohren kam, daß ich die Mauer gebaut hatte, so daß kein Riß darin übrig geblieben war - wenn ich auch bis zu dieser Zeit die Thüren noch nicht in die Thore eingesetzt hatte -,
2da sandten Sanballat und Gesem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm, daß wir in einem der Dörfer in der Ebene von Ono eine Zusammenkunft halten! Dabei beabsichtigten sie aber, mir Böses anzuthun.
3Da sandte ich Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich bin mit einem großen Werke beschäftigt, so daß ich nicht hinabkommen kann. Das Werk kann unmöglich liegen bleiben, indem ich es im Stiche lassen sollte, um zu euch hinabzukommen!
4Und sie sandten auf diese Weise viermal zu mir; aber ich antwortete ihnen in der angegebenen Weise.
5Da sandte Sanballat noch ein fünftes Mal zu mir, und zwar seinen Diener mit einem offenen Brief in der Hand.
6Darin stand: Unter den Völkern verlautet, und Gasmu sagt aus, du und die Juden, ihr beabsichtigtet, euch zu empören; deshalb seist du dabei, die Mauer zu bauen, und wollest König werden, wie aus alledem hervorgehe.
7Auch habest du Propheten angestellt, daß sie zu deinen Gunsten in Jerusalem ausrufen sollen: “Er sei König in Juda!” Und nun werden derartige Gerüchte dem Könige zu Ohren kommen. Darum komm, daß wir eine Zusammenkunft halten!
8Da sandte ich zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Es ist nichts derartiges geschehen, wovon du sprichst; vielmehr ersinnst du das nur von dir aus!
9Denn sie alle wollten uns in Furcht jagen, indem sie dachten: Ihre Hände werden erschlaffen und von dem Bau ablassen, so daß er nicht zu stande kommt. So stärke nun - betete ich - meine Hände!
10Und ich kam in das Haus Semajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels, während er in seinem Hause abgesperrt war. Der sprach: Wir wollen zusammen in den Tempel Gottes, in den Hauptraum hinein, gehen und dann die Thüren des Hauptraums verschließen; denn es werden welche kommen, dich zu töten, und zwar werden sie des Nachts kommen, dich zu töten!
11Ich aber sprach: Sollte ein Mann wie ich fliehen? Und wie könnte unsereiner den Hauptraum des Tempels betreten und am Leben bleiben? Ich werde nicht hineingehen!
12Und ich merkte wohl: nicht Gott hatte ihn gesandt, sondern er hatte die Weissagung über mich geredet, weil Tobia und Sanballat ihn gedungen hatten.
13Zu dem Zwecke war er gedungen, daß ich mich fürchten und also thun und mich versündigen sollte; und das hätte ihnen dann als Anlaß zu übler Nachrede gedient, damit sie mich verlästern könnten. -
14Gedenke, mein Gott, Tobia und Sanballat diese ihre Thaten, auch der Prophetin Noadja und den übrigen Propheten, die mich in Furcht jagen wollten!
15Und die Mauer wurde fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten des Elul, nach zweiundfünfzig Tagen.
16Als nun alle unsere Feinde dies vernahmen, gerieten alle Völker rings um uns her in Furcht und kamen sich nun sehr viel kleiner vor, und sie erkannten, daß infolge des Beistands von seiten unseres Gottes dieses Werk zu stande gekommen war.
17Auch ließen in jenen Tagen die Edlen Judas viele Briefe von sich an Tobia abgehen und erhielten solche von Tobia.
18Denn in Juda gab es viele, die eidlich mit ihm verbündet waren; denn er war der Schwiegersohn Sachanjas, des Sohnes Arahs, und sein Sohn Johanan hatte die Tochter Mesullams, des Sohnes Berechjas, geheiratet.
19Auch pflegten sie vor mir von seinen guten Absichten zu reden und wiederum ihm meine Worte zuzutragen; auch Briefe hatte Tobia gesandt, um mich in Furcht zu jagen.

1Y FUÉ que habiendo oído Sanballat, y Tobías, y Gesem el Arabe, y los demás nuestros enemigos, que había yo edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo, (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto en las puertas las hojas,)
2Sanballat y Gesem enviaron á decirme: Ven, y compongámonos juntos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono. Mas ellos habían pensado hacerme mal.
3Y enviéles mensajeros, diciendo: Yo hago una grande obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir á vosotros.
4Y enviaron á mí con el mismo asunto por cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.
5Envió entonces Sanballat á mí su criado, á decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano,
6En la cual estaba escrito: Hase oído entre las gentes, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los Judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey;
7Y que has puesto profetas que prediquen de ti en Jerusalem, diciendo: ¡Rey en Judá! Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras: ven por tanto, y consultemos juntos.
8Entonces envié yo á decirle: No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas.
9Porque todos ellos nos ponían miedo, diciendo: Debilitaránse las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será hecha. Esfuerza pues mis manos, oh Dios.
10Vine luego en secreto á casa de Semaías hijo de Delaías, hijo de Mehetabeel, porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo: Juntémonos en la casa de Dios dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán á matarte.
11Entonces dije: ¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿y quién, que como yo fuera, entraría al templo para salvar la vida? No entraré.
12Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí, porque Tobías y Sanballat le habían alquilado por salario.
13Porque sobornado fué para hacerme temer así, y que pecase, y les sirviera de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado.
14Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanballat, conforme á estas sus obras, y también de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que hacían por ponerme miedo.
15Acabóse pues el muro el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.
16Y como lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las gentes que estaban en nuestros alrededores, y abatiéronse mucho sus ojos, y conocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.
17Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los principales de Judá á Tobías, y las de Tobías venían á ellos.
18Porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él, porque era yerno de Sechânías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado la hija de Mesullam, hijo de Berechîas.
19También contaban delante de mí sus buenas obras, y referíanle mis palabras. Y enviaba Tobías cartas para atemorizarme.

1Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
World English Bible
1Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),
2Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
3I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?”
4They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
7You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let’s take counsel together.”
8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
9For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.
10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”
11I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him, but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13He was hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear.”
15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
16When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.
