1Als es nun dem Sanballat, dem Tobija und dem Araber Gesem sowie unseren übrigen Feinden bekannt wurde, daß ich die Mauer wieder aufgebaut hätte und daß keine Lücke mehr in ihr geblieben wäre – nur hatte ich bis dahin noch keine Türflügel in die Tore eingesetzt –,
2da sandten Sanballat und Gesem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: »Komm, laß uns in Ha-Kaphirim in der Ebene Ono eine Zusammenkunft halten!« Sie hatten nämlich Böses gegen mich im Sinn.
3Da schickte ich Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen antworten: »Ich bin mit einem bedeutenden Werke beschäftigt und kann deshalb nicht hinabkommen: das Werk würde sofort stille stehen, wenn ich es unterbräche und zu euch hinunterkäme.«
4Nun sandten sie auf dieselbe Weise viermal Botschaft zu mir, ich gab ihnen aber immer dieselbe Antwort.
5Da sandte Sanballat auf dieselbe Weise noch zum fünftenmale seinen Burschen zu mir mit einem offenen Briefe in der Hand,
6in welchem geschrieben stand: »Unter den Leuten geht das Gerücht um, und Gasmu sagt es auch, daß ihr, du und die Juden, an Empörung denkt; darum bauest du die Mauer wieder auf, und du selbst wollest dich zum König über sie machen und dergleichen mehr;
7sogar Propheten habest du auftreten lassen, die dich in Jerusalem zum König von Juda ausrufen sollen. Nun werden solche Gerüchte aber dem Könige zu Ohren dringen; darum komm, laß uns zusammen ratschlagen!«
8Darauf sandte ich folgenden Bescheid an ihn: »Nichts von allem, was du behauptest, ist wirklich geschehen, sondern du hast das selbst frei erfunden!«
9Sie alle wollten uns nämlich nur bange machen, weil sie dachten: »Sie werden von der Arbeit schon ablassen, so daß das Werk nicht vollendet wird.« – Nun aber stärke meine Hände!
10Als ich (einmal) in die Wohnung Semajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels, kam, der gerade durch Unreinheit verhindert war, sagte er: »Laß uns zusammen ins Haus Gottes gehen, in das Innerste des Tempels, und die Türen des Tempels verschließen! Denn es werden Leute kommen, um dich zu ermorden, und zwar werden sie bei Nacht kommen, um dich zu ermorden.«
11Doch ich entgegnete: »Ein Mann wie ich sollte fliehen? Und wie könnte jemand, wie ich bin, in den Tempel gehen und am Leben bleiben? Nein, ich gehe nicht hinein!«
12Ich hatte nämlich gemerkt, daß nicht Gott ihn gesandt hatte, sondern er hatte den Gottesspruch deshalb an mich gerichtet, weil Tobija und Sanballat ihn bestochen hatten;
13und zwar war er zu dem Zweck bestochen worden, daß ich in Angst geraten und so handeln und mich dadurch versündigen sollte; das hätte ihnen dann zu übler Nachrede dienen können, um mich in Verruf zu bringen.
14Gedenke, mein Gott, dem Tobija und Sanballat diese ihre Handlungsweise und auch der Prophetin Noadja und den übrigen Propheten, die mich ängstlich zu machen suchten!
15Die Mauer aber wurde am fünfundzwanzigsten Tage des Monats Elul nach Verlauf von zweiundfünfzig Tagen fertig.
16Als nun alle unsere Feinde das erfuhren, erschraken alle heidnischen Völkerschaften rings um uns her, und es entfiel ihnen aller Mut; denn sie erkannten, daß dieses Werk unter der Mitwirkung unseres Gottes vollführt worden war. –
17Auch ließen in jenen Tagen die vornehmen Juden zahlreiche Briefe an Tobija abgehen, wie solche auch von Tobija an sie ankamen.
18Es gab nämlich unter den Juden gar manche, die ihm eidlich zum Beistand verpflichtet waren; denn er war der Schwiegersohn Sechanjas, des Sohnes Arahs, und sein Sohn Johanan hatte die Tochter Mesullams, des Sohnes Berechjas, geheiratet.
19Sie redeten sogar in meiner Gegenwart von seinen guten Eigenschaften und hinterbrachten ihm meine Äußerungen; auch sandte Tobija Briefe, um mich einzuschüchtern.

1Y FUÉ que habiendo oído Sanballat, y Tobías, y Gesem el Arabe, y los demás nuestros enemigos, que había yo edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo, (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto en las puertas las hojas,)
2Sanballat y Gesem enviaron á decirme: Ven, y compongámonos juntos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono. Mas ellos habían pensado hacerme mal.
3Y enviéles mensajeros, diciendo: Yo hago una grande obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir á vosotros.
4Y enviaron á mí con el mismo asunto por cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.
5Envió entonces Sanballat á mí su criado, á decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano,
6En la cual estaba escrito: Hase oído entre las gentes, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los Judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey;
7Y que has puesto profetas que prediquen de ti en Jerusalem, diciendo: ¡Rey en Judá! Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras: ven por tanto, y consultemos juntos.
8Entonces envié yo á decirle: No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas.
9Porque todos ellos nos ponían miedo, diciendo: Debilitaránse las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será hecha. Esfuerza pues mis manos, oh Dios.
10Vine luego en secreto á casa de Semaías hijo de Delaías, hijo de Mehetabeel, porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo: Juntémonos en la casa de Dios dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán á matarte.
11Entonces dije: ¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿y quién, que como yo fuera, entraría al templo para salvar la vida? No entraré.
12Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí, porque Tobías y Sanballat le habían alquilado por salario.
13Porque sobornado fué para hacerme temer así, y que pecase, y les sirviera de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado.
14Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanballat, conforme á estas sus obras, y también de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que hacían por ponerme miedo.
15Acabóse pues el muro el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.
16Y como lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las gentes que estaban en nuestros alrededores, y abatiéronse mucho sus ojos, y conocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.
17Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los principales de Judá á Tobías, y las de Tobías venían á ellos.
18Porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él, porque era yerno de Sechânías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado la hija de Mesullam, hijo de Berechîas.
19También contaban delante de mí sus buenas obras, y referíanle mis palabras. Y enviaba Tobías cartas para atemorizarme.

1Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
World English Bible
1Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),
2Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
3I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?”
4They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
7You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let’s take counsel together.”
8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
9For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.
10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”
11I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him, but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13He was hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear.”
15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
16When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

18For there were many in Judah sworn to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.
